How 47 "unruly Irishmen" humiliated the Union army & navy!

Sabine Pass was a narrow, 6-mile-long defile that channeled the Sabine River, which was the boundary between Texas and Louisiana, into the Gulf of Mexico. Guarding the Sabine River was Fort Griffin, a mud citadel which Union Army Intelligence believed had a force of 200 Confederate troops, including a field artillery battery, two 32-pounders (heavy artillery) and two boats that had been converted into rams. Actually, Fort Griffin was manned by only 46 Irish Texans, officially known as the 1st Texas Heavy Artillery, under the command of 25-year-old Lieut. Richard W. Dowling. It's artillery consisted only of six fieldpieces (the two 32-pounders had been removed weeks earlier). The two rams were ordered scuttled by Dowling near the entrance to Lake Sabine. This meant that any Union ships which did make it past Fort Griffin would run into the trap of the sunken boats, especially since the Sabine was running dangerously low.

The Union plan to take Sabine Pass was developed by Maj. Gens. Nathaniel Banks, Henry Halleck, and William Franklin, as well as Admiral David Farragut. The Union assault force would consist of 5,000 troops in 22 transport vessels protected by four gunboats (with another two gunboats in support). On September 8, 1863, the battle began, and after just 45 minutes, it was all over. One gunboat, "Clifton", was so badly hit by the fort's artillery that it was disabled and abandoned, while another, "Sachem", was forced into shallow water and surrendered to the fort. One humiliated captured Union officer said to Lieut. Dowling,"You and your 46 men in your miserable little fort in the rushes have captured two gunboats, a goodly number of prisoners, many stand of small arms, and plenty of good ammunition, and that is not the worst of your boyish tricks: you have sent three Yankee gunboats, 5,000 troops, and a major-general out to sea in the dark!"

The battle at Sabine Pass had disproved once and for all the myth about the invincibility of Union gunboats. And it gave the Confederacy a much-needed victory after recent disasters at Gettysburg and Vicksburg. In fact, President Jefferson Davis was so impressed by Lieut. Dowling and his men that he commemorated the battle by striking a silver medal in honor of the men. A statue honoring Dowling was later erected near the site of the remarkable fight. This is, at least in my opinion, one of the most fascinating battles of the American Civil War, yet very little has been written about it. Edward T. Cotham has obviously done exhaustive research for this book and his narrative makes for an exciting and very informative book on this extraordinary battle. Highly recommended!

In depth study of an astonishing confederate victory

Author Edward Cotham provides a well-written and interesting account of the civil war at Sabine Pass and the events leading to a decisive battle there in front of Fort Griffin. Although the author spares few superlatives for the victorious Texans' unanticipated and stunning victory he does so for good reason and in an overall balanced manner. The Union officers' failures (as well as successes in other areas) are fairly presented.

This engagement was small but costly for the Union. It set back operations for capturing the important port of Mobile, Alabama as well as delaying operations against the Texas coast.

On the Union side, the roots of the fiasco rested in poor intelligence, coordination, and execution. The first major failure was the arrival of the attack force, when the coordinating blockader was away re-coaling--setting back the attack a critical day and a half. This provided the small garrison the opportunity to bring powder and projectiles to what would have been a defenseless set of gun emplacements.

The well-led and well-drilled garrison occupied a small but well-conceived and constructed earthen fort. It was ideally sited and designed to inflict maximum damage to any naval assault while limiting their ability to counter fire. Attacking gunboats would be forced to approach in tightly constricted channels where they could employ only their forward most guns at a low profile target. Lt. Dick Dowling's handful of men were itching for a fight and well equipped to do so.

The attack was to be a joint operation, with the navy leading the attack in order to allow the army to land. Unfortunately a lack of intelligence about the new fort and unrealistic expectations of the naval vessels' capacity to fight it meant that the gunboats were at a severe disadvantage. Earlier in the war, a small predecessor fort nearby had been easily taken by Crocker, but allowed to fall back under rebel control. This prompted the CSA to build Fort Griffin, and for Crocker to become overconfident.

