The Sweet Dead Life, by Joy Preble

The angel book gets a Texas makeover from the author of the Dreaming Anastasia series.

"I found out two things today: One, I think I'm dying. And two, my brother is a perv."

So begins the diary of Jenna Samuels, who is having a very bad year. Her mother spends all day in bed. Dad  vanished when she was nine. Her older brother, Casey, tries to hold together what’s left of the family by working two after-school jobs—difficult, as he’s stoned all the time. To make matters worse, Jenna is sick. Really sick. When she collapses one day, Casey tries to race her to the hospital in their beat-up Prius and crashes instead.

Jenna wakes up in the ER to find Casey beside her, looking pretty good. Better than ever, in fact. Downright... angelic. The flab and zits? Gone. Before long, Jenna figures out that her brother didn’t survive the accident at all, and she isn’t just sick; she’s being poisoned. Casey has been sent back to help Jenna find out who’s got it out for her, a mystery that leads to more questions about their mother’s depression and their father’s disappearance.

From School Library Journal
Gr 5-9-This colorful tale of Texas teens vs. comically juvenile adults moves quickly and is never short on laughs. Eighth-grader Jenna has already endured the disappearance of her father; the complete vegetablization of her mother; and a bizarre and sudden illness that turns her pea green, her tongue full of weird dark patches, and a rash on her feet that makes even her favorite pair of boots unbearable. So when her brother wrecks their Prius in an effort to get Jenna to the hospital, she doesn't quite notice the strange circumstances of the crash. She does, however, notice her brother's transformation from paunchy stoner to chiseled hunk. His appearance isn't the only thing that's drastically altered. Jenna's life takes a serious turn when she is informed that her illness is the product of slow and deliberate poisoning. Jenna and her newly reformed brother begin to question everything from their father's disappearance to their mother's mysterious ailments. Preble's narrator is spot-on, and readers will relate to her as she speaks, acts, and behaves like a 14-year-old. Although several questions are left unanswered, they don't detract from the story; if anything, they lend credibility. After all, some subjects are too complicated for a cookie-cutter ending. The Sweet Dead Life is a great addition to any collection.-Jennifer Furuyama, Pendleton Public Library, ORα(c) Copyright 2013. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. From Booklist
Fourteen-year-old Jenna has been seriously ill for a month. But the larger issues of her unemployed, depressed single mother and her mysteriously missing father distract her from taking care of herself. When Jenna collapses, her older brother Casey drives her to the hospital and ends up crashing their car. When Jenna wakes up, she finds that Casey seems to have gotten much better looking, and that the touch of his hand is incredibly soothing—that’s because Casey died in the car crash and is now an angel, remaining on earth to look after his family. There’s a whole lot going on here: poisonings, blackmail, sibling relationships, romance, and abandonment, in addition to angels, but the unifying thread is Jenna’s clever, bitter, self-aware, and loving voice. Told in journal entries that span five weeks, the novel’s multiple story lines will likely continue in a sequel. The small-town Texas setting is delightfully detailed but not parochial. Preble’s lively descriptions and unusually well-drawn, caring sibling relationship (a topic not usually explored in teen fiction) are especially noteworthy. Grades 8-12. --Debbie Carton

Frenetic but slow.
By Silea
It takes 99 full pages for this book just to get as far as the middle of the second paragraph of the back-cover blurb. That's right. You can read one and a half paragraphs to learn that Jenna's brother is dead, or you can read 99 pages.

The whole book is only about 250 pages long, so that gives you some sense of how it flows. 99 pages to cover what was summarized in less than two short paragraphs. It's non-stop frenetic action in which absolutely nothing happens. Jenna agonizes about whether to use 'the A word' to describe her brother. Jenna and her dead brother drive to school, to home, to a restaurant. Jenna does her homework. It's the opposite of gripping, well-paced fiction.

Now, i must admit, the frenetic going-nowhere feel of the book is a pretty fair depiction of some of the more caffeinated 8th graders i've known, but since i'm not a caffeinated 8th grader, it was just tiring.

This book will not go on the shelf for my kids to discover. It's full of profanity for profanity's sake, and the frequent revisitation of the incident in which Jenna catches her brother masturbating is guaranteed to offend both those who agree with Jenna that such activity is perverted and those who think it's natural and shouldn't be considered perverted.

