Highly readable portrait of a fascinating woman

I learned about this book a few weeks ago when reading Paul Lendvai's book "The Hungarians," which contains a chapter on Elisabeth, due to her support of Hungary's cause within the Hapsburg empire. I wouldn't normally be too interested in a subject like this; even though I love history, I've always been rather put off by our obsession with monarchs. But she sounded like a fascinating character, so I checked out the book, and am happy that I did so.

Not really knowing much about Elisabeth herself, I didn't have any expectations regarding the book's tone or the author's stance toward her subject. After the first few chapters, it seemed as if this was going to be a sympathetic portrait; Elisabeth was married into royalty at a very young age, forced to deal with an overly controlling mother-in-law, and found herself in a highly insular, arrogant royalist society in Vienna that was critical of her insufficient aristocratic credentials. Thus, it seemed as though this would be a fairly familiar, sympathetic tale of an idealistic young women struggling against the repressive social strictures of her time.

But the author takes an increasingly critical stance towards Elisabeth as the book progresses, revealing her neglect of her two older children, her extravagant travels and hobbies, her single-minded support of Hungary at the expense of other nationalities in the empire, and her chilly relations with her husband. The book contains so many fascinating, often horrifying nuggets of information: the one that sticks in my mind is Elisabeth's "adoption" of a young black boy (the author uses the term "blackamoor," which I had to look up) as a playmate for her youngest daughter. She does it not out of any progressive ideal of racial equality, but merely to provoke the stuffy, conservative members of the Vienna court. I chuckled out loud when the author relates the lengths Elisabeth would go to avoid paying calls on Queen Victoria during her equestrian visits to England. During her lengthy travels in Greece and Italy in her later years, she would often apparently invite herself into random peasants' houses.

But this book doesn't merely contain interesting anecdotes; Hamann astutely analyzes the key political and social developments that affected Austria-Hungary during Elisabeth's life. A good biography should not only explore the psychology and motivations of its subject, but say something interesting about the broader social environment in which the subject lived, and Hamann does this superbly. As a biographer, she is critical of her subject when criticism is warranted, but sympathetic to the constraints and pressures that Elisabeth was subject to.

Finally, I've had problems before with translated books, but the translation here is excellent, and the prose flows very smoothly.

Absent Empress

A very well written, well researched book about an egnimatic persona. Her likeness adornes Vienna even today. Hotels named for her and many tourists attractions fueled by Die Kaiserin Elisabeth.

If you see the Grand Movie "Sissi" - you come away with a mythical fairytale. This book shatters that myth.

A countess says it best at the time of the suicide of the Crown Prince Rudolf. "If she had thought less of herself and more of her obligations, this tragedgy would not have happened."

The author does a great job of laying out facts and events, and backing them with historical events and private letters. My favorite are the letters and writings of her youngest daughter Valerie. It is amazing....truly amazing...how Valerie's sharp perceptions see through veils and even evolve when she recognizes the flaws in each parent. The author tries to give all perspectives that the reader comes to his or her own conclusions.

What is also wonderful in the book is the private lives of the people around Sisi, both the family and the notables of the day, and certainly Vienna itself.

Hindsight is 20 / 20 - but this is a portrait of a woman who could have done much in the shaping of the world. (at least she could have made an effort, as did Catherine the Great and Marie Antionette - each with vastly different results) If one reads closely one can see the "fin de siecle" and can see the proper course to have set the World (no less) on a kinder, less brutal course.

Sisi was not only a reluctant Empress. She was litterally an absent Empress.

Elisabeth was a woman of great charm and beauty, discipline and strong will. But she never cared for Vienna, and thus the people of Vienna never cared for her.

Well Written and Thorough

Although the style of writing is a bit dry at times, overall I liked this book because it was informative, well organized, and used competent sources. On those occasions when there were conflicting accounts of events, the author presented each one and then discussed the reasons why one account should be considered more reliable than another. The book dispels and clarifies several general assumptions concerning Empress Elisabeth. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in knowing about the details of Sisi's life and the people who had an impact on her.

