Maimonides and Spinoza

I happen to be a big fan of Joshua Parens since I read his first book on Al Farabi. In this book, he seeks to disabuse us of the notion that Maimonides' "philosophy" and Spinoza's philosophy is similar. Instead, he seeks to show us the seemless seam that separates them and their views of human nature.
It is an extremely difficult book since it primarily analyzes Maimonides' Guide and Spinoza's Ethics. (I know that I have only scratched the surface of it.) One could spend a lifetime in each book to untangle the web both authors created to hide their true teaching. It is simply amazing that Joshua Parens appears to have mastered both as well as their contemporaries who shed light on the manner of their teachings.
For those who are friendly to the way that Leo Strauss reads texts, this book is also important since it focuses on The Ethics rather that the Tractatus. Joshua Parens is respectful in showing how he learned to read The Ethics through a little read essay by by Richard Kennington. He also gives a nod to David Lachterman. Both these men are important thinkers in their own right. Their memory should be esteemed and not lost to oblivion.
Almost all people know the platitude that "ideas have consequences". Joshua Parens gives flesh to it. For me, he clearly shows how Spinoza has shrunk both how the human soul is viewed ("conatus": endeavor) and how God is viewed (laws of nature: bodies moving through space and at rest). Baldly stated, God is material and not transcendent and clearly not providential or worthy of worship and man only seeks self-preservation.
I clearly would like to sit in on a class.

Very Relatable and Motivational

I've read Kim's other books 'How To Talk To Your Angels' and 'Bond With Your Baby Before Birth'. Her writing style is candid and personable and 'The Calling' has the same warmth and emotional depth as well.

If you have never read her other books (I recommend them all, just be prepared to stay up late a few nights in a row:) this one is a great place to start. I feel like we can all learn something from each other and usually I can find one or two things I can take away from the life story of even a stranger. But Kim's memoir is a bit different: She experienced harrowing, humbling things in her life but was able to get feedback and instruction (when she 'got out of her own way', as her angel John Reid would say:)
from The Other Side. Her angel shared insights with Kim to help her have faith things would get better and even temper the stressful moments with humor and love. Those same insights he shared can be used by all who read this heartfelt book.

Throughout her dysfunctional childhood, emotionally abusive first marriage and starting her life's work with nothing but hope and grit Kim often felt overwhelmed, helpless and absolutely alone. The day she 'saw' her angel John (in her living room, while she was eating Chinese take out!) she realized she wasn't alone at all. Or ever. Did her life magically get better when her angel showed up? No! Our angels are here to comfort and guide. They also help us when we ask them for help and 'get out of the way' by paying attention to the signs we're being given. We are all here to learn life lessons after all. As Kim's angel said to her 'earth is the hardest bootcamp after all'. And how!

What this book made me realize is that yes, even if we are not feeling like we have any support, or things are miserably off course in our lives, we not only aren't alone, but we have constant, loving guidance from our angels. Oh, and regarding that 'Woe is me my life is off track' sentiment; sometimes when you hit numerous 'road blocks' on the path to something you really want it's really a way of saying you aren't supposed to be on that path at all.
John shared this insight with Kim when she was tirelessly searching for a new home and kept hitting every snag possible. Finally..she let go of the need to control, listened to her instincts and things opened up for her.

I really appreciated her sharing such personal information and I think it makes this book so relatable and genuine. There are no generalizations or sweeping new age 'woo woo' statements here. The personal anecdotes all have underlying lessons we can use for our own lives.

Most of us can't 'see' our angels like a professional channel can, true. But those angels are still there, waiting for us to begin the dialogue. They never leave us even when we refuse all instincts and hunches we *think* are really our own. Kim's book was not just a memoir but a comforting reassurance to know none of us ever have to feel stuck, unloved or hopeless. The personal stories interweaved with practical life lessons resonated so much with me.

