Son of Thunder: Forgotten Realms (The Fighters), by Murray Leeder

It was the best thing that ever happened to him.

It was his god’s blessing.

It was hell.

Vell was content to be a mere warrior in the Thunderbeast tribe, staying behind on the hunt to guard the camp.

But then something alien awakened deep within him, the spirit of a behemoth that he could not control. With it came attacks from the sky, visitors from far lands, and a mysterious command from their ancestral totem: Find the living. And this time, no one was going to let him just stay behind.

"Son of Thunder" is a novel about a group of Uthgart barbarians set on a quest by their deity to find their totem animals. The problems start when the Zhentarim take interest in the powerful magic somehow connected to those animals... This short description maybe sounds a bit dull and rehearsed, but this is, after all, an interesting book.

The thing I liked the most in this novel are the antagonists. Since they get almost an equal share of the page count, you can't say it is a small factor. Leeder's villains are rich in character, interesting and believable. They act logically and in accordance with their natures and/or histories. They have all those little quirks and habits that make them unique and memorable. This book even features a hobgoblin with identity crisis.

The plot was well conceived, as well as two other notable subplots. One of the subplots has even a truly unpredictable twist towards the end of the book. The book is also rich with Realms lore, especially concerning the origin and roots of the Uthgart barbarians. The characters gather the lore along the way, which makes it much more interesting than if a wise old guy gave them the whole story in one place (as it often happens in such novels). This book features a whole bunch of characters, and many of them get a page or two for their histories and exploits. I liked that a lot.

On the downside, the protagonists are a bit boring, to be sincere. The leading character is a well rehearsed unlikely-hero-who-doesn't-want-to-be-a-hero type. He is probably the weakest link of this novel. But since this is not one of those novels that center on only one character, it makes this complaint a bit milder. The book also features a totally unnecessary short romance, and that is about it on the things I didn't like.

All in all, a FR novel definitely worth reading.

Average at best...
By Andy Gray
Son of Thunder by Murray J.D. Leeder is the 3rd book in a series of stand alone novels focusing on the Fighter class set in the Forgotten Realms. This is Leeder's first full length novel in the realms and I must say it is less than stellar. That is not to say it's not a decent book, but not in the same league with others who have written these stand alones such as Erik de Bie, Jess Lebow, Kameron Franklin et al.

The basic plot behind Son of Thunder (SoT) is a decent enough story. It involves a barbarian tribe, their god, and the Zhentarim. This mix of players creates a story that covers lot of ground, but doesn't `accomplish' a whole lot for the reader. The characters are not very interesting - most I could really care less about. The book may be loaded with Realms Lore, but it is also loaded with cliché after cliché.

The one basic plot line in this book, but it almost seems like Leeder tries to get the reader to believe that there are other plotlines as well. The basic premise is that a small group of barbarians need to trek across a large area for the calling of their god. Then trek all the way back to another area... then all the way back in the end. Lots of walking! Throughout this trekking the small group (12 people) meet up with a few people to `assist' their trek. The entire book, I just felt like I was reading the account of someone playing a video game. Group does this... group does that. Finally, the end of the book, the last 30 pages the author tries to throw in so many twists I literally groaned after the second one. Maybe one or two of them would have been effective, but the ending of the book left a bad taste in my mouth when I was finished. This book just did not resonate with me.

The characters in this book were far from interesting. To me these characters could be found in almost any other fantasy book on the shelves today. There was little to nothing that made the characters memorable, aside from one thing with Vell (main character) but I won't reveal that here as it is a spoiler of sorts. Beyond Vell the characters were simply blah to me. I didn't care about them, they didn't grab me in a way that wanted me to keep reading. They were just there.

This book did have some good points to it. Leeder's writing style is very inviting and allows the reader a fairly uninterrupted flow. I can definitely see that he has talent for writing, maybe this book was pushed on him. It just didn't seem like he was comfortable writing it, almost forced if you will.

If I had to choose between recommending or not recommending this book, sadly I would most likely go with the later of the two choices. It's an ok read at best and I think there are countless other books out there that would offer the reader more satisfaction. However, if the reader is looking for something rather formulaic and need something to satisfy a fantasy urge, they could do worse than this book. This is average at best.

In Want of Something More
By FicktionPhotography
I am not going to pretend that I like this book because I very obviously did not prefer it over others I have ever read. I suppose, if you haven't read fantasy-fiction before, this book would be a good one for you, but if you have and prefer the genre and excellent writing then you may be disappointed.

