great resource for info on cold-hardy succulants

Just finished reading this and was very impressed. Mr. Chance provides info I've never found anywhere else and does it with a sense of humor. I'm very pleased with my purchase & look forward to locating, obtaining, and growing many of the plants listed in this book. My only critique is I wish there were pictures for every plant listed/described, and I wish all of the pictures stated which plants are shown in the pictures. Overall, the best book I've seen on cold-hardy succulants.

An Aesthetic and Useful Reference

The book includes fine photographs of common and rare Genus and species of cold hardy desert plants. It is rife with well codified details of propagation from seed and cuttings, of growth media and transplanting, and maintaining cacti and succulents in tough desert climates with extremes in heat and cold. Sources of common and rare species are included. If you want to groom a cactus garden with success through rugged winters, you will greatly appreciate this book.

Leo Chance has created an outstanding cactus book

A truly amazing compilation of cold hardy cacti and succulants. I was bitten by the cold hardy cactus bug 5 years ago and this is the best book I have yet seen on the subject. Worth every penny. Living in Michigan, I only took exception to his recommendation for 2 inches of gravel mulch for a wet climate (I find that half an inch allows my sandy soil to dry faster) but that was it. The photos are excellent, the breadth of species is inspiring, particularly some of the South American cacti, and the culture requirements are very informative. I can confidently say that anyone interested in growing cacti in a cold climate will not be disappointed in this book.

About the Author
Judith Hawkins-Tillirson's life has centered on the arcane arts for the past 40 years. A student of tarot and Qabalah, she was also a professional astrologer. She has been a member of a Traditional European Witchcraft Coven since the late 1970s and has kept a magical herb garden for several decades. Judith now practices her herbal craft in Northwest Georgia with her husband and seven cats.

James Wasserman is a lifelong student of religion and spiritual development. Born in 1948, he attended Antioch College and then traveled for some years in search of teachers of the Mystery Traditions. In 1973, he began working at Samuel Weiser's Books, then the world's largest esoteric bookstore and publisher. In 1976, he joined Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.), having explored Aleister Crowley's system of Scientific Illuminism. In 1979, he founded TAHUTI Lodge, now the second oldest continuous O.T.O. Lodge in the world. He has played a key role in numerous seminal publications of the Crowley corpus, and has added his own contributions to that literature. His numerous books focus on spirituality, religion, creative mythology, history, secret societies, and politics. He is a passionate advocate of individual liberty. A book designer and producer by trade, he is married with two children.

Nancy Wasserman is an experienced and dedicated occultist who has been practicing the magical system of Aleister Crowley for many years. She has contributed several articles to the O.T.O. publications as well as The Pathworking of Aleister Crowley. She lives in New York City with her husband and editor, James Wasserman.

Both immensely erudite and funny as hell

Two things immediately leap to mind on reading this book:

1) Judith has read _777_ so *you don't have to*. The importance of this cannot be overstated.
2) Do not, under any circumstances, skip the footnotes. They're hilarious. Yes, *really*.

In a book this short, what you get is necessarily a whirlwind tour, but it's a well-focused whirlwind. Highly recommended, and a delightful read. Not many works both instruct and entertain as well as this book does.

Herbal Magick by Judith Hawkins-Tillerson

This book was full of surprises. It is so wonderfully written that I am going to let some quotes from the book do the telling. It is very unusual to find a book that presents tons of useful information that doesn't read like an encyclopedia; the author's wonderful use of the English language instead makes it read more like poetry! Here's a typical paragraph: 'We find that the entire Corpus Hermeticum is late anitquity's densely saturated, intellectually sophisticated, and magically erudite Neoplatonic stew. As it happens, this savor and complex broth was, at the outset, a 'stone soup', to which many profound and recondite thinkers added a turnip here, an onion there, a handful of parsley, simmer 600 years or so and bing!' Nothing more to add, except Thank You Judith Hawkins-Tillerson.

