A Wonderful Piece of Wizardry

The Book of Merlyn was an incredible book, once again proving the genius of T.H. White. This book is the only sensible conclusion to the Once and Future King and should have been included in the original printing. In The Book of Merlyn, we revisit King Arthur on the night before his final battle with his son, Mordred. Feeling dejected and alone, Arthur's mentor, the lovably eccentric and ingenious Merlyn, returns and whisks the king away to learn two final lessons from the animals he knew as a child. This book is not merely a childish fairytale, but rather an in-depth dissection of human nature in which the human condition is explored in depth and the ever-elusive meaning of life is hinted at. A book for the serious reader or any serious fan of Arthur and Merlyn, The Book of Merlyn is a masterpiece from the mind of one of the greatest writers of the past one hundred years.

from story to archetypal myth

If you like the Once and Future King as an amuzing story, then watch out, this book is not for you. Here White elevates his discussions to probe humanity's own lack of humanity. Having witnessed the horrors of World War II, White brilliantly exploits the Arthurian legend to analyze and discuss humans: are we as grand as we think we are? Is there hope? Are King Arthur's efforts (or, archetypally, the efforts of any human who is engaged in helping out the human race) fruitful or simply futile?
This is a humanistic work that dares to challenge the assumptions of humanism. Merlyn uses strong polemic to not only argue that humans are bad for nature (this is an incomplete understanding of the text) but that we have less "humanity" than vrtually all other animals. This view seems to be in direct conflict to Arthur's wish to salvage humanity. Yet Merlyn does not see it as a fatalistic view, he very much still shows hope.
The Book of Merlyn is a top-down, ideological examination of humanism enveloped in the archetypal Arthurian myth. It is not a bed-time story. It is not about lovely castles and romantic imagery.
It is about humanity.

A startling conclusion.

The marvelous 5th book of T. H. White's incredible Arthurian saga. This one, in it's complete lack of swordplay and thrill, is set apart from the preceeding four.

Ok, the first four--definately the Story is the major priority. Focal characters: Arthur, then after "The Sword in the Stone" the focus shifts to Lancelot and the queen, and to a lesser extent the Orkneys, etc. In the final chapter the reader is brought back to Arthur, whose musings on the nature of Man and War also smears our noses in these two essential elements, whose dissection was an important objective in the story for White.

Yeah, yeah, anyone who's read the book knows that. But what about the "Book of Merlyn"?

Well, picture drawing aside the glitter and pizzaz of the storyline that has won over so many people to focus on that teaming world of philosophy and abstract thought that Merlin had shown Arthur as a young king. Take "The Sword in the Stone", a primarily whimsical book in which I believe White first lay the groundwork for the "Book of Merlyn", return an aged, experienced and almost broken Arthur to this sort of setting, and...tada! bring back Merlin and the animals(or rather bring Arthur back to them). There now follows that dissection of War and Man we were talking about.

Yup, the whole book is essentially White's essay on these two subjects, given in a long philisophical discussion between the animals, Merlin, and an older Arthur in the comfort of the Badger's underground burrow(Nimue's cave, ha ha!).

Now for those who are thinking ,"Ye gods, the horror!", I gotta admit, in part, you're right. If you're thinking of reading this as the conclusion to "The Once and Future King" in a steady, smooth stream, you're in for a bumpy ride. Think about it, the book was published posthumously--there are structural problems and stuff(why I rate it 8 and not higher), the most blatant of which is the episodes as the ant and the goose from "The Sword in the Stone" properly belonged here originally, so you bump over that.

Bump.

Next, like I said, Story has taken a decided back seat to Essay. That's a bump for those who loved "The Once and Future King" for the laughter and the tears, a...MAJOR...bump.

BUMP.

But for those who can accept Story's new position in the scheme of things, you'll really dig this. Because White returns to someone he has really neglected in favor of Lancelot and Jenny and all that other stuff--Arthur. Arthur's back and he's gonna get a little attention, undergo a little developement. This is a must for you people. There is also now this beautiful circle to White's saga. And, getting down to the dirt, you are gonna love that Essay I was talking about.