This is by no means an utter fiasco, but it is difficult to read and is filled with characters that seem to simply be cookie cutouts of other present characters. Take the two main, protagonist, characters named Vell and Kellin. Vell is the truest of the main characters; he is part of a barbarian tribe called the Thunderbeasts who becomes imbued with the powers of their god with the same name as their tribe. Kellin is a secondary, female, main character who is a sorceress scholar whose father studied the Thunderbeast tribe for many years. She becomes entangled in Vell's quest to fulfill a prophecy the Thunderbeast gives to him by taking over his body and speaking through him, saying, "Find the living."

The tribe goes on a quest to find the living, whatever that means (no spoilers here), while a rich Mayor of a merchant town called Llorkh strives to find artifacts that are also attached to the Thunderbeasts. These magical artifacts would be of great service to him while the Thunderbeasts obviously just want to fulfill and protect their god's wishes. It's truly just a classic story of attempting to save traditional, native practices while the more "advanced" civilizations attempt to take that away and use it for ill.

Kellin and Vell are replicas of each other in that they are both disgruntled, looking for something more, and stubborn in their right to express their thoughts and desires. The "bad guys" also resemble each other's personalities and it gets old fast. None of the characters stand out as they all seem to speak identically, despite the fact that they should be speaking different tongues. I guess they are all experts at that. Because of this, there is a lot of confusion at times trying to follow who is speaking and who isn't. Names like Thluna and Thanar and random characters that enter the story to conveniently speed the party along compounds the matter.

The story itself, as mentioned before, is bland in that it has been told before and it isn't cleverly disguised by new concepts or ideas. Even something as blatantly obvious as a giant tree called the "Grandfather Tree" which is a physical and symbolic representation of nature and tradition and peace among the natural paces of life is present as a stopping point for the quest.

The novel itself isn't terrible, it's just not great. It's somewhat engaging and a quick read, but it's just bland. It is wanting more in storytelling and difference to stand out in the vast world of pages.

The Conviction: David Sloane, Book 5, by Robert Dugoni

Lawyer David Sloane is a desperate parent. His son Jake, still reeling from the loss of his mother in a brutal murder (Bodily Harm), has spiraled out of control. Sloane needs to reconnect with him - needs to keep him out of jail. So when an old friend suggests a guys-only camping trip, Sloane accepts. Maybe if he and Jake get away they will find needed quality time. Bond. Catch a few fish.

But the trip into the remote reaches of California's Gold Country takes a turn for the worse when Jake and his buddy are caught vandalizing a general store. Brought to trial in a kangaroo court, the presiding judge tries, convicts and sentences the boys to six months in the county-owned wilderness detention center. For the teen-aged boys, a grueling psychological and physical ordeal begins.

As Sloane fights the conviction, he stumbles into ever-more menacing territory. A clannish town, a judge whose authority seems to extend far beyond the confines of his courtroom, and the emerging story of a juvenile detention center from hell, where the glories of nature cover dark secrets. All standards of lawyerly conduct fail Sloane in Judge Earl Boykin's court. With his legal options exhausted, knowing the boys' lives are on the line, Sloane hatches a daring rescue operation that just might get them all killed.

For the lawyer who never loses, this time the only way to win is outside the law.

Fish Out Of Water
By Ken C.
I guess I will also be a fish out of water, with my review sitting amidst all of the 5 star ones. But don't forget, 3 stars means it's okay, and The Conviction is okay. You can take it along for a summer read and not feel cheated, but I did think it was boring in part. The story itself has been done many times, and that is the fish out of water idea. These city slickers come to the rural mountains and find that things are done differently than they are used to, and they face long odds if they want to change the established ways. We, the readers, of course are told that the locals are corrupted, or seem to be, justice has been perverted, and so we root for the city slickers. We root for them even when the story veers far from plausibility, because that's our role, isn't it? We aren't supposed to say "hey, that wouldn't likely happen!" But too many things happen that are so unlikely that this reader could only roll his eyes. Not in a million years would this set of facts and this set of characters come together as the author has written. So let's not mistake this for a great story. As I said, it's okay. Now I guess I will get unhelpful votes from the faithful. But hey, I did read the book, and no publisher provided me a free copy!

I almost gave up.
By Peter W. Reed
The first three quarters of this novel details abuse of juveniles sent to a boot camp (prison) by sadistic guards and the Captain; the corrupt behavior of a wicked judge; and the main characters' efforts to release their sons from the camp using the law. I tired of what I thought was a really tacky, awful story. I gave up reading it. But, I came back to it and decided to finish it to see if it got any better and how it all came out. I have to say that the final hundred or so pages were full of surprises and held my interest much better than the earlier, sordid takes of abuse in the boot camp and shenanigans of the evil judge. I read Dugoni's "Murder One" and liked it a lot. Decided to try this new effort by the author. I don't think it's near as good...just too schlocky overall. I do not understand how anyone could give it five stars! Easy beach reading, I guess, but, to me, not worth the read.

