From Publishers Weekly
As predictable as it may beAa coming-of-age ramble quest through a weird world where bonded human-animal pairs battle dread black magical forcesAthis launch novel for Forward's new fantasy trilogy steps out smartly from her earlier Villains by Necessity. Upon graduation from the College of Animism, where he seems to have majored in manure shoveling, 16-year-old, five-feet-tall Alex first seeks out his Anim, an empathetic animal that will allow him to detect and elude the magicians who are bent on destroying the rational-scientific Animists, believers that all things have souls. Alex's Anim turns out to be the tiny rat Mote, one of Forward's most appealing characters, who constantly preserves Alex from blundering into annihilation. Rigged out with the customary complement of companionsATemith, a world-weary, old scholar; a glamorous Princess Celine to adore from afar; a Pattonesque giant saurian generalAAlex and Mote take on the job of freeing the Rodeni, a small rodentlike race that has been enslaved for centuries by wicked Humani. Forward is capable of some luscious descriptive passages, especially in her scenes of the gloriously intelligent Delphini rollicking through sparkling tropical seas, and she draws both her people and nonpeople with taste and sympathy, leaving plenty of room for Alex's further adventures. From Library Journal
Sold to the College of Animism as a child, Alex graduates and embarks on a spirit quest to seek an animal to power his magic. His journey through a world inhabited by numerous nonhuman races involves him in a series of intrigues that result in the fall of a kingdom and the discovery of his own worth. Forward (Villains by Necessity) offers a fresh and imaginative view of magic and mayhem in this first book of a projected trilogy. Recommended for most fantasy collections.

Reminiscent of early Norton and Heinlein
By A Customer
Teenager Alex worries about his future now that he graduates from the College of Animists. He knows he must embark on a journey to find his Anim if he is to survive in a world filled with magicians desiring the annihilation of the Animists. However, the thought of the trek frightens him especially since his friends still have a few years before they begin their quest for the animal that they will share an empathic link with for life.
Alex meets his empathic other, Mote a tiny rat, but his search also places the two of them in the middle of a war between two small nations. Along with several traveling companions he met on his pilgrimage, Alex stands in the way of a malevolent being that wants mass destruction. Only Mote manages to keep Alex from blundering to his death as the small troupe struggles to save the lives of humans and animals.
Although the twin themes of a coming of age quest and a psychic link between humans and animals have been done many times in novels and movies, the charming charcaters keep the tale fresh. The story line is entertaining and exciting as the bungling Alex and his cohorts attempt the impossible. Though the humans are fully developed and interesting, Mote steals the show as the most intriguing rat since Ben. Eve Forward succeeds in turning Alex's journey into a genial fantasy that deserves sequels.

A break from the norm
By A Customer
I picked up "Animist" because I wanted something other than the now-cliche' dragons, paladins, elves and heroes defeating Ultimate Evil and bringing about world peace. After a while, all the fantasy paperbacks start to resemble each other. "Animist," though, broke that model. It's a single character-focused tale that holds your attention without the need for a lot of flash and bang, magic swords, curses and the like. And the conclusion ... well, I don't want to ruin it for the next reader, but it's safe to say that I felt it was a real life - not tidy, but satisfying just the same. Eve Forward's writing skills are easily above average; the story was pleasant to consume. But her voice lacks a unique personality or sparkle that would set it apart if not for the plot and setting (her take on magic "colleges" was refreshing). She's good now, but she reveals potential that will likely develop in her next book.