It...is...BRILLIANT. For those who like this sort of thing, you will LOVE it, and for those who don't like this kind of stuff normally, you'll LOVE it anyway because of the original way White did it.

People who dug the "Tao of Pooh", you will LOVE this.

Kids doing an assignment on the underlying symbolism and whatnot of the "Once and Future King", you will LOVE this--it'll be so much help, it's almost cheating.

And. Finally. T.H. White fans everywhere. Read "The Book of Merlyn". In the end, this is what he's all about.

G. B. Trudeau has been drawing his Pulitzer Prize-winning comic strip for more than forty years. In addition to cartooning, Trudeau has worked in theater, film, and television. He also has been a contributing columnist for the New York Times op-ed page and later an essayist for Time magazine. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. He lives in New York City with his wife, Jane Pauley. They have three grown children.

Great Work Mr. Trudeau!

Doonesbury is a mainstay in my life. Just recently have I become a fan and just recently have I picked up almost all the books in order to keep myself up to date.

The political satire involving several major characters over so many years IN REAL TIME is really something to tip your hat to.

This book in particular deals with Arnold's reign of governatorship and the farciful laughs behind his groping of women beforehand, hence his Doonesbury Name "Herr Gropenfuhrer." He is shown as a large groping hand instead of the muscle-bound oldie-but-goodie we all know and love him to be.

More than anything else, this piece chronicles mainstay B.D.'s final days in Iraq as a militaryman. His last helmet is taken off by EMT's who nurse him after a shell-blast has taken off his leg. Stirring stuff and easily my favorite Doonesbury saga.

Another great Doonesbury production! Trudeau continues to keep up imaginative satire on the American scene.Whether you lean to the left or to the right; you just gotta admit Trudeau is a master of satire. Who but Trudeau would think of representing muscle man Schwartzenegger as "The Hand",and then to really drive the satire in a bit more--call him "Herr Gropenfuhrer"?

Then there's President Bush with his Roman -style War Helmut.Anyone can associate a Cowboy Hat with Bush ;but it takes Trudeau's genius to come up with this helmut.

My one regret about this period is that we didn't get a character of John Dean.Maybe he was just too much for Trudeau to handle without going "TILT".

This seemed to be the period of losses all the way around.Walden loses its Football team and coach,it's very raison d'entre,Zonker loses his chance to run for Governor of California,B.D loses a leg , Duke almost loses Honey to an Iraqi and on top of it all; too many good soldiers lose their lives in Iraq. And we call this a Comic Strip. I have been following the strips since I was a kid. I cut my teeth on Dick Tracey and Pogo . I still follow Tracey,but sadly we have lost the satire of Pogo and the swamp. Life was a lot simpler in those days. One thing was ,we knew who the enemy was; "it was us." in Pogo .In Tracey, it was Mumbles,Flattop,Pruneface or their ilk; and we could trust Tess,Junior, Gravel Gertie and the Police Chief.

I still have a positive criticism on the Doonesbury books,though. It is a shame that the strips are not all in color. They were all colored in my newspaper .The artwork is an

important and extremely good element of this strip and reading it in black and white is like looking at a sunset without its color.Even the sillouettes!

Anyway,fans of Doonesbury will love this book.

Great concept, too many executions....

...literally. The concept is that the hated editor of a number of authors has been murdered. Since each of the writers have a motive to off the man, hilariously named Herman Mildew, they must each give an alibi for their whereabouts.

The concept is brilliant, and I wish I'd thought of it. (Have I mentioned *I'm* an editor?) It's fun to read, with alibis ranging from "I couldn't have done it; I love Hermie even tho he doesn't like me to call him that and in fact has a restraining order against me" to "My alibi is a list of failed attempts at trying to murder him". The authors participating in the project write for children and young adults, so it was fun to read something (slightly) more adult.