A Vampire, a Werewolf and a Fae Menage

I'm not one that is generally picky about stories I read in that I don't care if its told in a first person or third person point of view, I don't care if there is the mate-bonding stuff that brings a relationship on fast or if the story has a gentle slow building romance, and I don't care whether a plot is action or character driven. But even I have a few lines drawn in the sand.

For one this one jumped right in with the sex thing faster than I've ever seen. It literally introduced the first of three narrators, Maverick, who's having a crisis because he thinks he's being put upon so is given an easy assignment to get him to rest a bit and regroup. He no sooner arrives to the place for his assignment than he scents his mate and then he literally rushes the guy, Tyler off to bed to heat up the sheets for a few days.

Then the third mate, Asterio, arrives and the drama starts. Honestly, I was so taken aback by the level of drama and pouting that Tyler displayed that my mouth literally fell open. Thirty something years old going on two more like it. It's like he got off on having the other two scrambling after him and begging even though he was supposed to be the submissive of the three. Mav got jacked up on Asterios's blood and Asterio was still struggling to process what was going on and Tyler takes this a perfect opportunity to freak out about them only caring for themselves and just using him. Eventually, he expands his rant to include all his friends in the column of people who don't understand or don't care about him. Yeah, it was just ugly. Placating and reassuring Tyler was almost the extent of this menage. I wanted to see Mav and Asterio have a connection too, but it was barely there.

The plot was kind of all over the place for me too. First, its about the three becoming mates, then its a quick demon attack, then its the fae intro to earth and Tyler showing off his great werewolf skills, then its Tyler's confrontation with his former alpha and in between are copious amounts of sex between the threesome. There are loose ends that I assume will be picked up in the next book.

So, it was not a story that I found more than okay though I did find aspects of it enjoyable like the characters Mav, Asterio and the Queen and I found the exciting parts of the plot like the demon attack and the rogue wolf attack pretty good. You'll want to read it if you're a fan of the series.

Not a standalone - read as part of the series

Maverick Danker is the story of former vampire head of security for Caleb (A Caleb Foot Long, The O'Hagan Way # 2) who is depressed because everyone around him has seemed to find love with their mates. He's just celebrated his 2,000th birthday and he has yet to find his. All of that changes when he meets Tyler, a wolf shifter, and Asterio a fae. Let's start with Tyler. Tyler is a strong, yet submissive wolf shifter who has endured torture from his captors and then his alpha and their inner circle. He's ashamed because he's into BDSM and various other forms of kink that he doesn't think anyone will understand. He's having a hard time understanding himself and it's because of this, he considers himself a freak that is unworthy of love. When he meets Maverick, he runs. Maverick probes his mind, understands what he needs and gives it to him. They both meet Asterio, a fae warrior who has crossed over from the fae plane into the earth plane. Asterio is innocent in the sense that he is new to all the things on the earth plane. He has to adjust to a new way of living and having two mates. These three try to make their mating work, but there are obstacles that they must overcome in order for that to happen. This story is a pretty good follow up to the Marius Brothers series. This author is hit or miss with me. I will give her credit: she does a great job of maintaining her storylines. She's able to keep her characters in order and pick up right where she left off when writing a next installment in her series. She'll either write a story that is really, really good or write one that is really, really, bad. It's really, really good in this case. Pretty much all of the books in the Beyond the Marius Brothers series are good. In fact, it's better than the original series. The writing is clear, the storylines are great and the dialog is mature; the dialog among the guys in this series isn't adolescent. I liked this book a lot. The sex is still gratuitous, but not as much. I would recommend this book, but I must warn you: it is part of a series, and can't be read as a standalone if you want to understand the events in this story.

In my opinion this was personally the best book in the series, if you enjoy a good werewolf love book this is the one to read! you wont ever want to put it down until your finish and then you'll want to pick it back up again and read it a second or third time!

