The best fantasy horror book I've read... really!

I have only read a couple other fantasy horror books but NOTHING like this one. I would have to say that this is a start of a new bookcase for me. If your interested in anything related to D&D, magic, or death (lol) you will absolutely love the Ravenloft series. The story is fantastic, it never slows down. It is seamless and easy to follow. I felt like I acctually knew the charicters by the end of the book(thats how good the charicter development is!). And the way Lowder(the writer) describes all of the spells and the way everyone looks and sometimes just the absolute terror written on someones face... oh man you feel like you're there! well this is a fantastic book with many others before and after it. (if your trying to read the whole serise in order good luck!) I greatly recomend this book to ALL people who are interested in this topic.

Lord Soth as only he could be...

Knight of the Black Rose follows one of Dragonlace's best known villians as he finds himself int he Ravenloft world trying to get out. Those of you familiar with the Dragonlance Chronicles will undoubtedly know the name of Lord Soth the Death Knight. The scene stealer of the Chronicles books.

In this book, Soth has been given a new voice by James Lowder. Lowder proves that he has a knack for darkf antasy with his first Ravenloft novel. Lowder proves he is the perfect writer to write this dark fantasy novel.

There is nothing cliche about this book, in fact it breaks the rules of good vs evil. After all, there is no 'good' guys in the Ravenloft world. There is the bad guys, the the worse guys. It's a very interesting take on the fantasy genre.

Lowder has proved over the past couple years that he is a voice to be listened too. I believe right now he is one of the best kept secrets to the writing world. Once his name gets out his popularity will surely explode. Treat yourself to agripping tale and read this book.

Soth at his best

Many people complain that Lowder can't write. He can. Many complain Lowder doesn't use the English language well in his writings. He does. James Lowder's books are very deep. I'm guessing most people who didn't like this book either (1) didn't like it because it wasn't "their kind of book" or (2) Didn't actually understand what was going on, through faults of their own.
Strahd is not a "wussy" as one reader commented, but rather, someone who wants to stay back and watch. He does not want an open confrontation with Soth, as he did not (intially) want an open confrontation with Azalin...

In an era when reasonable people seriously discuss the deeper meanings and representations of The Brady Bunch and Gilligan's Island, it should come as no surprise that someone has written a book discussing Star Trek as the source of all useful knowledge. The surprise would doubtless be if no one found any meaning inherent in a given 1960s or 1970s TV series. This slim volume resembles others in the pop-culture-as-guide-to-life subgenre. Its raw material is a little richer than usual, since both Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation are laden with intentionally meaningful bits as well as the unintentionally meaningful nuggets this kind of book so often unearths: for instance, as Marinaccio points out, in any ST group shot, the array of the characters' national and planetary origins bespeaks A Deeper Meaning. Ultimately, Marinaccio's effort is neither a typical Trekkie book nor a typical collection of inspirational bromides and insights; still, it functions as both. Words of Wisdom from TV? Amazing!

This is a fun little book chock full of wise sayings gleaned from episodes of the original Star Trek. The original was not a space opera, it was a futurized series of life's lessons, very carefully crafted. Each episode had a heavy-duty message embedded within--and not very hard to spot either. This book does not necessarily include these thematic messages, but it does excerpt a number of pithy, humorous quotes from the characters. It is highly reminiscent of a poster my dentist has in his office of Everything I Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. I expect there is also a book with that name, but I haven't read it. These words of wisdom also remind me of Dr. Akin's famous "Laws of Spacecraft Design" which you can access on the internet. With his permission, I used several in my book "The Knowledge Management and Information Technology Encyclopedia" (published by the Government and not for sale). My favorite submits from Marinaccio's delightful book are:

Gossip is often confused with conversation. In fact it often takes the place of conversation. Take gossip away from some folks and they would turn into mimes. p.61

An amusing little book...

