The Well of Stars, by Robert Reed

In The Well of Stars, Hugo award-nominated author Robert Reed has written a stunning sequel to his acclaimed novel Marrow. The Great Ship, so vast that it contains within its depths a planet that lay undiscovered for generations, has cruised through the universe for untold billions of years. After a disastrous exploration of the planet, Marrow, the Ship's captains face an increasingly restive population aboard their mammoth vessel.

And now, compounding the captains' troubles, the Ship is heading on an irreversible course straight for the Ink Well, a dark, opaque nebula. Washen and Pamir, the captains who saved Marrow from utter destruction, send Mere, whose uncanny ability to adapt to and understand other cultures makes her the only one for the job, to investigate the nebula before they plunge blindly in. While Mere is away, Pamir discovers in the Ink Well the presence of a god-like entity with powers so potentially destructive that it might destroy the ship and its millions.

Faced with an entity that might prevent the Ship from ever leaving the Ink Well, the Ship's only hope now rests in the ingenuity of the vast crew . . . and with Mere, who has not contacted them since she left the Ship...

With the excitement of epic science fiction adventure set against a universe full of wonders, the odyssey of the Ship and its captains will capture the hearts of science fiction readers.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. As it sails the galaxy, the Great Ship (introduced in 2000's Marrow) meets an opponent worthy of its Jupiter-like size in Reed's taut sequel. Pitted against an entity that has sculpted its own dark cloud nebula called the Inkwell, the Ship's human captains and their nonhuman allies engage in a duel of wits and strength that drains gas giants and turns black holes into weapons. Washen, second in command but first in authority, must prepare the Great Ship for the encounter with the Inkwell. Washen's lover, Pamir, sets off in a streakship to confront the nebula's dominant species, the polyponds. Unraveling the dark nebula's secrets requires Washen to uncover some of the Great Ship's mysteries as well. The infinite depths of space are well matched by the all-too-human depths of Reed's characters, who range from near-deity to damaged fosterling, but must all face the problem of resolving conflicts between individual desires and communal needs. Having body-rebuilding immortality genes only gives them that much more time to debate the issue (as well as catching the unwary reader with quick-cut jumps of decades in a sentence). This literary SF novel works at all levels, from the big action sequences and mind-expanding concepts to the quiet, reflective moments. Agent, Merrilee Heifetz at Writers House. (Apr. 12)

Great imagination, but ultimately unsatisfying
By George Ehrhardt
This book is filled with creative ideas. And not just neat-sounding names tossed around, but well-thought, plausible, yet extraordinary things. The Great Ship and many of its components, for example, the mechanics of immortal human life, and the contents of the Dark Nebula. At its best, this book thrives on Big Things--it reminded me of the first half of Vernor Vinge's _Fire upon the Deep_ . I'm not sure the obvious comparison with Brin or Niven is warranted, though. because I had some problems with the book.

1) The characters all had depth, but never seemed to change during the course of the book. Maybe that was a deliberate choice when dealing with characters 1000's of years old--is there any change after your 10000th birthday? It's an interesting philosophical question, and a plausible answer, but unfortunately, it makes the book less satsifying. BTW, the earlier reviews are right about how strangely detached the characters are--their world and 10000-year existence are about to end and none of them seem particularly upset about it.

2) The ending is profoundly disappointing. Without spoiling it, let me just say that the ship goes into a Dark Nebula and faces a Threat. I expected something standard--the Threat is dangerous, almost does them all in, but somehow they beat it. Then the author adds in a second strand--maybe the good guys can convince the Threat not to kill them in a creative way (the book's dust jacket mentions this plot)--and I thought, sure, sounds good. The characters work hard at both of these strategies and book is going along well. But them, suddenly, we learn that actually neither of these are right--in the last 25-50 pages a new and badder Threat^2 suddenly appears, and a new Deus ex Machina appears and deals with the threat^2 without any intervention by the characters. The reader is left wondering "Huh? Why did I read the first 280 pages?" This leads to the next point...

3) My point #2 is somewhat overstated. There _are_ clues to point to the emergence of both Threat^2 and the Deus ex Machina. But the author's style is something like "Then, Mere suddenly understood the real threat. -cut jump to a totally different topic so the reader is left wondering "Huh? What did she understand?-" My PhD isn't in physics or psychology, but I don't think I'm much dumber than the average reader, and frankly, while the author may think he foreshadows events satisfactorily with this style, he doesn't.