In 2008 the editor published a book related to this topic, titled Psychotherapy with Cardiac Patients: Behavioral Cardiology in Practice (American Psychological Association). Unlike other medical specialty areas such as oncology, the field of cardiology has been slow to integrate behavioral treatments into the delivery of service. Perhaps because the field has been largely defined and dominated by researchers, mental health clinicians are only starting to recognize behavioral cardiology as a viable arena in which to practice. There is a large void in the practitioner literature on behavioral cardiology. In a review of Psychotherapy with Cardiac Patients, Paul Efthim, Ph.D. wrote, "Her new book goes well beyond previous works by giving specific and detailed guidance about how to tailor psychological interventions with this variegated population." He added, "It would benefit from even more details about treatment approaches." This proposed volume goes beyond the editor’s previous volume by providing in-depth descriptions of behavioral treatments for distressed cardiac patients written by eminent leaders in behavioral cardiology. This book describes a wide range of behavioral treatments for the common psychologically based problems encountered by clinicians who treat cardiac patients. The book is organized as follows: Part I focuses on the most psychologically challenging and common presentations of cardiac diagnosis; coronary artery disease, arrhythmia, and heart failure. This section also includes a chapter on heart transplantation, which is a treatment, not a diagnosis, but a treatment that incurs profound psychological impact for the individual. In Part II, behavioral interventions for the general cardiac population are described. Mainstream therapies such as stress management, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and medical family therapy are described, along with approaches that have less empirical support but considerable practical significance such as personality-guided therapy and interventions aimed at altering type D personality traits. The literature in behavioral cardiology has a rich history of investigating maladaptive personality traits and thus it is important to include behavioral approaches that target personality in this volume. Part III focuses on common behavioral problems encountered by clinicians who work with this patient population. Most patients who seek psychological help do so because they perceive themselves to be stressed due to their job or overextended in all areas of their life. Other people with heart disease present with sleep problems and/or an inability to motivate themselves to exercise or quit smoking. There are many practical behavioral approaches that can be helpful for patients with these difficulties and these are detailed in this section of the book. The conclusion of the book focuses on how to integrate the behavioral treatments described in the preceding chapters into a comprehensive treatment model.

About the Author

Ellen Dornelas, Ph.D. is associate professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine at Farmington and director of behavioral health programs at the Henry Low Heart Center, Hartford Hospital. She received her Ph.D. from Yeshiva University in 1993. For the past 15 years, she has worked as a hospital-based psychologist, treating cardiac patients in medical inpatient, outpatient psychotherapy, and cardiac rehabilitation settings. She was trained as a clinical health psychologist and has a strong background in research in adapting psychotherapeutic approaches to meet the needs of medical patients. She edited a special issue of In Session: The Journal of Clinical Psychology called Integrating Health Psychology into Clinical Practice. In addition, for several years she was the media spokesperson for Connecticut’s anti-tobacco coalition.

Five Editions Says It All

The Trinity Alps are one of the most rugged, and least visited, mountain ranges in California. Despite their close proximity to the volcanic Cascades, the Alps more closely resemble a lower version of the Sierra, full of granite with some minor glaciation. They also have some geological similarities with the coastal range, and an almost unrivaled biological diversity, even considering their many rivals within the Golden State. But where to go to explore this range? You might consider starting with veteran Wilderness Press author Mike White's guide to the region and surrounding area. It is rare for a hiking guide to make it into multiple editions, but White's book is now in its 5th edition, and for good reason. It is a thoroughly researched and meticulously detailed guide to hiking in California's Northwest corner.

Checking in at well over 300 pages, this book not only covers the Trinity Alps Wilderness, but the equally scenic (in my opinion) Russian Wilderness, Whiskeytown Reservoir National Recreation Area, and the lands surrounding Castle Crags State Park. Most of the hikes in this book are extended backpack trips. White not only provides detailed route descriptions, but also the average elevation gained per mile on a hike, a statistic I find particularly useful. He also notes many side trips on each route, some of which involve overland hiking. But day hikers will also find a nice collection of options within the pages of this book. You can explore the many waterfalls around Whiskeytown Reservoir almost any time of year, including the famous lost falls. (A good feature of this book are the excursions into local history, including how a large waterfall came to be lost until 2004!) Finally, each route has a fairly detailed sketch map. That said, I would still use this book in conjunction with the US Forest Service Wilderness Maps just for the added detail a good topographical map includes.