Okay, I confess: I was amused by this book, and since I suspect that that was most of its intention, perhaps I'm being too harsh in giving it only two stars. And yes, there were some legitimately thought-provoking ideas to be found...but only a few. If you can find this book used, cheap, as I did, it's definitely worthwhile for a lark. But there is DEFINITELY NOT enough book here to be worth list price. It is grossly overpriced to capitalize on the Star Trek market, and that's the source of my dissatisfaction.

as the tittle says, i cant really say anything that the other reviewers haven't said themselves.
all i can say is that at first i was expecting it to be kind of corny, like if you encounter an alien energy life form set your phaser to heat to destroy it or if you encounter a giant rock thing use cement to heal its wounds.
but it wasn't anything like that, it was good, very entertaining thoughts and ideas about the lessons learned from star trek and how they are related to the authors real life.

defiantly a must read for any star trek fan.

Dense But Worth The Effort

The Weiser Concise Guide to Alchemy by Brian Cotnoir is exactly as the titles says - concise. The beauty is that it is direct and to the point. Its downfall simple - for someone without any background in general Hermeticism the lack of elaboration on some points can be difficult. However, this lack of extensive theory is also what makes the Concise Guide useful for those seeking practical experiments. There are experiments that are to be done, ideas to be contemplated, and new things to learn. While at times it reads like a cook book, it is important to remember that alchemy is an operative art and science. This is not a "touchy feely" book, it is a book designed to give operative laboratory instruction as related to the Great Work, and that it does. A great reference

When I first heard that someone had written a concise guild to alchemy, I was very skeptical. I have read, and worked with, a few practical texts previously, and I simply did not think that a concise guide would be much use to me. I was wrong. I honestly return to book again and again to reference one point or another. I would not throw away the classic works of Frater Albertus or Manfred Junius, but I honestly recommend this guide to others. There are a number of matters from the classical works that I just did not really understand until I read this book. There is also some information that I simply have not encountered elsewhere. I have to agree with Mark Stavish, this is not the end all be all of alchemical works. It delivers what it promises, and I am glad I bought it.

Quite Enjoyable

I enjoyed reading this book. I'm a big music fan and thought I knew most of the stories about most of the bands and artists - but I learned a lot! Several of the myths - and stories behind the myths - were new to me and really interesting ("Love Rollercoaster" by the Ohio Players to name one). A good read - perfect for your airport or airplane reading, especially!

If you're a long-time rock fan, you've probably heard or read about all those far-out, wild, hairy and downright unbelievable stories of rock stars behaving badly. Gary Graff and Daniel Durchholz compiled, examined and evaluated over 60 of those tales, the result being ROCK 'N' ROLL MYTHS, a breezy, somewhat tongue-in-cheek guide that proclaims it has THE TRUE STORIES BEHIND THE MOST INFAMOUS LEGENDS.

Paging through this 2012 Voyageur Press release, you'll get the full details on many hoary legends. For example, did Mama Cass choked to death on a ham sandwich? Did Brian Jones drown or was he murdered? What does Led Zeppelin, a red snapper and a young groupie have in common? Did Ziggy Stardust and Jumping Jack Flash do the dirty? Ditto for John Lennon and Brian Epstein? Did Macca die in 1969 only to replaced in the Beatles by a ringer? Why was Gram Parsons' body spirited away and burned in the desert? How much hard time did Johnny Cash really serve in the slammer? Did Keef have a total blood transfusion? What's with Van Halen and brown M&Ms? Did Ozzy really bite off the head of a live bat? Excellent Book

I'm so glad that writers like John Van Auken, are around to spend decades studying Cayce's work, so they can make it understandable to the rest of us. I've tried to read Cayce's work straight from his readings, and for some reason, I just can't make much sense of them. Van Auken puts it all in nicely laid out chapters, and in an easy to understand way, so that I can grasp what Cayce had to say, most of which makes more sense than anything else I read in the daily papers.

Beyond the dynastic period of ancient Egypt, beyond Babylon and Sumeria - most likely to the sunken continents of Atlantis and Lemuria. And it's likely that the seeds of who we are that were sown so long ago originated from beyond this planet.

Edgar Cayce's Tales of Ancient Egypt, as interpreted and related by Cayce scholar John Van Auken, takes us to the period of ancient Egypt's birth and paints an in-depth portrait of the spiritual and political side of its origins.