Dugoni's best yet, not to be missed.
By Robert Pace
The jury is back and the verdict is unanimous. Robert Dugoni is not the `next' anyone in legal thrillers, he's the new standard against which others will now be judged. If Murder One was his Master's thesis, then his latest David Sloane thriller, The Conviction, is his PhD; a dissertation in deception.
Sloane, the lawyer that never loses, finds himself reliving a horror from his recent past through the behavior of his step-son, who is suffering his own crisis of self-destruction brought on by witnessing his mother's brutal murder and coming perilously close to his own. In a last ditch effort to reconnect--and keep Jake out of jail--Sloane accepts an invitation to go camping with an old friend and his son.
Jake, reluctantly followed by the younger boy, runs afoul of local law enforcement in a small town in California's Gold Country. Whisked away, tried and convicted in a kangaroo court, the boys find themselves on the way to a juvenile detention center from Hell before the dads fully realize they are missing.
Now, the law Sloane has manipulated to his advantage for so long, becomes a ponderous impediment, and he must decide if he can do whatever it takes--legal or not--to rescue the boys before time runs out.
The Conviction, is a taut, riveting Tilt-A-Wheel ride that builds to a white-knuckle climax for readers. Dugoni is fully in command of his craft and does not disappoint. This book makes a compelling case that Robert Dugoni deserves a place atop the bestseller throne. All hail the new king of legal thrillers!

Wisdom's Daughter: A Novel of Solomon and Sheba, by India Edghill

This is the tale of Bilqis, the Queen of Sheba, who rules the spice lands and bows before the will of the Goddess.

This is the tale of Solomon, the King of Israel and Judea, who built the golden temple to Yahweh in Jerusalem. Once he prayed that he might rule wisely.

This is the tale of Solomon's wives, of his concubines ... and of his daughter Baalit, more beloved than any son. Here are their voices, their mysteries, and their deepest secrets. Here they sing their songs and weave their tapestries.

As the queen's search for a true heir to her throne takes her to the court of the wisest man in the world, both she and the king learn how to value truth, love, and duty...and the king's daughter learns that not all the world is ruled by men.

Wisdom's Daughter is a vivid and richly textured rendition of the biblical tale of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. Told in a tapestry of voices that ring with authenticity, Wisdom's Daughter profoundly reveals the deep ties among women in a patriarchal world.

From Booklist
Like her previous novel, Queenmaker (2002), Edghill's latest fictionalization of an Old Testament story will appeal to the Red Tent crowd, both for its emphasis on the role of women in ancient Israel and for the author's ability to bring history to life. Edghill transforms a didactic fable, the story of King Solomon and his brief interaction with the Queen of Sheba, into a powerful love story of a man and the queen who won his heart. Rotating among multiple narrators-- including several of Solomon's 40 wives; his daughter Baalit; Bilqis, the Queen of Sheba; Solomon's war general; and Solomon himself--Edghill tells the story of why Bilqis came to King David's City and why Solomon lavished her with gifts and eventually gave her his daughter. Leisurely paced and focused on the wisdom of Solomon and the burdens of his reign, this atmospheric story is packed with political intrigue, illuminating the curious mixture of cultures and religions among the women of Solomon's court. Sumptuous historical novel set in King Solomon's time
By Joanna Daneman
I did have a chance to see the galleys of this novel before publication last year and even give an opinion or two back to the author, and I thought then that this book looked to be very promising. Now, reading it in published form, I think "Wisdom's Daughter" is even better than India Edghill's previous book "Queenmaker"--the story of Queen Michal, Saul's daughter and David's consort.

In "Wisdom's Daughter", Edghill recreates the court of King Solomon and of Bilqis, Queen of Sheba. The author poses an answer to the riddle of the reason behind the Queen's long journey from far-off Sheba to Israel. What were the questions she wished to have answered that were so perplexing? It is rare that a queen would travel for months away from her realm and offer riches beyond imagination for information! Some have speculated that, in the Bible "all she desired" was to have a child by Solomon. Edghill proposes a far more intricate answer.

The writing is stylized though not overly florid, as befits the subject, and the imagery is rich and colorful. The stories of the other queens of Solomon are as interesting as Bilqis' own; a Sword Maiden from Troy, a sorceress who charms snakes to peer into the future, a breeder of tiny dogs, a Northerner whose blonde hair and pale skin is considered exotic and a princess of Cush (Nubia) who is "black but comely" as the Song of Songs states.

