Laura Pulido is Professor of American Studies and Ethnicity at the University of Southern California. Among her books is Black, Brown, Yellow, and Left: Radical Activism in Los Angeles (UC Press). Laura Barraclough is Assistant Professor of Sociology at Kalamazoo College and the author of Making the San Fernando Valley: Rural Landscapes, Urban Development, and White Privilege. Wendy Cheng is Assistant Professor of Asian Pacific American Studies and Justice & Social Inquiry at Arizona State University.

A must-read for the alternative tourist

There are likely few cities that have been more examined or described in the pages of the tour guide genre than Los Angeles. A simple Amazon search gives you over 1,400 travel books on Los Angeles, many of which are excellent companions to a trip to the Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles del Río de Porciúncula -- whether it be Hollywood Star guides, books on the strange and bizarre, on local hikes, eating in the city, and so forth. Still, in the pages of those fourteen-hundred or so books, you will not likely find a book anything like this one. In its pages, three Southern California natives (no transplants, however long) have dug into the full depth and breadth of Los Angeles history, from its humble beginnings as a small satellite to the settlement at the San Gabriel Mission, on through the boom years at the end of the 19th century, the war years, and on toward the present.

The book is broken into six regions, which is a good thing, since sprawl has meant that there are simply no easy ways to "see it all" in any practical way. In addition, the book offers a number of "thematic" tours that bring together a number of the 112 sites into common groupings, like: the independent and alternative media tour or the queer politics and culture tour, or the economic restructuring and globalization tour. Along the way, the authors not only give a snapshot of historical events and the current use/condition of each site, but they provide suggestions for further exploration, nearby sites of interest, and even nearby eating recommendations.

A People's Guide to Los Angeles stands as an excellent specimen of alternative tourism, of local knowledge, of place-history from the bottom up. It may not be for the tourist who's headed first to Grauman's Chinese Theater, and then to the Santa Monica Pier, before heading out to Disneyland, but it'll serve those who are interested in finding out about the Los Angeles in which most of its 10 million inhabitants (in the county) reside, as well as a wealth of information about the fascinating path it has taken since its beginnings in 1771 by forty-four settlers, A People's Guide is an indispensable reference for the native Angeleno and world traveler alike.

Best travel guide

Detailed history, good maps, and a social justice bent to it all. See the unspoken conflicts and landmarks throughout LA. Know your rights at the beaches near Malibu. See where people have fought for freedom and equality, not where John Travolta decided to eat a hamburger. My only wish is that they do this kind of guide for every major city in the US.

An enjoyable read

When I purchased this book I didn't realize that it was part of a series, so I will have to go back and read the other two. Still, I found the book interesting and entertaining. A previous review stated that the gods were infantile, but when compared to the antics of the Greek and Roman gods, it's no different. Also, since I have just finished the Shadowdale trilogy and started the Avatar trilogy, I was intrigued to get a little more understanding of the various planes and realms the gods inhabit and a hint of the vastness of the "multiverse". This book is written a lot different than the others I have read from the Forgotten Realms, adding to its charm (probably why I enjoyed "The Night Parade", too). If you're looking for something a little different, then this book might be for you.

My only complaint would be the fact that the plot rests on Lathander being far stupider than is likely. Besides that, this is excellent stuff.

This book gives some useful information about the planes to those who don't want to buy the Planescape products.The characters weren't so good as in the Finder's Stone Trilogy but I still enjoyed this book.I recommend this to those interested in the planes.

If one is interested in Native American law or the injustice of the decisions that make it up, this is a good starting point. A little legal knowledge helps, but it is an accessible book for college level readers.

Review of Thread Magic Garden

I began reading a copy of Ellen Anne Eddy's new book, Thread Magic Garden, and I am just amazed! Thread Magic Garden is a book for free-motion thread painters (embroidery) and I have never seen a book go into so much detail! Eddy teaches how to make over 20 flowers and a dragonfly, gives examples of what to cut and how to lay the flowers out. She does her work on a stabilizing sandwich, cuts out the designs, and then, there is no puckering or distortion around such heavily stitched flowers. She then uses more embroidery to stitch the flower to the quilt.
Ellen Anne Eddy is well-known for her beautiful embroidered quilts, and in Thread Magic Garden, you can see much of her work, some on a small scale, so we can see the details much closer. Just looking at her work will amaze you, and with her instructions included, this is indeed an inspirational book!

Excellent how-to-book

One look at Ellen's artistry with thread and fabric and the first thought is--I could never do that! Ellen's book fixes that! The directions are clear and concise, a unique art form made simple. The photography is wonderful, the pictures of Ellen's work inspire all from the novice to the expert. Do not pass up this book if you yearn to do more with a sewing machine than just sew straight stitches. Ellen makes this an achievable art form!

About the Author
Karl J. Friston is Wellcome Principal Fellow and Scientific Director of the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging and a Professor at University College London.