The writing is pretty good, but the content is at best forgettable.

Great book for teens dealing with changing family roles
By Kurt Conner
This is a charming and engaging story of a tough-on-the-outside teenager as she adapts to her brother's transformation from a stoner to an angel. It's definitely geared to a teen audience, with just enough mild profanity to keep teenagers interested without slipping into anything too vulgar. It's not a sappy romance, and all of the supernatural elements are plausible within the context of the book.

The central mysteries are not tough to figure out (the book cover reveals the secret of the brother's transformation, and there are very few possible suspects for the whodunit part of the mystery story), but that's just fine because the book is less about the mysteries and more about the protagonist adapting to the changed roles that develop when a family loses a member. Yes, Jenna doesn't like her brother's new powers and the spooky poison sneaking into her body, but this largely reflects that when your dad walks out on the family, the world is a scary place, and maybe you resent that your brother has to take a paternal role. This is a great book for teens with similarly shifting family structures, as the emotions always play realistically, so a concerned adult can use this book to start conversations.

Readers concerned about the angelic element should know that these angels are not tied to any particular spiritual tradition. The book is not preachy, and the angel characters still curse and goof around like everyone else.

On a personal note, I was delighted with how well the book captures the North Houston suburban experience. Mrs. Preble was my English teacher in high school (which is why I chose this book from the Amazon Vine program - I don't read much YA lit, other than the Hunger Games, but I was curious to read a real published novel by a teacher who taught me in my first creative writing class), and she writes like someone who has been listening to teenagers in my hometown for years. The way they kind of view going to the Galleria as special but too crowded, the constant consumption of kolaches, the UT/A&M rivalries, the appreciation for cowboy boots in a context completely removed from any actual cowboy work, casual mentions of nutria... This book feels like a homecoming for me, culturally, so someone reading this review should know that I may have loved it from a personal bias that isn't shared. Still, I think anyone who cares about teenagers, especially teenagers themselves, will find something to love about this book, whether or not the reader knows North Houston.

fun and entertaining
By Tabitha
This story started out great. The voice is lively and engaging, the relationship between Jenna and her brother is real and believable, and Jenna's life feels like it belongs to a typical teen. At the same time, everything is clearly wrong. Jenna's mom won't get out of bed, and Casey has to work two jobs in order to pay the household bills. I was completely sucked in based on the summary above and the first chapter.

The pacing wasn't quite what I was looking for, though. The summary gave away too much of the first half of the story, so I found myself impatient to get to the parts where I didn't know what was going to happen next. To be fair, that's not really the fault of the story, but of the person who wrote the summary. Unfortunately, it makes it seem like the story is slow.

I liked the characters a lot. Both Jenna and Casey feel like real kids trying to do the best they can, given their raging hormones and other unusual problems at home. They're flawed, but that's what made them so likeable.

There's no actual romance, but there's the promise of it in the future. The ending felt like a setup for the next book, though, as well as the role that Jenna's love interest will play--I'm pretty sure there's a plot twist hiding in there, and I wish it had been a little less obvious. :) That said, it didn't diminish my enjoyment of the story, and this book could still be satisfactorily read as a stand-alone.

Overall, I found this fun and entertaining, and Jenna's dialog is quite funny at times. If there is a next book, I'll be reading it.

Age appropriateness: there isn't any sex, language, or graphic violence, so I'd say this story is appropriate for younger teens and pre-teens.

Silent Spring Revisited, by Conor Mark Jameson

American scientist and author Rachel Carson is said to have sparked the modern day environmental movement with the publication of Silent Spring in 1962. She made vivid the prospect of life without birdsong. But has her warning been heeded?

Fifty years on, Conor Mark Jameson reflects on the growth of environmentalism since Silent Spring was published. His revealing and engaging tale plots milestone events in conservation, popular culture and political history in the British Isles and beyond, tracing a path through the half century since 'zero hour', 1962.

Around this he weaves his own observations and touching personal experiences, seeking to answer the question: what happened to the birds, and birdsong, and why does it matter?

