About the Author

Jim Flood is the author of Know the Game: Rowing. He is a tutor and assessor for indoor and outdoor rowing coaches, and works internationally to help countries raise their coaching levels to Olympic standards.

Dr Charles Simpson, a senior lecturer in Exercise & Sports Science at Oxford Brookes University, has coached for the last 16 years in the UK, USA and Australia, and received the Coach of the Year award from British Rowing in 2007.

Excellent introduction to indoor rowing (4.25*s)

The publication of this comprehensive guide to indoor rowing attests to the fact that indoor rowing is growing in popularity - not just in the US. A key reason is the standardization and computerization of the indoor rower by the Concept2 Company located in Vermont, which makes competition possible among rowers scattered across the world. In fact the national indoor rowing championships in both Britain and in Boston attract over 2000 rowers every year.

This relatively short book is both a broad and detailed look at virtually all aspects of rowing. The most important chapters are concerned with rowing technique, the physiology of rowing, and training. Other chapters discuss the history of rowing and rowing machines, the psychology of rowing, nutrition, including performance enhancers, the transference of skills and performance between on-water versus indoor rowing, and coaching techniques and requirements.

Once basics are understood, especially how to row, most important is how to train. The chapter on training defines five intensity levels; short, medium, and long training cycles; and phases of preparation, competition, and transition. These concepts are integrated into a 26 week training program. What is missing and would have been easy to include is a specific example of how to set up a training program for a person with a certain level of fitness. That example could then be extrapolated to others. The subjects of strokes per minute and setting the damper on the fan are only minimally mentioned, though they engender quite a bit of debate in the online rowing community.

What does one think about when rowing? As it turns out, people who are so-called internalizers are inclined to associative thought or task-specific, while externalizers are more inclined towards free-flowng thinking or disassociative thought. Both types of people tend to concentrate on the rowing and how they are doing when making hard efforts. The chapter on nutrition indicates that there are legal performance enhancers, caffeine for one and creatine for another. However, they work only on the margins. Of more importance is hydration and the proper mix of protein and carbohydrates.

It would be a nice addition to see information on what rowers typically wear, what injuries and conditions are peculiar to rowing, and the standard layout and conduct of indoor racing venues. The inclusion of how-to-coach sections at first seems to be an odd fit, but they do give rowers ideas about what to expect from coaching. The case studies of several successful rowing athletes, young and old, male and female, and all of them from the UK are of some interest.

All in all, this is a well put together book on rowing loaded with information. It is eminently readable. Its appeal would range from rank beginners to intermediate rowers who plan to or are already competing.

A real disappointment

The diagrams on the Kindle have too little detail to provide much help at all. Basically, one gets much more text than one could possibly need with too little useful info. I'd love to return this. A waste.

Lots of Good Info for the Beginner

We recently bought a new house that sits on about 2.5 acres and almost every year, we buy a beef cow from someone else, have it packaged and share it with family. It's a huge money saver.

Now that I have the room, I'm very interested in raising a cow of my own but wasn't sure how hard it would be or time consuming and was having a lot of doubts so I was very happy to see this book on offer.

I found lots of good information regarding what to feed them and how to take care of them. I think having one or two cows is very viable for me. The book made it seem like it wouldn't be hugely time consuming to do. Now rather than paying someone else to raise it, I'm pretty sure I could do it on my own and I know NOTHING about animals that aren't pets. I found the book to be concise and in language I could understand. I'm sure raising a herd is harder than just one but there was information within the book that you could use regardless of how many you are wanting to raise.

I also found the section on breeds of cattle to be very informative. This book goes into pretty much everything from feeding, behavior, how to prepare a pasture, etc. I was ready to call my local vet if I had any questions but after reading, found that everything I was concerned about was covered within the book, especially making sure your cow stays healthy because since they can't talk and aren't the brightest animals, how would you tell when they need something before whatever that is gets really bad and they require a vet? The book details what to watch for. I'm feeling pretty comfortable about getting my own animal after reading.

I think this book will be a very good reference after I get the animal as well. My only concern is that I will end up getting too attached because I'll be raising just one or two rather than a herd. I think it would be easier to keep an emotional distance when dealing with lots of them rather than just one but hopefully, it won't be too hard.