Dr Thomas E. Nichols is the Head of Neuroimaging Statistics at the University of Warwick, United Kingdom. He has been working in functional neuroimaging since 1992, when he joined the University of Pittsburgh's PET Facility as programmer and statistician. He is known for his work on inference in brain imaging, using both parametric and nonparametric methods, and he is an active contributor to the FSL and SPM software packages. In 2009 he received the Wiley Young Investigator Award from the Organization for Human Brain Mapping in recognition for his contributions to statistical modeling and inference of neuroimaging data.

In this book you can find many topics concerning the fMRI clearly developed, unfortunately, are quite complex mathematical content. For this reason it would be useful to add the examples developed as exercises to facilitate the reader's understanding. Whether the text is complete about the technical aspects of fMRI.

Great but who reads it?

If you do functional imaging of any kind this is a boko you need, at least for your library, because who can read this? This is very heavy literature on the subject of SPM written by the people who have developed and worked with this indispensable tool. However at times it is really incomprehensibel for normal human beings, but beautful nonetheless.

It is now well known that scattering properties of nonspherical particles can differ dramatically from those of "equivalent" (e.g., equal-volume or equal-surface-area) spheres. Therefore, the ability to accurately compute or measure light scattering by nonspherical particles in order to clearly understand the effects of particle nonsphericity on light scattering is very important.
The rapid improvement of computers and experimental techniques over the past 20 years and the development of efficient numerical approaches have resulted in major advances in this field which have not been systematically summarized. Because of the universal importance of electromagnetic scattering by nonspherical particles, papers on different aspects of this subject are scattered over dozens of diverse research and engineering journals. Often experts in one discipline (e.g., biology) are unaware of potentially useful results obtained in another discipline (e.g., antennas and propagation). This leads to an inefficient use of the accumulated knowledge and unnecessary redundancy in research activities.
This book offers the first systematic and unified discussion of light scattering by nonspherical particles and its practical applications and represents the state-of-the-art of this important
research field. Individual chapters are written by leading experts in respective areas and cover three major disciplines: theoretical and numerical techniques, laboratory measurements, and practical applications. About the Author
Dr. Mishchenko received an Ms degree in Physics from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in 1983 and a PhD degree in Physics and Mathematics from the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences (UNAS) in 1987. He was a senior research scientist at the Main Astronomical Observatory of UNAS from 1987-1992 and has been at NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) since 1992. Currently he is a member of the GISS senior research staff and an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Marine Sciences Research Center of the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Dr. Mishchenko was an Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Electromagnetic Waves and Applications from 1991-92 and has been an Associate Editor of the Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative Transfer since 1995.

View of an Anglo Native American Healer

Jewel Babb grew up in a way that was special even for a girl of her time. Her father and uncle were well-diggers by trade and they would set up a tent wherever they lived. The family, perhaps for religious reasons, didn't believe in the usual distractions. They didn't even tolerate playing cards. So young Jewel would entertain herself by walking the land wherever they were. In such a manner, she grew up very native.
Much later, married and then widowed, she tried to sort out how she would take care of herself. Eventually she inherited an old hot springs with a dilapitated spa resort built around it. This site had been used by the natives of the region for healing for as far back as memory could serve.
Jewel knew nothing of healing. But the reputation of the baths drew people in a steady stream. She allowed them access but initially did little more for them than point to where the pools were. Eventually she began to help them and to study reflexology. Curanderas from across the river in Mexico offered their knowledge to her as well. Over time her skills grew and became prodigious. By the end of her life she could heal people over a great distance by simply using her mind and spirit.
"Border Healing Woman" is a unique narative of a woman who made the most of her situation and was surprised to find she had a true gift for learning healing. Pat Little-Dog interviewed Jewel over time and recorded as well Jewel's fustration at still living in poverty while treating a steady stream of patients (most had little or no money). There were spiritual experiences in her life, however, which offset this material poverty. Highly recommended reading.

Held My Interest from Cover to Cover

The story is beautifully powerful, but it sure doesn't sugarcoat life in West Texas. I loved the grit of Jewel Babb and her appreciation of life. The portion of the book concerning Indian Hot Springs Ranch is especially interesting to me since my son recently purchased the ranch. I'm looking forward to cataloging the plants and springs that Babb used in her healing.

Science has not discovered this facet of living.

This remarkable story is well told and fascinating. The Healing Woman is a natural product of a simple life living relatively untouched by modern civilization and is embedded in her intimate relation to nature. She is unbiased and humble. For her, healing is not magic. Instead, hers is a gift and is completely practical and part of everyday life. The writer who visits the Healing Woman frequently, has done an excellent job of discovering and reporting the mysterious life experiences as accurately as possible. This book has preserved for use in consensual validation by others and is waiting for a time when open minded individuals wish to explore experiences that cannot be duplicated in science lab. It is an easy read.
