Not based on correct Catholic teaching

I had read much of this book and I wanted to say that many of the answers are incorrect and full of errors. I would stay away from this book if you are looking for CORRECT Catholic answers to married life.

Solid Advice for Married Life

It doesn't seem right that I should be the first to review this book. I am reading through the "101 Quesitons" series from Paulist Press (see my other reviews), of which, this is the 23rd volume and that's why I read this book. Not being married, I have no personal reason for reading it.

Anyway, "101 Questions and Answers on Catholic Married Life" was written by Catherine Johnston, Daniel Kendall, and Rebecca Nappi, of whom, the latter two wrote the previous volume on Catholic Marriage Preparation. As a result, this book expands on topics which the previous book only touched upon, which I greatly appreciated. Most of the advice, however, is broad and general so as to not take a "one size fits all" approach. The authors support their advice mostly with statistics mixed with some anecdotal evidence. This sometimes resulted in responses that were maddeningly vague.

Overall, this book was a satisfactory read. The advice was sound and well-reasoned, the authors were optimistic without sticking their heads in the clouds, and, while their responses were general, they didn't make generalizations. I recommend this book, but encourage more "qualified" readers to offer their reviews.

My wife and I purchased this book along with others (e.g. Good News About Sex & Marriage; Life Giving Love). We were very disappointed in the text because the authors clearly have an erroneous understanding of the Church's teaching on marriage, fertility and contraception, Sunday obligation... I refuse to finish the book. Best to save your money and look elsewhere.

Trained as a management accountant with Brooke Bond Oxo Limited, qualifying as a Chartered Management Accountant (FCMA) in 1981. After seven years in industry, joined Croydon College in 1982 as a Senior Lecturer in management accounting and financial management. Studied for MBA at City University Business School in 1987/88. Worked as a full-time author for BPP Publishing Limited for eighteen months from 1990, responsible for writing and technical editing of a range of accountancy and marketing texts and workbooks. Set up own business in 1991 as a freelance lecturer and consultant, specialising in presenting courses in Financial Awareness for a variety of clients, including the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), City University Business School, V & A Museum, Markel International, National Lottery Heritage Fund, ICL Systems Service, Norwich Union, Weetabix Limited and the General Dental Council. Also providing financial planning and marketing consultancy services to small businesses. Great Top-Down Introduction for Non-Accountants, and a Good Place to Begin for Budding Accountants

This book covers both Financial and Management Accounting. It is an excellent introduction to the subject. It provides a great overview of the PURPOSE and USES of P&L Accounts (Income Statements), Balance Sheets, and Cash flow Statements.

It also has great information on how these are constructed.

It is NOT a practical guide to book-keeping. I highly recommend this, both for managers trying to understand financial and managerial accounting, and for students begging accounting.

Once you;ve read this, though, you will probably need to read a book on basic book-keeping to allow you to function as your own accountant, if that's your aim.

Stephen Halliday is an authority on the history of London, with a special interest in the great engineering works that created the modern city. He is the author of The Great Stink: Sir Joseph Bazalgette and the Cleansing of the Victorian Metropolis (Sutton 1999) and Underground to Everywhere; London's Underground Railway in the Life of the Captial (Sutton 2001). A potted history of the London Underground

I previously purchased the same author's Water: A Turbulent History, and was pleased to find one of the same author's books available through Amazon Vine(tm). However, unlike that earlier book, this one only gives a very basic history of the subject. I knew that when I chose the book, but even so I feel that it could have been better.

It works as a basic facts book for people wanting to get a sense of the history of the system, but no more than that. Its small size makes it handy for reading on trains, even those underground trains that were the book's inspiration, though of course you would have difficulty reading it during the rush hour with everybody fighting for space.

There are some amusing stories about smells and mosquitoes, while the tragedies at Moorgate and King's Cross are both covered, though not in any depth. There are pieces about the men who financed and/or managed the system in its early days, though these stories are of necessity incomplete.

A good book in many ways, it is nevertheless something of a tease. I am sure that the author could do better if he were to write a proper in-depth book. But wait - Christian Wolmar has already written that book The Subterranean Railway : How the London Underground Was Built and How It Changed the City Forever so we don't need another such book, at least not yet. If you really want to learn about the history of the London underground, that's the book to go for.

UNDERGROUND, OVERGROUND

From Boston to Beijing, and from Rio de Janeiro to Stockholm via Lisbon and Glasgow, I have travelled on a good many cities' underground railways, and I don't think that I shall ever find one as interesting as the London tube. This little book is a miscellaneous collection of ooh-ah facts, not a systematic study or a work of reference. Such as it is, I thought it well planned and nicely presented, and I imagine it will have a certain amount of new information to impart to anyone who is less than an outright expert.

Stephen Halliday sticks to presenting facts, and he is probably right not to go in for quizzes. For example, which line goes furthest south? You got it in one - the Northern Line. Which line goes furthest from central London? Another no-brainer - the Central Line, or at least it used to before the stretch from Epping to Ongar was closed. There are any number of such little oddities, and happily the author recounts the early suggestion that the operators of the Circle Line, namely the Metropolitan and the District, should operate their services in opposite directions. Suspicions on the part of each that its partner would try to send passengers the long way round if it could get their fares by doing so were, I guess, accurately founded. The book's focus is mainly on the history of the network, including the big names such as Sir Edward Watkin, Frank Pick and the immortal Harry Beck, whose brilliant schematic map, its patent sold for a few £, has served with no more than essential updating as a clear guide to millions of London's visitors ever since. More recent developments are skated over to some extent, notably the scandal of the collapse of the company in charge of maintenance of the infrastructure. I also thought it rather odd that while the East London Line, a shabby poor relation of the Metropolitan, receives reasonable coverage, the splitting off of part of the Metropolitan to form the so-called Hammersmith and City Line is not even mentioned, nor is the North London Line, a déclassé `main' line which nowadays features on all recent tube maps.

There is probably not much point in nitpicking, although I really miss anything about the rural single-track extension from Epping to Ongar, with sylvan-sounding intermediate stops at North Weald and Blake Hall. There is no way of including everything, and Stephen Halliday has had more sense than to try. I like the book, and I'm pleased to add it to my railway collection.

Mind the facts

I thought the title of this book perhaps should have been 'Historical London Underground Facts' because it seems more concerned with the past than the present. Comparing the index with the one in Halliday's previous 2001 book 'Underground to everywhere' it seems this latest title is just a cut down version.

Overall I found it interesting but missing some 'amazing and extraordinary' facts about todays Underground, in particular technical details about power and rolling stock. Whenever I've travelled on the system I'm always intrigued by all the capital initials on the outside and inside of the carriages, the glass fronted control booths in the larger stations (just what do all these people do?) the Oyster card payment system (is it fraud proof?) or something about the platform electronic information signs.

The design of the book is rather bland especially the crudely drawn route maps for the nine lines. There are no photos because the paper is not good enough for reasonable reproduction. All the pages could have looked better with a bit more thought regarding the type and graphics.