I'm definitely going to be keeping this for reference and would recommend to anyone who is interested in raising cattle.

Great Coverage with Helpful Tips

This book is a great resource for not only the student of agriculture, but also the curious. The requirements, benefits and responsibilities of cattle ownership get coverage in significant detail considering the size of the text. I find the overview of the process quite interesting.

The opening chapter explores the path to a life in cattle breeding, while the remaining chapters encompass what to do once there. This thorough text includes insider tips, which make the subject even more approachable.

One would certainly require formal instruction to pursue a career in cattle breeding, but "Raising Beef Cattle for Dummies" provides such deep insight into the subject that I consider it an excellent place to start.

A good book for the very very new beginner to raising cattle. Maybe for a 4-H person just getting into it. I am the wife of a rancher and thought it would be good to know more myself. Not much new here for me.

If I could I'd give it six or more stars!

The Wyvern's Spur, second in the Finder's Stone trilogy, happens to be the best of the bunch. I had trouble putting this book down, it was that good. As my subject line says I would give this one six stars, no seven, if I could! Unlike the Azure Bonds, this is less an adventure and more of a mystery. In it, we alter focus from Alias and Dragonbait to Giogi Wyvernspur.
Set in Immersea, a relatively small city deep within Cormyr, we learn early that someone has stolen a family heirloom from the Wyvernspur crypt. Who has done it and why? The answer lies buried in the past, and in the mysterious words of the crypt guardian. However, to make matters a touch more colorful, Tymora blesses us with the presence of none other than Olive Ruskettle.
While at first it would seem odd the shift in characters, from Alias to Giogi, it all comes together just in time for the third title in the series: Song of the Saurials. This will no doubt remain one of my favorite stories, in or outside of outside Realms fiction. If you can get your hands on a copy of this title do it, and do it now, you will not regret it.

Best Forgotten Realms book yet

I've read nearly every D&D-related book TSR has published, and this is still my favorite by a wide margin. It gives us an interesting glimpse into the private lives of a semi-dysfunctional wealthy family, and the secrets that they've swept under the rug. It's funny and charming, with just enough action to keep the story moving, but relaxed enough to let the reader enjoy the scenery. Let's face it - none of these books are exactly "deep" - but is good enough that I've reread it several times. Try it - I think you'll like it.

Favorite book of all D&D books

As a sequel to Azure Bonds only one major character appears in this book. But that is alright as this turned out to be a fantastic story. I did not want this story to end!! My only complaint is that the authors did not write another book using these characters. The story was unique and an all around excellent tale. Nothing lacking in this book. Would like to see a book about how Olive and Jade met up, though, which would precede this story.

Elderly Simon Marechall has spent a lifetime as an exterminator, but knows killing vermin is a young person’s game. With bodily aches and much more persuading him it is time to retire; Simon has one last commission in Cap d'Agde to complete before he hangs up his guns permanently.

When Simon becomes ill on the way to his final job, he stops in Val les Bains. He meets twentyish Bernard Ferrand as both sit on a bench. Bernard explains he is in town visiting his mom while on medical leave recovering from an accident that cost him two fingers at work. Simon hires Bernard to drive him to Cap d'Agde so he can complete his last mission though the exterminator also accepts he will die hopefully not before he closes out his last vermin contract kill.

Readers will relish the late Pascal Garnier’s graveyard humorous dark French noir. The traveling companions are an odd coupling of a dying mentor instructing his young chauffeur that exterminator and vermin have multiple connotations. Fans will enjoy their road show as nothing goes in accordance with Simon’s farewell tour plan.

Dark tale of the relationship between an aging Assassin and a simple young man. The first chapter sets up with ending and the rest is told in flashback. Brilliant.

I enjoyed reading every sentence, paragraph & page of this amazing book that was loaded with great advice for all women! I bought a copy for my sisters, daughter & girlfriend! Dilvin Yasa has a unique, humorous & honest way of explaining the uncomfortable, cringe worthy & mundane topics all mums dread discussing with their daughters and even with other women! Dilvin your book was written from the heart and expressed in a loving way only as a mother could & I can't wait for my 3 year old to grow up so that I can share this with her!
