A thrilling Conclusion to a splendid Trilogy!
By M
Brother and sister Amero and Nianki are reunited in this epic tale of the Barbarians.... While one tribe is allied with a bronze dragon and one is allied with perhaps the most exquisitely written green dragon in Dragonlance-dom, Sthenn, a battle takes place that will draw into it race of good and evil... will there be balance? Yes. Will characterization and action be well balanced? Heck yes! This book made me thrill and tears were certainly shed at points of the story. Overall Thompson and Cook prove to me that they can write Krynn well... The female warrior Karada is easily a heroine to rival favorites like Laurana... well done!

Sub-plot characters saves the story from a below average grade.
By Kyle Kritscher
While Amero stood front and center in the previous two novels, the storyline forces him out of the limelight for much of the book. That in itself is not was threatens the pleasure of the read. It is with Amero's absence, we as an audience, also lose the playful banter between Amero and his dragon friend Duranix. My biggest complaint about this book is how the authors handled the chase/duel of Sthenn and Duranix. Sthenn, who in the earlier books exhibited ruthlessness, cunning and an all around miscreant behavior did everything possible to make sure Duranix came out as the victor. When his traps worked, he did not finish his foe off and when he decided he couldn't win a fair fight he didn't do enough to hide and set more traps. It seemed at infinite points in the story a ruthless and cunning Sthenn was provided with many keys and options to victory and he ignored them all.

The true light of this story came in two parts. First, was the inclusion of two characters, Balif and Harak. Typically, I don't elves because they tend to be too dry, too unemotional, and well, altogether too British. However, the elf lord was endearing, comical, but also conspiritorial. His presence did much to give a soul to your stereotypical, carved in marble, straight-laced elf. Harak, while certainly not an elf lord was a fun character as well. The low man on the totem pole in more than one situation worked amazingly well with what he was given, the gift of flattery and knowing his opponent. In the end this overtly charismatic con man may have gained the best prize/position in the book. He was a character who lived and died by his manner to read people and speak well. In a book laced with warfare he never needed to lift a sword, and I liked that.

Secondly, the ending of this book was amazing. It is not the ending that I liked to read or that I would have written myself, but it was powerful and very emotional. In conclusion, the early departure of Amero and the over extended dragon chase were two mighty blows to what could have been a knockout ending to the trilogy. While this book is average, it is the first book that lands the hook in you and wont let go. The main characters of Amero, Nianki, and Duranix are so compelling that wanting to know what will happen to them will carry you through the subsequent books and through their trouble spots to a shocking and poignant ending.

In the 2023 games, former police detective turned paramedic Lara Evans represents Oregon. But the contest’s notorious obstacles and cutthroat rivalry may be the least of her challenges. After saving a government bureaucrat’s life—and literally dodging a bullet—she finds herself in the crosshairs of a relentless hit man. And when another Gauntlet contestant is murdered, a stroke of bad luck puts Lara on the wrong end of damning evidence.

Still, the games must go on. And with the country, the law, and a killer watching her every move, Lara must use all her strength and savvy to beat the odds, claim the prize, and win back her life in the most dangerous game of all.

Possibly LJ Sellers' best book yet
By India Drummond
I got hooked on LJ's books after reading the first Detective Jackson book, but this is possibly her best novel yet.

Former police detective Lara Evans is training to join a national competition called The Guantlet that is part reality show, part boot camp. The year is 2023. She's older and shorter than a lot of the die-hard competetors, and not exactly a favourite to win, but she's a compelling character you can't help but root for, both in the arena and out.

Then just as the contest gets into gear and Lara is carving out her place in the cut-throat media event of the year, a body is dumped at her feet (almost literally), and things take a sinister turn.

It's a fast-paced thriller I didn't want to put down. Sellers uses just the right balance of futuristic high-tech and gritty reality. I hope we see more Evans in the future. This series *must* go on!

