About the Author
Joseph Arpaia, MD, is a psychiatrist in private practice and the medical director of RainRock, a residential facility specializing in the treatment of eating disorders in Eugene, Oregon.
Lobssang Rapgay, PhD, is Director of UCLA's Classical Mindfulness-based Integrative Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety and Anxiety-related Psychosomatic Disorders program.
Tenzin Gyatso, the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, is the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people. He frequently describes himself as a simple Buddhist monk. Born in northeastern Tibet in 1935, he was as a toddler recognized as the incarnation of the Thirteenth Dalai Lama and brought to Tibet's capital, Lhasa. In 1950, Mao Zedong's Communist forces made their first incursions into eastern Tibet, shortly after which the young Dalai Lama assumed the political leadership of his country. He passed his scholastic examinations with honors at the Great Prayer Festival in Lhasa in 1959, the same year Chinese forces occupied the city, forcing His Holiness to escape to India. There he set up the Tibetan government-in-exile in Dharamsala, working to secure the welfare of the more than 100,000 Tibetan exiles and prevent the destruction of Tibetan culture. In his capacity as a spiritual and political leader, he has traveled to more than sixty-two countries on six continents and met with presidents, popes, and leading scientists to foster dialogue and create a better world. In recognition of his tireless work for the nonviolent liberation of Tibet, the Dalai Lama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. In 2012, he relinquished political authority in his exile government and turned it over to democratically elected representatives.
His Holiness frequently states that his life is guided by three major commitments: the promotion of basic human values or secular ethics in the interest of human happiness, the fostering of interreligious harmony, and securing the welfare of the Tibetan people, focusing on the survival of their identity, culture, and religion. As a superior scholar trained in the classical texts of the Nalanda tradition of Indian Buddhism, he is able to distill the central tenets of Buddhist philosophy in clear and inspiring language, his gift for pedagogy imbued with his infectious joy. Connecting scientists with Buddhist scholars, he helps unite contemplative and modern modes of investigation, bringing ancient tools and insights to bear on the acute problems facing the contemporary world. Real Meditation

This book describes a Tibetan Buddhist meditation. Unlike Zen Meditation, Chinese Meditation and most forms of Buddhist Meditation, which are non-intentional in nature, Tibetan Buddhist meditation is expressly "intentional" in nature and uses suggestions such as, "My face is soft and gentle". This book is divided into two parts. In the first part, the authors explain some general principles and teach 4 basic meditation practices that develop 5 core mental qualities. In the second part, you'll learn how to apply these basic techniques to improve your health, performance, relationship and spirituality. The inner activity of personal growth can only be observed by follolwing the inner experiences of someone at the meditation practice. To give you this perspective, the authors introduced you to Brian and Maria whose stories appear throughout this book. Brian and Maria are amalgams of the hundreds of people the authors have taught. The exposition of this book is clear, lucid and memorable. Read and digest this book and many aspects of your life will improve.

Great concise readable book for beginners

This is an instructional book for beginning meditators and others who may want to look at meditation from a different point of view. This book has been designed to be entirely non-sectarian. It is a book you can give your cousin, mother, rabbi, friend anyone who wants to start meditating for whatever reason. The book opens asking the reader to write down what their intentions for their meditation practice are. They then give the examples via two fictional composite characters, Maria and Joseph. The book goes step by step. Each step is well described and most importantly the reader is told what the purpose of each exercise is, e.g. attention etc. Then Maria and Joseph provide examples.It describes the goals of each step, what to look for and how to deal with obstacles. It's techniques span the gauntlet of meditation practices from mindfulness to autogenic relaxation to visualizations. While the techniques originate in the Tibetan tradition, as the book stands, only one familiar with Tibetan Buddhism would realize it.These are techniques that enhance attention, alertness and concentration and diminish anxiety and fatigue. That is something that all of us could use.
For American society today (ADD society) I feel it is best to learn attention first before doing unfocused meditation, we are unfocused and spaced out enough all ready, In fact, so much so that as a society we are losing our grounding.If you were studying with a teacher he or she would give you these practices one by one. Fortunately we are told what to look for so we know when to move on.
This book should be very helpful to those who are seeking to cope and excell in this troubling age.

Want to Change your Life?

I couldn't put this book down. I am a hypnotist and I love to meditate, but this gave me a whole new way that is goals oriented in which to do it. I love it! If you want to change your relationship, be more present, be more peaceful, lose weight and a whole lot more you'll be suprised at how much you can do just bypracticing what they teach you and in minutes a day. From a hypnotic standpoint, as a professional, I was VERY impressed on how the authors instruct the uses to use their minds for a change. AWESOME.
