'This book, with its accompanying DVD, 'NOW I AM A REAL KID' has made it possible for us to witness what David Rosenfeld's treatment of Benjamin, a young boy with a diagnosis of autism, was actually like. We can see for ourselves what was done, what was said; we can follow the steps by which Benjamin moved from being a child without language, in a state of perpetual panic-stricken screaming and flailing about, to being a "real kid" with friendships, doing well at an ordinary school. Witnessing this transformation is a profoundly moving experience. So is hearing the testimony of Benjamin's parents, who had been told repeatedly that there was no future for their son. It was their wish that his therapy should be more widely known about, in the hope that professionals could learn from it so that other families' lives might be transformed as theirs had been through "Dr David's" intervention. Everyone concerned with children with autism is in their debt.'- From the Introduction by Maria Rhode, Emeritus Professor of Child Psychotherapy at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust

It is imperative that teachers build community in their classrooms and across their academic teams and grades in order to make school a safe and supportive place for adolescents. Teachers must help their students acknowledge that they belong to a group together, that they are part of a “we” or “us,” and that any differences—divergent talents, backgrounds, experiences, cultures, and skills—only make “us” stronger and better.

No More “Us” and “Them” delineates what steps educators can take to create an atmosphere where adolescent students feel accepted, included, and valuable to themselves and to their peers. The goal of this book is to change adolescent attitudes to lead to not just acceptance and tolerance, but toward an expansion of “us” and respect for their classmates that will serve to spread an even wider net of respect.

This book provides ideas for lessons and activities that can be integrated into existing curricula and that meet a variety of content area standards in language arts, social studies, science, mathematics, foreign languages, physical education, art, and music, while also proposing ideas for advisory or homeroom periods and class, team, and grade gatherings to build respect in our classrooms, our schools, and our communities.

Review
Truly a book embracing the 21st century learner which is focused on the STUDENT! In No More 'Us' and 'Them', teachers are provided strategies to hook students to become responsible for their own learning. A must read for every middle school teacher. (Sharon S. Sand, chief academic officer, Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools)

We have a lot to learn from our students and each other. Lesley Roessing shares her story that illustrates just how much you can discover through the power of collaboration. This book is a vehicle to share ideas and proven successful strategies. Just like our classrooms, our professional community “is built cumulatively, one activity at a time. (Lee Ann Wentzel, superintendent of schools, Ridley School District, Folsom, PA)

At the core of teaching and learning is a meaningful relationship between teachers and students. This new generation of learners requires special cultivation, purposeful dialogue, and relevant exposure. In No More “Us” and “Them,” Lesley Roessing does a masterful job of laying the foundation for teachers to use the stories in her book to inspire their own creativity in their classrooms to capture, inspire, and teach students who are unlike any generation before them. An easy read, with a powerful message of collaboration at its best, every teacher should read this book. It will motivate even the mediocre teacher to feel empowered to give more, listen more, and, more importantly, deliver more. (Stephen G. Peters, best-selling author of " Do You Know Enough About Me To Teach Me" and "Teaching to Capture and Inspire All Learners")

The research and literature is very clear that effective middle level schools create a personalized school environment by building connections with their students—and where better to start this endeavor than in the classroom? Roessing’s book not only shares the importance of building relationships between and among students, but gives practical, engaging strategies and activities that will appeal to young adolescents and help them learn to accept, value and respect both themselves and others. (Patti Kinney, associate director, Middle Level Services, National Association of Secondary School Principals, and 2006 president, Association for Middle Level Education (formerly National Middle School Association))

During a time of Common Core Standards and a 'teaching-to-the-test' mentality, Roessing reminds us that we have affective reasons to teach as well—the next generation must learn to respect and value differences or the world may actually cease to exist. Likewise, in a time when literature is being replaced by 'reading,' Roessing gives us a text that articulately shows why literature is important and how it should be used across the curriculum... This text puts the heart back into teaching. (Joan Kaywell, professor of English education, University of South Florida; senior executive director, Florida Council of Teachers of English, 2010-2011; membership secretary, Assembly on Literature for Adolescents of the National Council of Teachers of English; and author of Dear Author: Letters of Hope (NCSS Notable Book and 2007 VOYA Nonfiction Honor List))

