About the Author
Mª del Carmen Avendaño López received her doctoral degree in Pharmacy at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) in 1970. In 1986, she became Full Professor of Organic Chemistry at the Department of Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry of this university, being responsible for one of its research groups. Between 1993 and 2009, she was a member of the Scientific Advising Committee for the Profarma Program, organized by the Spanish Ministry for Industry to incentivize research activities at the pharmaceutical industry. She was appointed Vice-rector in charge of Postgraduate Degrees at the International University “Menéndez y Pelayo” in 2005-2007. She participated in the development of the Spanish Society for Therapeutical Chemistry and has also been a member of several scientific international societies and assessment committees. Since 1999, she is a Fellow of the Spanish National Royal Academy of Pharmacy where she is in charge of all activities related to Medicinal Chemistry, with particular focus on the relevance of chemistry in drug discovery and development. She has co-authored several chapters in periodical series and encyclopedias, including “Comprehensive Heterocyclic Chemistry” and “Science of Synthesis”, and has edited and co-authored several Medicinal Chemistry textbooks, most notably “Introducción a la Química Farmacéutica”, published by McGraw-Hill Interamericana in 1993 and 2001. In 2008, she co-authored with Dr. Menéndez the first edition of “Medicinal Chemistry of Anticancer Drugs“ for Elsevier. Her research activities, documented in about 200 publications and some patents in collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry, have dealt with the development of synthetic methodologies to obtain biologically active molecules, with particular focus on antitumor natural compounds.

José Carlos Menéndez was born in Madrid (1960) and obtained degrees in Pharmacy from Universidad Complutense at Madrid, UCM (1982, with Excellence Award) and Chemistry from UNED (1985) followed by a Ph.D. in Pharmacy from UCM in 1988, under the supervision of Dr. Mónica M. Söllhuber, with Excellence Award. In August 1988, he joined the group of Professor Steven V. Ley at Imperial College, London, where he worked on the total synthesis of the natural ionophoric antibiotic routiennocin. In September 1989, he returned as a Profesor Titular to the Organic and Medicinal Chemistry Department at UCM, where he has pursued his teaching and research career ever since, having obtained Accreditation as a Full Professor in 2010. He has varied research interests, related, on one hand, to medicinal chemistry work in the fields of neurodegeneration (prion disease, Alzheimer’s disease, ischemic injury) and chemotherapy (cancer, tuberculosis, leishmaniasis). Other projects pursued in his group are focused on the development of new synthetic methodology, including work on microwave-assisted organic synthesis, CAN as a catalyst for organic synthesis, green chemistry and the development new domino and multicomponent reactions for the preparation of biologically relevant bicyclic systems and nitrogen heterocycles. This work has been documented in about 210 research papers, reviews and chapters and 9 patents. Additionally, he has co-authored two textbooks in Medicinal Chemistry for McGraw-Hill Interamericana (?Introducción a la Química Farmacéutica, 2nd Ed." 2001 and "Ejercicios de Química Farmacéutica", 1997), and a third one for Elsevier ("Medicinal Chemistry of Anticancer Drugs", 2008). He is the coordinator of a Master Course on Drug Discovery, and the coordinator at UCM of a Ph.D. program in Medicinal Chemistry. He has collaborated with many research groups in UK, Italy, France, and India and also has some long-standing collaborations with several chemical and pharmaceutical Spanish companies. He has been the head of the Organic Microanalysis service at UCM since its creation in 1991. Since 2004, he is a Corresponding Member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Pharmacy. He has been a Visiting Professor at Université Paul Cézanne (Aix-Marseille III, France) in 2007 and at the Istituto di Studi Avanzati (ISA), Bologna University, Italy, in 2014.

One of the best medicinal chemistry on anticancer drugs! Unlike others simply giving out the name of the molecules, this book details the inhibitory mechanism of DNA damage agents by "arrow pushing". Other drugs by non-covalent binding were illustrated through their binding modes. In addition, a broad spectrum of anticancer drugs and targets has been covered ranging from traditional cytotoxic target like DNA, topoisomerase, microtubules to more recently popular molecular-target like kinases. This book is one of the most completed reference for anticancer drug mechanism that should belong to every cancer drug developer's library.

