Delirious New Orleans (Roger Fullington Series in Architecture), by Stephen Verderber

From iconic neighborhoods such as the French Quarter and the Garden District to more economically modest but no less culturally vibrant areas, architecture is a key element that makes New Orleans an extraordinary American city. Delirious New Orleans began as a documentary project to capture the idiosyncratic vernacular architecture and artifacts—vintage mom-and-pop businesses, roadside motels, live music clubs, neon signs, wall murals, fast-food joints, and so on—that helped give the city's various neighborhoods their unique character. But because so many of these places and artifacts were devastated by Hurricane Katrina, Delirious New Orleans has become both a historical record of what existed in the past and a blueprint for what must be rebuilt and restored to retain the city's unique multicultural landscape.

Stephen Verderber starts with the premise that New Orleans's often-overlooked neighborhoods imbue the city with deep authenticity as a place. He opens Delirious New Orleans with a photo-essay that vividly presents this vernacular architecture and its artifacts, both before Katrina and in its immediate aftermath. In the following sections of the book, which are also heavily illustrated, Verderber takes us on a tour of the city's commercial vernacular architecture, as well as the expressive folk architecture of its African American neighborhoods. He discusses how the built environment was profoundly shaped by New Orleans's history of race and class inequities and political maneuvering, along with its peculiar, below-sea-level geography. Verderber also considers the aftermath of Katrina and the armada of faceless FEMA trailers that have, at least temporarily and by default, transformed this urban landscape.

Review
"Delirious New Orleans makes the argument that this collection of vernacular architecture serves as cultural touchstones, and that its presence is a necessary component to this great American city. " Kevin Alter, School of Architecture, University of Texas at Austin "As well as providing a superb record of New Orleans's endangered urban fabric, Delirious New Orleans is also a meditation on "placemaking", something he feels modern architects and town planners have ignored...Verderber's evocative, even loving, descriptions of these structures and artefacts and his striking images create a memorable celebration of the built environment of New Orleans and reflect a deep understanding of place. He hopes his study is not a eulogy but a blueprint for a soon-to-be-reborn city...Whether it continues to fulfil this role in the future will depend on whether the authorities listen to the communities they are supposed to represent and to "preservation warriors" such as Verderber; and whether placemaking triumphs over placelessness." P.D. Smith, Times Literary Supplement, 26th June, 2009

About the Author
Stephen Verderber has taught in the School of Architecture at Tulane University for more than twenty years and is a registered architect. He is currently Professor of Architecture in the School of Architecture at Clemson University in South Carolina.

Very nice book
By tfutrell
This book is well designed. I enjoyed seeing the before and after Katrina images. Not only showing the social/economic damage caused by Katrina, Stephen Verderber gives us a new insight into the often unnoticed vernacular of New Orleans. This is not a typical New Orleans book. Restaurant signs, normal neighborhood architecture and the post-Katrina urban landscape of the city make this book a keeper.

Review

"…this book does a good job of describing the multitude of cargo theft challenges that security professionals face today…It is recommended reading for anyone who is involved in any aspect of supply chain security." --Security Management, June 2013

"Although the book has a decent stab at the subject on a global scale, it has an American centre of gravity describing the weave of theft across the union and the centres of conurbation. It ranges across the modes of transport, very properly remembering to include pipelines in its review. You could easily use this book as a course book for aspiring security professionals. Any underwriter of transport shipping and cargo links should take the time to order and read this book. The commonsense chapters on security precautions and risk management are it seems always sorely needed in the insurance industry. Reading the later chapters we are reminded how information on this form of crime has at least in part been freed up by the internet age and by specialist organisations who keep an idea on this form of economic activity… The book is well bound and printed and redolent of a sober American course book. The author's writing style seems to have been honed by his exposure to favoured techniques taught in the military. He tells you what he will say, says it and then summarises each laconic chapter. This is the book of a practical specialist rather than an academic one. It deserves to be on the shelves of people everywhere who are paid to care for cargo and to shield their goods from the depredations of criminals and to shelter their business results from parasitic losses." --Maritime Advocate Online, August 2012