An entertaining, light little read.
By Jonathan Burgoine
Meet Alex, an "animist." He has abilities to sense into the magickal Oether, and see spirits and magick all around him. He has graduated from the Animism college, and is going out into the world to find his "Anim," a specific animal he will bond with and with which he can open up his full potential of magickal ability. He was sold to the college as a slave, and as such, has to earn money to pay them back to earn his freedom.
Alex is a delightful character, an innocent and rather naive kid who has no concepts of some of the bad things that are out there. His adventure is remarkably funny, and I was laughing aloud at many sections of this poor kid's life. Alex bonds with a rat, Mote, near the beginning of the story, and the tale runs at a decent pace thereafter.
Forward does, however, tend to "over-fantasy" her book. There are races and bits and pieces of the world that at times make you blink in confusion, and it sometimes borders on too much. Raptor-people, rat-people, lemur-people... it starts to confuse.
It's a book I can only describe as "cute," and if you like Tanya Huff's "Summon the Keeper," the tone is similar and you'd likely enjoy "The Animist."

“We’re Going to See the Beatles!” presents the story of Beatlemania in America as experienced by their most devoted fans.

“We’re Going to See the Beatles!” includes anecdotes from those who cheered the group as they arrived at Kennedy Airport in 1964, who kept vigil for them outside the Plaza Hotel, and who sat in the studio audience of The Ed Sullivan Show for the band’s landmark first live TV broadcast. Other fans detail what it was like to see the Beatles in one of their rare concerts at such famous venues as Shea Stadium and Candlestick Park.

From the earliest whispers about the band to the Beatles’ appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, and from their subsequent tours and albums to their breakup, author Garry Berman has collected stories from the fans who witnessed the hysteria firsthand. Contributors from around the United States also share photographs and mementos to help create a richly detailed and entertaining oral history.

What emerges is a highly personal account of the Beatles and their incredible impact on music and popular culture.

From Publishers Weekly
Almost 45 years after Beatlemania swept the U.S., memories of the Beatles' legendary U.S. invasion during the mid-1960s remain fresh in the minds of those who were there. In this remarkably personal oral history of the Beatles in America, author and fan Berman (Best of the Britcoms: From Fawlty Towers to Absolutely Fabulous) tracked down 42 individuals from all over the country who cheered the Beatles at New York's JFK airport when they first landed in America, sat in The Ed Sullivan Show audience for the Beatles' live television debut, waited in line for hours (repeatedly) to see A Hard Day's Night, and attended concerts during the group's three chaotic U.S. tours. Bridging their tales with breezy narration, Berman succinctly recounts the Beatles' entire history, from 1963 through the solo years and the deaths of John Lennon and George Harrison. Though some of them have lapsed in their Beatle fanaticism, all of Berman's subjects realize the significance of their experiences and relate them with gusto. As put by Dale Ford, who saw the Beatles three times in San Francisco, including their final gig, "I was thinking to myself, 'Dale, savor this moment. This is gonna go down in history.' And it did."

From Booklist
When the Beatles first came to America, some girls stole maids’ uniforms at New York’s Plaza Hotel to try to see their idols. Chatty, precocious Linda Binns Liles, then 9, made her way to the press car in the train carrying the band from New York to Washington, D.C., and ended up talking to Ringo Starr for an hour. Such are the memories of the original Beatlemaniacs gathered in this oral history. Later fan recollections can be poignant. Debbie Levitt struck up a conversation with John Lennon as he and Yoko Ono left a coffee shop on the day he was shot to death. Many still can’t explain the hysteria of their fandom: “It was something that just came over us.” A document of historical import, this is also a mostly joyful celebration of an extraordinary phenomenon. Beatles fans, old and new, will adore it. --June Sawyers

We're Going To See The Beatles
By Alan S. Damann
This book is a great trip back to the early days of Beatlemania. Glad there was so much input from the male fans too as the Beatles impression on us guys is greatly undocumented. A lot of the stories brought back memories I long forgot. I kept saying "Oh Yeah! I forgot about that!" while reading. It's a fun, clever book and I love reading the stories by the people who lived it.

An exciting page turner for all Beatles Fans!!
By JoAnne Penta
I was there. I lived through Beatlemania. Author Garry Berman captures the essence of what it was like to have experienced all the hysteria, emotion and passion of what it was like to have been a Beatles fan as it was happening. As told by the fans themselves, nothing is held back.