Soon after Anderson's arrival, two anonymous men appear at the same hospital, one with legs meticulously shattered from ankle to hip, the other one castrated, with the by-products of the deed deposited in a jar of moonshine. The arc of the story lies between the attack on Forrest and that on the two men. Bondurant endows his gritty story with all the puzzle-solving satisfactions of a mystery. The book is mainly narrated through the experience of the youngest Bondurant, Jack (in truth, a grandfather of the author), and his family’s moonshine enterprise supplies the action in a plot that evokes the culture of distilling and distributing white lightning. Enticing, Graphic, Americana, and Utterly Brilliant

I am a sucker for good historic fiction and this is an excellent slice of Americana from the red clay dirt of Virginia: Franklin County, to be exact. The story starts in 1918 with the introduction of the Bondurant family and the trials of the day - the great influenza epidemic. From there the story jumps to 1934 (current timeframe) and then to and from 1928 as it brings the background into the story. This is done very nicely and the story is brought together from several angles using the real life reporter/writer - Sherwood Anderson (author of Winesburg, Ohio - now available from the Guttenberg Project public domain), as way to tell the story from the present tense. Anderson mentions that he has had run-ins with Hemmingway and Billy Faulkner - and as I read this story, I couldn't help but to see Bondurant's attempt at a similar style to Faulkner, but with an updated and more modern flair. The characterizations are rich and peeled back like an onion to reveal layer after layer of the main characters' history and development. The author also uses a technique that I haven't seen - there are no quotations to delineate the verbalizations between characters. Not unlike some of the masters of the past, Bondurant has established a writing persona - i.e. Faulkner's use of not identifying the character and making the reader use their own identification through the conversation.

Matt Bondurant calls this a work of fiction based on fact from his family's legend - thereby giving the reader a glimpse into the Bondurant family tree. The time frame are the years just before prohibition has been extinguished, and the moonshine business is in full swing in Franklin County with the Bondurant brothers thick in it. There is a little of everything in this book and the author concisely tells the tale in about 300 pages. But the story is not just told to the reader, it is described in terrific detail with sometimes graphic and sometimes beautiful prose. As you are grabbed by the story, it is nearly impossible to put down this book.

The author has researched his subject material very well indeed. His depiction of this era is superb and the wording paints the mural so well the reader is visualizing the entire surroundings. You are in Franklin County and watching the events, not reading them. This is a brilliant work and well worth the time to read it - and it won't take you long, as I just couldn't stop until it was finished.

This is a slice of time in America that we can only read about and Matt Bondurant is able to give us this period of time and allows us to leave our current life and live within this one. Often people will ask why I read so many books, and I'll say that with a good book, I can be transported into the story, into a time that I never saw, or into a place that I'll never visit; this is one of those books. This not just a good book; I rarely give out 5 stars, but Matt Bondurant has earned all five of them with this potential classic.

Great Material, Not So Great Presentation

During Prohibition and beyond, Forrest, Howard, and Jack Bondurant (the author's great-uncles and grandfather) decided that one way to keep their families going through the worldwide Spanish flu epidemic, Prohibition, the Great Depression, and a crippling drought was to found a moonshine dynasty. The infamous Bondurant brothers were major bootleggers in Franklin County, Virginia, which Sherwood Anderson, covering a story there, called "the wettest county in the world."

Although the material that Bondurant has to work with reflects a fascinating period in America's history, I found his presentation of it somewhat dry (no pun intended!) and often confusing. He chooses to use a straightforward prose style that minimizes punctuation; for example, quotation marks are eliminated altogether and commas nearly so. This style can be intrusive even in the best writers' hands (Cormac McCarthy comes to mind). There is, after all, good reason why punctuation was standardized to begin with: Remember your primary teachers telling you that it is meant to help the reader? It's true, for this reader at least.