"This work details the threat that cargo theft poses to the national economy, examines the impact of cargo theft on individual supply chain stakeholders, from manufacturers all the way to consumers, and provides a methodology for establishing supply chain security and loss prevention programs. The first part of the book explains basics of cargo theft in the 21st century, giving background on organized criminal groups and the black market, with separate chapters on high tech and pharmaceuticals. Part 2 describes methods for determining risk and outlines the roles and responsibilities of professionals in corporate security, insurance companies, third-party security providers, and law enforcement. This section also covers physical security, in-transit security, active monitoring, and issues in air, rail, and pipeline security. There is also an overview of cargo theft task forces and organizations. The book's reader-friendly layout offers many subheadings, bullet points, and chapter key points. Burges is a consultant in supply chain intelligence and risk analysis. Academic Press is an imprint of Elsevier." --Reference and Research Book News, October 2012

Second in a series of stand-alone adventures about the clerics of the Forgotten Realms world.

Mistress of the Night is the second title in this Forgotten Realms novel series that focuses specifically on priests, the popular D&D iconic class also known as clerics. Each title chronicles priests loyal to a different deity in the Forgotten Realms pantheon. Moments of Brilliance... and mediocrity
By Ben Wand
This is a tough book to peg. One good thing is it's unique enough of a story that it certainly wasn't bland.

Feena is a werewolf and priestess of Selune, who returns to the temple in yhuann where a Sharran cult is emerging. A local wizards' son is recruited to the Sharran cult, and is instrumental in their plans to recover an ancient artifact as well as in the ongoing conflict between Shar and Selune.

There are parts in the story where it drags a bit. There are also parts where it's exciting and intriguing. With a tad bit more polish, this probably could have been among the best FR books ever. Despite a 3 star rating, I would still recommend it, because it is unique enough that others may enjoy it.

Very Good
By Neso
Gross and Bassingthwaite bring us a very entertaining story about eternal struggle between Selune and her dark sister Shar, this time taking root in Sembian city of Yhauun. Although the book was written by two authors, they complement each other masterfully, and you can't really tell which part was written by which author.

This book delivers a lot of details on Selune's and Shar's clergy rituals, rites and hierarchy. I expected much more of that in other "Priests" books, but only "Maiden of Pain" delivered, to some extent. The characters, and especially Keph (one of two main characters), are fairly interesting. I only wished for more insight into Feena's (the other main character) past. The plot is solid but nothing of breathtaking or truly memorable. The pace of the book is at a slower side, just the way I like novels to be, so the authors could delve into detail a bit deeper. The authors describe the setting beautifully, giving you a rich picture of Yhauun and its major landmarks. The writing styles, and especially dialogues, are fluid and rich.

I have no major complains about this novel. To put is in short, it is a combination of good characters and even better writing style standing on a solid plot. Make sure to read it.

As for the "Priests" series as a whole, I was very pleasantly surprised before I read "Lady of Poison". That book is so badly written that I can't believe it even got published. "Queen of Depths" is an average FR novel, classic Byers I would say. This book and "Maiden of Pain" are in my opinion true jewels of the series. The series got an average of 3.25 stars from me, which is above average. If only not for that "Lady of Poison"...

Interesting concept
By Andy Gray
This was a fun book for me to read. I don't want to post spoilers here, but there are some interesting twists involving the main characters that play a big part of the plot down the road.

The author does a very good job of moving this story along with the right mix of action, details and setting descriptions. Also, some of the things the author adds are rather unconventional and therefore makes the book very interesting. He tends to go against the grain in a couple of areas, and for that I applaud the author.

This is not the type of book that you see rehashed and rehashed over and over again, this is something new and interesting. Give it a shot if you are a fan of the Forgotten Realms.

Short of Potential, but Decent
By AnthonyWrites
MINOR SPOILER WARNING: There are no crucial plot elements revealed in this review. However, in the interest of providing a very in depth review, there are some minor spoilers in the text. They should not in any way ruin the story, but they do reveal some story events. If that bugs you out, STOP HERE!