The book transports the reader back to a time in history when Beatlemania reigned and allows a birdseye view of what it meant to be a Beatles fan circa 1963-1970. The fervor of the fans is painted on every page in intimate detail.

For anyone who experienced Beatlemania first hand, or anyone attempting to answer the question "What was it like?" this book is THE authority on the subject.

For the rest of us...
By David Meyerson, Ph.D.
My introduction to Beatlemania was at the age of 10 finding a 45 of "Let it Be" in a stack of 45's in a box a neighbor had put out for garbage. Yup, I guess you could say that I was born a bit too late.

That's where this book comes in. "We're Going to See the Beatles!" brought me right smack dab in the middle of all those crazy kids - mostly girls - who went mad for the Beatles and in so doing ushered in a new era of culture, music, and politics.

Yeah, we all know those cliches. And that's the charm of this book, because it avoids all those looking-back analyses, and also all those glimpses from the hanger-ons, and instead tells the story of the Beatles Invasion through the eyes and hearts of their young and frenzied fans. So while I missed all that, this book made me feel a part of it, and I got caught up in it as if it were happening all over again. I think Berman did an excellent job of piecing together the many first-hand accounts to tell this story directly, without weighing it down with unnecessary commentary. Sadly, it also brings you along for the downward arc of the Fabs, but so the story went, and getting that choking lump in my throat for Lennon's murder made me realize how captivating this story truly is, especially as told by those who lived and breathed it while it was happening.

If you missed seeing the Beatles, do not miss reading this book.

A great finale for a great series.
By Stefan
Final books in series are always tricky. Will the author tie everything up with a lovely bow for readers? Will there be vague, open-ended solutions that will have fans guessing and debating what really happened? Will it be an awful mess? There are many decisions and pitfalls that can catch the unwary or incautious author. But with The Broken Isles, Newton has pretty much dodged them all. This is a great ending. The story is top notch, as we can expect. I think each book in the Legends of the Red Sun series has improved in every way, and The Broken Isles is no exception, with great writing, an exciting story, and engaging characters.

[Despite my best efforts, there are some spoilers in this review. If you haven't read the first three books in Legends of the Red Sun, I obviously think you should go read them now, as the whole series is fantastic. However, if you want to keep reading this review, you should proceed with caution.]

When the novel begins, we're quickly relocated back into the world, into the swing of events, and reacquainted with the characters. Villjamur has been destroyed, and the fleeing refugees are dogged by the invaders and their Sky City. Word reaches Villiren, itself recovering from the battles in City of Ruin, and Brynd must marshal a response to save as many people as possible. At the same time, anti-"alien" sentiment in Villiren, fanned by Malum and his gang, is making life extra-difficult for the leader of the Night Watch, as he attempts to negotiate a settlement with the inter-dimensional refugees as well.

The story is presented from a number of perspectives, all of them unique and distinctive: there's Brynd, the albino Night Watch Commander, who is in charge of Villiren's defence, and enjoying the position of de facto ruler. Jamur Eir and Rika are prominent, as is Eir's companion, the roguish Randur. Unfortunately, some of the previous events have left Rika both physically and psychologically damaged - perhaps even beyond repair or saving. Fulcrom, the Rummel former-inquisitor, is accompanying the refugees from Villjamur, alongside Lan, the heroine from Book of Transformations.

The narrative includes more of a focus on the enigmatic otherworlders who have joined our heroes than in previous books, but they do not dominate the story - Brynd, Randur, Eir, and Jeza are the key protagonists. Both the Amazon-like Artemisia and bizarre Frater Mercury are fascinating characters, but they are also rather frustrating to their ambassadors. Especially Fulcrom, who finds Frater Mercury endlessly ittitating, unfathomable, and downright difficult on many occasions.

There are also a couple of new additions to the cast. My personal favourites are Jeza and her fellow young cultists from Factory 54, who provide some unexpected help to Brynd's plans. I really enjoyed these characters, and it is through them that we learn even more about cultists and the science-magic of Newton's world. They also bring to life the Mourning Wasps, devised by China Mieville specifically for this book.