No More "Us" and "Them" is full of useful ideas that teachers can implement immediately…. The activities and lessons in this book will help teachers break down boundaries, integrate fun into the classroom, promote respect, strengthen social skills, build community and, most important, offer students the life skills they need in high school, college, and the work force—skills such as collaboration and tolerance. (Middle Ground)

Practical help for teachers
By Maggie Grimm
In the busy day to day planning and execution of effective lessons, teachers are often pressed for time to search numerous sources for meaningful content. Roessing has written a go-to book of easy to follow, practical lessons that are guaranteed not only to improve student writing, but also to help teach our students much about becoming better human beings. Each lesson is designed to help students see the similarities rather than differences in those around them. Roessing is a master at designing lessons and activities that teach students how to respect themselves and others. As I plan my 5th grade writing lessons, I refer often to the ideas found within these pages.

A Classroom Community
By Deirdre Ward
Lesley Roessing has a talent for communicating to teachers the power of writing as a strategy to build a level of care for one another. The strategies presented can be incorporated with any grade level. As adults, when we delve deep into our past to share who we are, we project a respect for diversity. Early elementary children can do the same. By incorporating Roessing's ideas, we grow as a classroom community. We [teachers] model communicating fluently with the children in our class through speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The benefits of Roessing's lessons are all inclusive, running deeply across the curriculum. Deirdre Ward, Ed.D.

The Green Devotional: Active Prayers for a Healthy Planet, by Karen Speerstra

Our planet, our home, is in crisis plain and simple and this collection of quotes, poems, essays, and prayers will inspire all to actively reverse the man-made cause of global warming, stem the tide of environmental destruction, and to reconnect to the good earth. Short essays of topical interest introduce each of the eight sections of this book, and the 250 voices inside, most of them contemporary, began to harmonize together as they seem to call out for their own canonical structure — one bounded by the ancient elements: Earth, Air, Fire, Water. This collection of voices is like a “green book of devotional hours,” reminiscent of the Books of Hours medieval people used to hold in their palms. It was called “a cathedral in your hands.” And like that medieval book, The Green Devotional reminds us that we are connected to something broader and wiser than ourselves. Included are selections from such people as Rachel Carson, Cornel West, Bill McKibben, Alice Walker, Sue Monk Kidd, Dean Koontz, Barbara Kingsolver, Daniel Pinchbeck, Arundhati Roy and many others. The Green Devotional ends with a section of “Closing Prayers” that prepare us no just to go to sleep but to rest up for another day of passionate action. Printed on 100% recycled paper.

Review
"This lovely book could be read without blushing in the company of large trees and solemn animals, and even if you're in a room somewhere they may conjure themselves up from its pages. But hopefully it will spur you out into the great world, to soak in its beauty and to defend its future!" --Bill McKibben, author of The End of Nature

"Ask yourself whether the dream of heaven and greatness should be waiting for us in our graves - or whether it should be ours here and now and on this earth."

~ Ayn Rand

The world in which we live in is a majestic place to live. Its beauty can be found each day as the sun rises. In order to preserve this beauty it is our duty to respect our land and live by the philosophy that the way to love anything is to realize that it may one day be lost.

From the first pages of The Green Devotional: Active Prayers for a Healthy Planet you will discover a book that is a dedicated to showing how precious the earth is to our existence. It provides an overabundance of quotes, prayers, and chants that remind us to live ever hour to the fullest. The soothing mint green font that the book is printed in allows your eyes to relax as you begin to feel the peaceful presence that is encompassed throughout the pages.

One of the most fascinating articles I found in this book was written by Andrea Thompson and Ker Than, from their website [...]. It provides a timeline of what the earth will look like in the next 200 years. This timeline starts at 2008, and reveals shocking facts that have already come true since it was published.

The Green Devotional: Active Prayers for a Healthy Planet is a book that overflows with the beauty of the earth. It will give anyone a deeper appreciation for how precious the world we live in is; unless mankind realizes that they hold the power for future generations to experience this greatness the world as we know it could one day be in jeopardy.

