We meet Nancy Rumplik, an outpatient nurse in an ambulatory clinic, as she prevents a nearly fatal allergic reaction to a course of chemotherapy. We meet nurse practitioner Ellen Kitchen, who provides home care to an 88-year-old man who does not want surgery for his prostate cancer. And we meet Jeannie Chaisson, a medical clinical nurse specialist, whose work continues after her shift ends as she helps a husband and daughter come to terms with a loved one's desire to stop treatment and succumb to death. Summarizes nursing's role in the current health care arena.

A must read for all those working IN or WITH the profession of nursing. Gordon discusses how the changes in our health care system have affected both the nurses role and quality patient care issues. The essential need for collaboration of all health care personnel is woven throughout the content. I required this book for a senior nursing course I just taught at Wayne State University in Detroit and the students were most impressed with the book and its approach to nursing, medicine and health care. A must read for nurses, physicians, hospital administration, potential students and the general public. Afterall, we are all potential patients and we should be aware of what is happening to the largest population of health care providers, the nurses!

Must Read for EVERYONE

I've been a nurse for several years, and I got the book on recommendation from another nurse friend of mine. I was, and continue to be, amazed at the power of this book. It highlighted in stark words and numbers, problems facing health care today, while at the same time brightening the work with the all too human touch of nurses, patients and doctors. Once you read this book, you will understand why legislation such as The Patient Safety Act came to be, and why it is needed. It describes why nursing is so necessary, why even bathing or feeding a patient are not always within the realm of tasks to be assigned to unlicensed personnel.
I urge everyone to read this book, and be touched by Gordon's powerful writing.

Physician Recommends Life Support for Peers & Patients

This is a very moving and important book, which should be required reading for all medical students and doctors. Ms. Gordon who spent three years following three extra-ordinary nurses learned (and in the book presents) more knowledge and insights about sickness, pain, caring, and the health care system than my medicial residents learn during their three year (internal medicine) residency. Each of the three nurses covers a different part of the health care map (oncology chemotherapy nurse, home health nurse, and inpatient nurse) and illustrates the critical and often invisible role nurses play in health care. What the book does so ably is to highlight these special caring roles, and then place them in the context of what is happening in the U.S. health care system today. Ms. Gordon, an advocate for universal health insurance and consumer accoutablity starkly contrasts the bright light these and thousands of other of the quiet heros in nursing, with the dark side of market driven health care that threatens these values and heroism. If for nothing else, the book is worth reading for a useful and interesting history of the practice of nursing, which is interwoven with the stories of these three nurses. Nurses are the essence of quality and this book is a high quality look at their important and endangered role. (Dr. Gordon Schiff internist who directs the Clinical Quality Research Unit at Cook County Hospital in Chicago.

Richard Kaczynski, PhD, has been a student of the western mystery tradition--and of Thelema and the works of Aleister Crowley in particular--since 1977. He has been a member of O.T.O. since 1987, and an international lecturer on magick since 1990. He is the author of the critically acclaimed biography Perdurabo: The Life of Aleister Crowley as well as the books Perdurabo Outtakes and Panic in Detroit: The Magician and the Motor City. Along with Hymenaeus Beta, he is co-editor of The Revival of Magick and Other Essays. Over the years, his writing has appeared in various magazines (High Times, Different Worlds, The Magical Link, Mezlim, Eidolon, Neshamah, Cheth) and books (Golden Dawn Sourcebook, Rebels and Devils). He currently lives in Maryland with his wife and cat.

Excellent First Book For Those Interetsed In Crowley

It is almost an axiom that if you want to sell a lot of occult books, as you might do if you were a new occult publisher, you need only publish a book about Aleister Crowley. Of all the books about Crowley I have ever read, and this book has a six-page bibliography of them; I believe this is certainly the most informative introduction to Crowley and his works. I highly recommend it along with `Magic Without Tears,' to those interested in Crowley and his magical operations. I would even say these two books should be a prerequisite to any other study of Crowley's works or magical system.

For those who are interested in joining any of the several occult organizations founded by Crowley there is an abundance of contact information, as well as a recommended reading list in the book. A safer introduction to the kind of thing Crowley was involved in may be gained by becoming a Freemason. Most of his organizations have a definite Masonic slant or cast to them. Not all magical organizations are so oriented.