On the whole, this is a fun (and educational) book to read, and should be your first resource when exploring the area on foot. It has been a staple of backcountry users for almost 30 years now, and there is a reason for that. It is simply the best guidebook to the region currently available.

Detailed but old fashioned

Just came back from the trinity alps where I used this book on a couple of routes. This is clearly a very professional book and I found it helpful if somewhat frustrating (see below).

Note to fellow customers:
The Table on Page xii is helpful to pick routes for their level of difficulty. If you look carefully you will see that the selection is pretty rugged. For our party I was looking for hikes between 4-8 miles in total length with (note!) less than 2,000 elevation change. There were very few (two) of those to choose from in this book.

I would like to make the following suggestions to the author:
* The map just before the table of contents is helpful. If there was a blow up version for each chapter with approximate locations of the different trailheads that would be very helpful for general orientation and base camp picking!
* In fact this being the 21st century one can complement every story of where a trailhead lies with a stable 20 character Google maps link to exact said location. This would make readers' lives so much easier when setting up one's GPS for the trip.
* Finally, I have only sampled two trails but in one of them (Tangled Blue Lake, #22) I was surprised at the lack of useful details in both story and provided map. For example, there were at least a couple fine dirt roads that split off from our route - neither was mentioned. At some point one has to leave a wide dirt road and switch to a narrow path. This switch is not discussed. etc.
* Because of the ragged landscape, it would be nice to denote where a shorter route on any of the suggested backpacking trips could lead to a pleasant day hike. (Ie, if the first 3 miles out of a 10 mile out backpack trip already leads to the first pretty lake).

Battling the Powers of Darkness

"Fire and Sword" is the fifth book in the "Chronicles of the Host" series. D. Brian Shafer continues in this exciting battle between good and evil. Lucifer and his angels strategize their next steps in their attempt to thwart the influence of Christ and His followers.

Shafer's descriptive word pictures brought a new realism to Paul's prison cell in Rome and insight into the parchment, quill, and ink process of his correspondence with the churches of the New Testament. During Luke's visits with Paul in prison, he fills Paul in on the recent events in Jerusalem regarding the amazing ministry Peter and the other apostles are experiencing.

The book backtracks to give an account of Paul's encounter with Steven and his stoning, and of his own conversion. Shafer follows with an account of the apostles' ministry as recorded in the book of Acts and of Paul's encounters while on his missionary journeys.

Conversations among the angles representing the powers of darkness clearly picture Lucifer's deceit and plans to dupe man by obscuring truth and with offers of worldly pleasure, and power. The archangels and the angelic hosts teach valuable lessons through their stimulating dialog.

Using creative, dramatic, and imaginative fiction as his platform, Shafer provides a brilliant balance of combining scriptural truth with literary license. His writing is Biblically sound, spiritually enlightening, and mentally invigorating.

"Fire and Sword" is a must read for anyone who enjoys historical Christian fiction, with a hint of fantasy and Science fiction. A great read.

I was very excited to get this book! It is part of a series of book from this author and they are awesome books. The best I've read on this subject outside of the Bible itself of coarse! The book came to me in excellent condition and I am very pleased. I have to say that Amazon has never let me down!

Unique approach to Calvary,the Angels and Lucifer

This author has a very unique writing and teaching apporach to bring to us the Word of God. It is a literature apporach. It is a story of truth. The subtitle "Chronicles of the Hosts" is so approprite. We all need today to learn truths, to grow closer to our Lord, and to serve Him to fully develop an every day loving relationship with Him and His Word. Take time and read this important life-issue book of our fight against the powers of darkness and evil in this world we live.