Karen Speerstra's writing has opened my eyes to how much I have to do to preserve our world for future generations. I feel others who read The Green Devotional: Active Prayers for a Healthy Planet will also gain an eye opening experience. This one book could literally change the way we live in our own existence.

More useful on the second read
By Kaeli Vandertulip
I was originally going to rate this book lower than 4 stars because of the author's writing (more later), but I noticed that after putting the book down, I kept thinking about ways to improve my impact on the Earth and remained mindful of the effect of my actions. This is the goal of this book. The Green Devotional is written and its quotes collected from a clearly New Age mindset--there is something spiritual about all things and all faith traditions have something to contribute. It also falls into the 'Noble Savage' idea a few too many times.
I think there must be something in here for everyone (at least, something for everyone likely to be attracted to a book like this). Some of the more stirring quotes.meditations for me include:
"Blessed Goddess, hear the prayers of your children,
and make the increase of the fruits and grains your constant care,
with the fertile seasons your handmaidens,
draw near, and bless your supplicants." -This was one of the few actual prayers included.

"To forget how to dig the earth and tend the soil is to forget ourselves." -Many quotes were more like this; thoughts that could serve as motivation or ideas upon which to meditate.

There was also one I liked for my kids:
"It really isn't garbage till you mix it all together.
It really isn't garbage till you throw it away.
Just separate the plastic, paper, compost, glass and metal
And then you get to use it all another day."

But far more seemed silly inclusions, pointless, or completely random inclusions (especially in the sections she created), such as:
"An open bank account allows money to flow in. An open heart allows money to flow out. In the end, it's flowing love that counts." -Far too many quotes were random book extracts or illogical statements like this.

I really like the idea of this book and have noted some of my favorite quotes in it, so that when I want something to turn back to, I can skip some of the less poignant quotes. I also wanted to skip the introductory texts at the start of each chapter. Some were well-written or thought through. Most were a bit banal and took away from the idea of a Green Book of Hours. It was also rather distracting to have the book separated into eight sections based on elements, then to have her not follow any kind of theme within them. Oh well. It's still a good addition to any environmentalist's library and could be very useful for Unitarian ministers looking for help writing sermons.

As a random aside, for anyone who has read Margaret Atwood's The Year of the Flood: A Novel, this book struck me as something that the God's Gardeners would have used as their prayer book.

Made me much more aware
By Joseph Albiani
Though I generally agreed with the ideas of conservation and the world being fragile this book opened my eyes. While any page can be opened and can inspire I found Karen Speerstra's introduction to each section particularly informative and illuminating,as well as being well written. The amazing variety of people, known and unknown, in different times and cultures all speaking the same truth is a powerful stimulus to what we need to do as a planet. We seem to be in the 3rd phase of the great quote in the book from Gandhi"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win." This book can help make sure we win.

Assassin's Riddle: A Brother Athelstan Medieval Mystery 7, by Paul Doherty

It's the summer of 1380 and the corpse of Edwin Chapler, clerk of the Office of the Green Wax of the Chancery, has been pulled from the Thames: Chapler has drowned, but not before he received a vicious blow to the back of the head. Then Bartholomew Drayton, a usurer and money-lender, is found dead in his strongroom, a crossbow firmly embedded in his chest: a real mystery because the windowless strongroom was locked and barred from the inside. So who killed him; And how; And are the two deaths connected; Sir John Cranston, the Coroner of the City of London, comes to survey the scene. When other clerks are murdered, each with a riddle pinned to his corpse, Cranston enlists the help of his secretarius, Brother Athelstan; and together they must pit their wits against a deadly adversary bent on murder and mayhem.

An Assassin on the Loose
By J. Chippindale
This is the seventh book in the Sorrowful Mysteries of Brother Athelstan series. This novel combined with the early books in the Hugh Corbett series is one of Paul Doherty's earlier offerings and he has since written many more books and is now an established author of medieval novels and has also added a number of novels on Egypt to his ever growing list of titles. Having said that it is one of his earlier offerings does not mean that it is inferior to his current books, quite the opposite. The Hugh Corbett mysteries were and are extremely popular and Paul Doherty has found another winner with the Brother Athelstan series.