Very good futuristic suspense
By S. Warfield
The year is 2023, gas is $8 a gallon, medical insurance is hard to come by, and unemployment is in the double digits. Not much has changed. For Lara Evans, a former police detective and now a paramedic in her home state of Oregon, it is time to leave for Washington, D.C. to compete in The Gauntlet, a set of physical and mental games that are grueling and difficult. The person who wins this competition takes home grant money and jobs are awarded to their state. Lara has trained for a couple of years and is in tip-top condition and wants to win.

Right before the day she leaves, she receives a call to go to a man's house where there is an injury. As she races there and gets out of her car, a man runs from the home, firing a gun at Lara. When Lara goes into the house, she finds a man on the floor with a gunshot wound to his upper arm. At the same time, there is another story line going on concerning a man named Paul Madsen, who has been asked by his boss to set up a personnel replacement database. The two stories will eventually become linked with an astounding conclusion.

Lara is very much a loner and avoids socializing, preferring her apartment and the gym and a quiet life outside of work. Paul Madsen is the same type of person, always alone except for his dog, but the difference is that Paul doesn't want to be alone. Paul isn't handsome, and in order to attract the attention of Camille, a beautiful woman with whom he works, he decides to have a nose job and other cosmetic surgery done. Where he gets the money is at the heart of much of the trouble in the story.

I very much enjoyed this book, and this is the first by L.J. Sellers I've read. I'm interested in reading the rest of her thrillers and mysteries. Recommended for mystery lovers and for readers who like thrillers.

Almost Awesome
By Gregory Lynn
I received a review copy of The Arranger by L. J. Sellers and the bottom line here is that I think the book is almost awesome. I am not a regular reader of thrillers and maybe my expectations weren't in line with genre norms so consider the source.

The story is set in a near future US where the federal government has been radically downsized, unemployment is high, health insurance is rare and a lot of government services, including basic EMT and police services have been cut to the bone. There are elements of dystopian near future sci-fi and while these set a tone and provide some character motivation I think this clearly belongs in the suspense/thriller category.

The heroine is a 42-year old woman named Lara Evans who used to be a police detective but now works as a freelance EMT. She's called to the scene of a shooting where the victim is a high profile government employee who is anxious to avoid a scandal. As it happens, he's in charge of a major national competition that our heroine is going to be involved in and pressures her with his potential to influence the outcome.

Well next thing you know, her roommate at the competition is dead on the floor and our heroine is the only suspect because she's the obvious suspect and the cops don't have the time or resources to do much digging. There's a nice setup there. It works. It feels realistic enough that if we couldn't really imagine it happening in this world it wouldn't take too much of a twist to make it actually possible and from there it's a fairly fast paced action adventure.

I think there are two pretty important weaknesses with the story. The first is characterization and the second is the finish.

The characterization suffered from a lot of telling rather than showing. For example, in the first few pages we have this paragraph:

Lara loved these moments--rushing to a scene, not knowing what chaos she would encounter. In some ways, it was better than being a police officer because she kept on the move and did a lot less paperwork. She missed the authority of the badge though. She'd liked having people pay attention and feel nervous when she approached. It beat the hell out of her current personal life: a forty-two-year-old woman with no partner, no children, no power.

We learn a lot about her in that paragraph but we don't feel any of it. I don't feel like I know her any better because I'm told she doesn't like paperwork. Nobody likes paperwork. If I saw her joking with a former colleague about how he was going to go back and write up a report on someone who got shot while she went out and saved the life of someone who got shot we'd get the same information and I would feel more like I knew the character as a person.

The other issue I had was with the end. It was a bit much. In particular, I thought the end of the competition was a bit contrived.

I feel like I am concentrating a bit too much on the negative here which I don't mean to do. It was entertaining. I read it in one day which I wouldn't have done if it didn't pull me in and carry me along. It was a pretty good story with a couple problems that kept it from being completely freakin' awesome.