Some background on this review: I had read a few Forgotten Realms books. They were not good. In fact, they were mostly refuse, most notably the Ed Greenwood, creator of the Realms, authored "Spellfire," which I threw across the room halfway through, it was so pathetic. Even though I had enjoyed "Horselords," I had sworn off of FR books altogether due to my other reads, until an online acquaintance who worked in the WotC/TSR fiction dept. convinced me that they were doing some new and exciting things. So based on his recommendation, specifically for this then "new" series, I gave it another shot. Now, the review:

The story revolves around Baylee, a ranger/archaeologist who was mentored by a mage with whom he's had a falling out. Baylee is more interested in knowledge than riches, much like his mentor. When the mage, Fannt Golsway, is murdered by a drow (yes, there's them drow again :-/ ) early on, Baylee, away on an expedition, is implicated. Fannt lived in Waterdeep, so a contingent (read: small army) from there is sent to find Baylee, which they do easily enough. It becomes quickly apparent that Baylee is not guilty of anything, and the search for the murderer is tied up in Fannt's search for the Lost Library of Cormanthyr, which was lost at the fall of Myth Drannor and is now guarded by a lich.

First, the good: Mel's writing style is easy to read. He isn't overly wordy, nor does he belabor anything to much, so the story moves along at a fairly brisk pace. The plot itself is compelling, especially the idea of a vast, hidden store of ancient knowledge that far surpasses anything known on Toril today (!) including Candlekeep. Baylee is a sympathetic character, one you want to see succeed. He has a sidekick, an Azmyth Bat named Xuxa, who can telepathically communicate with others. The bat is rather endearing and is kind of a conscience to Baylee, being portrayed as an older, wiser being. A feminine interest is the civilar of the Waterdeep Watch, Cordyan Tsald. She's portrayed as strong and efficient, if a bit wet behind the ears. The drow mage is Krystarn Fellhammer, who is under servitude to the lich Folgrim Shallowsoul, guardian of the Lost Library. She displays the standard hatred and lack of moral stability we're used to from drow. The lich is sufficiently evil and cunning. Also involved is another ranger by the name of Civva Cthulad (sounds Lovecraftian, does it not... not that there's any other connection here... Civva is as honorable as they come.) The characters are sufficiently distinct and recognizable from scene to scene to give the story a consistent feel, for the most part. The ending, too, is rather satisfying. I won't go so far as to tell what it is, but, as you'll see below, it saved the book from becoming just another reason not to read anymore FR stuff...

Which takes us to the gripes: There were many. None of these, keep in mind, were enough to make me want to pitch the book aside, because, all in all, it was a decent read. But I do have quite a stack of books still left to read, and I don't want to spend my time in books that don't live up to their potential if I can help it. This book was borderline. I truly believe that Mel sold his subject matter furiously short, and not just that, but also the characters that he developed deserved much more attention and development than he gave them.

