The best account of Biblical-Classical tug of war

This is a learned, but highly readable--and fascinating--account of the great tug-of-war in modern intellectual history between pagan, classical knowledge, and the Bible. In other words, how to reconcile classical learning and philosophy--the Greek way--with Hebraic teaching? (Especially hard if you were German) That was a gigantic problem starting in the Enlightenment, and it carried through well into the 20th century. Leonard is a wonderful writer, and she explores the stakes of this struggle in clean, vivid prose. Who would have thought intellectual history could be such a pleasure to read?

beautiful Christian inspirational novel

Popular and famous Hollywood action star Dayne Matthews has it all but deep down he feels empty inside. Katy Hart who refused a part in a movie with him after she was attacked by a stalker made him feel alive but she and Dayne live in two different worlds and a true Christian would never becomes involved with a man like him. Dayne is looking forward to seeing Katy in Bloomington where part of the film will be shot.

Dayne knows that his biological family the Baxters live there but he won't reveal himself to them because he doesn't want to bring the ugliness of his world home to them. Katy who is the director of the Christian Kids' Theater (C KT), is dealing with the aftermath of two young children in the CKT having lost their lives to a drunken driver. The older teens want revenge but Katy tries to teach them that it is not their place to pass judgment. She also has to deal with the deep feelings she has for Dayne, knowing that nothing could ever come of them while he tries to find meaning in his life. Thanks to her, he is on the road to finding himself.

This beautiful Christian inspirational novel has life lessons that reach out beyond religion. Dayne might have no choice in his decision not to introduce himself to the Baxters because his father has decided to search for him. The love the two protagonists feel for one another is beautiful although both believe for different reasons that they can't be together. Katy's nurturing abilities to every one she knows combined with her faith makes her a strong person who helps others through the tragedy. Karen Kingsbury has written a wonderful novel that makes readers feel hope.

This book is wonderful. Everything I have read of Karen Kingsbury has been excellent, but this one exceeded all of them. I laughed and cried. I wish I did not have to wait until May for the next book.

My goodness, these books rock! Karen has an eternal gift of drawing us into her fictious world and challenging our faith through our characters and plotlines. I love to read up the parts of the Bible she mentions or alludes to in her novels, connecting the story to the truth. Simply awesome Karen!

Kindle edition: No pattern templates

Please note that this review is for the Kindle edition. This is a great book and for content I would have easily given it a 5 star rating. Nice projects, cute modern fabrics, and great instructions. However, be aware that the print version comes with a set of pull out patterns that you will not get in the Kindle edition! Some of the items are made based on measured fabric pieces, but some are very specific shapes and without the templates they would be very difficult to make. First sewing book that I have purchased for the Kindle, so lesson learned. I thought the templates might be included with some way to print, but that's not the case. I returned and will be ordering the print edition.

Wonderful Projects Any New Mom Would Love

This book makes me smile with all the adorable projects for babies...cute hats, nursery decor, sweet little shoes, bibs, a fabric storage box, and so much more. The two things that make this book great besides the projects themselves are the many color photographs and two large pull-out pages of full-size patterns so the user doesn't have to guess at dimensions or enlarge a pattern. I also like the modern tone of the fabrics used that inspire getting away from the typical pastels and ginghams and instead trying brighter colors, bold polka-dots, etc.

Besides the expected projects such as bibs, quilts, booties, burp cloths, and hats, there are also fun items such as baby washcloth "candies" and "lollipops" for a different shower gift presentation, a changing pad, nursing cover, baby car seat canopy, diaper bag, soft toys, elastic flower headbands, and a unique diaper clutch bag for those times when a full diaper bag isn't needed.

The book does assume that the user has some sewing experience but there are projects that even beginners will be able to make, with clear instructions and diagrams.

This is a wonderful resource for unique and personalized gifts any new mom would love.

Book for mother's who love to sew

What a great book especially a great gift to any mommy or to be who loves to sew. This book covers everything you can imagine that you would need for the baby. The quilts, hat, bib, toys are just too adorable. I wish for the ebook they had patterns in small scale that could have been enlarged as some of them need pattern pieces to finish the projects. Having said that I am still very mush satisfied with the projects I can work on...lovely design and colors used in each projects.