    From Booklist
A grisly turn of events galvanizes the Göteborg, Sweden, police force in this fifth entry in Tursten’s crackerjack series featuring Detective Inspector Irene Huss. As the novel opens, a wealthy restaurateur is found shot in the head in his opulent home. His wife, Senna, who discovered the body, arouses suspicion from the start. Detective Huss is certain she’s lying, but why? Soon after, Huss is called to the scene of the double homicide of two gentlemen in exactly the same way that the restauranteur was killed. Turns out, Senna and the victims were principals in an Internet start-up that went boom and then bust. The mystery deepens when the body of a fourth partner, who’s been missing for several years, is found in a nearby lake. Detective Huss has many questions for Senna, who is growing shiftier by the day. Among them: Who is really the father of her infant son? Compelling characters and steady suspense make this a fine Nordic crime novel in the spirit of Henning Mankell and Karin Fossum. --Allison Block

    Review

    Praise for The Golden Calf

"Huss and Persson are empathetic and attractive characters, willing to take the extra step to navigate the case’s Byzantine complexity."
    —Adam Woog, The Seattle Times

"For decades the Swedes have excelled at crime fiction, which is often as gloomy as their long winter nights, filled with philosophical asides on life and politics. Procedure, rather than clues or flights of deductive fancy, are the usual hallmarks of a Scandinavian thriller. You'll find plenty of that in Helen Tursten's finely crafted novels but she also pays homage to the grand old form, down to a bit of old-fashioned alibi busting."
    —Denver Post

"Compelling characters and steady suspense make this a fine Nordic crime novel in the spirit of Henning Mankell and Karin Fossum."
    —Booklist

“Both readers new to the series and avid fans will enjoy investigating this puzzling case with Inspector Huss.”
    —Library Journal

"If you are looking for an additional fix of Nordic crime fiction, I suggest you add Helene Tursten to your list.... The Golden Calf being more than a mystery; it is also, in part, a cautionary tale, one that resonates quietly long after the final paragraph is read."
    —Joe Hartlaub, BookReporter.com

“Huss is a complex character, competent detective, mother of twins, and wife of a celebrated chef. The author painstakingly creates a satisfying police procedural.... It is written simply and translated well, and is recommended.”
    —Midwest Book Review

“Tursten strikes a good balance between ongoing character development and the unfolding of the story.... One of the best entries in a quietly strong series.”
    —Reviewing the Evidence

“The Golden Calf has a plot with more twists and turns than a mountain road high in the Andes, but while you're enjoying a devious storyline, there are always...characters that live and breathe on the page. Whenever I need a bit of a Scandinavian crime fix, it's always a pleasure to turn to Detective Inspector Irene Huss.”
    —Kittling Books

Praise for the Irene Huss series

"As good as Louise Welsh's similarly creepy tour of Glasgow."
    —Entertainment Weekly

"These days Scandinavian crime writers are thick on the ground. It's nice to see that the women can be just as bloodthirsty as the men."
─The New York Times Book Review

    Praise for Night Rounds

"A superior Scandinavian crime novel.... Tursten does an outstanding job of offering multiple plausible murders, making this the rare procedural that actually requires the reader to evaluate alibis, motives, and means to solve the
    case."
    ─Publishers Weekly, STARRED REVIEW

"I couldn't put down this finely crafted, Swedish procedural with its complex story line and heart-stopping climax."
    ─Library Journal

Great story and plot but a flat ending
    By JohnnyApril
This is the first book that I have read by Helene Tursten. I've been interested in reading more books that are considered Scandinavian and Nordic crime fiction.
This is a police procedural book with Irene Huss taking the lead in solving the murders of three men that were shot in their homes in the back of their heads. Much of the plot was digging into their background and questioning someone that seemed to be connected to the three of them, Sanna Kaegler-Ceder.
Much of the investigation lead into a big financial scandal with Sanna's company as well as a Ponzi scheme. The suspence moved further in the book for me when Irene and one of her colleagues went to France to investigate the home of two of the murder victims. Add to the tension a man that was there who was trying to stop their investigation by any means possible.
From the plot and the intersting story, I would give it four stars. I would go for five if I thought the characters were more compelling. To me, they seemed to be going through the motions of an investation. That was the reason the novel had an unexpected and flat ending.
Characters would be more compelling by their actions. Irene Huss was a jiujitsu champion but I didn't see much there. Since the book was from a third person point of view following her thoughts, the conflict with Tommy and his marriage on the rocks seemed forced. Maybe more could have been done with that.
I think if I read these books in order, I would have gotten more out of this book but I still enjoyed reading it. Prose was great and was easy to follow. I'm still going back to read the other books.