Review
Jameson... has skillfully stiched together a narrative that reveals the highs and lows of conservation, and will, I am sure, convince many that the good fight is still worth it. Birdwatch A clear and concise historical overview of the failures and successes of the conservation movement since the 1960s; and it will rightly find a place on many a conservationist's bookshelf. British Birds In Silent Spring Revisited, Conor Mark Jameson's vividly told, beautifully written account of the environmentalist movement of the last fifty years and his own involvement in it, the author takes his place among the pre-eminent nature writers of our times. His clear, vivid writing skillfully weaves political and cultural history, personal observation and passionate advocacy for the conservation of our diminishing wildlife to create a book that will endure in the annals of natural history. Marie Winn, author of Red-Tails in Love and Central Park in the Dark Your book was riveting. It gave rise to several different emotions within me, Sadness/anger/despair/frustration/enthusiasm. Wonderfully written, intersperced with humour. Factual - it must have taken you forever to do the research. Cracking good stuff and needed to be said. All you need to do now is to get everyone who matters to read it. John McGlashan, Farmer

5 decades of envirnonmental observations
By Mike "Madbirder" Nelson
In this book Conor Mark Jameson reflects on the impact Rachel Carson's ground breaking book Silent Spring had on his life and the effects on nature predicted by Carson. Given from an English standpoint and covering his life from the sixties to present day in the UK and Ireland and starting from his Ugandan birthplace, it is a stark reflection on the impact man is having on bird populations and their plummeting numbers. It also talks about the rise of the green movement and its impact on political parties and policies through this time.

Reflections of shrinking bird numbers are given from a personal standpoint from observations in his garden and local patch throughout his life but also from a global perspective of oilspills, urban development and neglect of the environment through pesticides. There are morsels of hope throughout the book on rebounding numbers in a few species and the joy at finding once thought disappeared species or the survival and increase of species released into their old stomping grounds and efforts of environmental groups trying to stop the slide to a silent spring.

This is a good read at times disturbing, at times uplifting but at all times a continued warning that if change on a large scale doesn't come soon we could end up with Rachel Carson's prediction of a silent spring.

An important well researched book.
By Richard Hines
This well researched book gives a detailed history of conservation over the last half century, including the author's own research into our lost birds. Yet it is much more than an account. It is brought to vivid life by the inspiring and sometimes poignant personal stories of the author who has spent his life championing birds nationally and internationally. The book is beautifully written with memorable descriptions: a dipper's song carried down a river; a frozen bird under a bridge; the bleak landscapes and destroyed hedgerows of East Anglia, which contrast sharply with the hedgerows of the author's neighbourhood, which as a parish councillor, he and other hedge laying volunteers have laid themselves. In my opinion Silent Spring Revisited is an important, well written book.

An enlightening read
By H. Wenley
I have not read Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring but I will be doing so now after having read this book.

Silent Spring Revisited gave me insights to the environmental history of the United Kingdom that I was totally unaware of and was very surprised to learn just how long it has taken for the UK Governments to start caring for their environment. I lived in England from 1972 until 1989, and had no knowledge of the efforts that environmentalists were putting into protecting the flora and fauna. What a tragedy the oil spills have been along the coastlines!

This book has opened up my eyes and made me even more aware that we as humans need to respect and care for our world.

Good start to a new trilogy
By Andy Gray
Sanctuary is the latest novel by Thompson and Cook set in the Dragonlance world. Before you go any farther, if you are considering reading this book there are two books that I think you need to read before you read this one. The first is The Puppet King by Doug Niles and the second is The Lioness by Nancy Berberick. These two books set the stage for this new trilogy.

This book follows the exiled elves as they try to cope with being exiles from their land as they try to forge lives for themselves in a land they are not used to. Admittedly, I am not a big fan of elves, however, Thompson and Cook have proven to me that they can weave a tale worthy of reading. If you have yet to read the Ergoth Trilogy, I highly suggest you do so. Some of the best Dragonlance work out there today.

On to Sanctuary.

Being this is the first book in the trilogy, it has what one would expect. There is a lot of background information setting up the story and the major players of the story. The background information also allows the reader to have a pretty good idea of what has happened thus far, but if you don't read the two books I mentioned above first, you will lose the true scope of what has happened. If you don't, you will be able to understand this book, but it won't be as enjoyable for you.