During the assault everything that could go wrong for the navy did. The lead ship in the east channel suffered an early hit to its boiler scalding the crew and disabling it. Crocker's flagship in the west channel also was disabled by a hit to its rudder chain, then boiler. The other two navy gunboat captains displayed cowardice and fled, not even attempting to assist their disabled comrades. Crocker attempted to fight on, expecting that the army would land as planned and win the victory. U.S. Gen. Wietzel inexplicably decided not to land his force, squandering the painful sacrifice by the navy. The defenders had only 40 charges of powder in the fort at the end of the battle. Then after the battle Wietzel's superior Gen. Franklin retreated to New Orleans rather than carrying out his original instructions to attack elsewhere along the coast if necessary.

350+ Union sailors and infantry serving as sharpshooters were captured when the two disabled ships were surrendered. The little rebel garrison suffered no casualties. The author reasonably suggests that the setting sun would have made gunnery effect hard to distinguish for the union gunners. Texas rejoiced and the CSA enjoyed some increasingly rare good news.

In addition to the pivotal battle, Cotham reviews the initial Union capture of Sabine Pass, the CSA's successful cottonclad attack, operations at Galveston, and Calcasieu Pass. The maps and figures are excellent. My complaints and quibbles are few: I did notice a few confusing descriptions of some of the heavy artillery early in the book such as an 8 inch Columbiad rebored as a 6" rifle (?) and a 12 pdr howitzer described as a 12 inch howitzer. The author perhaps overstates the importance of the blockade running at Sabine Pass since it seems to have only been well suited for very light vessels rather than steam blockade runners. Also, supplies entering this pass would only really have been available to those in the Trans-Mississippi theater. Finally, I believe he fails to sufficiently emphasize the importance of the early delay that granted the defenders time to obtain ammunition.

In spite of the above minor criticisms I highly recommend this book. It is a fascinating read and provides a useful perspective of seacoast warfare in Texas.

Awesome book on a forgotten page of Texas history!

Calling this battle the Texas Thermopylae is not an understatement since the comparisons are very similar. These men were the bravest of brave and deserved land grants as reward in Texas. This should be a required read in schools to teach them to be proud of their heritage. Instead they are brainwashed with concepts the ideas that attempt to make them ashamed of their history and even their race. Texans should be especially proud that the Yankee race was kept at bay for the entire Civil war and Texas was not occupied even at the very end. The battle of Palmetto Ranch fought weeks after the surrender in the East was another proud event where invaders were repelled.

About the Author

Adrian Myers is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Anthropology at Stanford University. For his dissertation research he is running excavations at a Prisoner of War camp that held German Afrika Korps soldiers in a national park in Canada during the Second World War.

 Gabriel Moshenska is a Leverhulme Trust Early Career Research Fellow at UCL Institute of Archaeology. He works on the history of archaeology, public archaeology, and the archaeology and anthropology of Second World War Britain.

About the Author
Deborah Collins Stephens is the co-founder and managing partner of the Center for Innovative Leadership, which consults with leaders and organizations on improving customer service, creating inspired teams, and building the link between employee motivation and customer loyalty. She is the author of six books, three of which have been best sellers: Maslow on Management, One Size Fits One, and Revisiting the Human Side of Enterprise. Stephens lives in Bloomington, Indiana.

Michealene Cristini Risley is an entrepreneur who has created some of the largest deals in the consumer products and entertainment industries. As an executive with twenty-plus years' experience, she launched the first-ever branded maternity license for Adidas. As vice president of licensing and character development for Sega of America, she championed the Sega Girls Task Force. She also produced, directed, and funded a documentary called Flashcards, which garnered status at last year's Cannes Film Festival. Christini Risley lives in Marin County, California.