    A Force
    By prisrob
My first introduction to Helene Turnsten's was via the Swedish film series of Detective Inspector Irene Huss. These were/are a wonderful series, and portrayed exactly as I would expect of this finely drawn character.

This is the first novel I have read written by Helene Turnsten, and they are as good as any murder/mystery/operational police series I have read. And believe me, I have read them all. I am particularly interested in the Scandanavian series, and have found them most excellent. This is the fifth in the series featuring Detective Inspector Irene Huss, and it is a brilliant one. An extremely wealthy businessman is found murdered in his new glass palace. His young beautiful, blonde wife finds him, and, of course she is the first suspect. DI Huss is right on ths case, working with her varied colleagues. Her boss, Andersson is older, and it seems he will soon be retiring. He is a good 'cop', but time has worn him down. Irene's other colleagues are excellent, and lasting ties are drawn. Irene is especially fond of her colleague, Tommy, and he and his wife are having difficulties. It does not show up in his work, but Irene notices problems. The team is deeply immersed in the murder of the man, when two more men are killed. They seem connected, and are also connected to Sanna, the wife left a widow. She, too, is connected and as the investigation continues, Irene and a colleague go to Paris, where they are both accosted. They are getting to the bottom of thematter, and the investigation quickly accelerates. The complex investigation immerses Detective Inspector Irene Huss and her colleagues into a world of expensive cars, fancy homes and impressive castles in the air. All of this, the police team can handle, and this is one smart group. I am most impressed with Irene Huss, she is the most intelligent and articulate of the group. There are turns and twists and what is discovered is classy and well laid out.

Detective Inspector Irene Huss is a force, an attractive married woman with twin girls. Her professional and personal life seem to be working well. This is a woman to be admired. Helene Tursten is an accomplished writer of this genre, and I look forward to the next novel.

    Highly Recommended. prisrob 02-07-14

Love this writer....Irene Huss just released in English
    By S.I.
GoodReads seems to have book five under The Golden Calf and Gold Digger! No kindle and yet my pre ordered Amazon.com came through to my kindle! Dysfunction on GRs like this is too frequent. Any way to address these issues?

The book....written in 2004 and only translated 2013! Night Rounds was 1999/2012! The first three books of the Irene Huss series and the TV films are IMHO fantastic. My research shows she has at least six more to be translated.

I thoroughly enjoy reading this writer. She writes so very well that once I get started I really just want to stay within the world of the book! I enjoy Irene and her family, colleagues and the various characters of each story. They all come together and take shape well. The story was good but not exciting as the first three were. Same as with Night Rounds I am curious why these have been released in this order. Night Rounds was really book 2 but released after the first three, this then is book 5!

I am concerned that the writer seems to have chosen to write Irene Huss in REAL TIME so she is now 42 and so many of the earlier components of her life in the early books are changing already IMO too quickly. Worried, because I enjoy reading these books and curious how she will address this or if she will.

A good read but not exceptional. Wish I could rate enjoyment of reading and content of story in two separate ways and it would be four and three!