As with Newton's other novels, The Broken Isles is filled with imaginative and original creatures, concepts and more. The inhabitants of Villiren are coming to terms with the fact that they will have to share their land and city with aliens from another dimension. Many are not reacting well, and Brynd is forced to take a firm hand against those troublemakers who want to do anything to prevent the Other from unsettling the status quo. It offers up some nicely-done commentary on racism and intolerance, without bludgeoning the reader about the head. It's a deft touch, and I love the way Newton is able to seamlessly weave social commentary (including some about bankers, this time) into the narrative. The discussions about Villiren's future are also an interesting examination of nation-building under the shadow of war. It's really interesting stuff. Things are, I admit, rather neatly tied up at the end, which may not please everyone, but I appreciated that Newton decided to properly finish the story.

Newton's prose is, once again, exceptional - it is fluid, devoid of extraneous verbiage, and really pulled me on through the novel. He kept me reading well into the night. His descriptions are evocative, yet stripped-down, and each scene's atmosphere and ambience is expertly portrayed. The author's writing has improved with every novel. It will certainly be interesting to read the new edition of Nights of Villjamur (out in November), on which Newton has done a re-edit and tweak.

I think my only real complaint about the novel is the absence of the chain-smoking Hanuman from City of Ruin. As Randur points out at one point, echoing my own thoughts: "Ridiculous, if you ask me, though the flying monkey things were fun."

The plot builds to an action-packed climax, as battle erupts on multiple fronts, leaving Brynd's forces over-taxed and, potentially, over-matched. There's also perhaps the most bad-ass "boss fight" near the very end, which I thought perfectly exhibited Brynd as the brutal, elite-soldier he is.

Once again, Newton has written a novel of depth, compelling characters, excellent drama, and captivating prose. I love this series, and I'm rather sad it had to end. Easily one of my favourite fantasy series, I highly recommend this to everyone, especially people in search of fantasy that is a little unusual.

Rushed, disappointing and a major let-down after the the first three books
By A. Whitehead
Brynd Lathraea has saved the city of Villiren from the invading Okun. Jamur Rika has now made the city her new capital and declared herself Empress, but Brynd is concerned over her fragile mental state. As the invaders grow in strength and numbers, Brynd makes an important alliance, but one that may cost him the support of the people.

The Broken Isles is the fourth and concluding novel in the Legends of the Red Sun series which began way back in 2009 with Nights of Villjamur. Through that novel and its two sequels, City of Ruin and The Book of Transformations, Newton painted a convincing picture of a world slipping into an ice age, riven by internal conflict and external threats. It's definitely been one of the most interesting of recent fantasy series, fusing elements of traditional epic fantasy with the New Weird movement and with the Dying Earth subgenre.

The structure of the series to date has been to use a different main cast in each book, sometimes comprising new characters and sometimes promoting former minor, supporting characters to main character status. It's worked well in previous novels, but in The Broken Isles Newton has to combine all of these characters into one larger cast operating in multiple locations to address all of the numerous plot strands he's been developing. Unfortunately, this does not work very well. The Broken Isles is the big, epic finale to a fantasy saga but has the same page count as the novels that came before it (just under 400 pages in paperback). Suddenly having to handle a greatly enlarged cast means that each character now gets rather short shrift in terms of development and attention.

This problem extends to the plot and structure: the book opens with a chain of fleeing refugees who have to be saved from pursuit, whilst Brynd has to secure control of Villiren and deal with the increasingly bizarre Empress and secure an alliance with another faction of the alien forces and deal with cultists intent on resurrecting an ancient monster and deal with a racist crime lord determined to take control of the city and force foreigners out and save the entire Boreal Archipelago from annihilation at the hands of the Okun and their masters. The book's slim page count can't deal with the weight of all this at all.