I love that the proceeds benefit 826NYC, a literacy and creative program for kids. I hope lots of people buy this book so the organization gets tons of money.

However, there are just too many alibis. Although they are (mostly) original, after awhile they run together and it gets to be too much. I think this volume would have been better with at least 25 fewer. It also would have been nice to have had more illustrated alibis; there are only a few. Of course, I realize this was dependent on the authors who agreed to participate. I recommend getting a copy; just don't try to read it in one sitting!

Five Stars? It should be 80!!!!!!

To begin with, even if this were the worst book ever written, it would be worth buying since the proceeds go to 826NYC a literacy program for kids.

BUT it is, most definitely NOT the "worst" book ever... it's one of the best of it's kind!

WHAT kind?

The multi-author "novel" (see: Naked Came the... fill it in)

"Multi", did I say? Try 80 of the best Children's authors ever!

And each and every one of them MAY be guilty of the murder of Herman Q Mildew, the most despicable book editor... EVER... EVER... EEEEEVVVVER

But, each of them has an alibi... which they wrote... and which makes up this book

Until the SHOCKING! SURPRISING! STUNNING! ending!

Buy it! Read it! DON'T give it to a friend! Make them buy it, too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Book for English Teachers, Librarians and Children's/YA Lit Fans

What a wonderfully wicked idea. Who Done It? is a fundraising project for 826NYC, described in the book as "a nonprofit organization and superhero supply company dedicated to supporting students ages six to eighteen with their creative and expository writing skills, and helping teachers inspire their students to write."

The premise is that Herman Q. Mildew - an editor that was an author's worst nightmare - has been murdered. He is described as "Mr. Burns meets Stalin, but worse (appearance and odor-wise) than a gluttonous farm pig. Each of the authors is summoned to give their alibi. The results are hilarious. The authors scramble to come up with alibis and explanations, sometimes even trying to shift blame to one another.

I will definitely recommend this book to my local high school English teachers. I can see a new writing class assignment in the future. Students must write an essay on why they couldn't possibly have killed Miss Mothballs, the English teacher.

Helping Me Improve My Singing

"Singing Exercises For Dummies," with CD is actually helping me improve the sound of my singing. I used to be a pretty darn good singer when I was a teenager. But, my vocal ability has gotten quite rusty over the years. To the point where some friends have requested that I not sing if they aren't rolling their eyes and shaking their head. A few years ago I recorded myself singing so hear what I sounded like. Not very good. Quite bad to be honest with you.

What the heck happened? Where did my voice go? Maybe my ex got it in the divorce settlement. I knew I should have read the legal document a little closer before signing it!

Since doing the exercises with this book and CD I've begun to notice less annoyance from my friends when I sing along with the music playing on the stereo. I recently made another recording of myself singing and can definitely hear improvement.

I'm continuing to work with the exercises in the book and the CD. While I'm not shooting for a recording contract I am shooting for a vocal sound I enjoy singing with that won't annoy people.

Lots of specific tips -- for less than the price of a private lesson

So you've been singing along with the car radio for years and still can't quite get it right??? Or you want to snag the lead in the community theater's summer production of Oklahoma? Perhaps this book will help. There is lots and lots and lots of information here, all for less than the cost of a single private singing lesson. And the book is not just for dummies. In fact, I'm not sure it is for dummies at all. I would definitely say it is for folks with some, even quite a bit, of music knowledge, someone who has been singing for a while. I've been singing in a women's chorus for several years. Our director is a music educator who takes every opportunity to teach us tricks for improving our performance. And although the warm ups and breathing exercises in here were somewhat familiar, the vast majority of the information was very new to me!

The author has a doctorate in music and plenty of classical, opera, and musical theater performance experience. The information in the book ranges from the most simple music theory to the highly complicated. There's something for everyone, but frankly, I think the book might be a bit too technical for a casual singer who just wants to get a little better.