Now, to get specific: Mel is a good writer. But, he has a tendency to drop into spurts of over-description all at once. He'll drop out of the action to completely describe a character or scene with, to me, an overabundance of flowery metaphoric description. Now, if all of his writing was like this, it wouldn't be noticable, but much of his writing is quite efficient and sparse, and these fits of description sound like he doesn't trust himself to adequately give us the picture in the midst of the action, and that he doesn't trust our imaginations to fill in enough of the blanks for him. He needs, I think, to trust himself more. That said, the book needed, I think, about another 75-100 pages, and not for more description :-) Several times characters were introduced, then disappeared into the ether after they were made to seem *very* important to the plot. The most glaring instance was at the very beginning, with the introduction of the lady warrior/thief (?) Jaeleen, an old love interest of Baylee's. Mel gave her as much importance as Baylee, to the point where the reader thinks he sees the pattern that these two adventurers are about to be thrown together into something bigger than themselves, and will need to overcome their personal conflicts (fairly well established by Mel) to succeed. A few pages into chapter six (where the basic plot is still being established) she's gone, never to return. She is not so much as mentioned, save as a comparison to the civilar a scant two or three times. This reader still wonders what in Hades happened to her. Though there was conflict between Cordyan and Baylee, it was fairly superficial because they had no history. The conflict between Baylee and Jaeleen was fat with potential, potential Mel tossed to the wind. In fact, had he found a way to keep Jaeleen around, the additional conflict with the civilar would have given much more body to all of the characters. Speaking of the Cordyan, Mel backed off of that one too, unfortunately. She comes off as two-dimensional. The only depth you see is an inkling of attraction to Baylee, which goes basically nowhere throughout the book. Otherwise, she the standard, young, efficient do-gooder who also happens to have the looks of a Victoria's Secret model. In fact, Mel, to my chagrin, treated most of the women somewhat as objects, making more of the way their clothes fit their lithe figures than he did of their actual personalities. This is just a lack of care and dedication, because Mel's writing makes it obvious that he's more than capable of the depth that I was expecting but missed. The drow, Krystarn, is hopelessly stereotypical. She does the standard deal-making and doublecrossing, right from the beginning, in the continual power-struggle of the underdark. Mel deals with Folgrim, the lich, with much more skill, IMO. Early on, you have no idea who he is. He is shrouded in mystery for much of the book and his shadow looms large. Unfortunately, he ends up coming off a bit inconsistently at the end when he's finally revealed to everyone involved, showing massive and impressive strength (as he should) and at the same time, having glaring weaknesses that don't seem consistent, such as the complete inability to deal with a fire started in the library, his raison d'etre, during the big climactic scene. Baylee himself is much better handled, as the main character should be. However, he comes off as a bit too 'heroic' if I may say so. He's incredibly brutal in battle, but doesn't carry much in the way of weapons (a sling is it, for the most part) as a ranger normally would. He's somewhat of an archaelogical Dudley-do-right, at least toward himself, and this detracts from the personality that Mel started to add at the beginning by hinting at some weaknesses, especially in terms of trusting others. But he progresses into someone that's pretty much got it all down to a "T", despite his youth. He's street-savvy, battle-savvy, quite knowledgable, and has high, high ethics, esp as concerns knowledge. He's missing some glaring weaknesses.

Now in terms of story, a glaring problem with the plot is that the opposition to Baylee's goals aren't consistent. He isn't dogged at every step by an overwhelming evil. In fact, for the most part, you never doubt Baylee's ability to pull through the situations, which takes away some of the possible suspense. He doesn't take enough hurt in battles, he doesn't have conflict from the others like he should, and he's never *really* wrong

about anything important. Even though he was a suspect in his mentor's murder, he was basically off the hook right away, even after he took off without informing the Waterdeep watch that he was going away... It would have added greatly to the suspense if Mel had taken the care to make sure that Baylee was up to his eyeballs in suspicion and therefore *had* to follow his master's trail in order to clear himself. Instead, that possibility is whitewashed and Baylee's just after knowledge in memory of his master, which is reasonable motivation, but not as urgent. Another conflict/threat problem is Krystarn. She never *really* provides the level of threat she could to Baylee, even though she began the story by *savaging* Baylee's mentor, a very powerful mage in his own right. She is sent to dispose of him, then just disappears and is far too easily diverted later in the story. She goes back instead and works on her own ambitions that, while they will eventually intersect Baylee's motivations, don't serve to dog Baylees' steps and make *real* trouble for him. One point in the book, after an underwater scene, Baylee is at odds with a Pirate captian who was begrudgingly helping him. There's no setup. At first they're off balance and helping each other warily, then, with a

chapter break, they are throwing knives at each other and fighting with no reasonable transition work provided by the author. This is just sloppy, and, I'll say it again, Mel's ability is, I think, much higher than what he did there.