Also, the novel jumps around in time, from 1918 to 1934 to 1928 to 1929 and again to 1934, back to 1919 then to 1930, and so on. To a limited extent, this approach helps pique the reader's interest, as when, for instance, we meet two of the Bondurants' competitors in the hospital, appallingly mutilated, while in the reader's mind the Bondurants are still just simple farming folk. Because the timeframe moves so frequently and randomly, though, the reader finds himself often disoriented and struggling to piece together the story. I repeatedly had to flip back to check what year it was and work out whether some earlier event was part of the foundation for what was happening now or whether it hadn't occurred yet.

Sherwood Anderson serves as a sort-of narrator, staying in Franklin County to do research to write about what was happening there. For the most part, this helps the novel, bringing to it an unenlightened point of view that parallels the reader's own. However, the frequent references to Anderson's testy relationship with other authors of his time, the building of his new house, and other details of his life outside of Franklin County add needless minutiae for the reader to sort through and allocate to their places in the story; ultimately, they have none, and seem to be mostly just an English major showing off.

I had a difficult time getting to know and care about the book's characters, at least partly because of the effort it took just to follow their stories. It wasn't until nearly the end of the book that it began to matter to me how any of it turned out. One of the parts I liked best was the brief author's note at the end, because by then I finally knew everyone and was interested in what had become of them. I wish the author had made this happen much earlier.

Death in the Afternoon

To dismiss the infamous Bondurant brothers as simply country bootleggers would be selling them short....and risking your life.

They had carved a nice living as moonshiners in Franklin County, Virginia, but that is not even half of the story. Each played a role in the criminal success story due to very unique personalities; Jack was always angling to strike it rich through a big score, Howard was a haunted veteran of World War I who enjoyed drinking the hard stuff as much as marketing it and Forrest was a tough as they came - he had a deep neck scar to prove it - once walking nearly 12 miles in the snow to receive medical assistance for a slit throat.

But when the trio refuses to pay "security" money to police, it leads to an even more wild ride in the turf wars where only the strongest could survive to fight another day, where the battles during the waning years of the Great Depression included shootings, knifings, beatings, shakedowns and brutal types of revenge that were fates worse than death for men.

Author Matt Bondurant chronicles these turbulent times of his grandfather and two granduncles in this novel that is based on the true story of their lives and the ripping apart of the veil that covered the lawlessness through a 1935 conspiracy trial which took down many players, but found journalist Sherwood Anderson chasing the shadows of the brothers to get to the heart of the story while attempting to break the county code of silence found within this vicious game.

Through dialogue and gripping scenes that are not for the faint of heart, Matt Bondurant brings to life an era where big city gangsters may have captured the national headlines, but these rural areas packed a gangland cruelty that was especially brutal. And that Matt Bondurant is talking about family makes this story even more compelling.

A Night of Unexpected Fun!

A fun all night romp around London is just what two strangers contrive, and are desperately in need of, before reluctantly accepting the unwanted marriages that their respective parents have planned for each of them. This is a Cinderella story where the couple leave the ball together and really let their hair down more and more as the night progresses. Their antics are fun and unexpected and made for a charming read.

About the Author
MONTE AKERS lived in Freestone County, Texas, where the events in this book took place, for nine years. He is now a partner in the Akers & Boulware-Wells law firm in Austin. He is also an adjunct professor at Texas State University–San Marcos.

This is not a pretty story. It "skims the joy off the pan of conversation." It asks thistle questions and offers scorpion answers, but it needs to be told.

I lived in Freestone County from l981 to l990, and heard a seven-word summary of this story the first week I was there. It was whispered to me by a fellow employee of Dow Chemical Company.

Like me, he was an outsider, and he did not know any facts, but the story was the kind that needed whispering more than it needed facts. The story was the kind we each thought we understood in about seven words.

The seven words he whispered to me were "Kirven is where they burned the niggers."