Oh, and I have no idea who my angel is but I have to say John Reid (Kim's) is pretty neat. I loved the dialogue and relationship they have.

A good follow up to this book is the 'How To Talk To Your Angels' if you haven't read that one yet. Once you are aware of your angels existing very much engaged (as Kim's is) in your life you will find yourself wanting to learn the simple steps to open up and listen for their input. Happy reading!

This was a very interesting story. Even if a reader is not a fan of psychics, Kim's book is so much more. The reader will learn about Kim, including her past, through vivid and detailed scenes. More likely than not, the reader will find it easy to connect to and sympathize with Kim. Kim found her angel right when she needed him most, she did no have the easiest childhood. The way Kim writes about John Reid, her angel, is literally reverently. John Reid's character is very interesting and fits the bill for a guardian angel.

The book will help a reader realize that he/she is not alone, even in the worst of time. Angels are not with us to make all of the situations immediately better, they are more of a guiding force, if anything. Kim struggles through her abilities and discovering John makes it better, but she must still learn and discover mainly on her own. The reader may have reservations about what is truly going on in the book, but will be able to make up his/her own mind...nothing is forced on the reader. Overall, this book is recommended to adult readers, particularly those who enjoy spiritual books.

Loved it! I could hardly put this book down once I picked it up! Heartwarming & genuine, she's a real Angel on Earth.

Kim's a great writer. She knows how to make you laugh and then she can bring you to tears with her real life stories. You will love reading her book as she retells her life story. I simply could hardly put it down for the 4 days it took me to read it. She holds nothing back as she recounts the events of her life that got her where she is today. Anyone this candid and authentic should be applauded. I felt very connected to her, almost like I was her while reading it. She shares her fears, and insecurities, you see she is just human like us. Human with an extraordinary gift. I am glad she listened to her guidance, and is following her passion, which is to live an authentic spiritually based life, which includes a life of helping others! Her readings are spot on, I would recommend Kim's work, and this book to anyone who dares to become great, despite their fears and insecurities. Love her!!!

G. B. Trudeau has been drawing his Pulitzer Prize-winning comic strip for more than forty years. In addition to cartooning, Trudeau has worked in theater, film, and television. He also has been a contributing columnist for the New York Times op-ed page and later an essayist for Time magazine. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Duke is at it again!

This book is excellent for anyone who loves Zonker's uncle Duke. The former ambassador runs for president in this hillarious book. Its worth the money.

"It should've been me, it should've been me!"

This Doonesbury book takes us back a bit.It starts around May of 1999 and ends with the strip of May 13,2000.What a year it was. Events were a little unfocused ,then we see Thudpucker reviving his career with Net Aid, the gay marriage of Mark and Chase,Mike enters the business world of a Dot Com company,Zip goes to college ; but things all get focused when Duke decides to enter politics with his own Reform party ,with a platform of

Compassionate Fascism;and starts a campaign to run for President.

It's hard to believe that this was 6 years ago. Can you believe it;Dubya with the help of Scull and Crossbones beat out the Duke despite the backing of Mr. Butts and the tobacco industry . With all the other wannabees really never in contention. If there was anything that might have produced a different outcome; all I can think is that Duke erred when he passed up Honey for his "Arm Candy".

What I really enjoy about these books is reading them several years after the stripts; boy,don't they bring back the memories.

I have only one complaint,though,the use of black and white just doesn't do the artwork justice.

This book really emphazises how unpredictible even 6 years can be. Who could ever have imagined 9/11,The War on Terror,Dubya getting re-elected over Kerry ,who wasn't even on the radar screen.Then the demise of the great HST ,his blast off into space .And now ,the biggest issue of all;how to deal with 12 million illegal immigrants. Heck,6 years ago,that issue couldn't even get a dozen lines in some border weekly newspaper.