One final gripe: Sometimes Mel was a little to plain about game mechanics. Specific spell names remind us that it's an AD&D book, rather than a fantasy fiction book. The worst instance is the power of the Azmyth bat Xuxa to cast a silence spell once a day. He literally says "The azmyth had the ability to magically create silence in the area near her once a day." Might as well have just printed the spell description from the PHB or the power description from the MM or MC.

All in all, the book *was* a decent, fun read. The fate of the characters and the Library is handled quite well. But Mel had SO much to work with that he left out. The potential for conflict and suspense was enormous. The characters began well but ended up looking a bit too good and untouchable. I found myself very disappointed that someone who could write so well would sell such a great idea so short...

A poor book by any standards...
By Edwin H Morales
This book leaves much to be desired. First of all, the author leave too many unfinished stories. For example, it gives you an interesting epilogue which introduces almost the best rounded characters in the story. At the end of this epilogue, the author gives us the hint that these characters are going to return to the main story, but this never happens. This elemment in the book repeats itself even with another character Jaeleen, which is mentioned in almost half of the book but it is never given a satisfactory conclusion (the character disappears without a trace and a reason as to why). Also I found the action of the story (such as battle scenes) being poorly described and ended so fast that they became pointless. (One hit-one kill).
The development of the story and characters leaves much to be desired. For example, the main character is an "overqualified" adventurer who never lose an argument or a battle. At the end of the book, we have a main character who knows everything, fights (and wins) with everything. Indeed, it makes it difficult for the reader to identify him(her)self with the main character. My recommendation...do not buy this book. There are other and much better fantasy books out there.

"The hobgoblin's head exploded when a large diamond slammed through it." (p.297)
By L Gontzes
The Lost Library of Cormanthyr is the first in a series of four novels (known as the Lost Empires series and which includes Faces of Deception, Star of Cursrah, and the Nether Scroll) that deal with the secrets of four of Toril's long lost ancient civilizations.
The book describes the adventures of an archaeologist ranger named Baylee Arnvold who, along with his azmyth bat familiar, tries to find out who killed his mentor, Fannt Golsway, in the city of Waterdeep. His efforts lead him from adventure to adventure before he has to face a powerful undead which in its quest for power is set on magically transporting one of Faerun's oldest and most magnificent libraries to the Astral Plane so that it may protect its contents from interlopers as well as unlock Toril's secrets without the threat of that many adventurers interfering.
Mel Odom does a good job of acquiring and presenting essential knowledge relevant to Faerun, including customs, religion and the history of the peoples of Toril e.g. "The city had once been called Rainydale, known as Selarrynm in the elven tongue, and had been one of the larger trading posts outside of Myth Drannor proper." (p.256) Additionally, the author does a wonderful job of describing the Legend of the Sleeping Kings (pp. 47-48) as well as the sacrificial altar dedicated to the god Vaprak, a deity worshiped by trolls and ogres alike. (p.46)
Moreover, on page 133 he provides very good descriptions of the fireball and web spells, while on pages 267-268 he does a good job in his portrayal of hook horrors.
Furthermore, Mel Odom is on the ball when the baelnorn utters: "In truth you are all humans, and I would care less if you all die in this endeavor. Myth Drannor and its environs should never have had to suffer the presence of humans, dwarves, or any other barbarian species that came into the City of Songs and drew her down." (p.284)
Finally, the author succeeds in keeping the reader focused with phrases such as "Trollkin are known for their appetites. Human flesh is thought of as a delicacy by some." (p.49)
On the negative side, the author repeatedly fails in providing an accurate description of the drow and instead treats them as if they were mere kobolds (!) e.g. "The dark elves had more lies than truth, and absolutely no honor. To enter the Underdark was to walk into death itself," (p.70) while on page 274, Baylee tells the dark elves "You have a chance at living. Take it and run," and... they actually fled (!) before Caleban, the wizard, added "You can't trust even a drow's cowardice." You have got to be kidding me!
Moreover, in Chapter 12 Mel Odom shows what apparently are 1st level characters picking off drow who die after a single blow!!! In truth, the dark elves would have pulverized these humans without even breaking into a sweat. In short, the fight against the drow described on pages 270-274 was just sad!
Additionally, there were silly and wholly unnecessary mistakes e.g. Fellhammer is more a dwarven family name than a dark elf's; it's elementary! To that one should add that a Bag of Holding does not transport troops. Also, Mel Odom refers to a dead drow male on page 273 as "the dead man" and then goes on to say "...then heard a man scream in agony: `My eyes, my eyes.'" Really? In Common? I seriously doubt that. Furthermore, a lich does not only NOT scream in pain when thrown ordinary caltrops, but is actually unaffected, so to have this be THE highlight is highly inappropriate to put it politely. So it's silly mistakes like that that take away from the overall enjoyment.
Other drawbacks include Xuxa, the azmyth bat, which was just not interesting at all and the mystery behind Jaeleen; one moment she is part of this novel and the next she just vanishes.
Finally, Mel Odom could have done a much better job of describing how and why the dark elf got involved with the lich and why one of the most amazing libraries of all times was not protected with traps or mythal that would have kept it both fire-proof and lightning-proof.
I wish more novels would be set in never or little-before covered areas of Faerun, namely Hillsfar, Zhentil Keep, Thay, Chessenta, Threskel, Unther, and Mulhorand to name a few, as opposed to the usual, Waterdeep/Sword Coast or Western Heartlands locations.
If it's Myth Drannor you long for, try and get your hands on a copy of the Ruins of Myth Drannor accessory/adventure (it is Second Edition AD&D, out of print and it will take a bit of searching, but it's well worth it).
In conclusion, The Lost Library of Cormanthyr will provide for a fair amount of entertainment though it could have been so much better. 3 Stars
The author purposefully provides room for a sequel, though I am not sure there is a demand for it (at this point it's been years since the book was published and I do not believe the sequel ever materialized).