I found the chapters on shaping the tongue and lips for vowels and on articulating consonants accurately to be particularly challenging -- I wasn't quite sure what the author was saying half the time -- ("Singing the voiced J and unvoiced CH requires you to pucker your lips, place the tongue on the roof of your mouth to create a seal, and then release the seal to allow air to flow over the tip of the tongue") -- although no fault to the author; it is no doubt difficult to describe how we make different sounds. I was thrilled to get past the vowels and consonants and into the much simpler (at least for me) sections on rhythm and dynamics. The interval section was fun -- and I do think it will be extremely helpful in sight-reading and singing to master it. Love the "Singing All the Intervals" practice piece and other practice tips. The chapter on belting (which the author defines as "a combination of forward resonance and a mix of registers") was also WAY over my head. Maybe someday it will make sense to me.

Admittedly, I haven't worked through ALL of the exercises yet -- I've just kind of picked through parts that I understand and I think are doable. I suppose one could work through the entire book, like a coursebook, but I prefer to pick around. The book is really quite densely packed with information, and I think it will be something to go back to time and time again as I try to figure out specific singing challenges. I think if you really, really wanted to understand everything in the book and ensure you were applying it correctly, it would be helpful to have a little in-person guidance from a trained vocal coach along the way.

There is plenty of substantive content, but I do have a gripe about the presentation. The book is a large format (8.5" by 11") and printed on very flimsy newsprint. For something that will be used as a reference book -- you're not going to learn by singing through the exercises once -- rather than raced through like a romance novel -- this is disappointing.

Great exercises

This book has many of the same exercises my singing teacher introduced to me. I'm happy with the purchase--especially since I'm taking a break from singing lessons. I just wanted a big book of singing exercises and this is it. I like that you can play the piano instead of using the cd.

Dangerous Skies

Although this is the first novel I have read by Susan Fisher, it is categorized as one of the top 10 books I have read. She is able to generate the feelings of the characters within you and make you feel as if you were them. Here is an example from the book, " I snatched my hand out from under hers and flung myself into the farthest corner of the front seat. I looked out the window, all atwitch with nervous energy. As angry and frightened as I was, I felt as if pure adrenaline pumped through my veins." (p.112). The book shows an example of a heartbreaking friendship between two people from different worlds. Buck and Tunes, Buck being white and Tunes being black, having been raised since infancy, they take a tumble into the real world and find out that it its more than they assumed it was. This is a sad and very powerful story.
The initial message I was receiving from the book and its author was that if your in a realtionship of any kind, there will be someone to help you when u have lost all faith or need help. Even if you don't want help its not your choice, a good friend will help u no matter what. I would defiantly agree with this message because I have found that in my life when I needed help but I didn't want it, my friends still came through and helped me anyways. You may or may not agree with this theme depending on the type of relationship you have with friends. The reason why is because if you have a poor relationship with your friends, they may not be there to support you. So you may not be able to relate to the message of the author or agree with him. I know I certainly agree with her message.
I would recommend this book to others who are searching for a novel that will satisfy their needs for a great book. This book is not boring like other novels. I admire the way the book jumps to the climax within the second chapter of the book, it wont keep u waiting for the climax to arrive. So if you are looking for a exciting well written, heartbreaking book, this is the one you have been searching for your entire life. I would give this book a 9 out of 10, that is how much I cherish this book.

A great book written aboout friendship.

A great book written about friendship. Racism between the native American and an African American is the main point of this book.
The main character Buck is my favorite character in the book because the author "Suzzane Fisher Staples" created him as a clever and brave boy. Buck tried his best to help his friend Tunes, an African American, to get out of the trouble but he didn't make it. The reason was human racial prejudice. The racism between the black people and white people let Tunes get into the jail.
The book had a lot of funny and sad things happend. Including crime and human nature, let my emotion followed the characters up and down. When Buck and Tunes went fishing and hunting together, those setting had vivid in my mind. Although Tunes didn't kill anyone, she was accused by white men and put into jail, and the friendship between her and Buck was forceibly stopped. I could almost remember all the things happened in the book the story hooked me so much.
When I looked at the cover page of this book, I thought that is would be so boring, but when I stared reading the book, I felt really interesting and I loved it so much. I recommend it to all tenagerous who would like to read more aboout friendship and racism.