THE MAN BEHIND THE BOOK
John Van Auken has been studying Cayce's voluminous readings for the past 40 years, specializing in the ancient mysteries and lost civilizations. Auken is also a director at Cayce's Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.). Auken has also written From Karma to Grace: The Power of the Fruit of the Spirit (a book on spiritual living based on Cayce's readings) and Edgar Cayce and the Kabbalah. Cayce's readings, which were transcribed while Cayce was in a trance state accessing the Akashic Records, are often filled with archaic and confusing language. Cayce's readings are usually not easily understood. Having a Cayce scholar like Auken who is not only well-versed in Cayce's readings but also the ancient civilizations about which Cayce speaks makes Auken an invaluable resource in making sense of Cayce's readings - which may very well be some of the most important, if not entirely prophetic, body of work of the last 100 years.

Edgar Cayce grew up a simple, rural man who lived in the late 19th and early 20th Century. He became well known as the "sleeping prophet" for his ability to fall into a trance state and access information from a higher dimensional state. During his trances, he gave medical information to those who were sick, giving them the information necessary to heal. He gave information to oil prospectors that helped them determine where to drill. Because his readings were so accurate and because he had such success, particularly in healing the sick, Cayce became one of the world's most renowned psychics. During Cayce's readings, his wife was the intermediary between the clients and Cayce. She asked the questions on the client's behalf. Starting in 1923, Cayce hired a secretary who began transcribing his readings. Today, 14,000 of Cayce's readings are stored and available at the A.R.E. in Virginia Beach (as well as online and on disc).

Among Cayce's most interesting readings are those involving spirituality, Atlantis and ancient mysteries.

TALES OF ANCIENT EGYPT
The book begins with the story of how ancient Egypt was first populated by Nubians, then peacefully "invaded" by 900 survivors of the Atlantean destruction who descended from a mountainous region of Turkey and met with a population that was well taken care of by the river Nile and preferred to make a peaceful co-existence with the newcomers. The high priest of the Atlanteans was Ra-Ta, a previous incarnation of Cayce's.

The destruction of Atlantis signaled the end of humanity's First Creation and the beginning of the Second Creation. The planet was nearly wiped clean of humans and the mission in those days was to repopulate the planet. Many in these ancient times still retained the Law of One philosophy of our ancestors - the idea that we are a single consciousness having individual experiences as we evolve our way back to Source. But as is also foretold by the Hindu Yuga cycle, humanity was falling into a period of extreme duality. Good and evil. Our Law of One-ness would be replaced by division, separateness, other-ness, us-versus-them. (We are now coming out of this period as the veil over the truth of who we are is being lifted.)

Auken goes on to tell Cayce's tales of the more important figures in Egypt's pre-Dynastic era, often intertwining Egyptian gods into the story.

HERMES-THOTH
Auken mentions that the character of Hermes-Thoth is a difficult one to pinpoint in history - and he is right on. Thoth is an extremely confusing character - appearing in Egypt as Thoth, in Greece as Hermes and in Rome as Mercury. Auken notes that Thoth has been identified at times as Enoch. And apparently one Cayce reading identifies Thoth as a prior incarnation of Jesus. All very confusing indeed. But one consistency I've found is that Cayce identifies Thoth as the builder of the Great Pyramid. Drunvalo Melchizedek also claims this is so.

THE MYSTERIES
The first half of Tales details the lives of a number of pre-Dynastic characters - like Ra-Ta and others who surrounded him (and who reincarnated with Edgar Cayce to be his close friends, family and wife). The second half of the book delves into Cayce's readings that deal with some of the mysteries of ancient Egypt. These subjects deal with ancient flight and caches of prehistoric records buried near the Sphinx on the Giza Plateau as well as prophecies that were built into the physical character of the Great Pyramid. Equally as fascinating is Cayce's tales of where Jesus spent his so-called missing years - studying in India and training for higher states of consciousness within the Great Pyramid.

A New Look At An Ancient Riddle

John Van Auken brings decades of research in the Cayce readings, and the first hand experience of leading many tours to bear on the question of who built the Great Pyramid, Sphinx, and other ancient monuments, and why. Moreover he breathes life into a scenario that took place over thousands of years.