The pundits are all talking about Condi vs Hillary;n but it could very well be someone like Al Sharpton vs some Mex.American from

Cain's great State of Arizona and with the right running mate,wake up ,Ms.Huan is still available. And this time no Campaign Headquarters in Coon Rapids MN; put it anywhere on the border with Mexico.Keep it moving and if its on a river bed,just keep an eye out for flash floods.

Hey,if you think this is crazy,take a stab at it. I got a feeling "You ain't seen nothing yet."...Keep tuned!

Err... I mean Uncle Duke for President. This time -- why not the worst? Compassionate fascism!?!? Isn't that, more or less, what we got in the last election? It almost seems like Uncle Duke was elected -- a former drug abusing wack job.
What a country.
This book is the best of the post-1980 Doonesbury books. It is good to see that Trudeau hasn't grown tired of his HST knockoff. He is a true American Orginal... and the Trudeau take on Raoul Duke is classic.

She's also an unwilling thief who's sworn never to steal again.
Then she's suddenly drawn into a twisting plot of double-crossings and betrayals. At the center of it all, an artifact of great power - the Alabaster Staff.
This engaging novel is three parts fantasy, one part murder mystery. It's reminiscent of a 'Who-dunnit' thriller, and has you guessing until the end. The characters are believable yet surprising, and the author has made the protagonist not only realistic, but refreshingly moral-minded, a virtuous rogue who struggles with her own reluctant vocation. I found myself identifying with her more than most characters in the Forgotten Realms series. The book breaks down some of the archtypes normally associated with certain character classes, such as priests, warriors, and of course, rogues.
You don't have to be a fan of the Forgotten Realms to enjoy this book, but it certainly helps. Set in the oppressed and occupied nation of Unther (a land previously unexplored in Realms novels, to my knowledge), it's a new landscape with a few familiar goodies tossed in as well. It's a fast read, inspiring, and not to mention full of really cool stuff. Did I not mention the cool stuff? Well...go read it then!

A great start to The Rogues series!

This book is an absolute gem, recommended for all Forgotten Realms and fantasy fans.
I'm a long-time fan of the Realms novels, and in my opinion this is the best for ages! The first novel in The Rogues series, this book focuses on Kehrsyn, a young and reluctant thief who is required to live off her wits and skills when forced into an unfortunate situation that spirals out of control.
Maybe the premise is nothing particularly new, but the execution is wonderful. Edward Bolme understands the characters he writes about completely, and each has a beautifully fleshed-out personality (and agenda)!
Starting slowly and deliberately, and building up to a thunderous, fast-paced climax, this story left me wanting much more than its 309 pages could provide. Here's hoping for further exploits of the characters and setting involved.
A fantastic and refreshing change from all the Drow and `Event' series!

What a damn fine novel

I am an avid reader of D&D Shared world novels, especially Forgotten Realms. I have lost count now how many novels I have read in total. But believe me when I say this that 'The Alabaster Staff' is one of the finest novels that you will read in recent times.

I was really dubious about the Rogues series as, first of all, that character class has never been one I have enjoyed. After reading this I am ready to roll up a new character sheet.

One of the really good things about the main character in this novel, Kehrsyn, is that she is not coming across as your typical rogue. Certainly not your master thief, which are normally portrayed in D&D based fiction. She is more a rogue, borne out of circumstance. For this reason you find her a lot more believable.

She is a character that also stays consistent throughout the story. The person that she is at the start, is basically the person she is at the end of the book, regardless of what she has been through.

The other characters in the book are wildly varied, from the straight talking Demok, to the lavishly scripted Massedar (who in my opinion is one of the best written characters, in term of dialogue, I have ever read).

It is a rollercoaster of a ride, a book I could not put down. The last few chapters were filled with energy and I just kept on turning those pages until I hit the back cover.

If you only have money to buy one realms novel, and you are looking at this book then do not hesitate and buy it now, you will not be dissapointed.

Edward Bolme has an Eberron novel coming out later this year, which I am eager to read (Orb of Xoriat) and I think that his name is one we should all watch out for in the future!