Bilqis is joined by Baalit, the splendid daughter of Solomon. She is brilliant and wise enough to rule as a Queen, but in Israel, her brothers, who are by and large quite inferior to her, will succeed to the throne. Characters from "Queenmaker" also make a reappearance, so this novel is in a sense a continuation of the first book. Howver, it stands entirely on its own as a novel. Together, they are fascinating historical fiction, more in the mythical style than in the factual, and filled with romance and adventure. A fine, pleasurable read. Recommended for those who love historical or fantasy fiction.

A brilliantly imagined ancient world
By Voracious Reader
In Wisdom's Daughter, Edghill continues the saga of the women in the households of David and Solomon. Each of the wives and concubines emerge as memorable individuals. The author provides a strikingly original premise for the Queen's journey to the court of Solomon; my only criticism is that the ultimate outcome is predictable from an early point in the story, however, the lush descriptions of settings and the well developed characters more than make up for the lack of suspense. Some readers of her first novel (Queenmaker) objected to Edghill's depiction of King David; in this second novel, the primary characters are shown in a more sympathetic light. I was surprised to find how little is known about the real historical figure (the Queen of Sheba), and enchanted by the invented character in this book.

Sultry & Historical - Interesting perspective
By Music Lady Lisa
When I say that this book is sultry it is simply because it truly seems to bring to life the steamyness of love in Solomon's palace, the animosities between his many wives from various religions and cultures, and his slow-burning romance with the Queen of Sheba.

The history seems to me to be plausible and accurate, and straight off the author lets us know the exact biblical text which sparks her tale so as not to delude the reader as to what is fact and what is fiction. There are many tidbits about the unsettled living between the followers of Yahweh and those who worshipped other gods and even goddesses. I also gained a new insight into the politics of royal marriages as diplomatic manuevers.

What I found enjoyable was that the tale was at different points told from the perspectives of different characters: Solomon, the Queen of Sheba, Solomon's daughter, various of his wives, friends and leaders in the royal household. This led to an interesting play of deceptions, misunderstandings, hidden information, etc. which kept the ultimate plot twists and ending somewhat obscured from view, though not completely unpredictible. Much of this is told from the female point of view, which is refreshing in a world that was so dominated by men.

I admit that I finished this in 2 days as a summer read and didn't want to put it down. It was certainly more than worth the under $6 price I paid for it off of a bargain rack. I would recommend it to those who enjoy historical fiction, and in particular religious and Christian historical fiction. Similar books I've read would include Diamant's "The Red Tent" and to a lesser extent Wangerin's "Paul."

The Nelson-Wolgast Fight and the San Francisco Boxing Scene, 1900-1914, by Arne K. Lang

During the early years of the 20th century, San Francisco promoters served up boxing's grandest spectacles. On February 22, 1910, a crowd of more than 15,000 braved chilly, rainy conditions to witness one such match, pitting lightweight champion "Battling" Nelson against Ad Wolgast. That epic battle came to stand virtually unchallenged as the most brutal fight of all time.
This volume recaptures that historic fight while vividly illuminating the geographic, historic, and political forces that made it all possible. In chronicling these colorful boxers and their vibrant era, this work also reveals the dangers faced by workman pugilists like Nelson and Wolgast, making their tale, at its heart, a cautionary one.

Review
"Recommend." --Cyber Boxing Zone

"A very fun read and a wonderful addition to the library of any true boxing fan. Lang's book is a masterful paean to a vintage era in boxing history...evocative prose...Lang manages to put his readers in the ring with these all-time greats during their most significant matches to the extent that one can almost feel the intensity of the fights they were in and the ferocity of the punishment they received. Lang's book is as hard to put down as Battling Nelson in his heyday and the very rare photographs and illustrations in the book truly enhance the majesty of his words." --TheFightNetwork.com

"Excellent...outstanding." --East Side Boxing

This book has become my "Acting" bible.
By A Customer
The first two sections of the book alone increased my abilities in front of the camera 100%. It became that I would read it over each week on my way to acting class. Tony Barr examines all areas of acting, tools, preparation, working on set and putting what you have learned into practice. It is to the point, intelligent and easy to read. It is a book to be studied, underlined and reread. I really feel it is a must for anyone wanting to act in front of a camera, regardless of your talent level.

