An enjoyable, quick read

To judge by the above reviews, I enjoyed this book a lot more than other people have. I thought that the character of Vheod was initially intriguing and while the author doesn't fully explore his past or how he interacts with others, I think that overall "The Glass Prison" was a fun read. I do agree that Whitlock and Melann's attitudes get annoying after a while, especially considering the lengths Vheod goes to in able to help them. However, the book resolves nicely with a little action (and a little romance) and I'm looking forward to the next book.

Not bad at all...

This was my first AD&D book, even though I play a lot. I thought the book was actually quite good.. I don't have many bad comments about the book... The characters were very solid, as was the plot... Monte Cook is a good writer for an excellent campaign in an even cooler universe.

Great new hero, good description

This was one of the first books in the FG setting that I have read. I found Cook's description of the Abyss and the realms of the ravenwitch to be particularly intriguing and well written. For me, the descriptions alone made the book worth reading. Cook's cambion hero was also well developed and believable.
The budding romance between he and the cleric could have been a bit better developed.
Overall a great read.

About the Author
Dr. Paul Goransson has over 28 years of experience in the data communications field. He was the founder and President of Meetinghouse, which developed network access security software products for wireless and wired environments. Meetinghouse was acquired by Cisco Systems in 2006, where Paul currently serves as a Director of Engineering in the Wireless Networking Business Unit. He is also the owner/operator of Bondgarden Farm, a commercial beef and hay farm in southern Maine. Paul previously founded Qosnetics and QARobotics, which were later merged and subsequently acquired by Hewlett-Packard in 1999. Dr. Goransson has published technical articles in the fields of bandwidth reservation and wireless security. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Brandeis University in 1975, his Masters of Science in Computer Engineering from Boston University in 1981, and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of New Hampshire in 1994. Dr. Goransson has previously served as an adjunct Professor at the School of Computing at Armstrong Atlantic State University.

Dr. Raymond Greenlaw is the Founder and Dean of the School of Computing and Professor of Computer Science at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Georgia. Ray is the Distinguished Professor of Computer Science at Chiang Mai University in Thailand and a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the College of Management and Technology in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He is the author of 13 books in the field of computer science. His books cover complexity theory, graph theory, the Internet, networking, operating systems, parallel computing, the theory of computation, and the World Wide Web. Dr. Greenlaw has published 60 research papers and given over 155 invited lectures throughout the world. As a PI or co-PI, Ray has been awarded over $6,000,000 in grants and contracts, and his research has been supported by the following countries: Germany, Hong Kong, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, and the United States. He has won numerous international awards including three Senior Fulbright Fellowships, a Humboldt Fellowship, a Japanese Society for Promotion of Science Fellowship, two visiting Professor Fellowships from Italy, a Sasakawa Fellowship for Japanese Studios, and a Spanish Fellowship for Science and Technology. Dr. Greenlaw served as the Regional Coordinator for the State of Georgia’s $100,000,000 Yamacraw Project, which was designed to make the state of Georgia a leader in the telecommunications field. Ray serves as a Commissioner for the Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC) of the Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology (ABET). He received a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Pomona College in 1983, a Master of Science in Computer Science from the University of Washington in 1986, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Washington in 1988.

A little dated (2007), but it explains MANY facts regarding roaming that most people never think of.
The first 80 pages are background material that you will already know if you have studied for the CWNP certifications. But if you haven't, it's necessary material.
There are very few sources that get into the politics of Wi-Fi, but this one does. It also has a good description of how Supplicant's actually fit into the mix, and why there is more than one. The historical details really help me explain the technology.
The connection between 802.11r and 802.11k is also discussed.
Well worth the discounted price I found on Amazon.

The world of show dogs-and their handlers, judges, breeders and owners-provides the principle background in this competent, somewhat drawn-out debut. Melanie Travis, 30, a teacher in Stamford, Conn., and the divorced mother of four-year-old Davey, doesn't own a dog, although her aunt Peg and uncle Max breed standard poodles. One morning Max is found dead of a heart attack on the kennel floor; after the funeral, Peg asks Melanie to find Beau, the kennel's star stud dog that has been missing since the night Max died. Melanie, whose summer job has fallen through, agrees but doesn't necessarily agree with Peg that someone else must have been in the kennel that night. Setting out on the dog-show circuit, ostensibly seeking a world-class mate for her poodle, Melanie meets assorted handlers and breeders, a respected judge and an attractive hunk named Sam Driver who had tried very hard to buy Beau from Max. In fairly predictable girl-sleuth tradition, Melanie also encounters murder and the possibility of romance. A bonanza for ardent dog fanciers and for others, a likable heroine in a smoothly paced romantic mystery.

This first-of-a-series from Berenson (Deep Cover, Zebra, 1994) also focuses on the world of show dogs but highlights a child as well. Teacher Melanie Travis, with her delightfully rambunctious four-year-old in tow, helps her poodle-breeding aunt track down the prize stud animal that disappeared the night her husband died. Berenson, who avoids most of the technicalities of dog judging, centers instead on the suspect personalities involved: a moody, dog-hating neighbor; an unctious, ambitious dog handler; and a handsome rival poodle-owner. Naturally flowing prose, extended suspense, and an infectiously upbeat single mother as protagonist make this a special treat.

