Caitlin Eckhart’s six-year-old stepson, Geordie, runs ahead of her into the school auditorium to see the exhibits at the Fall Festival, disappearing into the crowd. Caitlin looks at Geordie’s project, talks to his teacher, and then leaves for work without seeing Geordie again. When the boy doesn’t show up for class, Caitlin, as his stepmother and the last person to see him before his disappearance, is soon being asked some rather pointed questions by the police. Things come to a head when Noah, Caitlin’s husband and Geordie’s father, learns a dark secret from Caitlin’s past and asks her to leave their home. Alone, frantic, and desperate to find Geordie, whom she knows is still alive because she has spoken to him briefly on her cell phone, Caitlin investigates on her own. Multidimensional and sympathetic characters, fast pacing, and a twisty plot will draw readers into this well-crafted suspense novel. This one will appeal to fans of Mary Higgins Clark and Joy Fielding. --Sue OBrien

Heartpounding
By 4everBOOKS
Caitlin and Noah have both suffered family tragedy in their lives before they married. Now they seem to have the ideal life. Caitlin has never been happier and she adores her stepson Geordie (a nickname for George). The morning after a family gathering for Geordie's 6th birthday, Caitlin takes Geordie to school to see his school project at the schools fall festival. Geordie runs inside ahead of Caitlin and she loses him in the crowd. Thinking he is safe at school she leaves for work. When Geordie is marked absent from his first class, the mystery begins and Caitlin's ideal life unravels.
Naturally, Caitlin is questioned and suspected since she was the last to see Geordie. She is also forced to reveal a devastating secret from her life before Noah. Plus, their past family tragedies now play a role in the present causing more hurt and family destruction. Hurt, terrified and felling alone, Caitlin begins her own relentless search for the stepson she deeply loves.
MacDonald does such great job of describing Geordie at his birthday party. He is precious with his glasses and gapped tooth smile holding his worn stuffed animal, Bandit. My heart strings were definitely pulled. She also describes his weird bigoted Aunt Naomi, his playboy Uncle Dan, his sweet Grandparents, Paula and Westy, and his cousin Travis who is rude, angry and unfeeling. Travis drives Caitlin nuts with his bad attitude and gives her a few scares. The suspects are perfectly laid out.
The atmosphere after Geordie disappears becomes cold, wet and dreary. The story moves quickly as Caitlin constantly searches for Geordie. She questions everyone and everything. She was a strong woman who was never afraid to get in anyone's face when necessary and she never let her obvious fear distract her from her only priority, finding Geordie alive. There is no horribly graphic violence and no sex. The "f" word is uttered a few times out of a male characters anger or frustration.
The story is fast paced and relatively short at 200 pages. That combination is a perfect read for me. Plus, I love a mystery when I can say to myself "wow, I didn't see that coming". The story fell into place perfectly. The Amazon description is perfect: Missing Child is a "heart-pounding domestic suspense". I loved it.

Missing Child

I am a big Patricia McDonald fan and make it a point to read every new novel she writes. I definitely enjoyed her latest book, although there have been others I've enjoyed more. That said it did keep me guessing until the very end, even after I was certain I had it figured out. All in all I found it a good enough read to pass on to one of my children in hopes that she'll discover a new author that she too will enjoy!