The plot is pretty straight forward in that the elves are trying to find a new homeland to call their own while at the same time trying to keep their race alive and flourishing. However, what looks on the surface as a straight-forward plot, soon turns into several small subplots each with the potential to affect the main plot. The authors proved they could do this type of plot with the Ergoth trilogy, and once again they prove apt at doing so here. There are several plots running through this story that at times the reader may `misplace' a character only to have them appear and shock you with what they are doing.

When I first learned that the book would center on the elf king Gil and his wife The Lioness, I was a little apprehensive that these characters had been written by other author and how would that affect the characters continuity. Those fears were quickly resolved as the authors made these characters their own, without `stepping on the toes of the previous authors'. Since the characters had been written about before, the character development is a little slow. This book is obviously story line driven. However, by the end of the book I can see a lot of potential for the next two books to begin to focus more heavily on the characters. That's not to say that there was no character development, just not as much as in stand alone novels or novels that are more character driven.

The authors prove that they were n fact the right people to tap for this story line. Just by reading the first book I can tell this story line will have some dynamic consequences all across the land of Krynn, Thompson and Cook were certainly the right couple to do this trilogy.

As always it's time for my recommendation. As I said in the opening if you haven't read those other two books I may hold off on this one. If you have read those other two, have no fear of jumping right into this one. This is a very good book to what may prove to be a Krynn shattering trilogy. I didn't like this book as much as the Ergoth Trilogy, but I loved the Ergoth trilogy so that is a high level to live up to. Never-the-less, I say read this book if you are a fan of the Dragonlance world. You won't be disappointed.

A slow start
By RK
This was a very slow and disappointing start, to what I was hoping would be a good trilogy. The only thing that kept me going was hoping that all the setup would eventually end the the later books might better. The only reason I was interested in that is because of my love for the story of the elves of Krynn.

The writing in this book was subpar. The characters were shallow and the points of view that kept shifting from one paragraph to the next was diconcerting. Even the well established characters such as Gilthas and Kerianseray did not absorb me as they have in previous books. Not to mention the nomads and khurs, who were abominably boring.

The ending started to pick up some pace but since I never really cared for most of the characters I felt it was too little to late. However, I'll keep reading because I want to see what happens to the elves of Krynn.

Pretty Good Start to Trilogy
By Mary Griffith
Sanctuary is the first in the Elven Exiles trilogy. I bought this trilogy because I had previously read the War of Souls trilogy and always wondered what happened to the elves. At the end of the last book from the War of Souls, the story with the elves was left very open ended. I had liked the elven characters, especially Gilthas. Although I was a bit skeptical about reading a Dragonlance book not by Margaret Weis or Tracy Hickman (I had not had the best of luck before), I enjoyed this book. The characters seemed true to those found in the War of Souls trilogy (as far as I remember) and were still interesting. The writing style wasn't the greatest, but it was still overall an enjoyable read. I would recommend it to any Dragonlance fans and I look forward to reading the other two books in this trilogy.

Mattias was searching for a friend, while Samuel was longing for his big love, a young sailor on the edge of manhood. Samuel's funeral leads Mattias back to an unanswered question. Why did he dedicate his life to a stamp collection instead of really living it? Finally an old letter of the passed away friend resolves a well kept secret ...

`Mnemosyne: The state of faithfulness toward the first light, toward the earliest perceptions'
By Grady Harp
Håkan Lindquist is a Swedish writer living in both Stockholm and Berlin who has written five novels, numerous short stories, articles on art and literature and even an opera libretto. Why he is not better known in this country is truly a conundrum. His gift for creating characters and atmospheres is astonishingly vivid, and he combines this ability with a technique of weaving a story that is both visually beautiful on the printed page while proving that ideas for novels that may challenge perceptions about human behavior are exceptional fodder for fine literature. He deserves serious attention.

Samuel Gunnarsson is a middle-aged man who meets 12-year-old Mattias after a bike accident: Samuel's mother Carolina rescues Mattias, dresses his wound, and in the process Mattias meets Samuel. Upon hearing the lad's name Samuel states `Mattias. It means `gift from God'. Did you know that?.' Samuel and Mattias begin a warm and loving friendship in which they share a love for stamp collecting and books and butterflies and nature.

