In addition to photographing damselflies in the wild, the author and illustrator have developed a new process for illustrating each species by scanning preserved specimens and digitally painting them. The book also contains chapters on damselfly anatomy, life history, conservation, names, and photography, as well as a list of species that may eventually be discovered in Texas, state and global conservation rankings, seasonality of all species in chronological order, and additional resources and publications on the identification of damselflies.

About the Author
JOHN C. ABBOTT is Curator of Entomology for the Texas Natural Science Center at the University of Texas at Austin. He has published many papers on aquatic insects, including dragonflies and damselflies, and is the author of the more specialized volume Dragonflies and Damselflies of Texas and the South-Central United States.

One of the best EVER!!

This guide, along with Ed Lam's volume covering damselflies of the northeast, will definitely set the standard for field guides of ALL types for years to come.
A beautiful and compact book, with illustrations created by a combination of cutting-edge technology, it gives the casual and the serious damselfly enthusiast EVERYTHING needed to identify and appreciate these fine little creatures.
I own several of John Abbott's books, and he has outdone himself this time. Recommended without reservation

Excellent field guide

The Damselflies of Texas field guide by John Abbott is excellent. The Introduction is 48 pages long and covers a lot of useful information about damselflies and has lots of color photographs. The guide itself has great photos of both the dorsal and lateral views. There are color photos of the male appendages, not just drawings. The same is true for the female mesostigmal plates. There are photos of just the abdomens side by side for easier comparison.

Wonderfully done, will set the standard for damselfly guides for South Central U.S.

This beautifully illustrated "state of the art" field guide is a joy to thumb through with full color plates throughout. It contains ample images of male and female damselflies at all stages of adult maturity for all 77 damselflies that are known to occur in Texas (and surrounding regions). Author John C. Abbott, a recognized authority on both the dragonflies and damselfies of Texas, has truly provided a field guide worthy of its title. It will undoubtedly become the standard for use in the field or armchair. Its size makes it equally attractive and useful. Abbott has also packed it with a 'boat-load' of useful information from photographing, preserving, and collecting damselflies to providing useful conservation status information. I also like the abdominal size and color/markings plates of Bluets and Dancers and close-up photos comparison plates showing terminal appendages of males/females (Spreadwings) and female mesostigmal plates (very useful for in-hand identifications in the field). Overall, a job well done! With this field guide in hand, the novice and professional alike will be less intimidated to try their hand at identifying damselflies in the field.