Racism

Buck and Tunes have always been best friends, even though Buck is white and Tunes is black. When Tunes' mom died when she was a baby, Buck's mom treated Tunes like her own little girl. It helps that Tunes' father works on the farm of Buck's parents. All that Buck and Tunes want is to be left alone to fish and find crabs near the water. Up until the summer they turn thirteen, that has been the case.

One day while out in Buck's boat, they find a body in the water. A friend of theirs, an older man with a family who works as a laborer on the farms nearby, is dead with his skull smashed and a bullet hole in his forehead. Tunes immediately jumps out of the boat and walks away; she doesn't want to have anything to do with this dead body. Buck tows it back to shore and tells the story of finding it, saying that Tunes was not with him at the time. He isn't sure why she doesn't want to be involved, but he will do his best to protect her.

Soon a horrible rumor is spread about Tunes, possibly in an attempt to divert attention away from their friend's killer. As things get more and more dangerous for Tunes, Buck's family backs farther and farther away from her. Buck is horrified. Could they really be so blind to the truth?

I liked that this story was truthful about racism. Bad and unfair things happened to Tunes because of her skin color, and this book didn't sugarcoat that fact. I liked that Buck continued to stand up for his friend, though, despite what others said about her. I was disappointed by the ending of the book.

With their 175 aircraft, the MLD in Southeast Asia outnumbered American and British naval air reconnaissance forces combined. Three months of intense fighting left the Dutch bereft of thousands of naval personnel and over 80 percent of their aircraft. This work details the actions of MLD during the Japanese invasion of the Netherlands East Indies. Beginning with a look at the origins of the MLD, it provides an overview of the force, including an analysis of its aircraft, equipment, personnel and training. Operations of the United States Navy and Royal Air Force seaplane units are included in order to provide a thorough history of the campaign. Final chapters cover the MLD's ill-fated attempts at evacuation of the island battleground and offer an overall review of the MLD's performance. Appendices contain such information as Allied and Japanese aircraft specifications, squadron tables of organization, and MLD bases and operational areas. Too Little Too Late

This is an area of warfare I am very interested in. Unfortunately, books like this only come along once every 10 to 20 years. This fills a gap in our knowledge of events leading up to and through the Pacific War against Japan.
The MLD, or Dutch Naval Air Force of the Netherlands East Indies, probably had the best organized reconnaissance force in the southwest Pacific area at the time. Maintaining neutrality in wars spreading around the globe was difficult, but the Netherlands East Indies were doing all they could not to become involved, and to be a haven for those trying to escape the European, African and Chinese theatre wars. The Japanese had different plans.
Once the fighting started though, the MLD was right in the thick of it, fighting hard right alongside their British, Australian and American allies against a Japanese war machine far superior to anything the allies could cobble together. Flying older German designed Do-24s, American PBYs, and Fokker seaplanes, the MLD kept up what pressure they could as the Japanese invasion forces swept through the East Indies, southeast Asia and into the Indian Ocean in the late fall of 1941, and the winter and spring of 1942. Most of the MLD crews paid with their lives to keep the allies abreast of where the Japanese forces were located and what they were doing. Some of the "invincibility" that became associated with the superb Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter, and in general the Japanese naval forces, was established and enhanced during this campaign.
When the smoke cleared, the Japanese were in control of the Netherlands East Indies, and the remaining MLD crews and ground personnel, if not captured, were evacuated to Australia or Ceylon. It was a story of too little, too late. The Dutch had tried to get more aircraft, AA guns and ordinance prior to the Japanese invasion, but a lack of interest on the part of her future allies, and a greater concern for the European conflict, even by the Dutch government-in-exile, left the MLD with only a handful of aircraft and hardware with which to face battle-hardened Japanese forces.
The book has many excellent and previously unpublished photographs of personnel, aircraft, and bases of the MLD. If your interests are for stories of some of the little known campaigns and more exotic places that became embroiled in the global conflagration known as World War Two, you will enjoy this book. Tom Womack is to be commended for researching, compiling and fleshing out this story,

An Unknown War gets some light shined upon it

Over the past few years I've been expanding my knowledge of WWII by focusing on the early portion of the war, more specifically, the war in the South Pacific. For awhile, Amazon has been recommended this book to me because of my rating of other related books. Anyway, I decided to give this book a try.

