Wells Here and now!
The peoples who inhabited Europe during the two millennia before the Roman conquests had established urban centers, large-scale production of goods such as pottery and iron tools, a money economy, and elaborate rituals and ceremonies. Yet as Peter Wells argues here, the visual world of these late prehistoric communities was profoundly different from those of ancient Rome's literate civilization and today's industrialized societies. Drawing on startling new research in neuroscience and cognitive psychology, Wells reconstructs how the peoples of pre-Roman Europe saw the world and their place in it. He sheds new light on how they communicated their thoughts, feelings, and visual perceptions through the everyday tools they shaped, the pottery and metal ornaments they decorated, and the arrangements of objects they made in their ritual places--and how these forms and patterns in turn shaped their experience.
How Ancient Europeans Saw the World offers a completely new approach to the study of Bronze Age and Iron Age Europe, and represents a major challenge to existing views about prehistoric cultures. The book demonstrates why we cannot interpret the structures that Europe's pre-Roman inhabitants built in the landscape, the ways they arranged their settlements and burial sites, or the complex patterning of their art on the basis of what these things look like to us. Rather, we must view these objects and visual patterns as they were meant to be seen by the ancient peoples who fashioned them.

"The past is a foreign country"
By ChimChim
I love Peter Wells' books. At times they can be a bit dry, especially if you're only superficially interested in archaeology, but they are always accessible. Wells presents archaeological interpretation in a way that is easy for anyone to understand but not dumbed-down.
In my experience, the average modern-day person has this notion that people are people and our bodies and senses work the same way now as they did back then, and the same as everyone else alive today, so the lives and concerns of ancient people didn't differ from ours too much.
But as L.P. Hartley once wrote (and archaeologists love to repeat), "The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there."
Recent archaeological and anthropological investigation is revealing that people's engagement with the world through their body and senses varies considerably by culture, even though the "wiring" of the brain and the anatomy of the body is the same. Furthermore, the environment was very different--in our time we accept an abundance of bright colors, sparkly metals, electric lighting, and written words as so normal that we don't even notice them, but your average prehistoric European had none of these. Imagine, then, their tremendous impact in the lives of those that encountered, say, gold coins or brightly-colored clothes.
Wells looks at representations from prehistoric Europe and considers how the ancients saw their world--what they looked at, what we can guess about how it appeared to them, what they chose to represent in art, and what all that says about their worldview and their daily lives. It's a thought-provoking analysis that reveals a past we've never imagined before.

Inexplicably riveting
By Suzanne Pen
I found this book inexplicably fascinating, sort of like a John le Carre novel. True, it's a very slow read full of seemingly insignificant details whose precise appeal is hard to explain. They are somehow appealing nonetheless. I related snippets of the book to my husband for weeks, doling them out bits at a time. He hasn't divorced me yet.
An oddity of the book is that Wells doesn't even bother mentioning what I'd call big ideas until the last chapter or two.

Incredible Insight
By Peter J. Piaseckyj
This can be a book for the very interested and curious reader. It is scholarly and very informative. One has to but admire how the author was able to create a narrative based only on material objects. I was overwhelmed by the investigative techniques and the years of study required to be able to use these anthropological analytic tools.
The book was difficult but well worth the effort for any one interested in the prehistoric material and psychological culture of European people.