According to Edgar Cayce (1877-1945), the most-documented psychic of our time, the Bible is a sourcebook for spiritual development that applies to every facet of our lives. Beginning with the story of Genesis and the creation of souls and culminating with the promises of Jesus and The Revelation, you will discover the powerful plan that has been in place since the Beginning—a plan set in motion to restore humanity’s fallen consciousness to its true heritage as spiritual beings.

Inspiring & Comprehensive Look at Edgar Cayce & the Scriptures!
By Barbara Graver
"Edgar Cayce's Story of the Bible" by Edgar Cayce scholar and ordained minister, Robert Krajenke, provides a comprehensive and very readable look at both Edgar Cayce and the scriptures.

Most people are familiar with the great American psychic, Edgar Cayce, and he is generally well known both as a medical intuitive and a metaphysician. Less well known, however, is Cayce's connection with Judea-Christian philosophy and his dedication to the study of the bible.

Reading the bible once for each year of his life, Cayce came from a traditional Christian background and started out on his spiritual journey with traditional Christian beliefs.

Later in adulthood, however, during his psychic trance readings, Cayce began to provide clients with information well outside the norm of traditional Christian teachings and this is where the story of Edgar Cayce and the bible gets particularly interesting.

The information contained in Cayce's own psychic readings (as author Robert Kranjenke explained to me on this week's New Age Review Radio Show) was a source of some conflict to the waking Edgar Cayce. A conflict eventually resolved as Cayce grew in spirit over the course of his life until, as Kranjenke explained, the waking Cayce drew closer and closer to the state of higher consciousness he attained in trance.

And it is this theme of spiritual evolution which I found fundamental to "Edgar Cayce's Story of the Bible."

The book draws from three primary sources: Edgar Cayce's psychic life readings, which often described the past lives of the individual's being read, Cayce's lectures and bibles notes, and Krajenke's own biblical scholarship. The life reading information used in the book focused on readings done for individuals who had previous incarnations during biblical times.

Krajenke has done a wonderful job of researching and presenting the past life material contained in the readings - material which is essentially new information on the bible, providing a first person look at scripture not available from more traditional sources.

