Good characters, great mood and excellent storytelling!
By P. George
I don't generally write reviews but in this case i had to.
A friend of mine that plays D&D with my group recommended that i check out this new book, primarily because i love the realms.

Wow!

The characters were inventive and surprisingly realistic in that you feel like you are right there in their heads when they are fighting someone. You also start to care for some more than others and are genuinely shocked when one or two die unexpectedly.

The mood being set was truely creepy. At times i thought i was reading something set in Ravenloft rather than the realms. The sights, sounds and even the use of local plantlife and animals really conveys a sense of intimacy with the surroundings.

Now the fun part, the storytelling.
Mr. Davis does a good job of telling multiple stories with the use of flashbacks and intertwining/mirroring some characters backstories to produce an effect not normally seen in the genre.

All in all i would say that i enjoyed this book and look forward to more books from Mr. Davis.
Wizards of the Coast please give this author more writing opportunities to prove that he could be a valuable member to their stable of great writers.

Great First Book!
By Stefan
This was an exceptional and highly entertaining read. Bloodwalk is the second in the Wizards series from Wizards of the Coast. The books standlone from each other and feature a particular "class" of wizard. This story centers around two characters, Quin, a Ghostwalker (for more on the Ghostwalker read Eric Scott de Bie's incredible book Ghostwalker) and Morgynn , a Blood Mage.

The book moves along at a fast, well written pace. The story moves from present to past to give the reader backstory and history on the characters. Some authors have a difficult time doing this but Davis performs it flawlessly. When reading these tranistions I was reminded of the Highlander TV series and its shift from present to past to tell the story.

If you like tragic heros and vile villains, this story is for you. I hope we can see more of Quin in the future.

A very disappointing novel
By Andy Gray
Bloodwalk by James P. Davis is the second book in a series of stand alone novels featuring the Wizards class. Novels have also been written featuring the Rogue, Priests, and Fighters classes as well. With these `class' books Wizards of the Coast seems to be giving new authors their first shot at writing Realms novels. I have really enjoyed some of these `class' novels, Ghostwalker by Erik Scott de Bie comes to mind as does Master of Chains by Jess Lebow. However, there have been some rather disappointing ones as well, Queen of the depths by Richard Byers and Blackstaff by Steven Schend. I am all for giving new authors a chance to hone their craft, however I think a new author need not be given such an all encompassing task of relating a huge story in one novel, ala Blackstaff. Sadly, I have to say I am lumping Bloodwalk into the category of disappointing novels.

The plot of this book seemed to really drag on and on for me. This may be due to how the author writes or the actual story. Normally I am one to read one hundred plus pages a night, yet, with this book I was lucky if I forced myself to read two chapters. There were a few things that occurred in this book that I simply thought why on earth is that in there? I like the concept of the blood magus, but I felt the concept was `pushed' on the reader. How many times does the reader need to be beaten over the head to know that the main character can `hear' the pulse of her victim? There are dream sequences featuring Morgynn that are so disjointed it felt like the binding of the book was out of wack and it should have been in a different place in the book. That feeling of disjointedness left me constantly having to think about the events and trying to reassess what was going on. The flow of the book, to me, did not lend itself well to reading. I think there may be a decent plot somewhere in this book, but quite honestly, I could not find it.

The characters in this book had a chance to be the redeeming quality. I have read several books where the plot is terrible, but the characters are well done and save the book. That is not so in this case. I simply did not care about the characters in this book. In fact, there is one case where a previous character in reintroduced towards the end of the book and I literally had no recollection of who this character was. They were so uninteresting the first time I didn't remember them, and this was a major point in the book! There is a Ghostwalker in this book and although that character does some `cool' things, the character itself is rather blah. Then there is a pair of sisters one an oracle and one a hunter. There was room for some fantastic dynamics between the two, but that never comes to fruition. I could go on, but I really don't want to come across as bashing this book. Suffice to say the characters are uninteresting and blah when they easily could have stolen this book and made it great.

There are moments in this book that I did enjoy, however, they are too few and far between to leave any lasting impact with me. Maybe, Mr. Davis did not have much control over what was to happen in this book. I am not one to make excuses for others nor do I think Mr. Davis would want me to. I am sure there are people out there who may enjoy this book, I am simply not one of them. However, I would be hard pressed to think of an instance where I would ever recommend this book to anyone. Thus far I have been disappointed in the Wizard class books that have been written. Both have come up well short of my expectations. The next one to be released is Darkvision by Bruce Cordell, maybe that can redeem this series of stand alone novels. Bloodwalk was severely lacking in my eyes.