For those who do not know anything about Aleister Crowley, born in 1875, he inherited a goodly sum of money, and like many inheritors, proceeded to throw it away, assuming that their funds would be replaced in some unknown way. By 1905 or so, Crowley was, for all practical purposes, broke. He then lived on what was essentially the charity of others and his ever-expanding reputation as being, `The wickedest man in the world.' This book is a paean of praise for his life and works, one of many written in that regard, but a better written and more informative book than most.

Crowley is one of these people in the occult community you either like or dislike. If you either like him or are indifferent to him, you really should read this book. If you dislike Crowley, it is unlikely this book will change your mind. There have been a few books written opposing Crowley, none of which are as worthwhile as this one. However, this book favors Crowley, and so it was not written with an even hand.

Highly recommended for both admirers and detractors of Crowley.

A Lot of Bang for a Little Book!

I found this book completely enlightening!

It taught me that Crowley rhymes with 'holy': Something which I find widely debated/unknonwn. It references a work of poetry Crowley wrote, which provided the insight on pronunciation (from Crowley himself!).

It also provides a list of Crowley's top 11 writings. Something I've been searching for, for quite some time! The list is in alphabetical order and names the most influential/important works written by Crowley. Good to know for those looking to study his beliefs.

This little book provides an overview of Crowley's life (written by the author of the most widely recommended Crowley biography I have seen), a brief overview of the Secret Societies/Groups Crowley belonged to and created, and provides some key texts/rituals for these Orders.

For how small it is, it truly packs a lot of knowledge on you!

I was looking for a "Crowley Primer" of sorts, and this book was exactly what I was looking for! -I didn't want to make a purchase of one of his biographies without knowing how interesting I would find his life or beliefs. I did not want to purchase any books regarding the Golden Dawn or Thelema (Crowley's own Magical Order) without having a bit of background on them to see if their beliefs and practices were worth looking into (and spending money on). This book provided me with the insights that I needed, and propelled me along a new found path of Esoteric study.

An excellent introduction

I wanted a primer on Crowley and Thelema. I wanted it to be written by an expert and to include carefully chosen recommendations for further reading/study. This book gave me exactly what I wanted.

In hindsight, I wish it had included more discussion of Golden Dawn influences on his development. The author is very involved in Thelema, which may affect his objectivity. But admittedly there's no one qualified to write a book such as this who's dispassionate about the topics. Those are about my only complaints.

It’s the story of an orphan who, by the mid-1950s, had spent much of his life in New York’s juvenile-detention system before graduating to maximum security. There he meets Carmine, a tough old murderer who educates him to be a better criminal. Wesley comes to see himself as Carmine’s son and ultimately as the instrument of Carmine’s vengeance. Wesley does his time and, as per Carmine’s instructions, becomes a professional hit man. A Bomb Built in Hell presages motifs Vachss employed in the Burke novels, but even crime fans unfamiliar with Burke can relish it. Wesley is utterly remorseless, and the story is told in the coldest and sparest of prose. Vachss' prose, though not as stylized as the writing that would take the mystery world by storm in Flood, is as tight and succinct as Wesley's meticulously planned murders. Every Burke fan should read this novel.

From the Author
In 1972, I was represented by the John Schaffner Agency, largely on the strength of some short stories I published in minor magazines.* My first full-length effort was, essentially, the journal I kept during my time in the infamous NYC Welfare Department between 1966 and 1969, ending when I left to enter the warzone inside a country calling itself Biafra.** That book was (as was all my work prior to Flood) considered unacceptable by the publishing establishment, on the grounds that there was no market for "this kind of material."

Victor Chapin, my tireless agent, who never lost faith in me, thought my varied ground-zero experiences (including, by that time, not only the genocidal madness in Africa, but a stint as a federal investigator in sexually transmitted diseases, working as an organizer in Lake County, Indiana, running a center for urban migrants in Chicago, a re-entry joint for ex-cons, and a maximum-security prison for violent youth) would lend themselves perfectly to a "hardboiled" novel of the type that was so successful in the '50s. A Bomb Built in Hell followed.