This perceptive allows us to track the incarnations and spiritual evolution of biblical figures through the scriptures - a sequence which Robert Krajenke explained quite movingly during his radio interview as well as in the pages of "Edgar Cayce's Story of the Bible."

The inclusion of the life reading information in "Edgar Cayce's Story of the Bible," coupled with Cayce's (and Krajenke's) wide biblical knowledge base, provides some wonderful insights on the scriptures. Also, as the book addresses the entire Tanakh, also known as the Hebrew bible or Old Testament, from beginning to end, it is a valuable aide to increased appreciation of the scope and sequencing of the biblical texts.

And I recommend the book highly for all of these reasons.

It was the theme of spiritual evolution voiced throughout "Edgar Cayce's Story of the Bible" however which I found most inspiring. It is not hard to imagine that if the great characters of the bible can grow in spirit over through the long cycle of death and rebirth, that we lesser humans can do so as well. And this is a message well worth remembering.

Most unique literature in existence.
By James Hernandez
Edgar Cayce's material is the most unique literature on planet Earth. While you can find 1 million and 1 books on these subjects by a plethora of authors wearing wispy clothing, staring up at some artificial light-source, creating an image to sell their books because the material won't sell itself. Edgar Cayce's books could come with plain brown, paper covers because the material within his books sells itself.

The difference between Cayce and say, a "Sylvia Browne" is that Cayce spent years creating a credible foundation of knowledge by curing people of 100's if not 1,000's of ailments, always displaying a deeper wisdom not found in the "one size fits all" modern, medical field. No other so-called "psychic" has that kind of credibility as a foundation, because for Cayce that was apparently only the BEGINNING. He went on to provide priceless wisdom to humanity when he turned his attention to spiritual matters and mysteries that continue to plague those still in the darkness.

Today Edgar Cayce heals thousands daily of the deadliest plague known to humanity throughout all of time: Ignorance.

For me personally, all I need is my AMORC (Rosicrucian) traning and this supplemental Cayce literature. Another rare trait of Cayce is that his literature is the only "public literature" that agrees 100% with the Secret Teachings of All Ages. His credibility is layers deep, but as it has been given:
"Seeing they do not see, hearing, they do not understand."

If you can see through the veil, count your blessings and right your House. Others may do as they may, but as for me and my House, we will serve the living God.

What and incredible man !
By Down to Earth Thinking
I just ordered the book and few others . I have just about completed my reading of the Cayce works and have started the Nag Hammadi Scriptures which was inspired by the readings of the Cayce works! Ponder this ? The dead Sea scrolls and the Nag Hammadi were both found within months of each other in 1945 to 47 so Cayce could NOT have seen their contents as they were not fully translated or actually released to the public until much later. Cayce died in 1947. So the timing of it all is definitely NOT a coincidence. These ancient scrolls of much truth, that actually do tell a slightly different story than the KJV, pop up after 1600 + years being buried and lost . Then at the same time a man comes along who could actually interpret it all far better than anyone prior, and at the same time in history ? Both Cayce shows up and all the ancient text ? This was and still is shouting at me and I am certain it is all interconnected ! If anyone else out there has any more definitive info please contact me email stephen@downtoearththinking.com I certainly will be checking out Cayces thoughts on the Gnostics and the Essenes. what an incredible man ! He was sent to us all for a reason, which means we were born to receive his messages. Incredible.

4TH EDITION IS SURE TO BE A CLASSIC
By CSDMARY
I have used the earlier editions of this book for several years. This new edition is a significant improvement. It goes beyond the major cultural groups in the United States and gives a global view of communication disorders intervention and treatment in cultural groups around the world. The new authors include scholars from around the world including Australia, Malta, Brazil. Given that the profession is more global and international, this textbook is unique and a welcome addition to the available literature. Of particular importance is the chapter on voice disorders and also the chapters on language development and indigenous groups because of their global focus. The chapter on global issues in hearing impairment is quite comprehensive and authoritative. References and resources are up to date. It is nicely written and the cover design in striking.

