About the Author
M. Ingrid Dvirnak has determined that her life s purpose is to communicate the messages of God through both spoken and written words in ways that her family and friends, church and denomination will be enriched to the glory of God.
She has served as the former editor of Baptist Leader magazine and as a consulting editor and writer for Judson Bible Journeys for Adults, published by Judson Press. She is the author of The Work of the Clerk (Judson Press) and co-author of Renewing God s People (American Baptist Home Mission Societies). Previously she was also the editor and program associate for American Baptist Women s Ministries in Valley Forge, PA. More recently she coordinated the communication efforts of the American Baptist Churches of the Rocky Mountains. She is currently retired, living in Elizabeth, Colorado.
Susan Gillies, MA, spent more than twenty years in leadership positions with American Baptist Churches USA, including directing the Ministry of the Laity in the Workplace program for National Ministries (now the American Baptist Home Mission Societies) and serving as Executive Minister of American Baptist Churches of Nebraska. In retirement, she now is a public speaker, newspaper columnist, consultant, and silversmith in her hometown of Omaha, Nebraska.

A Good Reminder

"Empowering Laity, Engaging Leaders: Tapping the Root for Ministry" is the third book in the "Living Church" series from Judson Press. Authors Susan Gillies and M. Ingrid Dvirnak work together to create a book that is not only practical but is full of examples from the local church. There are plenty of books out there to tell you all the things that are wrong with the American Church. There are few that offer any practical solutions or examples how these solutions have been put into practice. Gillies and Dvirnak willingly admit there is a weak local church leadership problem in many American churches, but they do not stop with doom and gloom. They offer some practical ways to encourage, maintain, and grow new and existing leadership within the church. One of their better insights is the helpful reminder that 99% of the church body are considered "laity" ie "non-clergy." And if meaningful long lasting ministry is going to happen it is going to be done by them. They also remind us that ministry is not only things that happen within the church or even things initiated by the local church. Instead most ministry is done in our everyday lives in our work places, homes, and social environments. Finally, one of the great contributions this book offers is the reminder that ministry is multi-generational. If the local church ever hopes to accomplish great ministry it must tap into all ages of leadership from children to youth to families to singles to senior adults to even the home bound. Everyone must be engaged. Each of these areas are elaborated upon with a set of helpful "steps" and a local church example for nearly every point along your journey toward fuller laity led local church ministry.

Valuable book for church leadership and for group study

"Empowering Laity, Engaging Leaders" was used as a group study in our church. It engendered great discussion which led to concrete suggestions to our church to become more fruitful. The book is full of actual stories of church situations, and contains very valuable suggestions for how to develop and grow leadership. It's greatest value lies in the emphasis on moving The Church to see ministry as the main goal, and to move church members outside the walls of the church building to make disciples for Jesus Christ.

User friendly

Deeply rooted in biblical spirituality, this book is readable and challenging. The authors' obvious commitment to the church and real-life experience in the church makes it more usable than many a book written by would-be church saviors. The lists are practical, the suggestions do-able and the pacing and style make it a fun trip. Chapter 3, with its 10 types of leaders, perfectly exemplifies Dvirnak and Gillies' playful approach to a serious subject. Read it and take it to your next church committee meeting!