And (again) was unanimously rejected by publishers. They professed to love the writing, but felt the events depicted were considered a "political horror story" and not remotely realistic. The rejection letters make interesting reading today. Included in the "lack of realism" category were such things as Chinese youth gangs and the fall of Haiti. And, of course, the very idea of someone entering a high school with the intent of destroying every living person inside was just too ... ludicrous.

Naturally, the book was also "too" hardboiled, "too" extreme, "too" spare and violent. I heard endlessly about how an anti-hero was acceptable, but Wesley was just "too" much.

Bomb was meant to be a Ph.D. thesis in criminology without the footnotes, exploring such areas as the connection between child abuse and crime, and the desperate need of unbonded, dangerous children to form "families of choice." Thus, the narrative is third person, and the tone is flat and detached.

Victor, ever-loyal, insisted that there was no dispute about my ability as a writer, but that I needed to add some intimacy to a book everyone called "dry ice." So ... Flood. Same themes, but first-person narrative, interior monologues, fleshed-out backstory, (some) characters with which the reader could identify (and even, presumably, like). Some sense of human connection. But the same themes.

Victor read the manuscript and told me I had finally done it ... we were winners. And then he died. Suddenly and unfairly.

Years later, after Flood came out, offers for Bomb magically appeared. Some from the same publishers who had rejected it the first time. I never took the offers, thinking of the original book as a "period piece." Later, at the suggestion of Knopf publisher (and my editor) Sonny Mehta, I cannibalized pieces of it-- Bomb was Wesley's story, Flood was Burke's--for Hard Candy, and Wesley remained a character in the series (despite being dead since Candy) until its 2008 conclusion, Another Life.

Rumors of the original book's existence were sparked by an excerpt published in the HBJ series A Matter of Crime in 1988, edited by Richard Layman.

The rumors were true. And how I wish some of the book's predictions had not proven to be so.

I dedicated Flood to Victor Chapin. And I dedicate this to him as well. It's been a long wait, old friend. I hope it reads as well from where you are now.

Truth Too Raw for its Time!

A novel that touches on assassins, turmoil in Haiti, sex predators, and school shooting -- as current as today's news, right? But this Vachss novel, originally written in 1973, never came out. The publishing houses all rejected it because, they said, it "lacked realism." We all know better now; these horrors are all vicious fact. The book chronicles every step of Wesley's journey, tragic or tender; the reader is helplessly drawn in by Vachss' spell.
This book is set in a particular period, but it is as fresh and vigorous as a dive into a winter pool. Vachss is the master of drawing aside the curtain that evil things hide behind.
Read it and weep!

A Must Read!!

I've been reading Mr. Vachss's work from his very first published novel, "FLOOD." I read this piece years ago as a down load and it is absolutly, riveting, mind blowing spot on. You won't be able to put it down. It had shown that he had a very clear view of what was to come. It was a look into the future. Remember Columbine? Anyone having read the Burke series will immediately recognize Wesley. Get it, read it, pass it on. You won't regret it. It's worth way more than $4.99

Vachss's early 'ground zero' masterwork.

A BOMB BUILT IN HELL chronicles the life of 'Wesley', a killer forged in the foster homes and juvenile institutions that were meant to protect children. Who's brilliance at murder made him the most feared killer in New York.

To think that this book was considered 'too implausible' when it was originally written is kind of ridiculous. In his work as an investigator and lawyer Andrew Vachss saw every kind of evil, including men just like Wesley. In his attempt to pre-emptively warn people of the consequence of their careless actions he wrote books like this and the 'Burke' series, only to be accused of writing "sick pornography".

Time has proven him right, and the eventual publication of A BOMB BUILT IN HELL means that Wesley's truth can now be spoken. And we'd do well to listen this time.

Passionate, Powerful, Poetic - Get a Copy and Validate Your Own Awakening!