    A Wonderful Piece of Wizardry
    By M.McC
The Book of Merlyn was an incredible book, once again proving the genius of T.H. White. This book is the only sensible conclusion to the Once and Future King and should have been included in the original printing. In The Book of Merlyn, we revisit King Arthur on the night before his final battle with his son, Mordred. Feeling dejected and alone, Arthur's mentor, the lovably eccentric and ingenious Merlyn, returns and whisks the king away to learn two final lessons from the animals he knew as a child. This book is not merely a childish fairytale, but rather an in-depth dissection of human nature in which the human condition is explored in depth and the ever-elusive meaning of life is hinted at. A book for the serious reader or any serious fan of Arthur and Merlyn, The Book of Merlyn is a masterpiece from the mind of one of the greatest writers of the past one hundred years.

    from story to archetypal myth
    By R.B.
If you like the Once and Future King as an amuzing story, then watch out, this book is not for you. Here White elevates his discussions to probe humanity's own lack of humanity. Having witnessed the horrors of World War II, White brilliantly exploits the Arthurian legend to analyze and discuss humans: are we as grand as we think we are? Is there hope? Are King Arthur's efforts (or, archetypally, the efforts of any human who is engaged in helping out the human race) fruitful or simply futile?
This is a humanistic work that dares to challenge the assumptions of humanism. Merlyn uses strong polemic to not only argue that humans are bad for nature (this is an incomplete understanding of the text) but that we have less "humanity" than vrtually all other animals. This view seems to be in direct conflict to Arthur's wish to salvage humanity. Yet Merlyn does not see it as a fatalistic view, he very much still shows hope.
The Book of Merlyn is a top-down, ideological examination of humanism enveloped in the archetypal Arthurian myth. It is not a bed-time story. It is not about lovely castles and romantic imagery.
    It is about humanity.

    A startling conclusion.
    By A Customer
The marvelous 5th book of T. H. White's incredible Arthurian saga. This one, in it's complete lack of swordplay and thrill, is set apart from the preceeding four.

Ok, the first four--definately the Story is the major priority. Focal characters: Arthur, then after "The Sword in the Stone" the focus shifts to Lancelot and the queen, and to a lesser extent the Orkneys, etc. In the final chapter the reader is brought back to Arthur, whose musings on the nature of Man and War also smears our noses in these two essential elements, whose dissection was an important objective in the story for White.

Yeah, yeah, anyone who's read the book knows that. But what about the "Book of Merlyn"?

Well, picture drawing aside the glitter and pizzaz of the storyline that has won over so many people to focus on that teaming world of philosophy and abstract thought that Merlin had shown Arthur as a young king. Take "The Sword in the Stone", a primarily whimsical book in which I believe White first lay the groundwork for the "Book of Merlyn", return an aged, experienced and almost broken Arthur to this sort of setting, and...tada! bring back Merlin and the animals(or rather bring Arthur back to them). There now follows that dissection of War and Man we were talking about.

Yup, the whole book is essentially White's essay on these two subjects, given in a long philisophical discussion between the animals, Merlin, and an older Arthur in the comfort of the Badger's underground burrow(Nimue's cave, ha ha!).

Now for those who are thinking ,"Ye gods, the horror!", I gotta admit, in part, you're right. If you're thinking of reading this as the conclusion to "The Once and Future King" in a steady, smooth stream, you're in for a bumpy ride. Think about it, the book was published posthumously--there are structural problems and stuff(why I rate it 8 and not higher), the most blatant of which is the episodes as the ant and the goose from "The Sword in the Stone" properly belonged here originally, so you bump over that.

    Bump.

Next, like I said, Story has taken a decided back seat to Essay. That's a bump for those who loved "The Once and Future King" for the laughter and the tears, a...MAJOR...bump.

    BUMP.

But for those who can accept Story's new position in the scheme of things, you'll really dig this. Because White returns to someone he has really neglected in favor of Lancelot and Jenny and all that other stuff--Arthur. Arthur's back and he's gonna get a little attention, undergo a little developement. This is a must for you people. There is also now this beautiful circle to White's saga. And, getting down to the dirt, you are gonna love that Essay I was talking about.

It...is...BRILLIANT. For those who like this sort of thing, you will LOVE it, and for those who don't like this kind of stuff normally, you'll LOVE it anyway because of the original way White did it.

People who dug the "Tao of Pooh", you will LOVE this.

Kids doing an assignment on the underlying symbolism and whatnot of the "Once and Future King", you will LOVE this--it'll be so much help, it's almost cheating.

And. Finally. T.H. White fans everywhere. Read "The Book of Merlyn". In the end, this is what he's all about.