A disappointment

A deeply disappointing book that is for the most part worthless. The core text is less than 200 pages of fairly large print, padded out with a glossary that defines such terms as "derivative", "equity" and "exchange". Except for the first chapter the book is an introduction to software and product management with little or no mention of its applications to financial operations. There is no mention of ATSs, ECNs, automated trading, let alone direct market access or algorithmic trading. Even basic topics such as straight-through processing are only talked about in the most cursory of fashion. I could not recommend this book to anyone.

Indiana eat your heart out!

Artus Cimber is the classic do gooder, followed by trusted friends who meet tragic ends. His supposed guardian is turned against him and all seems lost until he finds the ring of winter. Hello! this is the best relic i have read about in awhile. When all this was said and done I applaud Mr Lauder on a job well done. And for the guy who wrote about Kelemvor Lyonsbane... well this is Artus Cimber's story and we don't need a flash back to the God of the Dead all right. Now that Artus has the ring he is a god. metalcam says great book and read it with an open mind not closed.

Jim Lowder is one of the best authors TSR has ever had. This is a good book, Artus is a cool character. The Ring is a great artifact, and while Chult may not be favorite setting I still enjoyed this book. Check it out.

Abeir-Toril has got to be the most comprehensive world in fantasy. Sadly, few writers dare to venture beyond Cormyr, Waterdeep, and the Underdark and explore what this fantastic realm. The Jungles of Chult has got to be one of the most obscure places in all the realms. Hardly the setting for an epic fantasy adventure...or is it?

James Lowder has single handedly created one of the best pieces of literature WOC has to offer. The Ring of Winter boasts everything necessary for a successful speculative fiction novel: likeable characters, an engaging plot line, sensous details, and even talking dinosaurs.

A bit disappointing

This is a fairly complete handbook about video signals: here you will find quite everything about analog and digital video, cables and connection standards.

From the first chapter, however, the written text disappoints the reader: it is a list of technical data, without any further explanation or with a poor one. This book is a sort of "data sheet compilation", and it is a very good one. But it is not a book about digital and analog video.

From this book you will not learn how and why PAL and NTSC have been designed and you will not be introduced into color theory in an effective way. You will learn how many pixels PAL and NTSC are made of at every possible resolution, and when you will read the same sentence for the 30th time, you will ask yourself why the book was not simply condensed in a list of tables and graphics. That way it could have been a must have.

In brief: an interesting and complete but pointlessy verbose reference.

A handbook for the digital engineer

I have the second edition in print and the third in PDF as well as the fifth in print. Some of the other reviews of this book bash the fact that it isn't for hobbiests or those less technical but take a look at the full title, it IS intended for digital design engineers. The 2nd book is about 700 pages with about 100 more of appendix, the 3rd is about the same but the appendix have been encorporated into chapters. Both include the same CD of test images. The 5th edition is actually thinner by 1/4" and perhaps heavier with about 900 pages. It lacks the CD of images even though the same images are used throughout the book. If you really want the images you can probably find them somewhere. Additional subjects include MPEG4, digital TV standards and more coding formats. It saves you the time of finding and paying for the individual standards. It doesn't cover DVD or BlueRay standards and still includes NTSC / PAL / SECAM. It doesn't cover DisplayPort but that is still an unproven in the market standard. Does it cover absolutely everything, no, it can't it would be too big. It is my number one goto reference for video information though since everything I need is in there and then some (which is nice to have on hand anyway).

I think this book will become a recognized textbook
for Colleges and High Schools. Because of the rare
access that Richard had to Top Secret Russian arcives, information is presented that has never been relesased before. He did research for this
book for over 15 years with help from Russian professor of economics at St. Petersburg, Nikita Lomagin, The book's many documents and illustrations reveal many coflicts involving the
NKVD and the Communist party. It reveals the huge
suffering and death of of the blockaded Leningraders. He found that over 2000 people were
arrested for cannibalism. He found that more Russians died in the blockade of Lenningrad then
have died in all of America's wars from 1776 through Afganistan.