Want To Be in Pictures?
By A Customer
Well, got a camcorder? I'm not being funny. The Eric Kline exercises at the end of the book will teach you things, with the aid of a camcorder that no amount of talking or reading can. But first, read the book.
Economy is its keyword. Tony Barr gleans, from years of teaching since he founded The Film Actors Workshop in 1960, the most effective and easiest techniques for both the novice and the pro to truthfully "communicate ideas and emotions" through the camera.
Correctly relegating exercises to exercises rather than as a response to the director's shout for "action," Barr recounts the need for listening, sensing and learning to respond to stimuli moment to moment. He divides the book into sections. The first two, "Acting" and "Working on the Role", he tells us are enough for anyone to create a strong performance. The next, "Tools," he warns are extras, only to be approached after you have mastered the first. The last part of the book gives the never-been-on-a-set-before actor everything he/she needs for that first role, the understanding of the mechanics of movie making that directors expect from actors.
Want to be in pictures? This is a must-read for you.

Great general book on acting, with emphasis on TV/Film
By Jason Brent
I obtained this book to read while taking an "Audition For Camera" class at my acting school. I'm a relative novice, but had read some books on general acting before, such as Uta Hagen's "A Challenge For The Actor," and really wanted a book that talked about specific aspects of acting in front of a camera.

This book, Tony Barr's "Acting For The Camera," is a little different from what I was initially hoping it would be, in that it basically is a book about general acting, with more than the entire first half of the book devoted to that. I remember often thinking "when are we going to get to the part about camera work?"

Mr. Barr's general thoughts on acting are actually quite good, though, which encouraged me to read through the whole of the first section, and I would say that there are many excellent insights there. It's also a relatively quick read, as opposed to Uta Hagen's book, for example, and many things are presented in ways I hadn't read in other books before.

When I finally got to the "camera" section of the book, I sort of realized that the reason he probably spent so much time with the "general acting" stuff is because ... well, the most important part of "acting for the camera" is the ACTING, not the CAMERA! Of course there are many specifics that he addresses, but all the specifics and terminology etc. aren't going to help you if you can't act.

Plus, the section on "exercises" at the end of the book was helpful to read, even though I haven't tried any of them myself yet ... they seem like well-thought out exercises to improve ones' camera work.

The groundwork and advice on acting that he gives, though, is excellent all-around and seems appropriate to apply to ANY type of acting, not just camera acting.

So, all in all, I'd say that the book would more accurately be titled "ACTING, with a special section on Acting For The Camera!" That isn't quite as marketable though, I suppose!!

Big Thicket People (Bridwell Texas History), by Larry Jene Fisher, Thad Sitton

Living off the land—hunting, fishing, and farming, along with a range of specialized crafts that provided barter or cash income—was a way of life that persisted well into the twentieth century in the Big Thicket of southeast Texas. Before this way of life ended with World War II, professional photographer Larry Jene Fisher spent a decade between the 1930s and 1940s photographing Big Thicket people living and working in the old ways. His photographs, the only known collection on this subject, constitute an irreplaceable record of lifeways that first took root in the southeastern woodlands of the colonial United States and eventually spread all across the Southern frontier.

Big Thicket People presents Fisher's photographs in suites that document a wide slice of Big Thicket life-people, dogs, camps, deer hunts, farming, syrup mills, rooter hogs and stock raising, railroad tie making, barrel stave making, chimney building, peckerwood sawmills, logging, turpentining, town life, church services and picnics, funerals and golden weddings, and dances and other amusements. Accompanying each suite of images is a cultural essay by Thad Sitton, who also introduces the book with a historical overview of life in the Big Thicket. C. E. Hunt provides an informative biography of Larry Jene Fisher.

"Larry Jene Fisher's pictures are beautiful and insightful records of a time that, as Sitton points out, is the end of a time. . . . For which reason, these pictures and Sitton and Hunt's commentaries are priceless reminders of a piece of history, where some of us came from, and what we were and how we lived. . . . This is a jewel of a book." (F. E. Abernethy, Executive Secretary and Editor (1971-2004), Texas Folklore Society, and author of Tales from the Big Thicket, among many other publications)

Extraordinary photographs/narrative of Big Thicket
By Suzanne Dixon
This book does a magnificent job of capturing a poorly documented chapter
in our nation's history. Sitton and Hunt's text combined with Fisher's
amazing photography magically transports you to the East Texas of the 1930s and 1940s. In reality, the book transports you to the Old South for these "lost" lifeways were common throughout the South before WWII. If you'd like to know more about the Old South, whether it be fox hunting, tie hacking, turpentining or just the old free range livestock culture, this book is a must.

Again, Sitton and Hunt do a great job of telling/showing the history of the rural South which has not been heavily documented. I highly recommend this book, it is a MUST have.

