The title pretty much says it all....

There is a reason that many workplaces ban Dilbert cartoons- they are just too darn close to the truth. I've lost track of the number of times that I've laughed myself silly after finding one of his cartoon arcs describing some experience in my own working career.

In his biography, Scott Adams is described as both an engineer and as a member of Mensa. Inspite of this, however, he has a sense of humor....

I'm sure that this confirmation of the absurdity of corporate "culture" has helped more than a few intelligent wage-slaves maintain their sanity over the years. It almost maintained mine.

"Dilbert, the customer liked the mock-up so much that he ordered a thousand!" "That was a MOCK-UP! We don't make that product yet! It would take us three years to make one." "Just give us a thousand mock-ups. The first one was terrific." "The mock-up was our competitor's product with duct tape over the logo" Just one of the various and funny strips you will find in this and other Dilbert books, Dilbert is a masterful parody of not just the bastions of the work place, but the social life that comes with being whatever type of worker you are. The fact that his company and pointy-haired manager are unnamed, and the fact that the product his company makes is never mentioned, and that his company never goes out of business, all add to the relateablility and the surrealistic humor. You've got sadistic talking animals(an evil cat that is director of human resources, a dog that thinks its smarter than everyone else and wants to rule humanity, and a totally clueless rat), and more. Read the newspaper strip, then go out and buy some Dilbert books.

A MUST-BUY & KEEP. Compared to alot of his other books, I really enjoyed this one and laugh all the way through. If you are a dilbert fan, this is one you must own. If you're not, but just looking for a good laugh, I highly recommend this collection

A look into the history of birds and words

Sometimes author Diana Wells gets a little too caught up in the etymology of various birds' Latin names, and then this book reads more like a dry encyclopedia than an affectionate survey of the relationship between some of the sweetest creatures on Earth and human language.
Usually, though, Ms. Wells succeeds in vividly tracing the evolution of the layperson's avian terminology. What does the word "titmouse" really mean? She'll tell you. And she takes the reader back into the farthest reaches of history and the roles that some of the most common birds have played in ancient society and even in biblical stories. For example, she explains with facility how nobility used falcons to hunt before guns were invented. She tells of how the starving Israelites, wandering in the wilderness after being freed from Egyptian slavery by Moses, came upon multitudes of quail. Thus, they feasted excessively on the birds until they became sick. The biblical interpretation of this mass indigestion was that the Israelites were punished for being so greedy, but Ms. Wells posits an intriguing secular explanation for what happened. You'll have to read the book to find out what that explanation is.
The author also helps the reader to view with tolerance what may be deemed some birds' shocking habits. The shrike impales small animals on walls and fences to eat later... not all that dissimilarly from what one might see in a butcher shop.

fun with bird words

Delightfully literate look at both the origin of bird names (etymology) as well as the common usage of the names. Wells first looks at Greek, Latin, or Egyptian sources for the names. For example, I did not know that Egyptian mummified Ibis, the source of the ibis name. She also calls up stories of early biologists as Linnaeus, Mark Catsby, and Audubon to look at some of the early naming. She relays Audubon's account of wood storks scratching his legs. She also includes both obvious literary references such as Coleridge's albatross in the Rime of the Ancient Mariner and more obscure ones as Hamlet not being able to tell a "hawk from a handsaw" (heron).
In a few cases her ornithological information is not precise, for example in discussing "American" prairie chicken she says they "exist further south" (than the Northeast), but further west would be a more accurate description. The illustrations are sometimes not completely accurate, as the depiction of the thick upturned bill of the avocet.
For anyone who has wondered at such names as "goatsucker" this is a good readable, source.

An interesting and informative history of bird names.

There is a wealth of knowledge in this small volume. However, one must be aware of just what this book represents. It is by no means a field guide. If your interests are identifying birds in the field, this book will be of no assistance to you. If however you are the sort of person entertained by word meanings and word origins and are interested in mythological, historical, and Biblical anecdotes this is the perfect book for you as it will offer up several amusing bits of bird trivia. I use the book as an icebreaker in my biology classroom. My students enjoy listening to interesting trivia about birds and are often intrigued by how certain birds actually got their names. Sometimes the taxonomical treatment of birds is cumbersome but overall this is a very readable and entertaining book easily understood by the lay person.