The disappointing thing is that if he had just dropped both Threat^2 and the DeM, it would have been a really enjoyable book--my point about characters aside, the book is wonderfully imagined and (until the last 50 pages) the action moves along at an exciting pace. But the ending left me feeling so let down that it spoiled the experience for me. I might go to the library to read his other books, but not right away.

Sequel to Marrow Leaves Issues Open Till Next Book
By Patrick J. Sullivan
MARROW was an excellent stand-alone novel that left open the possibility of a sequel. WELL OF STARS is that sequel, but it is only the second chapter of what is now planned as a trilogy. It does not stand by itself anymore that The Empire Strikes Back does, and I think that accounts for a lot of the reader dissatisfaction with the book's ending. This should probably have been made clear on the book's dust jacket, but TOR has done this with other series books as well, downplaying or disguising the fact that they are merely installments.

Even taking into account the fact that Well of Stars is not supposed to clear everything up, I found it an unsatisfying read. Human (or alien or AI) characterization has never been Reed's strong point. What made Marrow a success were the worlds of Marrow and the Great Ship. It was sense-of-wonder sf with a vengeance.

That sense of wonder is lacking in this sequel. Readers do become somewhat more familiar with the Great Ship, but that cannot carry a novel for 300+ pages. Marrow itself is talked about, but the world is not actually on stage. The new world to be explored here is one external to the ship, a nebula called the Inkwell. The Inkwell and its inhabitants are somewhat intriguing, but not nearly to the extent that Marrow was in the prior book.

The Great Ship is headed into the Inkwell, and returning characters Pamir and Washen mount a scouting program to determine the true nature of the nebula. Other returning characters from Marrow include Washen's son Locke, whose interest is in unraveling the origin and purpose of the Great Ship and its cargo. This was to me the most interesting part of the whole novel, but Locke's conclusions occupy only a couple of pages total.

During the course of Marrow, some of Reed's better characters such as Diu, Miocene, and Till were lost. Characters new to Well of Stars are not nearly as compelling as the lost ones. The most important new character is a human with a strange (even by Great Ship standards) past named Mere. The character of Mere kind of undercuts that of Washen as her strength is what Washen's was in Marrow: sizing up new species. This is an important ability in Well of Stars, as the Inkwell is inhabited by an enigmatic collection of species.

Readers who like definitive endings would probably do best for themselves by waiting until book 3 comes out and reading Well of Stars and it together. Reed was four or five years between Marrow and Well of Stars, and if it takes another four or five years to get us to the story's end, I know I won't remember WOS then nearly as well as I remember Marrow four years after reading it. There's just not much about WOS that sticks with you, unlike with Marrow.

BTW, although I dislike book reviews that comment on other people's reviews instead of the book, I feel it is necessary to set the record straight regarding some very misleading and inaccurate statements made within one review. Readers of Marrow will recall that Mere was not the "hero" of the Marrow incident; in fact she did not appear in that book at all. The Inkwell is a nebula, not a black hole. Many other statements within the review in question are distortions of what is really going on; I don't want to get too specific because of the spoiler factor. Just don't let that very misleading review affect your decision as to whether to read this book or not; I do not believe its author actually read the book.

Learn more about Mere from THE WELL OF STARS
By bookhound9
One of the primary characters in THE WELL OF STARS is "Mere," as you can read from the book's description above. But from what I understand, the book doesn't really tell us who Mere is, and how she came to be on the Great Ship. However, indie publisher Golden Gryphon Press has published a chapbook by Robert Reed that is actually the Mere origin story. It's titled (profoundly) MERE -- very cool story (Mere is actually an immortal being!), great cover art, and a nice collectable -- and is available from goldengryphon.com. Check it out.

The Cast of Amontillado
By Donna Clark
I've read a few of Edgar Allan Poe's stories and found them very intriguing, to say the least. One of my favorites being "The Cast of Amontillado." Poe really brings out the darker side of one's personality in his stories. I think he expresses his hardship growing up through his writings. Once you pick up one of Poe's books, you would want to read more and more. His stories are mystefying and frightening. They may make you want to laugh and cry all at the same time. If you are really in the mood to get lost in darkness, mystery and intrigue, pick up one of Poe's books. You'll be glad you did.

One of horror's finest...
By A Customer
For decades people have read, and re-read the works of Edgar Allan Poe--each time leaving the reader to walk away with a chill in the spine, and a deep sense that there are some things in life, however imagined, that are simply terrifying. Poe speaks through the heart of his own woes, his own terror...making his characters breathe life into their stories. Perhaps one of my favorites by this master of the macabre is "The Tell-Tale Heart," a maddening and sometimes angering ride through a deranged mind. This is an historical dance through the dark, perhaps even the most pivotal root in the life and love of the horror story. Poe worked not from the concepts of traditional monsters, but rather stirred the monsters haunting his protagonists...there are few who can lay claim to this level of suspense, drama, or who have ever invoked genuine fear in their readers. Poe does it with cunning, and seeming ease. Highly recommended reading.