Amazon.com Review
Peggy Vaughn, who's been featured on Oprah! and CNN, has helped thousands of folks recover from affairs. As the extramarital-affairs expert behind AOL's "Ask Peggy" forum and as a woman who's been married for 40 years to her high school sweetheart--who cheated on her for seven years while she kidded herself that he was remaining faithful--she certainly knows what she's talking about. She says that to successfully overcome an unfaithful spouse or companion, you have to work through the myths of monogamy. It's not just men, or men who travel a lot on business, or women with supermodel good looks, who cheat. It's people of all ages, all occupations: from pastors to postal workers to, well, presidents. In other words, everyone is at risk for betraying or being betrayed.

Studies conservatively estimate, Vaughan reveals, that 60 percent of men and 40 percent of women will have an affair. "These figures are even more significant when we consider the total number of marriages involved, since it's unlikely that all the men and women having affairs happen to be married to each other," she says. "If even half the women having affairs (or 20 percent) are married to men not included in the 60 percent having affairs, then at least one partner will have an affair in approximately 80 percent of all marriages."

Vaughn outlines the societal causes and supporters of affairs, from the commercialization of sex in every visible nook and cranny of our world to our lifelong tendency to surround sex with secrecy. She also lists the common desperate measures that people take when they suspect they're being cheated on, and why they don't work. (Vaughn herself resorted to becoming a gourmet cook, wearing sexy underwear, and acting like a sex fiend in bed, all to no avail.) She also tells what to expect during a confrontation, and includes copious techniques for rebuilding self-esteem. There's also information about how to choose a marriage counselor or group therapist and, even more important, when to stop seeing one. For couples--especially those with children--debating whether to divorce or remain married, there's plenty of proven guidance to be found here. --Erica Jorgensen

This book was terrible...It made me so angry I actually threw it away.
Basic premise seems to be that a cheating spouse is not to blame for their
behavior. It provides all sorts of 'society made him do it' nonsense. I was looking for a book that would help me to heal and somehow rebuild my marriage with my husband after discovering his long term affair with my best friend. I suppose different people may find it helpful but I found it to be completely worthless in that regard.

Horrific Read
By txmom
I got this book thinking it would help me come to terms with husband's recent unfaithfulness. The book did nothing but anger me. I read almost to the end and realized the book was creating more stress for me. It was not because I was reliving anything but the pure and simple BS. Since when is a person not responsible for their own actions. I am not saying that I didn't help the situation but really.....you want to blame society. That does not fly with me. A person should behave with morals and if you don't have any, then marriage may not be for you. Monogamy should not be considered a myth. I am not saying that one cannot overcome what occurred, but this book is just letting you forgive based on society made your partner do it. I quit reading when the book told me that. This is the perfect book for the cheater. In which the authors are married and the husband did stray. I'd say that he did a wonderful job by writing a book with his spouse and completing his I'm sorry, I was wrong, I love you, Society made me do it BS. Grow up and deal with the consequences of YOUR actions.

Our life together is better than ever!
By Carol T.
It has been nearly three years since my partner's affair, and it is only after the full process of healing, and all the stages and setbacks that go along with it, that I choose to write an outstanding review. Not only was this book helpful, but all of Peggy Vaughn's online resources are helpful as well. Every situation is different, and every person is different. Some betrayed partners may be incapable of letting go of the anger and bitterness. And some betrayers do not deserve or earn another chance. If you are in a position where this terrible, but sadly common, tragedy has touched your relationship, but you wish to rebuild trust and you and your partner are both ready and willing to work - this book and others with a similar approach and content WILL help you get there! It's not easy, it's not quick, but for us it has worked and been worthwhile. I am not being trite or naive when I say, quite honestly, that our relationship is stronger than ever. Our marriage was only a couple years old when this happened, but now I have high hopes for our future.

A well written book but not memorable. Culturally strong with great NZ Maori observations mixed with classic art . Light weight story disjointed and sometimes difficult to follow on the Kindle.