Sir John Cranston, the Coroner for the whole of the City of London, is well liked by the people of the city and few will stand in his way when he is trying to solve a crime in the city. But the case that he is involved with at the moment, with the help of is secretary and friend Brother Athelstan appears to have no witnesses and no one who can throw any light onto why the murders are happening.

Sir John had been call to watch the corpse of one Edwin Chapler, pulled out of the Thames. Normally the river men would have some idea of what had happened, but nobody knows, or if they do they are not saying. When more clerks are murdered Cranston and Brother Athelstan know they are up against something far more sinister than a drunken brawl.

It just keeps getting better!
By J. Aiello
I am a great fan of medieval mystery books and I always read them in order. As the series continue, most of them become a bit repetitious. They spend too much time rehashing who is who and/or descriptions of where they are, how they met, etc. I have learned to skim through those bits. Not with this series! Each book can stand on its own, but does do enough background so the continuity is maintained. These characters are interesing people and there is always some new aspect of their personality to be discovered (like in real relationships!). The story lines are fresh, too. I am on the ninth book and don't want the series to end.

Cranston and Athelstan to the rescue - again!
By NC Reader
I'm enjoying this series more with each book I read - I love the deepening friendship and "Sherlock/Watson" vibe between Sir John Cranston, King's Coroner, and his secretarius Brother Athelstan. The mysteries are satisfyingly complex, the villains (and often the Regent and his surrounding courtiers) are sufficiently dark, devious and deadly, and as always Paul Doherty brings stinky, thriving, brutal London to exuberant life.

I'm very proud that I had an inkling early on that one of the characters was not who they were pretending to be and indeed was a murderer - and I was right! Not to say that the plot wasn't sufficiently complex, it was - the action kicks right off with the murders of a miserly moneylender and several clerks from the Chancery of the Green Wax. A fortune in silver belonging to the wily Regent John of Gaunt has disappeared from the locked strong room of moneylender Bartholomew Drayton, who was left to die from a crossbow arrow to the heart. Gaunt orders Cranston and Athelstan to recover the silver but before they can begin to crack this locked room murder they are called to investigate additional murders - someone appears to be picking off royal clerks one by one, leaving behind baffling riddles to further muddy the waters...And just to keep things interesting, Athelstan's parishioners think they've got a miraculous bleeding crucifix on their hands and chaos grips St. Erdonwald's parish.

This is an older series by the prolific Doherty, who has several mystery series to his credit under several names. I enjoyed the Hugh Corbett mysteries very much and read them all but feel the last two books lost the spark for me; the writing seemed sluggish and dull, as if someone else had written them. Not so here; I feel the first few books in this series portrayed Cranston as a drunken buffoon and Athelstan as a priggish fussbudget, but they have grown so much as characters they are a real treat to read - in fact, I'm off to start the next in the series, "The Devil's Domain".

In the Cut (Vintage Contemporaries), by Susanna Moore

A stunning, erotic thriller by the bestselling author of Whiteness of Bones. Following the gruesome murder of a young woman in her neighborhood, a self-determined woman living in New York City--as if to test the limits of her own safety--propels herself into an impossibly risky sexual liaison. Soon she grows increasingly wary about the motives of every man with whom she has contact--and about her own.