18 Best Stories By Edgar Allan Poe review...
By A Customer
This book, by Edgar Allan Poe, is made up of 18 short stories that are considered the best. Most of his stories are based on death, terror, mystery, murder, and fear. One of the stories I really like is "The Tell - Tale Heart," and it's about a mad guy who is called upon an old man for care. Later, he kills the old man because he got too scared of his eyes and he hides the corpse under the planks of the house. When the police come and search through the house, he starts hearing strange heart beats from the place where the corpse is hidden. He gets nervous and the heart beats get louder and louder until he thought that the police could hear the heart beats and thought that the police were making a mockery of his horror. So he gets angry right away and tears up the planks saying he did it and telling them to stop making a mockery of him. It's a story based on extreme fear and horror of the protagonist. The final part is pretty ironic and has lots of suspense in it. There are more stories as good as this one I wrote about. I really enjoyed reading this book and I rate this as 10 out of 10. I would strongly recommend this book. I like these stories for different reasons: I always liked these kind of stories, the author has an incredible use of language for description, and it builds up suspense throughout the story. It's hard to predict what will happen next and it contains strong irony. I could say that these stories are the ones you must read at least once and, in fact, the best ones I've read.

Exceptionally deep and broad coverage of entrepreneurship strategies
By Arch G. Woodside
Brenes and Haar and their colleagues include a great amount of evidence to support their claims on how entrepreneurship strategies are getting done in specific Latin American countries. Mexico, several Central and South American governments are liberalizing "doing business" actions and doing so transparently (e.g, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Peru), The book includes more than 60 figures and more thirty tables. The focus is on the firm and the issue, "How can the firm not only survive in the marketplace but thrive, even under adverse conditions?" The book provides 300 pages to answer this question with in-depth examinations of Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru, and Veneezuela. Each of the ten chapters include full citations of sources-- a very worthwhile step. A 6+ page index is also helpful. The full paragraph biographical sketches on each of the 16 contributors indicates a blend of academicians with heavy consulting experience and entrepreneurs with heavy government agency-enterpreneur interface experience. The assessements are concrete an bold--"The most pro-market country in Latin America is Brazil" (p. 11). With hard evidence to back up these assessments. An A+ go-to book on how executives execute entrepreneurships well -- and badly -- and how governments nurture --and sometimes thwart enterprise activities. I really enjoyed the book's going deep on each country-- one country per chapter usually. This approach works well because each country has nuances that encourage and discourage entrepreneurial success--though an in-depth overview on the enterpreneur implemented strategies across all countires is available in Chapter 1--56 pages with good and bad news about doing business country-by-country covered.

A timely and very much needed book
By Ricardo Ernst
Brenes and Haar have given us the definitive book yet on entrepreneurship in Latin America, covering the challenges, opportunities, evolution and outlook. The scope, depth and richness of the volume, along with the writing style, are most impressive, as they and their expert chapter writers examine the forces, factors and drivers of entrepreneurship in all major market countries in Latin America (along with Costa Rica where technology entrepreneurs are thriving). The case studies are fascinating and most informative, and the charts, tables and figures in the chapters are highly illuminating. I highly recommend "The Future of Entrepreneurship in Latin America" to both academic and practitioner audience and greatly look forward to future works by the authors.

Tremendous!
By Christopher J Robertson
This book by two highly respected Latin America experts provides a refreshingly practical perspective of globalization and the opportunities and threats that have surfaced in recent years. The context and user-friendly tables and charts make this book easy to navigate and the managerial tone easy to read. I was also very pleased to see rich coverage of the social implications of globalization and economic transition. The deep dive chapters into specific countries yield a tremendous amount of information in a cogent and understandable format. Overall, I would highly recommend this book-there is something in it for everyone!