Great Book for Starting Out

This is an excellent book for the novice--concepts are introduced at a leisurely pace and considerable time is taken to develop them. The tone is slightly casual, and the book as a whole is entirely unintimidating and accessible. Advanced concepts are absent so if you're looking to advance your knowledge to the next level, you'd be better off looking elsewhere. This is, however, one of the only textbooks I've owned that I've been able to read large portions of in a single sitting; I don't want to say it's like reading a novel, but it is as close as you're going to get with a textbook on rheology.

A good introductory text, 5-stars for chemical engineers

This is a good introductory textbook that is aimed at several possible audiences; chemical engineers, chemists, and engineers who deal with structural materials (metallurgists, mechanical engineers, civil engineers, and structural engineers in general). The book covers all aspects of polymeric materials - their chemistry, structure, synthesis, properties and processing. Being an introductory text only the basic ideas of these topics are covered, but there are adequate references to allow the reader to delve more deeply into any of these subjects. The book contains solved examples and unsolved homework problems. Being an introductory text, it is oriented to several possible audiences; so let me therefore consider the book from the perspective of these possible audiences.

1) Engineers interested in structural materials. As a metallurgist, I put myself into this category. Like most engineers in this category I have not been formally exposed to any organic chemistry, although I have had much more of a physical and inorganic chemistry than most structural engineers. I found that the lack of an organic chemistry background was is an impediment to getting the most from this book, but not an insurmountable one. I did not feel that there was enough background material in the part of the book on polymer fundamentals for me to understand all of the material that was presented, and I would have liked an appendix that provided the necessary organic chemistry fundamentals. However, this did not prevent me from getting a lot from the rest of the book. All in all, I liked this book and while I did not have enough of an organic chemistry background to understand all of it, I definitely had enough to learn a lot about:
a. Types of polymers, including their structures, synthesis, the determination of molecular weights and polymer solutions
b. Polymer melting and glass transition behavior
c. The thermodynamics of rubber elasticity
d. Rheology of polymers
e. Viscoelasticity and polymer deformation in general
I have a good background in chemical thermodynamics and physical chemistry so the sections on thermal transitions and solutions were no problem for me. Most engineers should have enough of a thermodynamics background to handle the use of the thermodynamics approach to rubber elasticity, but the solutions section will likely be difficult for them. On the plus side, they should be very familiar with the deformation concepts discussed in the book (including tension, creep, stress relaxation and dynamical testing), so the sections applying these concepts to polymers should be very helpful to them - they were for me. Overall, for myself and for this group in general I would give the book a solid 4-stars.

2. Chemists - They should have no problems with the chemistry and structures of polymers. Likewise, with those sections that bear heavily on thermodynamics. However, the sections on rheology and mechanical properties may be challenging. A background appendix would have been helpful for these readers. I would also rate the book 4-stars for this group.

3. Chemical Engineers. The authors of the book are both chemical engineers, so it is not surprising that the book is best suited for this group. They should have all of the necessary background and the book appears to be tailored for them, so I would rate the book 5-stars for this group. It appears to be an excellent chemical engineering text. I am only using the word appears because I am not a chemical engineer and do not therefore have the proper background to make a definitive statement about this.

The book definitely improved my understanding of this class of materials and I recommend it with the proviso that those without a sufficient organic chemistry may not get as much from is as they could have had they had this knowledge. Likewise, a chemist will likely lack all the required background in deformation that would allow them to get the most from the areas of the book that deal with this subject. The book is probably best for chemical engineers.

A great way to get started with Polymeric materials~

This text seems to be geared towards chemical engineering students, especially those in upper level courses or specific graduate programs, or novices to the field specific to polymers. The information is well presented and within grasp for those with a decent background in inorganic chemistry. Those with specific interests in the solid/liquid state polymers will find some refreshing new insight into this realm. Liquid crystal polymers are well explained as well.

Much of the text involves upper level chemistry principles and physics principles, so it might be over the head of those without the necessary background, but it is written in a way that even if one doesn't quite grasp a particular concept (such as Flory-Huggins theory to site an example - nightmares from chemistry 2310 resurfacing!). Having a good grasp of upper level chemistry I was able to skim through the text and was quite pleased with the content as well as the layout. As always, Wiley has put a rather nice "See Inside' feature together for the Amazon listing.