From Publishers Weekly
Several stunning shocks await Moore's longtime readers in her fourth novel. First, there is the change of genre and locale. Her previous books (My Old Sweetheart; The Whiteness of Bones) have been lush, sensitive explorations of coming of age in a dysfunctional family in Hawaii, in an atmosphere permeated by island spirits and traditions. Here, Moore has honed her prose with knife-like precision to construct an edgy, intense, erotic thriller set in bohemian Manhattan. Her protagonist and narrator, Franny, is a divorced NYU professor deliberately closed off from emotional entanglements. She teaches a class for ghetto youth, meanwhile pursuing her obsession with language; she is writing a book recording the street vernacular and the black lingo of New York's seedier neighborhoods. Though on the surface her life seems circumscribed, she is a woman who takes risks, especially sexual risks. One night, she observes a man with a tattoo on his wrist in an act of sexual congress; though she does not see his face, she remembers the red-haired woman who had performed fellatio when she becomes a murder victim. Questioned as a possible witness by homicide detectives James Mallory and his partner Richard Rodriguez, she enjoys the frisson of danger when she takes Mallory as a lover, in spite of the fact that his wrist bears the same tattoo as that of the probable killer. The predatory, slightly corrupt Mallory is a coolly skillful lover, forcing Franny to push beyond sexual barriers into areas she has never explored. But in testing those erotic boundaries, she puts herself in mortal danger. Moore's control of her material is impressive: as she sweeps toward a knockout ending, she employs the gritty vernacular, red-herring clues and cold-blooded brutality of a bona-fide thriller without sacrificing the integrity of her narrative. The question is: will readers be disturbed?and perhaps repelled by?explicit descriptions of sexual acts, scatological language and gruesome violence? 100,000 first printing.

From Library Journal
Billed as an "erotic thriller," Moore's (Sleeping Beauties, LJ 9/1/93) latest is erotic, but it's certainly no thriller. The heroine is an English teacher who muses endlessly on the meanings of language, even at times when she should be experiencing intense emotion. She witnesses an event that leads to a grisly murder and becomes sexually involved with the cop investigating the case. Her closest friend, with whom she discusses sexual experiences in detail, is viciously murdered and mutilated by the same killer, and she herself falls victim, an interesting trick in a story told in the first person. Not only is the heroine distanced by language from her emotions, but so is the reader. Not recommended, although Moore has a following and larger collections may want to have a copy.?Marylaine Block, St. Ambrose Univ. Lib., Davenport, Ia.

From Booklist
A lot of new novels come bearing the publisher's plug "erotic thriller," but most pan out to be limp in both respects! Moore's smashing new novel is billed as such--and lives up to its promotion to the fullest. Taut and tense, sparingly constructed and beautifully written, this seductive story of seductiveness follows a deadly sequence of events in the life of a creative-writing teacher at New York University. One of her students is getting a little too close for comfort, but that's the least of her concerns. A murder has occurred within earshot and view of her Washington Square brownstone, and the investigating officer, when he comes knocking, presents a beguiling situation. Isn't he the man she saw in the basement of a neighborhood bar engaged in a sexual act with the very same young woman whose photo is shown to her as the murder victim? Isn't it fun, then, finding herself falling into an affair with the detective, all the while wondering if he's a bad cop, a murderer, in fact? When her best friend is murdered, the titillating game becomes far more than that. The twist at the end is the perfect cap on a book that will keep you up all hours finishing it. Brad Hooper

A Erotic Thriller - Not For The Faint Of Heart!
By Jana L.Perskie
Susanna Moore's tight, crisp, descriptive prose lends a special flavor to this darkly erotic thriller of a woman who lives life on the edge. Moore's novel is literary eroticism at it best and not just a mystery thriller about a vicious serial killer. Her manner of telling the tale is what makes it so unique.
Frannie, the novel's narrator, is an attractive 35 year-old divorcee who lives in a two room apartment on Washington Square. She teaches creative writing at NYU to a group of inner-city "low achievement teens" with high intelligence. She is also a connoisseur and scholar of language and is writing a book on street slang and its derivatives. Frannie takes chances. She is a sexual risk taker. However, she lives in her own private world where she spends an incredible amount of time pondering the nature of language, which leaves her vulnerable to her surroundings...and reality. Frannie is not at all street savvy. And her near-sightedness allows her to disengage even more from the potentially dangerous world in which she lives. One late afternoon in a neighborhood bar she makes a trip to the ladies room and inadvertently walks-in on a couple engaged in an intimate act. The man's face is obscured by shadow but she does notice that he has a unique tattoo on the inside of his wrist, (she has her glasses on). A few days later a NYC homicide detective, James E. Malloy, seeks Frannie out for an interview. There has been a brutal murder in the neighborhood. The victim is the woman Frannie saw performing the sex act in the bar. The evening Frannie saw her was her last.
Malloy takes risks also. He totally defies all rules about relationships between a detective and potential witness and acts on the tremendous sexual attraction between Frannie and himself. Malloy epitomizes the "tough guy with a badge," his frank blunt language adding to Frannie's turn-on...
Ms. Moore increases the suspense when Frannie is violently attacked on a dark street late at night. Then another murder is committed and the tension becomes almost too palpable. The climax is shocking. Warning - don't read the end of the book first. This is not a novel for the faint of heart. If you are a reader who is repelled by expicit sex or vividly portrayed violence, this is not for you. On the other hand, if you appreciate a well crafted, beautifully written erotic thriller, this one is excellent and original!