Jammet's of Dublin, by Alison Maxwell

From 1901 to 1967 this Dublin restaurant - so famous in its day that letters simply addressed 'Jammet's, Europe' reached their destination within a week - was the resort of actors, politicians, artists and literati, film stars, judges, journalists, doctors, chancers and characters, gourmets and oenophiles, who passed through its doors in search of superb food and wine, or banter in the bars. Praised by Egon Ronay for its 'space, grace and charm', the 'formidable list of culinary delicacies' and the 'numerous, very great clarets', this legendary French dining establishment had no peer in Ireland, and gave occasion to many a tale: Jack B. Yeats, sketching a bucking horse on a birthday menu; Liam O'Flaherty, giving rein to his; Patrick Kavanagh, in search of a mistress; Maeve Binchy, celebrating her Leaving Cert.; Garech Browne, watching Nicholas Gormanston rescue Seán O'Sullivan from immersion in a bowl of pea-green soup; Micheál MacLiammóir, being upstaged by one of the staff. Pages from the Visitors' Book with its autographs are redolent of a golden age: Maureen O'Hara, Bertie Smyllie, Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, Maurice Jarre, Ingrid Bergman, Elizabeth Taylor, the Beverley Sisters. John Lennon drew a self- portrait and commented, 'The other three are saving up to come here!' Added to the visual mix are original menu cards and recipes, a 200-strong wine list with suppliers and prices, and fabulous foods: a rich iconography affording rare insights into the social and cultural life of Dublin during the sixty-six years of Jammet's treasured existence. At the heart of this lively narrative is a truffle of memoir by Shay Harpur, who rose from cloakroom attendant to sommelier in five short years, and recounts a day-in-the-life of Jammet's with vivid particularity. A closing essay by the late Patrick Campbell celebrates the warmth and idiosyncracy of its famed back bar.

Excellent summary
By KateR
This was an easy-to-use tool for managing inpatient diabetics. It covered most of the dilemmas we see during hospitalization including use of glucocortoids, enteral feedings, TPN, when and how to resume outpatient medications, and how to deal with oral diabetic medications as applied to the inpatient setting.

This will serve as an excellent reference for current and future hospitalists and general practitioners. It also helped to guide my practice because it had suggestions for transitioning smoothly from inpatient to outpatient care.

Sword Play: Forgotten Realms (Netheril Trilogy Book 1), by Clayton Emery

Wizard's Wager

Thousands of years before the Age of Elminster, dragons rule the skies of Faerûn, and elves dominate the huge forests that cover the land. Only in the mighty, magical empire of Netheril are men a force to be reckoned with.

Bored and haughty in his midair castle, the Netherese mage Candlemas bets fellow wizard Sysquemalyn that a certain barbarian who has caught his eye can survive the most savage tests his friend -- and deadly rival -- can devise. The only rule: The tests must offer the subject some chance to survive, however slight.

Of course, "playing fair" is a concept as alien to the wizards of Netheril as "mercy."

But the subject of their wager, Sunbright Steelshanks of the Rengarth Tribe, has a mind -- and a will -- of his own. And Candlemas and Sysquemalyn are not the only players in this lethal game of swords and sorcery . . .

Action packed sword and sorcery
By Amazon Customer
Sword Play, the first volume in the Netheril Trilogy, is a fast-packed, hack and slash, sword and sorcery tale. The book immediately jumps into the action and continues almost non-stop throughout the book. There is an extended lull about a third of the way through the book which lasted a bit too long -- hence my rating of four stars instead of five.
After the lull ends, the action starts again with the meeting with the One King and his task to Sunbright, the barbarian main character. The basis for the story is two wizards placing a bet on the barbarian's survival. Eventually, the bet comes back to haunt them and they, in addition to Sunbright and his newfound companion Greenwillow, must try to right the wrongs caused by the bet.
Creatures abound in this one -- dragons, pit fiends, hordes of Nine Hells creatures, etc. It's a fun read, but don't look for much character development. Although the trilogy is now out-of-print, copies can still be found ...