I forgave him his poor choice of words at the time, rather like I might forgive a new acquaintance for having bad breath or dismal table manners. His use of the N-word told me eloquently that although he and I might be co-workers, we would not be close friends. We were too different.

I grew up in a place where race was rarely an issue. People in our little corner of the Panhandle of Texas seldom used words like "nigger" or "spick" or "kike" in the l950s and 60s. There were no blacks, and few or no Hispanics, Oriental people, or American Indians.

Folks determined to be prejudiced against an entire category of people had to content themselves with resenting the numerous Germans who inhabited the area. Beyond that, the human penchant for discrimination had to be satisfied with more fragmentary antipathies, such as that of Methodists for Baptists, of ranchers for farmers, of haves for have-nots. As a result, I grew up with no preconceived notions about the inferiority of one race in comparison with another.

Freestone County had a lot of outsiders in l981. The energy crisis of the 1970s and the search for alternative fuel sources had attracted several large companies that were buying and leasing rights to mine lignite, a brown coal abundant in the region. The commerce and economic opportunity were welcome, but distinctions between natives and outsiders were carefully preserved. There were also subjects the natives preferred outsiders not probe. This story was at the top of the list.

In l986, I was elected chairman of the Freestone County Historical Commission, an unexpected elevation for an outsider. The position resulted in my learning some of the county's darker secrets. That is when this story seized me and would not let go.

I do not claim to be uniquely qualified to write about the history of Freestone County, and I am certainly not qualified to pass judgment upon it. Indeed, there are natives living there today who would pronounce me, an outsider who lived there only nine years and who was not reared around black people, particularly unfit to do so.

Nor do I present this work as a scholarly analysis of the practice of lynching in America. While that subject may be the shiny white bone poking from beneath America's closet door, our nation's holocaust, the door has been pulled open and the skeleton examined hundreds of times.

Still, this particular story, details of which have never been published, deserves particular attention. Although neither the participants in the events nor those who live in Freestone County today were aware of it, the lynchings in Kirven received widespread, even international, publicity. That attention helped contribute, albeit indirectly and gradually, to the end of the practice of racial lynching in America.

To those who would say the telling of this tale serves only to open up old wounds, stoke the fires of racial debate, or promote feelings of resentment and victimization, I respond that I have thought long and hard about those possibilities. My hope, however, is that the telling of this tale may actually contribute in some small way to the healing of American racial relations.

Such a claim may seem preposterous, but the idea has given me hope since it was first suggested by a bright, young, black attorney who heard this story and described how she believes it fits into our nation's racial history and the four stages of human grieving.

Comparing America's aching racial past with the death of a loved one, she regards those people, black and white, who prefer that the past remain buried, as being in the first stage of the grieving process, that of denial. Others in the country are in the second stage, that of anger, while others occupy the third stage--sorrow. Still others, many in the South, are in the final stage, which is healing. She believes, and I agree with her, that healing requires knowledge, as well as acceptance, neither of which can come until stories such as this one are finally told. When blacks and whites can rationally discuss events such as those which occurred in Kirven, the nation will be closer to acceptance, healing, and recovery.

Finally, the tale is worth telling for its irony and poignancy. Indeed, some of the details, unintended consequences, and coincidences of the story are richer, fuller, and more incongruous than I can capture. I had to try to capture them, however. I have known about the events for seventeen years, and have been researching and writing about them for twelve. Yet I cannot speak of some of the details without emotion catching in my throat.

What follows, what now begins, is the story of Freestone County, Texas, in l922. Events that year in this rural, previously unexceptional part of Texas--"this cold world of care"--affected, and changed, the nation. The tale is not complete, and never can be, but even if every illuminating truth and solution is not revealed, the story supplies the best that history can offer--a chance to study something that should never be repeated.

History Comes Alive

The start of the book was slow but necessary to get some background into the characters that populate the book. Then, things really start to take off. 1/3rd of the way through, I could not put it down.