Edgy, Taut, Tense
By Amazon Customer
Susanna Moore's book is an edgy, taut, fast paced thriller. The story begins with Franny an NYU professor working with students from the projects in a writing class. This is a convenient relationship for her as she is able to work on her own book and fufill her obsessions with language forms, particularly slang usage in this area of NYC. Some professors comment on her inappropriately close relationship with her students as she often sees them outside of class to discuss their projects as well as her interests. On one particular night she goes to a bar with a student where she witnesses a man and a woman engaged in a sex act and this sets the plot for the book. This book includes alot of graphic sex scenes that Franny witnesses, recalls and engages in. She is not a particularly likable character and becomes less so as the plot moves along and she becomes involved in an investigation involving the murder of the girl she saw in the bar. The primary detective on the case, Malloy, is an interesting character who Franny senses is dangerous as well as exciting. As their relationship heats up, she begins to feel that she is being drawn into a dangerous, erotic game but doesn't want to stop herself . The last chapters of the book are page turners that I was unable to put down with an ending that doesn't disappoint. This book isn't for everyone though, it is graphic in both its sexual content and violent descriptions of the crime scenes. It is an exciting novel that will leave you thinking about it and its characters well after the book is closed.

steely and bleak
By A Customer
Susanna Moore's "In The Cut" is a thriller but an oddly detached one. Perhaps that's because her protagonist, a divorced writing teacher living in New York, seems detached from her own feelings and her own past; she observes both in fragments as the story progresses, and we get to know her only through refracted moments of recollection. It's a clever device, to sprinkle biographical data throughout the narrative instead of loading it up front, but in the end, we don't quite get to know her. Her true passion is words. She's a writing teacher, but her calling is linguistics. What I liked about this book was that Moore created a character who had interests other than those simply created to move the plot along. Her character spends a lot of time in her head, appreciating the music of language, the creation of new word usages and the evolution of slang; it would be easy to dispense with her as someone who lives too much in abstractions to appreciate the carnivorous world she lives in, but Moore doesn't pigeonhole her quite so neatly. The appeal of the ambiguous, sometimes threatening quality of words is mirrored by a similar appreciation of the menacing possibilities of human contact. This, of course, leads her protagonist into nothing but icy, gruesome trouble.

The other characters in the book are all needy, some of them venal, and none of them entirely reliable. Our protagonist passively allows an affair with a troubled detective to begin, a man whose temperament is only a shade more empathetic than Harvey Keitel's "Bad Lieutenant". However, as a dramatic foil he's just as opaque as she is, and the portrait left of him seems incomplete. But that's the way the whole book feels once you've finished it--as if there was more to be explained. Moore seems to be aspiring to the place Joyce Carol Oates occupies when it comes to conveying modern urban terror and personal disintigration; that's a pretty high standard, and she doesn't make it, but there is still some clever writing here. Most convincing are her observations of the nonverbal cues men and women give each other, and the way some people communicate when more is imputed than is ever said.

Air Plants: Epiphytes and Aerial Gardens, by David H. Benzing

Often growing far above the ground, "air plants" (or epiphytes) defy many of our common perceptions about plants. The majority use their roots only for attachment in the crowns of larger, usually woody plants-or to objects such as rocks and buildings-and derive moisture and nutrients from the atmosphere and by collecting falling debris. Only the mistletoes are true parasites. Epiphytes are not anomalies and there are approximately 28,000 species-about 10 percent of the higher or vascular plants-that grow this way. Many popular houseplants, including numerous aroids, bromeliads, ferns, and orchids, rank among the most familiar examples. In Air Plants, David H. Benzing takes a reader on a tour of the many taxonomic groups to which the epiphytes belong and explains in nontechnical language the anatomical and physiological adaptations that allow these plants to conserve water, thrive without the benefit of soil, and engage in unusual relationships with animals such as frogs and ants.