"The horror had come home." (p.209)
By L Gontzes
Sword Play is set in the region of the Anauroch Desert in Faerun's North thousands of years in the past when the inhospitable desert was covered by lush forests and green fields, all part of the mighty Netheril Empire. The book deals with the ongoing adventures/torment of Sunbright, a northern barbarian, who finds himself the object of two Neth wizards' wagers and his efforts to break free from being a pawn in their schemes. His quest takes him from Netheril to Tinnainen (a border town captured by the One King; an up-and-coming regional player that challenges both the Neth Empire and Cormanthyr's Elves), all the way to the dreaded Nine Hells and back! Sword Play is the first of a triad of books comprising the Netheril Trilogy that deal with one of Toril's long lost ancient civilizations, and possibly the most powerful human empire to ever exist. The (priceless) Ruins of Myth Drannor adventure set describes how the Neth used to have the ability to cast 10th level wizard spells (!), which in turn was abused resulting in widespread destruction and in Mystryl (an early form of the goddess Mystra) placing restrictions on the weave so that spellcasters thereafter could only cast up to 9th level spells (and which constitutes "the present" reality).
Clayton Emery does a wonderful job of presenting essential knowledge relevant to Faerun, including customs, religion (Garagos, Tyche, Chauntea, (p.2) Moander (p.22), Selune-"She Who Guides" (p.147), Talos-"god of the tempests" (p.156), Mystryl (p.219), Shar (p.235), and the history of the peoples of Toril. His solid grasp of factual detail makes him capable of providing the necessary background needed to carry out the difficult task of writing Forgotten Realms novels, which is often missing from the work of many Fantasy authors. Moreover, the book is so incredibly well written and presented that the reader feels that they have been transported to another plane of existence and are actually present among the characters, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, and sensing what they sense.
Specifically, the description of the battle at Tinnainen was breathtaking: "Wrathburn wheezed, and flames shot from his nostrils. The stone gateposts ignited, even the granite threshold blistered. The guards shrivelled to charred twists dotted with molten metal. Screams sounded inside the gates as people's clothing and the thatch on houses ignited." (p.186) Moreover, Clayton Emery depicts the chaotic evil alignment through Sysquemalyn superbly; probably the best I have seen to-date. In addition, Chapters 14 and 15 provide excellent descriptions of the Nine Hells (Baator), especially page 231.
Clayton Emery is also well versed and very much in line with the D&D game and its rules such as in the case of describing the process of regeneration (p.43), the effects on a mage of the death of his familiar (p.271), and Planescape rules regarding the weakening of magic the farther away one gets from the prime material plane (or the plane of origin): "Mighty as the mages were, they'd been born in the material world, and this was Hell." (p.270) On pages 37 and 69 respectively, the author provides two more exceptional descriptions that help teleport the reader to Faerun, beside Sunbright and his companions: "The gaping jaws clamped down on his biceps, biting flesh to the bone. Candlemas screamed, then shrilled as the beast ripped down toward his elbow. Horror stricken, the wizard saw muscle and arteries stripped from his arm bone like a peel wrenched off an orange. The fiend bit again, and he heard its harsh teeth grate on bone-his. Then the bone snapped, parted, and the fiend fell back with Candlemas's right arm in its mouth," and "The grappler urped, then vomited hot, stinking ale and stomach juice all over the barbarian's shirt. That made Sunbright furious. Spitting out the howler's thumb, he gave a battle shriek that raised hackles and set dogs barking all over the village." As for the graphic descriptions found throughout the book, and especially on pages 200-201, 281, and 288-289 they are extraordinary indeed! Moreover, the author successfully conveys the pure decadence that is the Neth, especially through Chapter 6 with "the Hunt." Additionally, Clayton Emery provides for descriptions that facilitate the reader to visualize the scenes e.g. on page 252: "The sword's heavy nose penetrated deep, popping a black eye to spill gore, knocking the lemure to the ground with a split head," and on page 248 "Another, beating its wings at Sunbright's head, had its belly sliced so a loop of guts spurted loose," and "The sword sheared through a wrist, hacked toes from a foot, lopped off a wing." Furthermore, the author speaks truthfully when stating that: "The world was a hierarchy of lords ruling underlings. The trick was to ascend high and fast, and so have more underlings and fewer lords." (pp.60-61)
On the down side, on page 210, the author seems to slip up when Greenwillow exclaims: "Elves weren't supposed to fall in love with humans," before going on to state "With a shock, she realized she looked not like an elf, but like a human," (p.218) although she is a half-elf herself! Moreover, we never find out what her actual story is. An additional question that arises is whether the Elven High Court would have chosen a half-elf as its emissary? Furthermore, on page 241 there is mention of "Plagiarizing the Nine Hells," which is hardly a phrase one would encounter in a Fantasy novel. Nevertheless, these are just minor faults, which are overshadowed by the plot, the dialogues, and the author's wonderful style of writing that have resulted in one of the best Forgotten Realms novels that I have ever read; looking forward to the sequel: Dangerous Games.

Good Read

This was an entertaining book that I would read again. I felt that the only real draw backs came in the lack of information about the land and people that the story takes place in. A little more background information would have been nice. Also, what kind of a name is "Sunbright Steelshanks" for a barbarian? Shouldn't the name be more gutteral? Sunbright sounds like the name of a preistess of sune or some such thing. If you can get passed the name of the hero, and the general feeling of not really being familiar with the land it takes place in, then you will enjoy this book.
