One Sweet Pancake Recipe

"Those Nutter Butters are going to need milk." That's the first sentence of my novel, Escape Theory, and for me it was the perfect place to meet freshman Devon Mackintosh. The cookies are the last remnant Devon has to remind her of living at home with her mother when she's newly stranded in this foreign boarding school world. She and her mom used to share the cookies while watching Grey's Anatomy, and her mom joked about "Save one for Derek" in case McDreamy ever happened upon their house one night.
For Devon, not having milk readily available to dunk her cookies like she always did with her mom is a harsh culture shock, but meeting Hutch and taking on this Nutter Butter mission with him is the kind of McDreamy moment her mom always prepared her for. As a legacy student at Keaton, Hutch is already comfortable enough with boarding school to ignore the rules and sneak into the school kitchen at night. What turns into a simple quest for a cold pitcher of milk quickly becomes an overnight adventure Devon will never forget.
For me, pancakes are one of the first things I learned to cook on my own. I used to like making them when I had slumber parties, or getting my mom to make them into fun shapes. Mickey Mouse-shaped pancakes were popular in our household. My brother showed me how to make chocolate-chip pancakes, which blew my mind as an eight year old. In the book, Devon is a girl somewhat stranded at sea. She's homesick, but would never admit it. There's something about Hutch that is so immediately comforting to her, and making pancakes together struck me as just enough of a quirky yet sweet adventure to have together. And of course, you have to add the now-integral Nutter Butters to said pancakes.
In writing the book I don't think I planned on Hutch and Devon making these pancakes. Originally they were just going to share a package of cookies. But, Hutch had other plans. I've never tried Nutter Butter pancakes until about a year ago, after Hutch turned me onto them. But I've played with the recipe ever since, and here's one to try at home:
Hutch's Nutter Butter PancakesMix together:
1 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup milk
1 egg
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
4-8 Nutter Butter Cookies, crumbled by hand.
Pinch of cinnamon
1tablespoon of peanut butter
1/2 of chocolate chips
Stir until flour and ingredients all mixed, some lumps are okay. Pour into griddle. Cook each side for roughly a minute and a half. Serve with syrup and butter, and of course, a glass of milk. Enjoy.

Escape theory is a psychological term used to explain why people “engage in self-destructive actions.” In this debut novel from Froley, it is difficult to know to which character the theory is being applied: Jason “Hutch” Hutchins, Keaton School legacy and golden boy who has inexplicably committed suicide, or Devon Mackintosh, the financial aid student among millionaires who is trying to pad her application to Stanford by serving as the school’s first peer counselor. As Devon sits in session with Hutch’s devastated friends, she starts unraveling a mystery, motivated by instinct and an unrequited love for Hutch. It is never clear why Devon and Hutch, who we are told had a strong connection based on a single shared experience freshman year, let that connection slip away so easily. But it is a central point to the plot, and the reader needs to believe it to accept Devon’s behavior as the story progresses. Different and Good.

Devon has always been on the outside at the boarding school she attends. She decides to sign up as a peer counselor to add some extra padding to her college application. She thinks it will be an easy job but a student called Hutch commits suicide and Devon soon learns many secrets from the kids she is counselling. She does know Hutch as she had a fun night with him years ago when she first came to the school. What she knows from that night and what she hears leads her to believe Hutch would never kill himself and she believes he was murdered. Now she tries to track down who did it and why.
I really enjoyed this book as it really is a mystery. Most people believe Hutch did it to himself and doubt Devon cause after all she really wasn't one of his friends. She tries her best to track down his history these last few years at school and she really finds out more than she ever would have known about him. She also knows the Hutch that noone else knew the one who told her things he didn't anyone else. I like seeing the moments between Devon and Hutch in flashbacks. You get to see a different side of her and a different side to Hutch. Devon does manage to get a few friends from her counselling job even if some of them don't believe her about Hutch and want her to mind her own business. She never backs down from her belief and often gets into bad situations. This story does draw you in cause with all you hear about teens it is quite believable and you never really know what is going to happen to the end.

Stunning novel

My Thoughts:
I originally got this book via NetGalley but was unable to finish it. However, the first chapters alone had me HOOKED so once I was able to buy it, I was excited to get back to it. There was something incredibly intense about Devon and Hutch, I had to know what really happened to him.
The story starts with the moment they shared together in Freshman year. This moment, involving Nutter Butters and pancakes, is so beyond incredible. In between what is going on at present, we hear bits and pieces of that day. This is what attached me to Devin and Hutch. Especially Hutch. Why? Because the things he said to her that day resonated with me big time. Like these:
“Because I figure there's two kinds of people in the world. The ones who do everything that's laid out for them, the supposed-tos, and then there's the people that look above it and do what they want to do. I prefer the latter, but maybe that's just me. A not-supposed to.”
“I just like the idea of looking back at my life and feeling like I made different choices than everyone else, you know? Most people are inherently boring if you really dig deep. They don't want much, they don't veer from their chosen path, and they're generally scared of change. I don't know, at least that's how my grandfather tells it. I don't want to be like fifty and realize that I was one of those people who didn't bother to think outside the box.”
And that's not all. There was something infinitely amazing about their connection that day. It was like this perfect moment in time. Inescapable in its perfection. I get chills thinking about it.
Back to the present... As she conducts the therapy sessions with her peers, she begins to put pieces together. Based on what she learned of him that one day, and what she's gathering now, she just knows that Hutch couldn't possibly kill himself. She knows it's up to her to find out the truth because everyone else seems convinced that it was suicide. Throughout this ordeal in the aftermath of his death, she deals with a lot--having to console Hutch's friends and attempting to come to terms with it herself. And in the end, she does find out the truth.
Escape Theory was a stunning novel. It delves deep into the way people are and what they become when they are placed in certain situations. The romance between Devon and Hutch... simply beautiful. Margaux Froley kept me entranced by their story, from their moment to their last moment. It tore me up and sewed me back together again. Very impressive and a must read.

Great YA Novel

This is definitely and YA novel it it's plot, characters, and the way it's written. Usually I'm not a fan. But in this case, it's not a bad thing. It's a boarding school mystery, something totally out of my usual genre but I loved it.
The main character, Devon, is not particularly compelling, but that's okay. The plot drives this novel forward as well as it's other characters. My favorite character, Hutch, is already dead when the books starts but the author does a fantastic job keeping him interesting and making the reader fall in love with him. The supporting characters are actually quite compelling, even the one-dimensional ones. They are definitely realistic and relatable.
However my favorite part of the book wasn't the plot or the characters, it was the depiction of West Coast boarding school life. The author is an alumna of my current school, the one that Keaton is loosely based on. And can I just say, she hit the nail on the head. The Paul Simon song, "Kodachrome" that's been my and my friend's song since freshman year. The kid who never wears shoes to class or the guys playing LAX on the lawn or the seniors hanging out on their balconies or the boys who take a yukon surfing every morning. Even the carvings on the wall of dorm rooms, remnants of it's previous inhabitants. "We're all half-awake in a fake empire" Yes. Preach it. She even got the types of people right. The legacies, the rich girls, the local day students, the international students, scholarship kids, everything. I like how she makes the popular guys who are supposed to be jerks, actually good guys (like Hutch or Matt) and how she makes the guys who are supposed to be the nice guys, actually bad people (like Grant).
Overall, this was a great book that I'm glad I read. It's a fast read, I read it in one sitting, but I couldn't put it down. Definitely better than your average YA novel, and definitely something different. I fully recommend it.