A Great American Story
By Carl W. Hunt
Sitton and Hunt recap the Great American Story, told many times in many places in this great nation. Blending a worthy narrative with an amazing array of photographs from Larry Jene Fisher, the authors remind us why and how America became so great and why East Texas is such a magnificent story of its own. Read this book if you want to understand what made America and Texas rich and dynamic. Study this book if you want to recall what we must build on to keep our nation great. There's a reason we are who we are and Big Thicket People captures that story superbly.

Excellent Photographic and Narritive Documentary of the Big Thicket
By Andy Jones
This book offers wonderful photography of an almost lost era in American history. The history of the rural South has not been heavily documented. Sitton and Hunt combine the outstanding photography of Larry Fisher with their wonderful text to make this era come alive. Many of these photographs provide extremely rare documentation of old Southern lifeways, such as turpentining, marking ears of free-range hogs, stave making, etc. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of the South or East Texas. It is a fabulous resource.

Review
Praise for HOUR OF THE RAT

The New York Times and USA Today bestselling Ellie McEnroe series.

A Los Angeles Times Summer PageTurner

“A smart, jaw-droppingly good thriller, often hilarious, set in a revelatory depiction of modern China. Hour of the Rat should make Lisa Brackmann a star.” — Timothy Hallinan, author of the Junior Bender series

“A totally genius novel: smart, funny, dark, hip... exquisite. She had me in a choke-hold of utter happy reading splendor from, literally, the first sentence, and never let up. Also, I think I could hang with Ellie McEnroe forever. Definitely the woman I want along on my next wild jaunt across Asia.” — Cornelia Read, author of the Madeline Dare series

“Brackmann’s easy familiarity with everyday life in China lends a fascinating multiculturalism to her writing. Nods to local cuisine, Chinese slang and dress help paint a vivid picture of that country.... [Ellie] always entertains.” — Kirkus Reviews

“A finely honed thriller.... Brackmann is as adept at bringing China’s densely populated cities and breathtaking landscapes to life as she is at depicting her flawed but appealing characters and twists and turns galore.” — Publishers Weekly

“One of the best thrillers of the year.... Brackmann has topped off a perfect, darkly humorous, hip novel and gone one better by writing dialog that is Chandleresque yet thug modern. She has set the bar high for anyone wishing to write at the top of their game in the noir genre.” — Seattle Post-Intelligencer

“This mystery-thriller set among China's expat community is both a fascinating character study and a transportation in place. Brackmann's descriptions of China make me feel like I've been there. Plus, Ellie says what all of us are thinking. Love her!” — Huffington Post

"In Rock Paper Tiger and Hour of the Rat Brackmann has taken on weighty subjects with a light touch: Iraq, Xinjiang, fervent religiosity, torture and eco-terrorism, to name a few." — Time Out Beijing

"[Brackmann] somehow manages to weave together a perfectly logical story with Uigar dissidents, a subversive online game, and the Chinese art world, without ever bogging down in explication. There aren’t many writers who could pull all that off, maintain suspense, and be funny, too." — Long Beach Gazette

“Brackmann's crime fiction is exhilarating and compelling, and I had no regrets about trading in my preconceptions about China, to absorb both the current issues and the clear passion that Ellie has for the place and its diversity.” — Beth Kanell, Owner, Kingdom Books

“One part China travelogue, two parts mystery, and a healthy dose of quirky charm. This is a perfect summer read for those looking for a mystery that’s off the beaten path!” — My Bookish Ways

Praise for ROCK PAPER TIGER

“Don’t turn the pages too fast. Brackmann’s evocation of China, funny, frustrating, frightening, sometimes tender, and always real, is worth savoring.” — Nicole Mones, author of Lost in Translation and The Last Chinese Chef

“Lisa Brackmann’s novel gets off to a fast start and never lets up…. Ellie is a perfect spunky heroine…. be prepared for a wild ride.” — The New York Times Book Review

“Recommendation for More Thrills: This pulse-racer about an American Iraq-war vet is set in the art world of Beijing.” — Entertainment Weekly

“Lisa Brackmann’s debut novel is as slick and smart as an alley cat…. Beijing in Rock Paper Tiger is as it is in real life: fast, furious, often ugly, and with a Starbucks sitting on every corner.” — Time Out Beijing

“Summer reading recommendation. “The contemporary China so vividly rendered in Lisa Brackmann's bracing debut novel is a place where the Starbucks baristas ‘all know the English words for coffee'’ and housing developments are named after glamorous U.S. hotspots… Rock Paper Tiger is a gripping ex-pat nightmare that unfolds with superb pacing and salient details. And it makes you damned glad your life is boring.” — Miami Herald