Benzing's comprehensive account covers topics including ecology, evolution, photosynthesis and water relations, mineral nutrition, reproduction, and the nature of the forest canopy as habitat for the free-living and parasitic epiphytes. It also pays special attention to important phenomena such as adaptive trade-offs and leaf economics. Drawing on the author's deep experience with epiphytes and the latest scientific research, this book is accessible to readers unfamiliar with technical botany; it features a lavish illustration program, references, a glossary, and tables.

Review

"Benzing's love for epiphytes is clearly evident, and the book provides an excellent introduction to the field. . . . By starting from first principles, it provides a tidy introduction to field botany to an undergraduate audience. . . . All the basic principles of botany are covered using epiphytes as model organisms. . . . The systematic overview of epiphyte diversity in particular provides an important, holistic grounding in epiphyte taxonomy, biogeography, and systematics. . . . There is something in it for everyone, from newcomers to plant biology to those who regularly climb trees to do their research."―K. C. Burns, Ecology (March 2013)

"Modest in size, but not in content and scope, Benzing's pithy gem of a synthesis appears 22 years after his technical monograph, Vascular Epiphytes (1990). . . . Summing Up: Highly recommended."―R. Schmid, Choice (November 2012)

"David Benzing's exuberance is evident throughout this book. His love of epiphytes . . . captivates the reader . . . . Benzing’s is a well-conceived and well-executed testimony to epiphytes and serves to bring together up-to-date information about these not very well understood plants. It provides a basis for further inquiry to round out our understanding of this peculiar life style of plants and points out areas where further study would be productive."―William Stern, Plant Science Bulletin (Fall 2013)

"Inspired by seeing an unusual plant at a childhood birthday party that led to a distinguished academic career, David H. Benzing has devoted his lifelong research to epiphytes, the extraordinary botanical denizens of the canopy. This book represents a comprehensive text covering all facets of air plants, required reading for both professional botanists and plant-lovers alike."―Margaret D. Lowman, Director of the Nature Research Center, North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, and Research Professor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, North Carolina State University, author of Life in the Treetops

"More than twenty years after his highly praised technical monograph on vascular epiphytes, David H. Benzing leaves the ivory tower and publishes a book on 'air plants' for a broader audience. His enthusiasm for epiphytes is contagious; every page is filled with insights gained in a lifetime devoted to the study of these plants. Highly readable, his account is still technically correct and a very stimulating read not only for the layperson but also for any biology student or biologist with an interest in epiphytes."―Gerhard Zotz, University of Oldenburg and Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute

Superb Book for Specialists and Hobbyists
By Masha
This book is a very detailed, very well-researched tome on epiphytes, plants that live out of the soil, usually hanging on other plants. I was interested in the book because I grow Tillandsias (air plants). There is practically nothing out there on Tillandsias, unless it's a little, truncated chapter in a book on orchids or bromeliads in general. Now we have this book! Not only are epiphytes fascinating, but they are tricky to grow if you don't know their peculiar structure and needs. Once you do, it's pretty easy. I would have liked an extra chapter on growing Tillandsias indoors, but that's beyond the scope of the book, which is more about epiphytes in situ than in cultivation.

Not a Manual on Epiphytes for "Neophytes"
By Aletheno
David Benzing is a botanist with a career-long researcher's knowledge of epiphytes. His book, Air Plants, presents as an advanced text for those already familiar with at least the basics of botany. Read with care, the book reveals the diversity and extent of this unique family of plants, replete with details on the variety of environments in which they may be found and the variety for forms that they take, including their nomenclature and biology. This makes for an excellent background work, but one challenging to anyone who is primarily interested in the practical care and breeding of epiphytic plants, such as the popular bromeliads and orchids. I have rated it high on the scale due to its informative nature, but caution some potential buyers to be aware that they are in for a challenging read.