This delicate story is revealed by Lindquist in a manner of flashback thoughts, as the actual book begins about thirty years after their first meeting. Mattias returns to attend Samuel's funeral. He thinks about everything that Samuel told him over the years. About Samuel's loneliness and his one and only love, the beautiful sailor, William, and how Samuel seemed to compensate for his lonely state by dedicating his attention to stamp collecting. This memory story is offered in sensitive parcels in a sans serif font size smaller than that serif font that keeps us in the present: portions of the memory parcels are repeated throughout of the book as new meanings are revealed about the friendship. Mattias attends the funeral, meets a girl who had attended Samuel in Elephant House, an assisted living home where the sad Samuel spent his last years, visits Carolina whose senility precludes filling in the interval history and Mattias retraces steps of the places where he and Samuel frequented years ago, ultimately visiting their old hiding place in the bell tower of an old church, where he finds a letter addressed to him, written by Samuel, to be read after his death. Here Samuel reveals the dreadful secret that has tormented him all his life, secrets he could not share with Mattias when they were long ago friends.

Samuel is gay and senses that Mattias is also, but there is never any acting out on those attractions. Though warned by his mother about spending overnights with an older man with all the sexual implications she implies, Mattias and Samuel continue their special, warmly shared friendship until Mattias moves to Stockholm and letter correspondence, increasing infrequent, is all they have - until Samuel's death and Mattias' discovery of the soul of the man he deeply loved. Mattias recalls special dreams and memories he shared with Samuel. Mattias had asked Samuel `Have you been to Venice?' and Samuel replies 'Like von Aschenbach, you mean. In `Death in Venice'. No. I've mainly traveled with the help of books. Books and Stamps. And imagination. You can go quite far. Actually.' He smiled and looked at [Mattias] with his lovely eyes. `Very far. To beautiful places, where fantastic things happen...'

This luminous novel radiates love, and friendship, and longing, and a story about a man and a boy we will never be able to forget. Håkan Lindquist is an artist, a wordsmith who stands with the finest of contemporary writers. Highly recommended reading. Grady Harp, April 12

Kolt Raynor wants to get back into the good graces of Delta Force, even if it kills him. His bad decision on an earlier case caused deaths and his ejection from the unit. Now a terrorist has purchased missiles, and, after a test run shooting down a plane over Europe, he has set his sights on the U.S. Raynor has to work with former teammates who don’t trust him, and with newcomers who might be too raw to rely on. And the clock is ticking. Author Fury is a Delta Force alum, so he knows what’s he talking about and how to give his narrative a sense of authenticity. Raynor comes across as unlikable in the beginning, but as the story progresses, he becomes a hero worth rooting for. The relentless action and the scary scenario make this a quality read for fans of Vince Flynn and Brad Thor. --Jeff Ayers

Wild, Exciting Ride!
By Mike C.
I'm a sucker for military action books so I pre-ordered Tier One Wild and eagerly devoured it as soon as it dropped onto my Kindle. I ordered this book for its entertainment value and was not disappointed despite having elevated expectations after reading Mr. Fury's previous two books. It is a wild, action packed, can't-put-it-down read which puts it right on the edge of being a 5-star effort.

HOWEVER... while the author's raw talent is clearly on display, I'm a little surprised he still exhibits the rough edges of an FNG author: some of the characters are woefully underdeveloped, a few characters who figure prominently for a few chapters -- and *are* well developed -- disappear suddenly without a trace, and the climax of the story happens literally at the end and there is no resolution phase (Fury did this with his previous book too -- and no, the epilogue of Black Site was a prelude to this book, not the resolution to the last one). From my perspective, this lack of resolution leaves me somewhat frustrated at the end of an otherwise excellent book which is why I'm only giving it four stars.

Dear Mr. Fury: as a former operator you know the value of teamwork and letting folks who are specialists in skills you don't have to do the tasks you cannot. Please, please, *PLEASE* team up with an experienced fiction writer and/or writing coach who can help you take your skills from "pretty darn good" to "tier one" before you publish your next book.