“A remarkable debut… Brackmann paints a mesmerizing picture of life in jittery modern Beijing.” — Seattle Times

“Lisa Brackmann’s timely and hip debut novel is a thriller with a plucky heroine, locales actual and virtual, and grounding in the Abu Ghraib scandal…. Brackmann can write.” — Boston Globe

“At the top of the Most Promising New Author list is Lisa Brackmann with Rock Paper Tiger ... a terrifying tale of life and death behind the Bamboo Curtain.” — San Diego Union Tribune

“Rock Paper Tiger is a splendid debut novel by a gifted new writer. Her Chinese setting is exotic and chilling, and the characters live and breathe. The story is smart and fast as a sports car. Keep an eye on Brackmann.” — T. Jefferson Parker, author of The Renegades and Iron River

“Few writers would be up to the challenge of blending the worlds of urban China, Iraq, and a virtual online kingdom—but Lisa Brackmann wildly succeeds. Prepare to taste the smog, smell the noodles, and rub the Beijing dust between your fingers.” — Eliot Pattison, author of the Edgar award-winning novel, The Skull Mantra

“A terrifying odyssey in present-day China.... A totally captivating page-turner with vivid, first-hand details and nuanced multi-cultural facets.” — Qiu Xiaolong, author of The Mao Case

Chapter 1

I seriously need to get out of Beijing.

There’s the fact that the air is trying to kill me. No joke. The American embassy over in Chaoyang does readings of the air quality in Beijing, since the Chinese government doesn’t, or won’t reveal the results anyway. A while ago it was so polluted that they ran out of normal descriptions and came up with one of their own, so what went out over Twitter was that the air was “crazy-bad.”

Thanks, guys. Remind me not to breathe.

There’s also that it’s been another long winter, and while you think I’d know what’s coming after three years, it still takes me by surprise: months of wind so cold and dry that sometimes I feel like I’m breathing razors. Now that it’s the last day in February, temps are getting up above freezing at least, but it’s still the kind of cold that settles into your bones and makes my leg ache even more than it usually does.

My apartment’s comfortable. There’s a central furnace that controls the radiators in the living room and the two bedrooms; the enclosed balconies provide a buffer against the chill. I broke down and got a cheap flat-screen at Suning, and I have a stack of DVDs from my favorite DVD store off Andingmen, every American movie or TV show you could want. I’ve got take-out menus from half a dozen restaurants, and right at the end of the alley there’s a great jiaozi place and some snack stands, plus there’s a tiny store about the size of my bathroom that sells toilet paper and Yanjing beer and a bunch of snack foods, including my favorite spicy peanuts, that’s just across from the entrance to my apartment complex.

So it’s not like I really have to leave my apartment all that much right now. Or go very far if I do.

It’s just that I can only take so much of my mom without a break, and I’ve about reached my limit.

“Ellie, do you know where’s the best place for me to find peanut butter?” she asks from the doorway to my bedroom. “And chocolate chips?”

“Any of the foreign supermarkets’ll probably have them,” I say. I’m sitting on my bed with my laptop propped on a pillow on my legs. I don’t really look up. She’s always asking questions like this, and I admit I tune them out a lot of the time.

“Really? Because I went to . . . what’s the name of that French one? Carrefour? And they had peanut butter, but it was chunky and I need smooth. And I didn’t see any chocolate chips at all.”

“I don’t know,” I mutter. “You could always buy chocolate bars and hit them with a hammer.”

    “I guess I could.”

Now I do glance away from my screen. There’s my mom, her streaked, bleached hair rising in a halo of static, wearing a SunRise T-shirt (I'VE FOUND MR. RIGHT AND HE'S PERFECT! ISAIAH 62:5) and sweats, solid through the middle like a pound cake, the bramble-rose tattoo above her elbow sagging a bit, which is what happens with a tat inked twenty-five years ago.

“Aren’t you cold?” I ask, because even with the radiators on I’m wearing a sweatshirt.

She snorts. “Not right now. I’ve got my own heat.” She mimes fanning herself. “Hot flashes.”

    Like I needed to know.

“The thing is, I want to make my special chocolate-chip cookies for Andy,” she continues, cheeks flushing.

And that’s when I know I’ve got to get out of Beijing: That nice Mr. Zhou next door has become Andy.

Given my mom’s track record with men, no good can come of this.

“Maybe try Walmart,” I mutter, and turn back to my laptop.

    I love my mom.

Seriously, I really do. She did the best she could do with raising me, which maybe wasn’t always very good, but she comes through when it counts, like after I got blown up in the Sandbox, for example, leaving my leg busted in too many places to count and the rest of me not much better.