Jackie Speier served in the California State Legislature for 18 years rising to the Assistant Pro Tem of the State Senate and Chair of Committees on Banking, Finance and Insurance and Government Oversight. Previously Speier served 6 years on the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors. She ran for Lieutenant Governor in 2006 and lost by 3% of the vote. She gained national attention in 1978 as legal counsel to Congressman Leo Ryan accompanying him on an ill-fated trip to Guyana to investigate Jim Jones and the People's Temple. Ryan was killed and Speier shot 5 times. She is featured in the PBS documentary American Experience

Jan Yanehiro has skydived with the Army's Golden Knights and ventured up a frozen waterfall...all in the name of getting a good story! Jan pioneered the magazine format on television as co-host of Evening Magazine, a nightly program in San Francisco from 1976-90. Currently, Jan is the host of Everyday Angels on Comcast Cable TV and the Executive Producer of Pacific Fusion TV. Her latest documentary, Resettlement to Redress, examines the resettlement of Japanese Americans after WWII and the apology from the US government regarding internment. Married and mother of six, Jan has won multiple awards and the Eleanor Roosevelt Humanitarian Award. She holds seats on several boards including the Kristi Yamaguchi Always Dream Foundation and The Bank of Marin.

Reading this Book is like Having Coffee With your Best Friends

This book fairly reeks with positivity. But I mean that in a positive way. This good-hearted book was both inspiring and comforting at the same time. In a way it reminded me of Elly, the character in my favorite comic strip "For Better or For Worse." I just see myself in Elly all the time. In this book, it is the same. You feel the compassionate connectedness of like-minded people just reaching a hand out to you from across the pages of the book. As you see how they handled their difficulties you feel elevated as a fellow human being right along with them. This book is also about the healing power of honesty. It reminds you that the very thing that you might be tempted to hide out of some feeling of shame is the very thing that immediately opens up the hearts of those around you. I'm a board-certified cognitive behavioral therapist who teaches people to re-wire their brains to get out of depression. People mistakenly think they are depressed because of their problems but, in fact, they are always depressed because of their depression. Of course, once depression is taken care of the problems still remain and this book is a huge support for seeing problems in a more positive light. Bravo! A. B. Can't say enough good things about this book!

Destiny threw four women together more than a decade ago who started a monthly Kitchen Table Friends. They created a place every woman needs: where she can say the unsayable about her life and those in it.

These women are successful in their own right, so I'll introduce them here with just a sampling of their many accomplishments:

* Deborah Collins Stephens is an author (3 bestsellers).

* Jackie Speier is a lawyer, California State Senator and Jonestown shooting victim.

* Michealine Cristin Risley is an award-winning documentary producer.

* Jan Yanehiro hosts Appraise It! on HGTV and has won three Emmys.

Reading this list might indicate that these successful women "have it all." Not true. They've been divorced, widowed, left without money or a home, fired, lost elections, etc. etc. Marlene Dietrich famously said, "It is the friends you call at 4 o'clock in the morning that really matter." And that's what these women are for each other.

When they were asked to speak about their Kitchen Table Friends concept to a group of professional women--400 packed the room.

The sections show the 50 ways (subtitle), and have wonderful quotes by women. My favorites are:

1. Gratitude (finding it even in the worst of days, like "at least the ...).

2. Saying "how" instead of "why"--as in "how" can I use this

experience--"how" denoting future, and "why" dwells on the past.

3. Facing your fears. Discouragement has courage at its root--and courage has the French word for heart as its root.

An overused word today, but I thought this book was AWESOME. This is a read-every-word, think-about-it-a-while, call-a-girlfriend-to-talk-about-it book. It is both powerful and meaningful. It is filled with humor, hope, handholding and the humanity only women can show to each other.

Recently I received a book to review where the women called each other the B word (I said no). Women of any age should NOT be doing that to each other!

Dreams are worth pursuing.

I have never read a book of this nature cover to cover. They never hold my attention. They are too sappy, or don't apply to me. After receiving a copy of this book from a friend, I thought the same. I thought, I've read all this before. What are these ladies going to tell me that I don't already know? I've had a tough time. I've scraped myself up off the sidewalk. What could these ladies say? And yet, I couldn't put it down. Each story drew me further in until I was hooked - hooked by the friendship, hooked by the recovery, bravery, and determination. It made me look at the friendships I have differently, realizing who has been there for me - who I can count on, and who I can listen to, and who I shouldn't. It made me reexamine some of my goals, and open up the door to past dreams I thought too childish to pursue. Who knows if anything will come of my dreams, but I'm sure having fun now living a life where my dreams aren't silly, where my thoughts are important, and I am a worth while person. Thank you, ladies. May your lives now stop teaching you such difficult lessons, unless you are thinking of writing a sequel.