As a Texas genealogist, I found this book really compelling. As I read through it, I surfed over to Ancestry.com to pull the 1920 census from Freestone county Texas. This helped to flesh out the characters all the more. I was amazed to learn that of the sampling of the census records I reviewed (2 of 10 districts) over half of the inhabitants were black or latino. This points up another injustice that is often overlooked historically: These were taxpayers that were supporting the government that was hobbling them in every way.

While some may be amazed at what "God fearing" citizens would do in a mob, I, for one am not. I am never amazed at the violence perpetrated by our White fore fathers though I am often saddened. A land born of blood will take a very long time to shed itself of that origin. We can't do it over night and it seems as though a couple of hundred years won't be enough time either.

Kudos to Mr Akers on his well researched work.

What can cause civil, "God fearing" citizens of a small Texas community to commit such atrocities? What can cause the breakdown of rule of law and complete abandonment of American values? What can convince individuals that it is necessary and proper to burn a man alive on the town square of their community?

This book is a reminder that hatred and evil does not just live in some foreign land or some corrupt urban metropolis. It exists down the street and may be harbored by our neighbor or our drinking buddy.

While the events of this book happened more than 80 years ago, the author conveys what we Texans know; Too many civil "God fearing" people in our communities would say "he had it comin to him".

This book is important not just to Texans but to everyone to remind us that the monster is still there and can still be awakened. This book reminds us that we must be forever vigilant, not just in a small Texas town but anywhere.

High marks for Flames After Midnight.

"The cycles of existence are odd. particularly for those of us experiencing them for the first tme that we recall.

This year, 2012, tracks the days of the weeks of the events in Kirvin 90 years ago--the 4th is Friday, etc."MA ...On my third reading of Flames After Midnight by Monte Akers, I find it more facinating with each read. All information about the characters come to life, with familiarization. All reasoning, and lack there of...come to lite as i become familiar with the timing of the emotions set into play with each event that starts a chain reaction of mob rule. The same exists today with modern times events unraveling showing human emotion taking over - over reasoning and fair deliberation. Actions in the heat of moments- taking over due process of law. Will we never learn ? Admittedly, most of us do abide by the law. It is not a martial law state of the union yet. Yet. *this book should be required reading for all public and private schools, open discussion-forums on due process, and how things could have been done different. Or not. Perhaps dealing with circumstances as presented in this form, in this historical time...can only make us examine ourselves. Had i been there-how could i have made a difference in the writing of this tale of vengence, hatred, envy, and every other human emotion that one can think of. All are part of the story of Eula Ausley King, the alledged vengence of a white family, it's chain reaction on all the other people in town-be it white-black-and mixed, a town, and county, Texas state, the country, and then, the world. Is a ripple in the water felt on the other side of the earth? answer: Like a tsunami! 05-04-22. God bless you Eula King. Time only amplifies your heartbreaking demise. When a dissertation gets completed, the normal rule is that it is never read. By anyone. David H. Levy’s dissertation - The Sky in Early Modern English Literature: A Study of Allusions to Celestial Events in Elizabethan and Jacobean Writing, 1572-1620 - is different. It opens a whole new interdisciplinary field, which involves the beautiful relationship between the night sky and the works of the early modern period of English Literature. Although the sky enters into much of literature through the ages, the period involving William Shakespeare and his colleagues is particularly rich.

When Shakespeare was about 8 years old, his father probably took him outside his Stratford home into their northward-facing back yard. There, father and son gazed upon the first great new star visible in the past 500 years, shining forth as brightly as Venus, and even visible in daylight. This new star, which we now know as a supernova, completely unhinged old ideas about the cosmos. Combined with a parade of bright comets, a second bright new star in 1604, and a series of eclipses, people began to look at the sky more seriously. In this book, Levy explores how the sky of that period was reflected in its literature.

Levy’s ultimate goal in this book is to inspire his readers to do the same thing as their ancestors did so long ago―look at the sky and appreciate how those long-gone authors read the sky.