He's Back !!!
By Brian M.
I was lucky enough to recieve Tier One Wild before it hit the shelves and finished reading it a few weeks ago. Kolt is back and this time you're in for an even Wilder ride than in Black Site. Dalton Fury has once again delivered a heart pounding, palm sweating, grab you by the collar ACTION novel that reads so good I wasn't able to stop even when I told myself I would 3 pages ago. The realistic descriptives of every detail paints a vivid picture page to page and twists and surprises from every angle. The ride with Kolt and his new team on missions is sure to leave you just like it left me, wanting a 3rd book from Dalton Fury and wanting it in a hurry !!! Tier One Wild was worth every penny, enjoy.

Mr. Furys first two books were amazing and this one is no different. I would highly highly recommend this book and his other two to anyone looking for a exciting and all around great read. I really hope we keep getting more. Between Dalton Furry and Brad Taylor we are lucking out with badass authors. If they could talk Peter Blaber into writing again we would be set!

From Booklist
Dorothy Martin, the American-born schoolteacher and amateur sleuth who makes her home in England, returns in this new entry in a popular series. On a visit to Buckingham Palace, Dorothy and her husband, Alan, a retired chief constable, discover a dead body in a private section of St. James’s Park. As it turns out, Dorothy and Alan’s friend, a former chief inspector, knew the victim, and the friend asks Dorothy if she could, discreetly, try to find out what happened to the victim. Fans of British cozies will enjoy this one very much (although readers who prefer more action might find it a bit lethargic. Martin isn’t quite as engaging a character as Hilda Johansson, heroine of Dams’ other series, and the contemporary setting isn’t quite as compelling as Hilda’s early-1900s environment, but Martin’s fans—of all her work—should be pleased. --David Pitt

A Good Cosy Read
By Kay T. Hamner
Another entertaining read from Jeanne M. Dams. Her Dorothy Martin character and Dorothy's husband show that getting older doesn't mean the loss of romance or adventure. The plot in this book in the series seems a little more far fetched than usual, but nevertheless, a good, easy entertaining rainy afternoon read.

In this latest book in the series, Dorothy and Alan, along with a friend, Jonathan, a disabled detective, work together on solving this crime.

London Calling!

If you love London or would like to visit London, read this book. It is a mystery but it also acts as a travel book. Dorothy spends most of the novel in London and explains the history of each area as she hunts for the murderer. Dorothy is her usual self and of course her Inspector husband is by her side. You'll enjoy it!

Useless characters, interesting setting
By John Ottinger III
The best part of the novel is Telarian, the supposed villain. In a misguided attempt to help, the diviner causes a great deal more trouble than he realizes. This is a good example of how the ends don't always justify the means. Cordell really plumbs the depth of what that means, and how a misguided attempt at doing good can do so much harm to so many. To tell you more would ruin the novel, but in this one, our heroes and villains, while identifiable, all have bits of good and bits of darkness in them. It's a yin and yang fantasy. In its style, content, characterization and all other elements, the entire novel shows that there is a little bit of good in everything (actions, words, deeds) as well as a little bit of bad.

Forgotten Realms fans will enjoy Stardeep. Those who love novels with elves will drool over this one. I recommend this as a good shared-world novel. It has fun action, unique characters, and a setting little explored, even by other Forgotten Realms authors. And if you enjoy it, Cordell has announced that this is not the end of Stardeep's characters. His next novel will continue their stories. I for one am looking forward to it.

A Good Forgotten Realms Novel
By JJ
I was very surprised when I read the review by Andrew Gray "Beezer MN". I did not agree with most of his review. Yes, there is a bit of a sci-fi feel with some portions (specifically related to the intelligent construct introduced in the novel), I did not think that was at all detracting from the story or the "realms" feel of the novel. The realms are wide and there are many powerful and fantastic creations, and I found it to be a nice touch to see a different take on magic constructs.

The story and character development were pretty straight forward, as most one-off realms novels are. I did enjoy the authors incorporation of lore from other stories/novels/books. If you are not a dedicated reader of forgotten Realms novels, you can still read this book and not miss any part of the story. If you are a Forgotten Realms fan, and I assume you are if you are buying this novel, then you will probably enjoy these references.