I so enjoyed this book - especially the Magdalen connection and the France trip - the poetry woven throughout was intensely powerful - I love the matter of factness with which Deborah expresses her awakening process - this powerful book will be an affirmation for many who are wondering "what the heck is going on with me?" as the mainstream population begins to actively accelerate in the awakening process - Ascension time is NOW - this is a powerful message that will support you on your own journey from a woman of great depth and openness. (I wanted to do a video testimony but it was too long & Amazon wouldn't accept it!! Really - I could go on about this book for some time - it was an awesome journey through my summer and brought me full circle to my own Magdalen experiences in such an elegant and beautiful way) Thank you Deborah for your courage in sharing!

She's Not a Princess, and She KNOWS It

Note: This direct sequel to My Fair Concubine springs from the surprise twist ending of that novel so of necessity this review, every other review, and even the Book Description is going to contain spoilers for it so if that bothers you and you have NOT read My Fair Concubine yet, stop reading this and go read My Fair Concubine now! You'll thank me,...

or at least maybe you won't threaten to kill me for revealing the ending. (I have known spoiler hating readers to get a little testy on occasion.)

The surprise twist reveal of just exactly who Dao is and her willingness to take Yan Ling's place, who was supposed to be taking Pearl's place until love intervened and fouled everything up, sets this plot and Dao herself in motion, in a frustratingly slow moving caravan across the Mongolian steppe, headed for an arranged marriage with the central ruler of Khitan, a "heqin" or Peace Marriage.

Though not invented by Tang Dynasty rulers (similar diplomatic marriages were carried out by other Chinese dynasties and by European and other monarchies) the practice was used more during the Tang Dynasty than in any other era. Though a substantial body of writing about and by heqin brides exists in China, where these diplomatic brides have achieved a certain legendary status, most Americans who know anything about the practice arguably got it from Mulan II, Disney's surprisingly great (because most Disney straight to video tape or DVD sequels are absolutely terrible) sequel to Mulan.

The problem of the title involves Kwan-Li, the court official tasked with bringing Dao to Khitan, who is also not what he seems to be. A runaway horse, another alliance bride delegation offering another bride... and another alliance, and a Khitan ambush, all conspire to drive them together, but any future for them is hopeless. Politics and diplomacy are so complicated,...

but not as complicated as author Jeannie Lin's fiendish plots! I knew how Ms. Lin HAD to fix this; I just couldn't figure out how Ms. Lin was GOING to fix this,...

if that makes any sense.... I think I feel another headache starting. Nevertheless, if you enjoyed My Fair Concubine, you HAVE to read this, just to get that last dangling plot thread tied off.

A delightful romantic and sensual exotic historical romance story!

You might remember how much I enjoyed My Fair Concubine, the 3rd book in Jeannie Lin's Tang Dynasty series (though no need to worry if you haven't read the previous books, they can be read as a standalone, the 3rd book was the 1st I read from the series as well), so when I heard that Jeannie Lin decided to write a short sequel novella, featuring one of the most adorable and entertaining secondary characters of My Fair Concubine I couldn't wait to read An Illicit Temptation.

An Illicit Temptation is Dao's story, who was a house servant and maid and confidente of the heroine in My Fair Concubine (and as we learned the half-sister of the master of the house). But due to events of My Fair Concubine Dao is now on her way to faraway Khitan to act as princess embassador of China by concluding a diplomatic alliance marriage.

Dao is as we have come to know her in the previous book vibrant, impertinent and outspoken. But Jeannie Lin puts it in a much beautiful way:

"She was as restless and vibrant as a summer wind across the grassland."

She took on the sacrifice of leaving her homeland to marry into the faraway and unknown barbaric Khitan and while she approached this as an adventure and the chance to improve her lot in life she soon discovers that

"She had been so naive. Being a princess meant more than wearing silk and having servants attend to her every need. It meant being caught in politics and power struggles. Things she knew nothing about."

What I found wonderful was that Jeannie Lin managed to give depth and substance to the characters even in such a short novella. There were more to them than what we saw at first glance: Dao besides being the cheeky and confident tomboy showed signs of loneliness and her vulnerability in those moments was heart-squeezing. As for the hero I fell in love with him, with his sense of honour and integrity, and the way he was battling his emotions for his duty. I was amazed how Kwan-Li, the enigmatic and charismatic escort/guard had such an emotional and tender side. Both of them had hidden and fascinating facets that Jeannie Lin showed us glimpses.