Great start to a fun mystery series

I don't know anything about dog breeding, aside from what video snatches of dog shows I happen to catch on Animal Planet as I'm flipping channels. I don't even own a dog (apartment rules, sigh), so when I picked up A Pedigree to Die For I had hoped for at least enough coherent explanations of the breeding and show process to help me understand what was happening in the story without detracting too much from the mystery.
I'm happy to say Laurien Berenson, in this debut installment of Melanie Travis mysteries, does a great job of balancing suspense and milieu, about as well as Melanie herself balances single motherhood and sleuthing. It helps here that Melanie, the niece of a champion Standard Poodle breeder, knows little about dog breeding as well, and we learn with her.
Of course, while we're learning the difference between a Standard and a Toy Poodle, Melanie is changing hats at breakneck speed -- from mother to aggravated sister to compliant niece to sleuth to summer school teacher and back again. When a prized stud Poodle from Melanie's aunt's kennel is "dognapped", Aunt Peg convinces Melanie to go undercover and scour the dog breeding community for clues and paw prints.
A Pedigree to Die For is a fun, "cozy" read, where the mystery lies in the chase and not in gruesome killings. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more about Melanie going to the dogs in the future.

Dying to Find a Stud!

Being a fan of the Dog Lover's Mystery series by Susan Conant, I decided to try the first book in the Melanie Travis mystery series by Laurien Berenson. While the two series are quite a bit different in style (Conant's books are more cerebral and the mysteries more complex), both contain interesting characters and lots of information about dogs.
In this book, we meet Melanie, a single mother strapped for cash who agrees to help her Aunt Peg find a missing champion poodle stud, Beau. Her uncle was found dead of an apparent heart attack in the kennel area, and when he was found, Beau was gone. Being suspicious, Melanie's aunt is convinced that someone took the dog to use as a stud dog, and Melanie goes undercover at several dog shows to get information on the dog's whereabouts. Meeting an attractive exhibitor with a strong motive for stealing the dog, Melanie must stay focused on her task and when another death occurs, she steps up the investigation to find both a killer and the missing dog.
I enjoyed this first book for the plot (there were several twists and turns I never saw coming) and for the background information. Having only read this first book, I was expecting that Melanie would somehow actually get involved with showing dogs, and when that did not happen I was a bit disappointed. I was also disappointed that her wealthy Aunt Peg did not offer to pay her for the time spent looking for her missing dog since it is hardly a secret that Melanie is a struggling single mother. Other than these minor complaints, I enjoyed this book and look forward to more doggie adventures with Melanie. Enjoy!

I warmed up to this book

I checked this book out of the local branch library. When I first started reading it, I was lukewarm about it and thinking I would return it (I don't feel I have to finish something I am reading for fun if it isn't fun!). One night, I decided to give it a second chance. I ended up really enjoying it once I got past the first chapter. Now I am hunting down the rest of the series.
Melanie's husband left her when her son was 10 months old. She's been supporting herself and her son ever since. She's wary of men (her most recent lover just took off to Las Vegas and married a show girl), short on money, trying to be a good mom to her son, and doesn't get along with her relatives. In this book, her Uncle Max dies and his favorite stud dog is stolen. Melanie's forceful Aunt Peg convinces her to help her find the missing stud dog (actually, she wanted Melanie's feckless brother to do it but he declines). Along the way, Melanie learns about showing dogs, how her parents really died, and draws slightly closer to her remaining relatives. And her Aunt Peg fixes her up with a "stud"--a Mel Gibson look-alike.
I read some of the reviews of her other books and one reviewer complained because Melanie's son is dragged into the story and he whines alot. Don't listen to that reviewer unless you hate kids. Yes, Melanie's son is in all of the books in the series. She's a single mother! Of course he's going to be mentioned a lot. I have a son who is older now but Ms. Berenson is aptly descriptive of parenthood--the good and the bad.
I really like the way the series develops. I enjoy the characters of her Aunt Peg, her Aunt Rose, and her feckless brother Frank. As the series continues, more of the personality of these relatives is developed. It's like having your own less than perfect relatives drop in to cause problems.
Lastly, I'm a cat person, not a dog person. However, I have noticed the dog based mysteries are better than the cat based ones. The characters in Lillian Jackson Braun's "cat who" series are so shallow compared to Ms. Berenson's characters.

A brief, conventional history of Big Bend National Park

Roderick Nash called for a history of each of our national parks. That provides the justification for Jameson's brief book, which neatly checks this important but underappreciated park off the Nash list.

Jameson hits the issues you want in a park history, from park creation to contemporary management. He doesn't manage to come up with a compelling overall narrative, nor does he place this park in a wider temporal, intellectual, or political context. If you're interested in Big Bend NP, and especially if you're visiting and want some background, this book will serve you well.

Good for beginners!

This short ebook is really more of an article. It does a very thorough job of describing the basics of email, etc. For those of us who already know the basics, there unfortunately isn't really anything new offered. I only recommend buying this if you, or whomever you are buying it for are a total newbie.

Very Complete

This is a great reference of all the current papers on lab animal anesthesia. It's very complete. The citation list in the back of each chapter is worth the price of the book. It's well written and I feel the citations are well represented in the book.

It's fairly dense for a straight read through (e.g. for studying for boards), but a great reference when you need it.
