Great book and excellent sequel!

Great book! I have enjoyd reading this book very much.But if you haven't read the previous one (Crypt of the Shadowking) y recommend you to read it, becouse it's as good as this one.
The plot here is placed in time sortly after Crypt of the Shadowmage. The plot is great, and, even when you can see what is happening, you don't know for sure how it is going to end. The Quest for find ...ejem.."something" (I can't say it here, sorry, you'll understand when you read it ;P ) is not long and with some surprise, and maybe you can guess how it will end and maybe. II didn't guess when I readed it but, I was to deep inside the book reading it, that I wasn't thinking of what will happen or how will it end.
The characters are also good. The only dissapoint I have is with Kellen. Ok, he is lovely, but, for my taste, he is a bit perfect, knows everything and is thinking in things a child of his age wouldn't think. He must have been playing instead of saving the world, but even with this, the book is great.
Buy it, and judge yourself, is the best I can say.

"Behold the King of Shadows"

Curse of the Shadowmage is the eleventh book in the Forgotten Realms Harpers series and the sequel to the Crypt of the Shadowking. Caledan Caldorien finds himself trying to overcome the same curse that has afflicted his ancestor eons ago. Mari Al'maren, together with several of Caledan's old adventuring companions from the Fellowship of the Dreaming Dragon, and some new allies, set out to save their friend.

Slightly better than the first book, Curse of the Shadowmage is very well written, with the reader feeling that they have been transported to another universe and are actually present among the characters, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, sensing what they sense.

On the negative side, ENOUGH with the author portraying the Harpers as being oppressive, twisting the arms of their members and making them carry out their instructions while suppressing their free will etc! Last time I checked, the Harpers were the heroes keeping the Realms from falling under the sway of Evil! K'shar, who in the end, supposedly "saw the light" and turned stag is portrayed as the "hero" who "breaks free" of the Harpers (???). Is there something wrong with the picture here? All right, let's do away with hierarchy and the chain of command, and have the agents vote whether they want to take a specific assignment!!! That will work...

Moreover, the Shadowstar and the Shadevari are too similar to J.R.R. Tolkien's One Ring and the Nazgul respectively.

In addition, WAY too many characters are "coming back from the dead" to the point that it is getting tiring/annoying...

Furthermore, on page 309 (the last page in the book) the author states "Now Kellen was the last person in the world with shadow magic." That is just not true as Richard Baker will show in The Shadow Stone, unless that was the case for a very short period of time.

Aside from that it's a pretty good book; the plot, the writing and the characters are very well thought out and presented!

The story of the Shadevari, Azuth, and the creation of the world, along with the Shadowstar, (Pp242) is GREAT.

K'shar is a FASCINATING character who deserves a whole book (at least) all to himself.

Finaly, there is some very witty humor between Cormick and Jewel.

Other books I would recommend from the Harpers Series include Red Magic, Parched Sea, The Veiled Dragon, Elfshadow and Elfsong to mention a few.

Excellent sequel

Very entertaining! Caledan and Morhion are very intriguing characters, not to mention Kellen. I read that book in les than 2 or 3 days so much it hooked me up. Recommanded, as well as the prequel 'Crypt of the Shadowking'.