Talk to the Hand: A Doonesbury Book, by G. B. Trudeau

[Trudeau ranks as] one of the foremost sociopolitical satirists of recent decades."

While some in the Doonesbury universe seek office, others serve. Alex and her Seattle co-hordes devote their young, restless, and body-pierced Deaniac energy to hooking up "flash art" with politics. Half a world away in Iraq, a major bad boy from stateside devotes himself to liberating the city of Al Amok, ruling with a steady hand, a full glass, a devoted Chinese handler, and an economy based on looting. As fate would have it, B.D. finds himself heading upriver on an apocalyptic mission to terminate Al Duke with extreme prejudice, a story line so made-for-TV that B.D. feels compelled to bang out the screenplay on his laptop in real time. Fortunately for the man known to Honey as "sir," the media red-lights the hit, though car bombers quickly pick up the option and put the project back in play.

In the homeland, a wartime president has the answer to almost all the questions ("9-11") but tries to shelve the still incomplete story of his own National Guard duty back in the daze. Mark and Zonk join the war against trash politics by offering a $10,000 reward for any witness who can collaborate the flightsuit-in-chief's account, but their efforts, alas, come to naught. Yes, it's a divided nation. On the west coast sexual assault charges accompany a rise to power, while back east they mandate a fall: Walden College's acting coach, Boopstein, lets accusations of way-personal fouls force her football team off the field. Sex parties for recruits? "Who knew we were that competitive?" marvels President King, ending Boopsie's gridiron apprenticeship with two little words: "You're fired."

    Great Work Mr. Trudeau!

Doonesbury is a mainstay in my life. Just recently have I become a fan and just recently have I picked up almost all the books in order to keep myself up to date.

The political satire involving several major characters over so many years IN REAL TIME is really something to tip your hat to.

This book in particular deals with Arnold's reign of governatorship and the farciful laughs behind his groping of women beforehand, hence his Doonesbury Name "Herr Gropenfuhrer." He is shown as a large groping hand instead of the muscle-bound oldie-but-goodie we all know and love him to be.

More than anything else, this piece chronicles mainstay B.D.'s final days in Iraq as a militaryman. His last helmet is taken off by EMT's who nurse him after a shell-blast has taken off his leg. Stirring stuff and easily my favorite Doonesbury saga.

"...in some small, meaningless way,I'll miss having you around."

Another great Doonesbury production! Trudeau continues to keep up imaginative satire on the American scene.Whether you lean to the left or to the right; you just gotta admit Trudeau is a master of satire. Who but Trudeau would think of representing muscle man Schwartzenegger as "The Hand",and then to really drive the satire in a bit more--call him "Herr Gropenfuhrer"?

Then there's President Bush with his Roman -style War Helmut.Anyone can associate a Cowboy Hat with Bush ;but it takes Trudeau's genius to come up with this helmut.

My one regret about this period is that we didn't get a character of John Dean.Maybe he was just too much for Trudeau to handle without going "TILT".

This seemed to be the period of losses all the way around.Walden loses its Football team and coach,it's very raison d'entre,Zonker loses his chance to run for Governor of California,B.D loses a leg , Duke almost loses Honey to an Iraqi and on top of it all; too many good soldiers lose their lives in Iraq. And we call this a Comic Strip. I have been following the strips since I was a kid. I cut my teeth on Dick Tracey and Pogo . I still follow Tracey, but sadly we have lost the satire of Pogo and the swamp. Life was a lot simpler in those days. One thing was ,we knew who the enemy was; "it was us." in Pogo .In Tracey, it was Mumbles,Flattop,Pruneface or their ilk; and we could trust Tess,Junior, Gravel Gertie and the Police Chief.

I still have a positive criticism on the Doonesbury books, though. It is a shame that the strips are not all in color. They were all colored in my newspaper .The artwork is an

important and extremely good element of this strip and reading it in black and white is like looking at a sunset without its color.Even the sillouettes!

Anyway, fans of Doonesbury will love this book.
