An eye-opener on how family shapes history

If you think you know how the West was won (or lost, as your perspective prescribes), I encourage you to sit down with this book, which is essentially an exposé of relationship dynamics in the colonial Southwest. Although the cultures, allegiances, and motivations of colonizers varied regionally across the West, the transformational effect on both aboriginal and colonial kinship systems was largely the same. The relationship models brought forth in this volume's essays, then, aptly serve as metaphors for the West as a whole.
The history of cultural transformation lies not in the grand movements of armies and borders, nor in the political and religious tides that wash over an area, but rather in the textures of marriages, adoptions, and labor relations. Whether motivated by greed or necessity, affection or disdain, people find ways around established systems and mores, and in doing so script a history that oftentimes renders alien the conventional historical accounts. On the Borders of Love and Power is one such people's history.
From the myth of Kit Carson to the Southwest's own brand of slavery, from the many shades of assimilation to motley human amalgamations struggling to find identity as families, I find this book to be as thrilling as fiction, and more sentient and revealing than any cultural history I have read.