The chapters in this edited collection report on the results of a state-led effort in Massachusetts to address gang violence in several local communities, and describe the diverse efforts in six communities to use data driven, collaborative efforts to address gang violence. Gebo and Bond have done an excellent job providing a context for the separate site descriptions and the volume also includes a statewide evaluation of the implementation and outcome of the Comprehensive Gang Model. This book is a must read for practitioners, communities, and researchers who want to better understand the challenges and opportunities in responding to gang violence and may be involved in such efforts. Alfred Mahncke’s For Kaiser and Hitler rectifies this omission, providing those with an interest in the history of the German military machine with an absorbing, detailed, highly readable and evocative account of life within the Luftwaffe at senior command level.Yet Mahncke’s account is much more than that – for as he states, his is a story spanning ‘…the national autocracy of the Monarchy and the unsuccessful parliamentary democracy of the Weimar Republic, to the failed National Socialist dictatorship.’ It is also a chronicle of the very beginnings of military aviation. Mahncke was among the first German military aviators and flew with the Kaiser’s fledgling air unit in 1911, witnessing and experiencing the exhilaration – and dangers – of flying in some of the earliest military planes. He met the Kaiser, the German Crown Prince and various members of the Imperial royal family, as well as Hindenburg and many prominent German political and military figures. He flew in an early Zeppelin airship. By the outbreak of the First World War, Mahncke was an experienced pilot and he flew subsequently over the Western and Eastern Fronts, before assuming staff positions in France and Russia where he controlled tactical air operations. He went on a dive in a German U-boat in 1915 and later traveled to Palestine. He also suffered, and describes in highly graphic and emotional terms, the carnage and horror of the trench warfare on the Western Front in 1917.In the ‘dark years’ of the interwar period following in the wake of the Versailles Treaty, Mahncke served in senior positions with the military police and his writing offers a valuable insight into life in the Weimar Republic and of the uncomfortable rise of National Socialism and Adolf Hitler – whom he first met in 1933 – from the viewpoint of the German conservative middle classes and the military. He met Charles Lindbergh and attended the controversial 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin as well as the Nuremberg rallies where he shared a podium with the Führer.In 1935, he joined the fledgling Luftwaffe, experiencing – from his position as overseer and champion of air sport in the Third Reich – at firsthand the politics, personalities and measures of stealth used to rebuild German air power under Nazi control. He witnessed, and describes vividly, the emergence of an awesome – but not flawless – new force in aviation and its eventual deployment in Hitler’s invasion of Russia in June 1941, culminating in the drive into the Caucasus and Crimea and the advance on the Volga. Mahncke was deeply involved in Luftwaffe operations at Stalingrad and later in the Kuban in 1943, before moving to Italy, where he coordinated the desperate German air defense of Sicily ahead of the slow, tenacious defense and ultimate retreat through the Italian mainland throughout 1943 and 1944.Mahncke met and worked with Göring, Udet, Milch, Kesselring, Jeschonnek, von Richthofen and many other senior commanders of the Luftwaffe and German armed forces. Having already dipped in and out of the book for the purposes of this brief review I can report that Mahncke's memoir is a well-written, fresh and fascinating account from a Luftwaffe General that deals primarily with the pre-war rise of the Luftwaffe and the re-building of German air power under Nazi control. Over the first 70 pages Mahncke describes his flying career during the Great War; operations in France, Palestine and the Russian Front are covered. The chapters entitled 'The Dark Years' cover in a very neutral tone German political life between the wars - Mahncke offers little if any comment on Hitler's rise to power while sympathising with former WWI ace and Richthofen Geschwader commander Hermann Goering's need to create a police force " not bound by legal niceties "..I suspect the most interesting section of the book for many readers will be Mahncke's involvement in the war against Russia (from page 150) with new insights into the Luftwaffe's defeat in the East and in Italy. His accounts of the chaos of the Stalingrad re-supply operation and the 'fighting' withdrawal through Sicily and Italy which Mahncke directly managed are particularly interesting. Scooting around the front from hot-spot to hot-spot in a Stork liaison aircraft Mahncke is also an adept avaitor, even getting himself shot down over Sicily. I think the book works less well when the author reports on events that he was not implicitly involved in. He also admits to having lost his diaries covering the period from November 1944, but this amounts to only some 30 pages at the end of the book and is pretty minor league criticism. Recommended !

The other side

Anybody who is a student of WW2 will find this book a useful insight into the mind of a high-ranking, non Nazi, officer. Mahncke, a pioneer of the luftwaffe, was, nevertheless, a dedicated German.
His story is an excellent and fascinating read.
One learns of the full extent of Goering's incompetence and how naive - and, well, plain stupid - was Hitler in trusting him after the Battle of Britain.
It is also interesting to learn how an officer (and, I supppose, a gentleman) of high rank was treated for years after hostilities ended.

Worth reading

Just finishe this book last month and could not put it down. This book coveres an early pioneer in aviation from WW1 to WW2 and his operational career in the German Air Force. The part that I found must interesting was his command of german force training italian force at the end of the war. His operational conduct during many of his career moves are worth studing. This General rose rapidly in rank with each command he under took.

A touching novel about loyalty and courage

I started Call Down Thunder expecting to read an action-filled mystery written for the young adult generation but about 40 pages in I realised this was going to be something entirely different. All in all, this book for me was like a roller coaster ride. My initial reaction was that this was not my cup of tea, after all. I found the way people talked irritating, and the story quite slow-paced and I was starting to feel discouraged. But since I'm patient and don't like to quit, I kept on reading and how glad I am for that! Because once I got used to how people talk and got to know them a little bit better, I couldn't put the book down.

As I mentioned, if you're looking for a gut-wrenching action novel you'll be just as surprised as I initially was. The first half of the story introduces us to Reve's life and what he has to go through every single day to protect himself and Mi. We get to know Tomas, who looked after them after their father died and their mother left the village, and all their enemies. For Reve and Mi might be young, but regular fights and hostility are not unknown to them. I found this bit quite long-winded and slow but once the siblings leave the village in order to track down their mother, I started to really enjoy the story. Reve is a brilliant character who changes a lot by the end of the story. I love his courage, his loyalty and the fact that he's always there to protect Mi or people who need help - and he's only a kid. I love how he cling to his loved ones but eventually, he learns how to let go.

All in all, I enjoyed this book. If you like young adult fiction and you're patient enough, I think you'll enjoy it too. It might take a while for you to get into the story but it'll be worth it in the end. It's a touching novel about trust, loyalty, courage and family, spiced up with mysteries and great character development.