The previous reviewer felt there were too many characters in the novel and found this difficult to follow. It was pretty obvious from the beginning who were the good guys and who were the bad guys. All of the characters introduced in the book had a part to play and theu were certainly easy to keep track of.

I have read most FR novels and I very much enjoyed this book. I have never written a review of any book, but I just felt that the one star given by the other reviewer was way off base. I would rate this a solid 3 or 3.5 stars. however, to balance out the 1 star rating, I have given it a 5.

As far as FR novels go, this was a good one and I hope to read more about several of the characters (Kiril, Raidon, and maybe even Gage)

One of my favorite books
By Jeremy Cline
I am an avid reader, and this is one of my favorite books. Not just in Forgotten Realms either. The tone is fairly dark and the premise vary compelling. You can hear a synopsis in other reviews so I won't go into that, but I think this book deserves more positive reviews. I wouldn't read the other reviews if I were you, as they tell the whole book while trashing it at the same time. I have read this book several times and I am sure I'll read it a again. Give it a chance...

More than just text books.
By george a freeman
Don't let the page size fool you. This compact book is packed with information.
That can take you from ideal to iBook store.

Or if you prefer you can make great books for your friends or family.

Just a few of the things i have made.

- Digital scrapbooks with video and audio

- Combine different snippets from the web to make your own how-to style books.
Much better than random bookmarks in a folder.

- A book that contains all of my instruction booklets. Having everything searchable is wondrous!

I can't overstate how clear this makes iBooks Author to use.

Recommend for beginners up to the seasoned traditional publisher looking to incorporate this exciting program.

The author needs to follow his own advice...
By Amazon Customer
Viewing this book in Kindle cloud reader on one screen while having iBooks Author open on another is a lesson in frustration. The author chooses to jump all over the place by telling you a small bit of info then saying 'Read the details in -hyperlink- or Back in -hyperlink- or You can -hyperlink-' which breaks the process. Once you head to a hyperlink, you have no way of getting back to the original page using keyboard navigation or the back arrow. There may be a dozen or more hyperlinks on any given page which does little but confuse the process. It seems he wants you to be able to skip around in the iBooks Author process to make it easier to understand by giving you all of these links but the bottom line is this, if the author would explain each process in a structured manner, you wouldn't have all these confusing links to deal with.
The first third of the book was decent but once he got into actual workflow integration, it all fell apart. You can't externally reference a dozen different processes when all you want is to understand text flow or section layouts. It's like a Wiki that flips out to numerous sources each of which reference further sources which reference further sources, ad infinitum.
I thought maybe the iBooks store version would be more dynamic but the sample I downloaded was the same thing, fixed text, fixed sample figures, and convoluted hyperlinks.
The author does manage to show some of the hidden usefulness of iBooks but overall the book itself is very poorly structured.

The Dirtiest Race in History: Ben Johnson, Carl Lewis and the 1988 Olympic 100m Final (Wisden Sports Writing), by Richard Moore

The 1988 Seoul Olympics played host to what has been described by some as the dirtiest race of all time, by others as the greatest. The final of the men's 100 metres at those Olympics is certainly the most infamous in the history of athletics, and more indelibly etched into the consciousness of the sport, the Olympics, and a global audience of millions, than any other athletics event before or since.

Ben Johnson's world-record time of 9.79 seconds – as thrilling as it was – was the beginning rather than the end of the story. Following the race, Johnson tested positive, news that generated as many – if not more – shockwaves as his fastest ever run. He was stripped of the title, Lewis was awarded the gold medal, Linford Christie the silver and Calvin Smith the bronze.

More than two decades on, the story still hadn't ended. In 1999 Lewis was named Sportsman of the Century by the IOC, and Olympian of the Century by Sports Illustrated. Yet his reputation was damaged by revelations that he too used performance-enhancing drugs, and tested positive prior to the Seoul Olympics. Christie also tested positive in Seoul but his explanation, that the banned substance had been in ginseng tea, was accepted. Smith, now a lecturer in English literature at a Florida university, was the only athlete in the top five whose reputation remains unblemished – the others all tested positive at some stage in their careers.