Grade 9 Up–Jonathan narrates alternating chapters of this latest adventure of the Insiders, Manhattan's richest, handsomest, most fashion-obsessed prep-school guys. The plot centers around New York magazine's Hottest Private School Boy issue. Jonathan thinks he'll be picked because of his totally great taste in clothes. It turns out that the magazine really wants Patch, but he's too busy having an existential crisis to answer his phone. Lothario Arno is picked instead. Meanwhile, the group seems to be breaking up into small cliques and David may be making a play for Jon's girlfriend. A plot hinging on a fictitious issue of a real magazine might be clever, if its premise and title weren't so ridiculous. Even the society pages of New York, where boys like these might appear, generally feature those old enough to vote. The characters develop only enough to be distinguishable from each other. However, the author's crisp, natural dialogue, and the sections written entirely in answering machine messages, are spot-on and hilarious. The debauched mood, short chapters, and simplistic themes make for a mercifully quick read. The unceasing name-checks of high fashion labels, celebrities, and hot New York clubs, present in place of setting, would bore even Paris Hilton.–Johanna Lewis, New York Public Library

This is the second time that I'm trying to read this book. The first time I couldn't get into it at all and just stopped reading it. But I decided to start on it again and it's the same thing. I just can't get into this book. Not saying it's a bad book, probably just not my sort of thing to read. I think it could be good for teens and people who are into shows like 'Gossip Girl' or something. I say if you're a teenager and this is your thing, it's worth a try..

This is the fourth novel in the INSIDERS series, which has yet to disappoint! I love the crazy antics of the boys (and their girlfriends); I just wonder if there is really a group of New York boys this crazy!

Mickey gets into some interesting forms of photography -- put it that way! He even comes up with a crazy way to get all of his friends into it. David begins dating Philippa again, but then something comes out about her. Arno is putting all of his energy into being the Hottest Private School Boy (Who I personally think should be Patch, but what do I know?). Patch is looking for what completes him, which may by one of the many girls of his past. Can you guess who? Jonathan is going out with Flan (Where did her parents come up with that name?).

There are some very interesting things that happen to the boys, such as partying too hard (as usual) and some thievery. No one wants a backstabbing friend. Here's a clue: the person hangs out with the Insiders but is not well liked by them. Read the book to find out all the hot gossip on the hottest guys around.

East Texas history comes alive.

I grew up in Jasper, Texas in the sixties and seventies and never knew the history of the land or what came before. This book was fascinating. It told about the earliest settlers to come to Jasper County and the rest of East Texas. Early explorers travels and what they saw are described in such a way that you can imagine yourself there. I really loved this book and will keep it to pass down to my children so they will know what went before.

A Common Tale

This is a beautifully written natural history book and if you're interested in East Texas, this book will hold particular interest. The mix of perspectives adds a unique twist on what is a common story of a great land that has been spoiled by human activities.

About the Author

Dr Amrita Narlikar is a Fellow of Darwin College, Cambridge. Her most recent books included New Powers: How to Become One and How to Manage Them, New York: Columbia University Press, London: Hurst, 2010 and (ed) Deadlocks in Multilateral Negotiations: Causes and Solutions, Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2010. She is the Director of Centre for Rising Powers, and University Senior Lecturer at the Department of Politics and International Studies, University of Cambridge.

Professor Martin Daunton works on the history of economic and social policy, most recently with respect to taxation, and is currently completing a book on the economic government of the world since the Second World War. He is Professor of Economic History in the University of Cambridge and Master of Trinity Hall.

Robert M. Stern has published numerous articles and books over the years in international trade and finance. His current research focuses on issues of WTO governance and related social policies. He is Professor Emeritus of Economics and Public Policy at the University of Michigan and currently a Visiting Professor at the Goldman School of Public Policy at UC-Berkeley.

James P. Davis debuted as a Forgotten Realms writer in Realms of the Dragons II. This is his second novel. He lives in Shreveport, LA with his wife and their demonic cat.