Non-reductive science
By Meredith B. Handspicker
The subtitle of this one is "an introduction to the neuroscience of subjective experience." It is intended for the non-specialist, and they deliver on that wonderfully. The writing is compact but clear; the first section is "Introduction to Basic Concepts" that are necessary to understand the rest of the book. Frankly, it is the clearest discussion of brain anatomy, neuronal structure, and chemistry, that I have ever read. It was time to go to bed when I had finished, and I lay there going over the material in my head it was so attractively clear. Solms has been a mover in getting people to relate together neuroscience and psychoanalysis (he is trained in both).

Their second chapter on "Mind and Brain: How do they relate?" is a clear outline of the "mind-body problem" from the philosophical point of view, and a compact discussion of the various options (various monisms, interactionism, and parallelism). The chapter is set up with the distinction philosopher David Chalmers makes between the "easy" mind-body problem and the "hard" mind-body problem. The `easy" problem is what Francis Crick, in "The Scientific Search for the Soul," deals with: the neural correlates of consciousness. They agree this is an approach with great promise (except for its Crick's reductionism). The "hard" problem is how consciousness actually emerges from matter. (On this question they remain agnostic and tend to believe it is not soluble scientifically.)

They wind up with a "world view" (their term) that underlies their work and that provides the context in which they do their work while not itself being adjudicable scientifically. They call it "dual-aspect monism" : "We are made of only on type of stuff (that is why it is a monist position), but . . this stuff is perceived in two different ways. In our essence we are neither mental nor phyhsical beings. . Dual aspect monism implies that the brain is made of stuff that appears physical when viewed from the outside (as an object) and "mental" when viewed from the inside (as a subject). . . This distinction between body and mind is therefore an artifact of perception."

Finally, they believe hard-nosed AI is on the wrong track. "It is relatively simple to produce a computer that displays some degree of intelligent behavior and may therefore pass the Turing test under certain circumstances. . . But generating intelligent behavior is vastly different from generating a mind. . . A computer must be able to generate `joys and sorrows, memories and ambitions, and a sense of personal identity and free will (to paraphrase Crick) before we are persuaded that it possesses a mind. The fact that we are not persuaded vividly illustrates the gulf that separates the `easy' and the `hard' problems in cognitive science."

I've gone on too long already. At the end of the book Solms and Turnbull weave together the two methods, of neuroscience (body) and psychoanalysis (mind) to mount a more adequate approach to the dual-aspect beings which we are.

the best brain intro yet
By Maggie Zellner
Solms and Turnbull do a remarkable thing: offer a panoramic introduction covering all of the basics about all of the central aspects of inner experience that have been researched so far -- dreams, emotions, memory, identity, etc. -- and they do it in an extremely clear and readable way. All of the defined terms are highlighted in the text and clearly described. There is very little fluff at all; every paragraph and practically every sentence is necessary. The first chapter -- a basic overview of the anatomy and function of the brain -- is the best general introduction I have yet come across.

An outstanding book on both brain and psychoanalysis
By Norman N. Holland
This is the most significant book on psychoanalysis I've come across in a couple of decades. Solms is a neuropsychologist and psychoanalyst working in New York, London, and South Africa, and co-author Oliver Turnbull has worked extensively with him. Solms has mounted a sustained effort to put psychoanalytic theory together with what we are learning about the brain. He does this by doing a neurological workup of patients and then interviewing them psychoanalytically.

Solms' basic idea is that we now have (as Freud did not) two ways of looking at mind. One is Freud's way: we use free association, interpretation, etc., to look at mind subjectively. The other is the neuroscience way: objective studies of the changes in behavior wrought by changes in the brain. To find out fully about mind, we have to put these two methods together. And he does!

Frankly, this growing movement of neuro-psychoanalysis seems to me the only thing that will stave off the impending death of psychoanalysis. Solms addresses quite directly the afflictions affecting psychoanalysis and offers hope, very concrete grounds for hope. Also, the book can serve as a very nice introduction to neuroscience.

Let me put it quite bluntly: Anyone seriously interested in and concerned about psychoanalysis who doesn't read this book is simply nuts!

Norman Holland, University of Florida