It is a portrayal of civilizations rising, and falling, over thousands of years, victims of natural disasters, and human hubris. In 12,000 B.C.E., with yet another disaster looming, one of the most unique characters of human history, convinces his tribe (living near Mount Arat)to invade Egypt.

The invaders take over, and after a period of turmoil, the author of the invasion, now a priest named Ra Ta, ushers in a golden age of spiritual progress. This culminates in the building of the Great Pyramid, and great progress in both material, and spiritual affairs.

Students of the Cayce material will recognize the details presented. Van Auken's gift is to both bring the story to life, and to place it in a context. His description of a restless Nature, wreaking periodic havoc on humanity, has particular poignancy as we look back at the devastation wrought by natural disasters in this century.

Ancient ruins on Malta, Ireland, off the Indian coast, and most recently off Bimini, bear mute testimony to civilization's rise and fall. Van Auken has the knowledge and the contacts (I once heard Zahi Hawass refer to John as "my very good friend!")to further our exploration of this lost (for now)chapter of our history.

It will reward the thoughtful reader with new insights.

Mel Odom is the author of the Forgotten Realms(r) titles The Lost Library of Cormanthyr, Rising Tide, Under Fallen Stars, and The Sea Devil's Eye and has contributed stories to Realms of the Deep and Neverwinter Nights. Odom has also authored multiple novelizations of the Buffy The Vampire Slayer television series. He lives in Oklahoma.

The title was a misnomer, but it was a nice story

Ignore the introduction on the backcover of the book, it is misleading. Exacting readers could also ignore the title.
Unlike Temple Hill and City of Ravens, the Jewel of Turmish did little to explore the city of Alaghôn, nor justify the city its name nor the book its title. The story was divided between two threads, the druid Haarn and sellsword Druz in the wilderness, and the ancient evil Borran Klosk escaping from his captivity to spread terror in the Vilhon Reach. While both threads were properly developed in their own right, their intertwining was almost accidental and had no element of a plot at all.
The author planned well the series of events which gave the readers an intimate insight into the character of the druid hero. He did not do so well with the villain Borran, readers were left guessing to Borran's actual motivations.
There were numerous references to events in the From the Sea trilogy by the same author, I guess Mel Odom just couldn't resist. Though there was *some* connection, the repetition just gets on the nerves after a while.
As mentioned by a previous reviewer, the author appeared to find too little pages to do justice to the climax after a skillful build-up which took 262 pages (the book had 311). The element of intrigue deftly introduced by Allis, the liason officer assigned to Borran Klosk by shadowy masterminds working behind the scenes, simply evaporated. It could have been put to better use, the additional pages would have been justified by a stronger storyline.
While I have no real complaints about the hero and the villain having only *one* showdown, it was brilliantly done and flowed very well with the story (who needs recurring encounters anyway), I was rather disappointed that it did not bear any significant impact on the hero; emotionally, intellectually or otherwise.

Well-written, but, well....

This fast-paced novel, the third in the alleged "Cities" series has little in common with the other books in the series except that they all take place in the "Forgotten Realms" (a shared fantasy world) and that all show journeyman-level prose, plotting and editing. I'm not really sure why this novel was included in the "Cities" series when it would have just as well made a solo novel (from a content standpoint). Perhaps the submittals crossing the desk of the series editor were a little thin and... what the heck, even though only about 30 pages actually take place in a city, we'll put it in the series (ah, the marketing standpoint!). You learn very little about the city of Alaghon other than it has a port, some taverns, and a lot of graveyards. This book should be part of the "wilderness" series.
That minor quibble aside, what you have here to look forward to reading is an action-packed (definitely rated R for violence and bloodshed) roadtrip by Haarn, a half-elf druid and Druz, a mercenary swordswoman to stop an ancient evil from annihilating one of the cities of the Forgotten Realms.
The characters are well-drawn and just enough complexity is added to make you care about them but Odom shows his strong point as a writer by capulting you through the action to arrive at a climax that takes place five pages before you close the book. The supporting cast of minor characters is well described (even though most are killed) and the numerous plot strings are well-woven into the storyline. Along the way he alternates characters and locations, draws out the suspense and most importantly, makes you ask :"what happens next?"
A few minor 'huhh??'s':
In an interesting exchange with a man-killing wolf, the druid Haarn is able to exchange complete sentences (who, what, why, etc.) but is unable to communicate with his bear sidekick and aide-de-combat in other than feelings. Why one animal and not another? I know, the animal sidekick thing is a staple of fantasy literature, but it could have used a little more fleshing out.
The ancient intelligent evil was trapped, not in stasis, but incarcerated for a hundred years in a tomb, yet he emerges with motivations of bloodlust and conquering that are cardboard caricatures. This would have been really interesting if Odom had elaborated on an undead creature with motivations born of a century of conscious imprisonment, but it's only glanced upon. Instead we hear plenty about its brain-piercing tongue.