A decent story, with some flaws

The Shield of Weeping Ghosts by James P. Davis is the third novel in a series of stand alone novels called The Citadels. The other novels in the series are; Neversfall: The Citadels by Ed Gentry, Obsidian Ridge: The Citadels by Jess Lebow, and Sentinelspire (The Citadels) by Mark Sehestedt (July, 2008). The Citadel series focuses of citadels and tells their story in unique and interesting ways. These novels are much like the other series of stand alone novels that have been previously released, such as the Rogues, the Clerics, the Wizards, and the Fighters. Incidentally, Mr. Davis also had a novel in the Wizards series; Bloodwalk.

The plot of this book is actually rather difficult to describe. Being that this is a book in the Citadels series there is certainly a story being the citadel in question. However, as I was reading this novel, and upon completing it, I was left more confused that satisfied with how the actual plot was laid out. There is also a plot line involving a group of the seldom written about Rashemi. Along the way there are a couple other subplots such as an ancient evil, some distrust among the Rashemi, and a mystery that has permeated the Shield of Weeping Ghosts and the secrets it is protecting. The reason I say I was left confused is due to the fact that there are parts of the story that take place in the past, but are meshed together with the present. This, at least in theory, sounds like an interesting concept. However, as it's written it seems jumbled and often confusing as the two story lines fight for the attention of the reader. Instead of reading a story that was new and refreshing (in principle), I was left having to re-read (sometimes several times) sections of this novel to try and figure out what was going on and who it was happening to.

The characters in this book are solid and fairly well written. In particular the character Bastun. There is great depth to his character and an equal amount of character development. In fact, I will even go so far as to say his character was the most interesting thing in this book for me. There are a couple of other characters that feature prominently in this novel as well. Characters such as; Thaena who is an ethran with the Rashemi, Duras is member of the ethran's guard, Syrolf who is also a member of the ethran's guard, and Anilya who is a durthan. All of these characters were interesting, some more than others, and all played an important part of the story. Some of the dialogue seemed a little `off' to me, almost as though it was trying to meet up two separate plot points with an explanation from a character. When done the right way, these explanations (which can be found in many books) are fine, but when they start discussing information that the character shouldn't know, or know little about, it becomes unbelievable and taints the novel and I felt that way a couple times in this novel. Aside from the dialogue issue, I enjoyed most of the characters in this book.

A few criticisms about this novel.

1 - For me there was a great deal of confusion with certain parts of the book. I understand the wanting to create a somewhat chaotic feel, but when a reader is required to re-read passages of a book. It tells me that the author didn't succeed in explaining the scene. It was frustrating to begin to get into the flow of the story only to have to re-read a section.

2 - As I discussed above, some of the dialogue seemed forced. It actually felt as though the character wasn't talking to another character, rather that character was talking to the reader making sure they got a plot point.

3 - The lack of tertiary characters. To me, those side characters (even if they are there for a scene or two) add a certain depth to the story. They are not just mindless, faceless, fodder to be killed off when a death is needed.

Some things I really enjoyed about this novel.

1 - Bastun. Plain and simple. I really liked this character. I liked his character development, and I like where (and how) he ended the novel. Bastun is certainly one of the more memorable characters I have read about in awhile.

2 - I enjoy Mr. Davis' prose. It's fluid and doesn't try to be overly flowery. It pretty much is what it is and doesn't pretend to be anything else. It allows the reader to get into the flow of the novel quickly.

3 - I really appreciated the degree of description hat Mr. Davis added to this novel, without being overly descriptive. Some authors tend to get caught up in over describing things that really make no difference. Mr. Davis on the other hand, describes things quickly and to the point then moves on. This allows the reader to get an idea of the author's vision, but doesn't bog them down with needless details.

Overall, there were things I enjoyed about this book but things that frustrated me as well. As a Forgotten Realms story it's about average. I was not wowed by this book, but I wasn't left feeling cheated by it either. Confused, yes - but not cheated. I think that since I am not, nor have I ever really been, a gamer there are some things that I may not have picked up on. It's a fine line for authors in the Realms to write novels that readers will understand and `get' and at the same time providing information that gamers will appreciate. For Forgotten Realms fan they may enjoy reading about a group, the Rashemi, which are rarely written about. Being that this is a stand alone novel it is also a book that fantasy fans can pick up having no knowledge of the Realms. A decent overall story, but with some flaws.