Containing remarkable new revelations, this book uses witness interviews - with Johnson, Lewis and Smith among others - to reconstruct the build-up to the race, the race itself, and the fallout when news of Johnson's positive test broke and he was forced into hiding. It also examines the rivalry of the two favourites going into it, and puts the race in a historical context, examining its continuing relevance on the sport today, where every new record elicits scepticism.

Review
“It is always a sign of a good book that you pick it up and never want to put it down. The kind which you rattle through forty pages or so without realising, due to the brilliant writing and readability of the material. Richard Moore has managed to write a book so well thought out, so painstakingly researched, that you cannot fail to appreciate just how good it is. A book which covers every aspect of the Johnson-Lewis story in such minute details, that it should be the first port of call for anyone who wants to learn anything about the subject…I could only ever dream of writing a book along the lines ofThe Dirtiest Race in History. But as a sports nut, and for someone fascinated in the Johnson-Lewis rivalry, you have to be thankful that Richard Moore has produced such a high quality book on one of the biggest sporting events of the 1980s.” ―That1980sSportsBlog

Enjoyed this book on an unforgettable event
By LSmith
Review

The 100 meter final in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul has been called the greatest race in the history of track and field. Ben Johnson of Canada and Carl Lewis of the United States headlined the event, which resulted in Johnson winning the gold medal with a world record time of 9.79 seconds. However, the post race drug testing found that Johnson had traces of illegal substances in his urine and was disqualified. This book by Richard Moore examines the activities and training of these two men and how it ultimately leads to the event being a historical one for completely different reasons.

Moore researches the lives and training of both Lewis and Johnson thoroughly. Nothing is left untouched - their workout routines, the trainers each used, the methods used by those trainers and yes, the substances that were used as well. While most remember Johnson's disqualification, it is worth noting that the author does not paint a rosy picture of Lewis for this topic either. Lewis was also found to have traces of banned substances after the US Olympic trials, but he was able to compete due to officials accepting his explanation. It should be noted that athletes were given chances to explain the presence of the substance in their samples, including during the Olympics, and Lewis' was deemed satisfactory.

The stories of the two main runners were richly portrayed. I was especially enamored with Moore's portrayal of Lewis and how he reacted to the negative media he often received, including his lack of sponsorship opportunities after winning four gold medals in the 1984 Olympics. Both Lewis and Johnson are thoroughly examined in the book. A very good book that is a great read for not only sports fans, but those who like to dig deeper into controversial topics.

Did I skim?
No

Did I learn anything new?

Yes - while I was aware of the rivalry between Johnson and Lewis, I did not realize how much bitterness there was between the two athletes, especially on the part of Johnson toward Lewis. Also, this book will reveal the identity of the "mystery man" who was with Johnson during the drug testing immediately after the 100 m final. Now, of course I am not going to reveal that if you don't already know - you have to read the book!

Pace of the book:

Good for the most part. Some of the sections on the trainers and the science behind the drugs was a bit heavy and slowed the book down.

Positives:

Excellent research and insight into the two athletes, especially Johnson. Other runners in that 100 m final such as Calvin Smith are also covered well.

Negatives:

Only the aforementioned parts of the science behind the drugs. While interesting and an important part of the story, I felt that those without the background knowledge would be lost reading this section.

Do I recommend?

Yes, for track and field fans and also those who enjoy the Olympics, whether watching or researching history.

Putting meat on the bones
By LeanerMeaner
I've been a T&F fan for a long time and have read Charlie Francis' book Speedtrap and seen the 30 for 30 documentary, 9.79. They are both fascinating, and this new book by Moore covers a lot of the same ground.
But I was still very satisfied with it. You get a much richer picture of the competitors, especially Ben Johnson, and the other actors, such as Joe Douglas. And the writing is very good, engaging and detailed but not overly so. This should be a compelling read for anyone with an interest in elite sports. And as the Lance Armstrong affair shows, the same issues keep resurfacing.

Excellent Read
By K. Smith
The Olympic 100m men's final of 1988 is the moment I became hooked on track & field. In this book Richard Moore tells the story of the build-up to this race with great detail about the climate of the sport. This is a wonderful read for even those who are not fans of the sport like myself.