NOT Worth the Time

This book took a looooong time getting to its point. It begins with Druid, Harn, looking for the killers of wolves in his forest. After a while, he ends up chasing a wolf of his own accord, and this takes up over 2/3rds of his story. Personally, the story fleshed out his character, but did little for excitement, as you pretty much knew the outcome long before the pair ever faced one another. By the time he goes head to head with the villain you really have to wonder about his ultimate motivation, and exactly why things are happening.
The Villian never really gives a reason for his quest, aside from the undead standard "I hate all living beings" spiel. Klossk pretty much is played as pure evil, with no redeeming qualities at all (you never even feel like his attacks are somehow justified in his own mind). As an aside, his werespider compatriot is the only really intersting character and I would have loved to have seen her fleshed out more. Also, the Klossk is some rare type of undead, but no explanation of how his being such a creature differentiates him from other more well known undead types. 2 paragraphs and all the confusion over his Morgh status would have been resolved.
At the end of it all it all comes down to the question of whether the book is worth reading. If you like really well fleshed out characters, with no real background then you'll love this book. Looking for a fun interesting read? Pass.
The other complaint about this book isn't that it is part of the City Series, and 90% of the book is set in the wilds, but rather that it had no sense of where it was located. This story could have taken place in any world setting. This one really dropped the ball.
2 stars for characterization only. This could have been a terrific read!

Solid, gripping space-opera adventure -- 4+ stars

This sequel to The Silver Ship and the Sea is the rare follow-on that's better than the original. Brenda Cooper's writing just keeps getting better, and this is a first-rate book. Not perfect, mind, but the bobbles aren't serious, and she has written an intelligent and gripping space-opera adventure with believable characters and some surprising twists. Recommended, though you probably need to read the first book first to make much sense of the plot. Which is no hardship, as it's also quite good. Both are marketed as YA, but suitable for SF fans of any age.

I see Cooper has a third book in the series, Wings of Creation, on deck for November 2009 publication. I'll be reading it.

"Reading the Wind" a small step forward

Brenda Cooper's "Reading the Wind" (Tor, $25.95, 446 pages) is one of those books that you can't wait to finish - which isn't necessarily a good thing.

This is Cooper's second solo effort, and the sequel to "The Silver Ship and the Sea", with many of the same flaws. But it is also a better book, and bodes well for the next installment of a series about genetically modified humans (and some not modified) on planets far from Earth.

Those flaws, though, make you want to find out what happened more than you want to read every page. Usually, that means some judicious cutting would have helped (it would have) or that it's pretty clear what's going to happen next (it is) or that the characters just aren't that interesting (they are teen-agers, and they aren't).

But I still looked forward to picking up "Reading the Wind" and did want to know how Cooper was going to put the pieces together, even if the shape of the completed puzzle was never much in doubt. So should you go back and read "The Silver Ship and the Sea" (which, by the way, has nothing to do with either) and dive into the series? Maybe. What about if you already read the first one? Then definitely soldier on.

The final judgment won't really come until the series is wrapped up, presumably in the next volume - but, as before, a better title and a cover illustration that had some relation to what actually happens in the book would help in the short run.