MY REVIEW
I received an paperback of this book from Macmillan in exchange for my honest review and opinion on the book.
I like the title and how it is displayed on the paperback. The phrase "Call Down Thunder" is used in describing the special voices that Mi can call forth. I also like the byline "At the eye of the storm you discover the truth..." it's quite cryptic, yet does fit the story line of the book really well. You will know what I mean when you read the book yourself.
I will say that this book is somewhat of a "slow burner" at the beginning and I really did find the way how the characters spoke irritating until I got engrossed into the plot of the book. Then once the speed picks up, it goes on at a decent pace.
I loved the way how Mi just "knew" things, and there's a funny part where Reve thinks Mi has used her "powers" when she hasn't, in fact there happens to be an obvious explanation for what happens. The book tells us about the village of Rinconda, and those that seek to exploit the villagers too. It tells us some of the story of "Sante Fe" who is Mi and Reve's runaway mother. We learn the truth of how her husband, Mi and Reve's father died.
I don't want to say much more as I don't wish to give away too much of the book. How to describe the experience of reading this book has been difficult, as it's not a light read, it has depth and requires you to stick with it and work your way through the incidents in the book. Having said that, I am not saying I didn't enjoy it as I did like it.
So did I like the BK? I did enjoy the book once I was caught by the story line. I think this book could be read by adults as well as teens. Will there be a BK 2.....not sure possibly because we don't learn "Santa Fe's" full story of how she ended up like she has. Also a second bk could feature Reve putting into action some of changes he would like to see in his village. Would I read a BK 2? Yes I would.Would I recommend this BK? Yes..to the experienced, more serious reader.

It is the argument of this book that both Keynes and Hayek developed their respective theories of the business cycle within the tradition of Swedish economist Knut Wicksell, and that this shared genealogy manifested itself in significant theoretical affinities between the two supposed antagonists. The salient features of Wicksell's work, namely the importance of money, the role of uncertainty, coordination failures, and the element of time in capital accumulation, all motivated the Keynesian and Hayekian theories of economic fluctuations. They also contributed to a fundamental convergence between the two economists during the 1930s. This shared, "Wicksellian" vision of economic problems points to a very different research agenda from that of the Walrasian-style, general equilibrium analysis that has dominated postwar macroeconomics.

This book will appeal to economists interested in historical perspective of their discipline, as well as historians of economic thought. The author not only deconstructs some of the historical misconceptions of the Keynes versus Hayek debate, but also suggests how the insights uncovered can inform and instruct modern theory. While much of the analysis is technical, it does not assume previous knowledge of 1930s economic theory, and should be accessible to academics and graduate students with general economics training.

The views of Hayek and Keynes on Uncertainty are fundamentally different

The fundamental difference that separates the two and can't be bridged is how Keyes and Hayek viewed uncertainty. For Keynes, uncertainty is an inverse function of the weight of the evidence. A complete information, data, and evidence set is required for uncertainty to be eliminated.Howeer, this is not possible in the social sciences and economics in general. Only in the physical and life sciences do you approach complete information and evidence sets. Therefore , there will always be missing information, data, or evidence that an entrepreneur will have to face.
Hayek,on the other hand,viewed uncertainty as a situation where each entrepreneur had a small piece of the relevant evidence. However, he then claimed that market prices concentrated all of the tiny, individual, dispersed pieces of evidence so that sharp, alert ,smart, and savvy entrepreneurs would be able to make the optimal choices.Uncertainty was eliminated in the aggregate by market prices so long as there was no government interference in the economy.
The author is unaware of this fundamental difference between Keynes and Hayek .Shackle, correctly, deserted Hayek in the 1930's because he recognized that Hayek's major argument was incorrect. Unfortunately ,Shackle failed to grasp that Keynes had already solved the problem of correctly modeling uncertainty by the use of interval valued probability ,based on Boole's original analysis in 1854,in his A Treatise on Probability.
This deficiency severely impacts the value of the author's argument

Possibly a landmark book!

This book is brilliant and outstanding. Using exceptionally lucid and engaging writing, the author, Shi-Ming Tu, builds a convincing case for a 'unified theory of the origin of cancers' on the basis of both scientific arguments and experimental and clinical data. The fundamental idea is that cancers arise from stem cells or stem-like cells which inherently have the capacity to display malignant characteristics such as dormancy, self-renewal, drug resistance, immunoresistance, heterogeneity, lack of differentiation, aneuploidy, telomerase activation, angiogenesis, hypoxia, invasion, and metastasis. Manifestation of the malignant phenotype is then determined by factors such as the specifics of the particular stem cell (eg, its position in a stem cell hierarchy), crucial mutations (which may be only a small subset of all mutations found in cancers), interactions with the microenvironmental niche, and effects of selection through therapy. Thus, aspects of developmental biology come strongly into play.

Even if the author's stem cell hypothesis ultimately proves to not be a preferred model, this book is still packed with thought-provoking and valuable insights, and I therefore very highly recommend it to clinicians and researchers, as well as patients and caregivers who have sufficient background to read medical literature.