My least favorite of the series

I don't think the book is confusing. I think the author tries to keep the readers in the dark to create a sense of mystery. It seems to be a common theme for all the citadel books but it didn't work so well for this book. The problem was that I felt like I was constantly forced to read whats next just to understand what was going on in the present. The pay off never really comes until the very end and by then it's too late.

Almost there

This novel is the third installment in, so far very good, Citadels series. It is also the second novel by James P. Davis, after Bloodwalk (Forgotten Realms: The Wizards) which didnt appeal to wider audience, but i found very nice nevertheless. There is also a very strong short story by Davis in Realms of the Dragons II: A Forgotten Realms Anthology if you want to check it out.

"Shield" is basically a story about an exiled Rashemi, an old citadel and a legend surrounding it. The atmosphere and the richness of lore are the strongest points of this book. Davis can really build up a dark and heavy atmosphere and keep it up throughout the novel. Makes the book feel more cohesive and even more intense.
Plot of the book is also very strong and well thought out. It has it's roots in a legend about the citadel, but where many similar novels just keep it as a beggining of the story, Shield keeps reminding the reader of the legend, and unravels it slowly through the plot. Nice indeed.
Characters are also interesting and while not very detailed aside from Bastun the main character, still solid and beleivable. To touch on Bastun a little. While being one of the most likable "heroes" (probably because not being a real hero) i read about in Realms novels, i would have really liked to read more about his history and training in the order of Vremyonni. We could say that his character is well defined, but his background not so much.
The biggest flaw of this novel, in my opinion, is that author goes into descriptive tirades at a number of occasions. Or to put it more simply, i felt this book was in dire need of some dialogue. It was description after description, introspection after introspection. Dragged it around a great bit for me.

All in all, a very good novel like previous ones in Citadels. Check them all out.

Mark Teppo is a writer of contemporary fantasy and historical fiction. Part of the creative team at Subutai Corporation, he is the head writer for the Foreworld Saga—a secret history of the West. Teppo is also the author of the urban fantasies Heartland, Lightbreaker, and The Potemkin Mosaic. A bibliophile whose interests include historical martial arts and esoteric traditions, he lives in Washington State.

Ripped off

This "prequel" is actually included in Mongoliad 2. I paid for it twice. I am not happy, so to use twenty words I say rip off, rip off, rip off. I only give one star because I cant give zero stars.

I read the three books in the Mongoloid series and enjoyed them.Enjoyed them enough to try the sequels or side stories. The first sequel 'Sinner' was mediocre but I thought I'd give this one a try. It is a word for word EXCERPT from the Mongoliad 2! And not even one of the better sections! I didn't envoy this part of the book when I read it the first time and now I've paid for it TWICE! Don't call it a sequel- it's a short excerpt! I won't be buying anything more from this 'saga'!

As far as I'm concerned, the expression "a is not unlike b" to mean "a is like b" is mere professorial twaddle. It serves only to distance the narrator from the story line. Mark Teppo uses that structure a lot in Sinner and in Dreamer. Maybe he does it because neither book has much of a story line in the first place and he wants to maintain his distance.

One might say that Sinner and Dreamer are not unlike a series of disconnected vignettes interspersed with random professorial twaddle.

But that's not the worst of it. Although both books claim to be unabridged, Dreamer lasts only 90 minutes and Sinner, 99 minutes. This compared to The Mongoliad Book Two which lasts for a total of 4,335 minutes. I paid an average of $6.34 an hour to listen to Sinner and Dreamer; I paid $0.15 an hour to listen to The Mongoliad Book Two. I don't think I got my money's worth for the first two. It seems to me that the author is taking advantage of Neal Stephenson's grand cash extraction scheme with a vengeance.

One might say that the author's greed is not unlike that of the money-changers at the temple in New Testament times.

Hmmm.

It isn't quite as good as other books I've read in the "Spanish Bit" series, but it's a good book. I'd love it to pass the time on a cross country flight or a night of insomnia--even just to read in the porch swing some sunny summer evening...

Doon Coldsmith Continues

Don Coldsmith continues to weave wonderful tales of Native American culture that keep you entranced and begging for more. I would recommend reading from the first book forward although the story is not lost no matter where you begin.
