About the Author
Bob Sharples has been meditating and using Buddhist principles in his work since 1975 and since 1991 has been a therapist in private practice. He is a trained lawyer and former school teacher, and he has studied Buddhist meditation extensively with Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche. Since 1991 he has led stress-reduction and healing courses for the seriously ill and their families as well as for Vietnam veterans. He is married with three children and lives in Melbourne, Australia.

A good place to start

As a yoga teacher, I make meditation a priority in my classes. But often, students still find themselves unsure of how to meditate on their own. Sometimes a class isn't enough - and a reference can be a godsend. This book is such a blessing. Bob Sharples has written a book that does spell out "Meditation And Relaxation In Plain English". There is no new age fluff, no religious mumbo jumbo, nothing over your head - this is a simple and straightforward guide that allows the reader to develop the skills necessary for a daily meditation.
Sharples shares his thoughts on why a person should meditate, how to start, and how to deepen your mindfulness. Many nice, simple meditations are sprinkled throughout the book. I especially liked the section on "Meditations For Transforming Difficult Situations". These have been very empowering for me as my family has dealt with a loss this year and it has been hard to cope. The information from this section alone is worth the price of the book. It is very powerful stuff.
Sharples knows what he is talking about he's been meditation for 30 years and leading stress reduction and healing courses. I would also like to recommend "Meditation For Life" by Martine Batchelor as a companion to this book. Both books should bring light to your pratice.

...and the haze disappeared

This concise and well written book goes a long way in demystifying the oftentimes inscrutable subject of meditation. It shows us that even if you don't think somethings happening in meditation, it is, just below the surface where the subconscious mind percolates. It will happen...just learn to be present and "get out of the way."

I really enjoyed this book. I did'nt know a thing about Meditation and Bob walks you through very well and he explains the different types of meditation in simple easy to understand steps. I would highly recommend this Book.