"For the first time, he saw a break in her resolve and the loneliness underneath. He wanted to protect her. If this fire inside him were nothing but desire, [she] wouldn't have such power over him. He was angry at himself for this weakness."

The romance between Dao and Kwan-Li was beautiful. First it started off as curiosity and fascination but soon it evolved into something deep and meaningful both were unable to resist. Once again I applaud Jeannie Lin for giving us readers both heart-stopping romantic lines:

"You risked your life for the sake of this alliance today," she said.
"No." His gaze burned into her. "I did what I did for you."

and pulse racing sensual scenes in such a short novella:

"There was nothing but the harsh rhythm of their breathing, his weight above her, and a feeling of being anchored and held to the earth while the heavens spun around her."

Besides the wonderful romance Jenanie Lin gives the reader the sense of an exotic adventure with foreign settings, unfamiliar traditions and explanation of local politics and diplomacy making An Illicit Temptation a very satisfying and intelligent, well rounded story.

Verdict: An Illicit Temptation was a delightful HEA continuation/tie off of My Fair Concubine. I fell in love with Kwan-Li and rooted for Dao, enjoying every minute of their adventure. My only complaint is that I wouldn't have minded if their story were a bit longer. Guess I'll have to read another full length novel of Jeannie Lin to appease my craving for an exotic historical romance story. A lovely bite of a story with sensual scenes and heartsqueezing moments, if you haven't read any Jeannie Lin's story yet I urge you to pick one up, you'll become addicted. I know what I'm talking about, that's what happened to me!

An Illicit Temptationis a companion piece to My Fair Concubine an while it can be read alone it is best read as the sequel it was meant to beDao is thrust into a world she is ill prepared for, that of being the Princess by decree sent to be an Alliance Bride and help secure a peace treaty between her Kingdom and the neighboring one. Dao was raised as a servant because she was the daughter of the second wife in the household, as such the opportunity to be a Princess is one she isn't going to pass up even for Kwan-Li who makes her feel things she is afraid the old chieftain she promised to never will.

Kwan-Li has spent the last 12 years learning about court politics in the Tang Dynasty away from his home and his roots. He is given the job to escort the Princess to her future husband the Emperor of his people. He finds what sounded like a simple task of escorting a snobby Princess turns out to be an exercise in self control when he discovers An-Ming isn't at all like he expected, she is so much more.

When the caravan is attacked and Dao and Kwan-Li are forced into close quarters things smolder as they battle inner desires for each other and concern about the political situation they are in.

This is an extremely well written novella, I had not read My Fair Concubine at the time I read this and even not having that to understand some of the history involved in the story I was able to jump right in and read this. There is enough explanation given that you are still understood and were able to connect with Dao and Kwan-Li. You get a wonderful sense of what a full novel by Ms. Lin is like, she is able to paint a picture of the conflict between the Empires, the honor and pride of the people, the beauty of the land and the love and desire that grows and builds between Dao and Kwan-Li.
The only problem I felt with this novella is in a small way it felt like the deleted scenes of My Fair Concubine. I felt like there should have been more to the story, that I was getting the details of The Rest of the Story. Overall I would say great novella but read it as a companion. I received a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Vibrant Tool for those seeking to understand the energies and laws of the Universe through all religions and cultures!

I love this book! It was recommended as part of a series of classes for Energy Medicine conducted by Lisa Murphy at the Fairhaven Healing Art Center, fairhavenhealing@comcast.net. The ability to have the insight of Marja's work as she delves into all the indigenous cultures and for her to come up with the vital threads/energy lines that weave through the universe as creation and condense it into the Universal laws is amazing and I offer her my gratitude and thanks for this book! Finally someone tied it together and we now have a wonderful teaching tool to pass on !

This is the kind of philosophy that is the very reason we all love philosophy--because we're taking ideas from here and there, from ancient times and from today's social customs, and trying to combine them all into the big picture for us to make sense of how all the world's religions and civilizations, from ancient times to today, are connected to form the whole big picture. Isn't that the very reason we all read & research philosoophy, because we're interested in the commonalities between all the world's different points of view and perspectives? This author has done all this research as we have but taken it all the way, to form for us the real, big, picture...finally.