I'll open by saying this book only deals with the Dutch Naval Air Force (referred to as the MLD [Marine Luchtvaart Dienst]), the aircraft they flew, and the missions they performed in defense of the Netherlands East Indies. Passing references are made to US, British, Australian, and the Dutch Army Air Force (ML-KNIL). These passing references are usually related to the different patrol aircraft used by these forces, occasionally to the fighters or bombers.

Mr. Womack opens by describing the aircraft used by the MLD and the MLD's state of condition, prior to the start of WWII for the Dutch and once the Netherlands had been overrun by the Germans. While Mr. Womack describes all of the aircraft used by the Dutch, particular attention should be paid to his descriptions of the Dornier Do24's (called X boats by the MLD) and the PBY Catalina (Y boats). At times the other aircraft of the MLD are mentioned, but usually it's the X and Y boats going to war with the Japanese.

Having established pre-war conditions and how the Dutch attempted to improve their position, Mr. Womack brings us to December 1941 and the initial actions between the Japanese and Dutch. This is followed (rather rapidly) by the steady advancements the Japanese made in the South West Pacific and ending with the fall of Java. The book concludes by describing how the MLD evacuated from the East Indies and their general participation in the rest of WWII.

This book is a very solid 4.5 star book. The writing is clean, Mr. Womack describes things as a historian, not one translating oral history. There are some great photo's in the book showing the Dutch aircraft and other equipment. The maps are nice, but a little on the weak side, they show where the Japanese are able to threaten at any one time but I found it a little difficult finding where the different bases were that the aircraft were operating from. The appendices are nicely put together, providing very good information on the aircraft (there's a breakdown of what happened to every X and Y boat), squadrons, and losses. The charts should have been done considering a black and white printing (because of the grey scaling used, you can tell that the originals were in color). Also I wish Mr. Womack would have given us a little more of his analysis than he did. However, since Amazon doesn't grade on half stars, I need to decide on 4 or 5. Since this is obscure material and Mr. Womack has put together a very informative book on something most people aren't aware of, and he used excellent references (without regurgating what the original author said), I'll give him the nod to 5 stars. A very good job sir!

The Hordelands!

Horselords is the first book in the Empires Trilogy, which deals with a neglected part of the Realms, the Hordelands (located east of Faerun), and its inhabitants.

Specifically the book sheds light on Khahan Yamun, leader of the Tuigan tribe and his campaign of conquest in the lands of Kara-Tur. By his side, is Koja, a priest of Furo and advisor to Yamun.

The plot as a whole is very good. The book is a little slow in the beginning, but very well written, and as it goes on the characters come alive. David Cook does a great job of presenting the distinct culture and civilization of the peoples of the steppe. He has done a great deal of research in order to provide such an accurate and lucid description of the Mongol-like people.

There are strong elements that are characteristic of the TV miniseries Shogun, starring Richard Chamberlain, that aired in the early Eighties.

In conclusion, Horselords is strongly recommended for Eastern/Oriental enthusiasts who have a soft spot for Genghis Khan and everything Mongol.

