ELIZABETH S. D. ENGELHARDT, Associate Professor of American Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, writes and studies food, gender, race, and class in the southern United States. She and eleven of her graduate students set out to study the life and culture of barbecue in central Texas. They’re a diverse group that includes native Texans, people from other barbecue strongholds of the U.S. South, a Chicagoan, and even a couple of northeasterners. They all share a passion for listening to stories, debating and trying to understand American cultures, and eating lots of barbecue.

Great book.

This is a fantastic book.

Broken into essays on different aspects of central Texas barbecue this book gets into the cracks of the culture which fostered and made barbecue in this region of the counry what it is.

Highly recommended for people who want to understand why Texas barbecue is the fascinating cross cultural mishmash that it is today.

Barbecue is the ultimate American peasant food which breaks down and transcends economic, class, and racial differences.

This is not a book for people looking for recipes but plenty of important teqnique is discussed.

Barbecue History and Culture at its Finest

I found this book to be a novel approach to the subject of barbecue. As a long time foodie and a native Texan who grew up grillin', it was a fascinating to see an exploration of the culture of central Texas smoker cooking from so many different angles. From barbacoa to brisket, the subject is explored from the standpoint of the numerous entrepeneurs that have made their lives cooking meat. These men and women range from black to Hispanic to the Germans and Czechs that settled in Central Texas. Their stories are engaging and their spirit are beautifully captured in the great photography in the pages of this book. The material was collected by students and faculty of the American Studies Department at the University of Texas. Remiscent of the books of Margaret Visser or even Peter Mayle, I highly recommended it to anyone who is interested in the history and culture of food.

Profusely illustrated throughout, this is a superbly researched, deftly written, and impressively presented American history as reflected through that enduringly popular culinary phenomena called 'the barbecue'.

Great Reference For Your Library!

I have dozens books on energy medicine that takes a specific focus and only concentrates on that. This is one of the best books I have seen that explains what energy medicine is and covers all the different types of energy medicine and allows you to investigate further that ones that interest you. I especially found the "Zip Up Exercise" on page 61-67 very helpful for myself and patients. It explains how and why you may be helping in an unhealthy way and how to protect yourself. I also found the "Packs and Oils" list by Edgar Cayce on page 90 beneficial for different ailments. He has 32 other "Packs and Oils" protocols, not just the castor oil pack. The personal stress assessment on page 130 is an excellent resource to use to determine the stress level of your patient and how they are coping. The Shealy Acupuncture Rings on page 30-37 and 201-204 is an excellent overview of his protocols that help balance the energenic system in a different way. Dr. Shealy's review of spiritual healers and his own experience with them on page 276-287 is a good read for anyone who wants an honest and researched opinion of it. This is just the highlights of the book that impacted me. There are many other chapters that you might find helpful and insightful. This is not a comprehensive book on energy medicine, but an excellent review of all the experiences Dr. Shealy has encountered in his many decades of research and empirical findings. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that is a beginner or veteran of the energy medicine world. Dr. Ken Kinakin D.C.

Another Shealy Treasure

I've made "Energy Medicine" the latest addition to my Dr. C. Norm Shealy library. It is an appealing and practical compilation of Dr. Shealy's earlier research with many updates and additions. I have long been an admirer of Dr. Shealy's commonsense wisdom and of his blunt opinions about both the wise and witless components of modern medicine. In this book he continues to demonstrate his gift of blending scientific knowledge with an increasing number of alternative theories. His adventurous mind, growing sharper and more creative with the passing years, is delightful as well as awe-inspiring to me. His belief system seems to encompass nearly every holistic possibility in the preservation and progress of a healthy lifestyle by incorporating diet, exercise, thought patterns, energy healing, contemplative practices, electronics - in other words, the investigation of every modern discovery with the retention and honoring of links to ancient wisdom as well. I believe that's what "holistic" should really be: using our innate gifts and incorporating the new knowledge that emerges over time, ever-changing, ever-adapting, ever-growing. I feel this book is a valuable adjunct to anyone's practice of self-help and planetary, as well as personal, healing.

Captivating and Fresh

This play was captivating and fresh. It was set in an era when Jewish prejudice held high, but puzzled you in how it could be handled considering the different sides of an Israeli movement for justice from the British or Israeli perspectives. I'm not much for reading plays, but this was really enjoyable so I wished I could have seen the play. The book arrived in perfect condition very quickly.

About the Author
M. Ingrid Dvirnak has determined that her life s purpose is to communicate the messages of God through both spoken and written words in ways that her family and friends, church and denomination will be enriched to the glory of God.
She has served as the former editor of Baptist Leader magazine and as a consulting editor and writer for Judson Bible Journeys for Adults, published by Judson Press. She is the author of The Work of the Clerk (Judson Press) and co-author of Renewing God s People (American Baptist Home Mission Societies). Previously she was also the editor and program associate for American Baptist Women s Ministries in Valley Forge, PA. More recently she coordinated the communication efforts of the American Baptist Churches of the Rocky Mountains. She is currently retired, living in Elizabeth, Colorado.

Susan Gillies, MA, spent more than twenty years in leadership positions with American Baptist Churches USA, including directing the Ministry of the Laity in the Workplace program for National Ministries (now the American Baptist Home Mission Societies) and serving as Executive Minister of American Baptist Churches of Nebraska. In retirement, she now is a public speaker, newspaper columnist, consultant, and silversmith in her hometown of Omaha, Nebraska.

A Good Reminder

"Empowering Laity, Engaging Leaders: Tapping the Root for Ministry" is the third book in the "Living Church" series from Judson Press. Authors Susan Gillies and M. Ingrid Dvirnak work together to create a book that is not only practical but is full of examples from the local church. There are plenty of books out there to tell you all the things that are wrong with the American Church. There are few that offer any practical solutions or examples how these solutions have been put into practice. Gillies and Dvirnak willingly admit there is a weak local church leadership problem in many American churches, but they do not stop with doom and gloom. They offer some practical ways to encourage, maintain, and grow new and existing leadership within the church. One of their better insights is the helpful reminder that 99% of the church body are considered "laity" ie "non-clergy." And if meaningful long lasting ministry is going to happen it is going to be done by them. They also remind us that ministry is not only things that happen within the church or even things initiated by the local church. Instead most ministry is done in our everyday lives in our work places, homes, and social environments. Finally, one of the great contributions this book offers is the reminder that ministry is multi-generational. If the local church ever hopes to accomplish great ministry it must tap into all ages of leadership from children to youth to families to singles to senior adults to even the home bound. Everyone must be engaged. Each of these areas are elaborated upon with a set of helpful "steps" and a local church example for nearly every point along your journey toward fuller laity led local church ministry.

Valuable book for church leadership and for group study

"Empowering Laity, Engaging Leaders" was used as a group study in our church. It engendered great discussion which led to concrete suggestions to our church to become more fruitful. The book is full of actual stories of church situations, and contains very valuable suggestions for how to develop and grow leadership. It's greatest value lies in the emphasis on moving The Church to see ministry as the main goal, and to move church members outside the walls of the church building to make disciples for Jesus Christ.

User friendly

Deeply rooted in biblical spirituality, this book is readable and challenging. The authors' obvious commitment to the church and real-life experience in the church makes it more usable than many a book written by would-be church saviors. The lists are practical, the suggestions do-able and the pacing and style make it a fun trip. Chapter 3, with its 10 types of leaders, perfectly exemplifies Dvirnak and Gillies' playful approach to a serious subject. Read it and take it to your next church committee meeting!