It’s just that a month now, living in my apartment in Beijing? That wasn’t what I had in mind when she said she wanted to come and visit me.

“Just to see how you’re doing,” she’d said, “since you don’t have time to come home.”

This of course was a lie on my part. I didn’t want to come home. Long story.

After a couple of weeks, where I did my best to show her the tourist sites—the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, the Great Wall, the Silk Market for fake Prada, and the world’s largest IKEA store—she showed no sign of going anywhere, other than to the guest room in my apartment by the Gulou subway station, which used to be my office. I finally asked, “So, Mom, when’s your flight home again?”

“I’m not sure,” she said. “It’s really up to you.”

    “What about work?”

“Well…” She hesitated. As I recall, she twisted her hands together. “The job didn’t really work out.”

It’s not her fault, I tell myself now. She worked hard for years. It’s not her fault that the U.S. economy is in the toilet, that she’s fifty-one years old and no one wants to hire her for anything. Not her fault that Refinancing Roulette didn’t pay off. The condo was a shithole anyway. Sometimes it’s even sort of cool having her here, like when she makes tacos, cooking being an activity at which I suck.

But I seriously need some away time from her right now.

“Don’t talk to me about Jesus,” I said about three days after she got here, Jesus being one of the things that we used to have in common but that pretty much got blown up, along with the rest of my life, in Iraq. Mostly she’s been pretty good about it, but every once in a while Jesus slips out.

For example: “You know, that nice Mr. Zhou next door belongs to a church. And I think it’s Christian, more or less. They worship Jesus anyway. He invited me to attend their service. Would you like . . . ?”

    “No thanks.”

Like I’m going to go to some weird-ass Chinese underground house church, featuring Brother Jesus Christ of the Righteous Thundering Fist, or what have you.

Like I’d set foot inside Sunrise, for that matter.

Sunrise is the church that my mom and me used to go to in Arizona. It’s a big church, in this fake-adobe complex that always reminded me of an Indian casino. But I still used to believe in it all. Take comfort in Reverend Jim’s air-conditioned sermons. Snap my what would jesus do? rubber bracelet against my wrist when I needed an invisible helping hand.

When people talk about how your faith gets tested, they always say that trials make your faith stronger. What they don’t say is that sometimes faith just dissolves like desert sand between your fingers.

Love this series!
By Catherine McKenzie
When ex-pat and Iraq War vet Ellie McEnroe is contacted by her old army buddy to help track down his missing brother, Ellie figures she can give some peace of mind to an old friend and see some more of her adopted home, China. What follows is a suspenseful and often surprising ride through back alleys, dumpling shops, the art world and virtual reality.

I really enjoyed Ellie's first adventure in Rock Paper Tiger, and it was nice to see Brackmann come back to her here. Ellie is the perfect mix of tough, funny, vulnerable and sarcastic, and she always takes us on fascinating tours of China while solving compelling mysteries. I can't wait to see what Ellie (and Brackmann) will get up to next.

Welcome back Ellie!
By Indigo Jen
Lisa does for thrillers & China what Cara Black does for thrillers & Paris! What a relief to read a great, well-written story with a character you're actually rooting for! Ellie is perfect in her fully flawed imperfection, and the story kept me on the edge of my seat - will she find Jason? What is he really up to? And will we find out more about the mysterious disappearance of Zhang? I absolutely fell in love with one of the characters Ellie meets in her quest, and reluctantly liked a few others. I particularly enjoyed each time she sized up her current situation (and her poor battered body), determined that it was clearly in her best interest to give up the search... -and continued her quest, anyway. And in the midst of it all, she even manages to rescue Mi Mi - how can you not want to hang out with this awesome chick? The food policy issue with the GMOs was quite topical; one that needs to be addressed more and more, but Lisa does not hit us over the head with this issue or preach at us. She just lays out possibilities of what is happening - and what could happen. And OMG Xingfu Cun had me googling all the other replicas in China; mind boggling! I cannot wait for book 3 to come out, solve some still mysterious plot twists, discover more about China, but most of all, to reunite with this great character Lisa has brought into our lives.

Relax and Enjoy the Wild Ride...
By Ken Coffman
Brackmann's latest novel is masterful--she delivers a rich reading experience. Her voice is solid and confident as she immerses us in the crazy patchwork quilt of modern China. Physically and emotionally damaged Iraq war veteran Ellie McEnroe experiences an unfolding PTSD as she planes, trains and automobiles across the vast Chinese landscape. I can't recommend this book highly enough as we eagerly await her next, which won't arrive a moment too soon.