The Horselords

Overall this book was an awesome display of tactical ingenuity. The Tuigans, seemingly modeled after the Mongols during the time of Genghis Khan, embody the Mongol singleminded warring tradition and culture. In Koja the Khazari monk, we see the perspective of someone from outside the culture who is then brought into the Tuigans. He sees the sublime qualities of Yamun Khahan, the leader of the Tuigans. Their enemies portray the Khahan and the Tuigan as cruel, unintelligent barbarians, but as the story shows, though the Tuigans generally cannot read or write, Yamun Khahan shows that sometimes the pen is "not" mightier than the sword. Undoubtedly, the Tuigan "are" cruel (real painful torture techniques) ...but Yamun Khahan parallels a Machievellian idea that "A leader is defined by cruelty used well or used poorly". Yamun embodies a greatness that few leaders have; possessing the power and charisma to drive hundreds of thousands of people to victory, death, and glory. I thought this was a great book, although, I think the ending left something to be desired (but that's my opinion). Nonetheless, that does not detract from the superb storyline and depth with which each of the main characters disposes on the reader.

Horselords: One of the finest pieces of alternative fantasy

Horselords is a novel I first read over 15 years ago, and it still enchants me today, as much as it did then. It is a novel set in the Forgotten Realms setting, but it is a great book by itself and no prior reading is neccesary to enjoy it.

This is a fantasy novel, not with knights, dragons, and princesses... but based on the Mongols and tribes of the Asian steppe. Set around nomad life, and seen in part from the view of a Tibetenesque monk living with this radically different culture.

It is extremely well written, and while it is a tale of war, there is a majority of time spent on culture and life of the nomad, along with dialogue between the juxtaposed monk and the "barbarians."

This is one of my all time favorites, and while its sequels were not of the same caliber (or even the same author), it is a great stand alone story, that leaves you thirsting for more! If you like non-western fantasy settings, mongols, or just a good story, you will appreciate this book.

Everyone should read this book

I absolutely love this book to bits, both for the writing style and for the quality of its content. Lesbian and Gay Parents has an entertaining style to read and each chapter is thoroughly introduced with adequate context. I cannot empahsise enough how easy to read each of these sections are. You can read this book piecemeal or from cover to cover. This is a book that supports lesbian and gay rights (LGBTI rights more broadly are mentioned but the research is sparser) but it is solidly based on what science has found, not on what politics says should be. If it's possible to have a crush on a book, I certainly have one.

You don't need any particular background in science to read this book because the usefulness and context of the research is clearly explained. I'd recommend it not just to those who have an interest in LGBTI issues but to anybody who is a member of a family - because this book not only talks about how these minority families are different but also the ways in which all families are alike.

The Most Comprehensive Review of Lesbian and Gay Parenting to Date!

This text should be required reading for all policymakers, lawyers, practitioners, researchers, and educators who work with families. I would recommend this text to any student interested in families, gender, or sexualities. This book can be read by a wide audience and will be a wonderful resource for prospective and active lesbian and gay parents, their children, and their children's children. With this text, Goldberg secures her status as an expert scholar in the burgeoning field of lesbian and gay family studies.

The Human Family

"The family," writes Dr. Abbie Goldberg, "is the principal context in which human development takes place...." It's a straight-forward statement which usually describes a family dynamic headed by a parental unit that identifies as straight - the colloquial term for heterosexual. But what if the parental unit is lesbian or gay? Are they still a family? And who exactly makes up a family?

Those questions form the heart of this book as Goldberg explores the gay and lesbian experience in parenting children. And while the marriage equality movement adopted the slogan that "love makes a family," from a sociopolitical and legal perspective, public policy defines a family and accords it rights and privileges based on an accepted construct.

So, who constructs the construct of family? Goldberg notes that biological parenthood is "fundamentally gendered." Yet, how straight people and gay and lesbian people build their families isn't all that different except - and this is the big exception - gay and lesbian couples can not procreate with their partner. The idea of traditional conception within a fundamentally gendered family, whether or not conception actually takes place, has generally been the reinforcing construct of family across the societal spectrum.

Goldberg's research doesn't need to challenge this conception of family since it is a valid construct. Rather, through life narratives (qualitative) and statistical comparisons (quantitative), her research shows that human development within a gay and lesbian family reality is a parallel and sustainable construct, too. This is an important work that will help policy makers in every discipline embrace new notions of the human family.