The result is that The Broken Isles feels like a tremendously detailed outline for a much longer and, frankly, much better novel. Scenes, even momentous ones, are short and perfunctory. There are no subtle moments of revelation, with info-dumping and exposition being the order of the day to clear up mysteries that have been around from the start of the series. Newton's prose, which has been enjoyable and offbeat since the first novel, is here reduced to the most simple and prosaic. The pacing tends towards the staccato, with scenes feeling almost disconnected from events around them. Things happen but they have no weight to them.

This is a monumental shame, as Newton's ideas remain as fascinating as ever. The Mourning Wasp (developed with China Mieville) is a terrific creation. The idea of turning the invaders' own technology against them is a good one (the sort-of cultist storyline dealing with this is actually one of the better-handled ones in the book). The invading flying city is appropriately threatening. Frater Mercury's solution to the invading aliens is over-simplistic, but also appropriate to his character. But these moments are few and far between.

The Broken Isles (**) is an exercise in frustration. Mark Charan Newton is a talented writer, but this novel feels so compromised by word counts that most of the enjoyment has been leeched out of it, despite flashes of imaginative power. A tremendously disappointing conclusion to one of the more interesting fantasy series of recent times (and, alongside God of Clocks and The Born Queen, furthers something of a trend for Tor UK series to have disappointing finales). The novel is available now in the UK and USA.

James Cone's MARTIN AND MALCOLM AND AMERICA Remains Top List
By B. Bennett-Carpenter
Dr James Cone's MARTIN AND MALCOLM AND AMERICA: A DREAM OR A NIGHTMARE is one of the best books I've encountered.

Cone discusses the rhetorical strategies of Martin Luther King, Jr, and Malcolm X as they applied to their particular audiences: King to the South and Malcolm X to the North. Cone argues that Martin King's strategy of non-violent protest, while effective in the extremely segregated and anti-integrationist South, was not effective in the North (particularly in cities like Chicago and Detroit) because the discourse and policy of "integration" was already superficially accepted by Northeners. The "liberal" North found King's rhetoric to be more or less agreeable even as the structures of discrimination continued to subject black people to a brutal double-standard. Thus Malcolm X's policy of Black Nationalism (separatist rather than integrationist) that allowed for violence epitomized by the slogan "by any means necessary" was more successful in the North because it more effectively confronted personal and systematic racism. Long story short: two different rhetors with different rhetorics because of different situations, different audiences, with different immediate goals. Interestingly, near the close of both men's lives--Malcolm X killed in 1965 and Martin King in 1968--Malcolm began to sound a little more like Martin; and Martin began to speak even more forcefully, not unlike Malcolm had been known to do previously.

I had the great luxury of hearing Dr Cone present a lecture based on the book back in 1992. Twelve years later, my assesment of the book remains constant: Outstanding.

A Dream or a Nightmare?
By Alex Nichols, author of Shadow Rock
James Cone's "Martin & Malcolm & America" is a fascinating contrast of the lives, experiences, and thoughts of two icons. It is written in a style that recalls good investigative journalism as it maps out the tumultuous times in which the two lived.
The philosophies of Malcolm and Martin, often portrayed as polar opposites in the media, are grounded in certain similarities. Both based their viewpoints on their religious traditions, believed that God was on the side of the poor and oppressed, and both held a passionate belief in the dignity of black lives. Both philosophies were formed in spite of the fact that they lived in a age when the institutions that ruled America either neglected the dignity of blacks, or ignored civil rights issues altogether.
The lives of Malcolm and Martin were quite different, however. Martin was raised in a upper middle class family in Atlanta, the descendant of slaves whose father and grandfather both became prominant preachers. He life afforded him a great education -- at Morehouse, Crozer Theological Seminary, and Boston University. His family was close knit.
Malcolm, by contrast, saw his father murdered by white supremicists and his mother abused by the social service agencies, which eventually institutionalized her. Malcolm ended up in the foster care system and eventually went to prison for petty crime. There, he came to value the importance of education, and read voraciously. Introduced by his brother to the Nation of Islam, he had a powerful conversion experience in prison. After his release, he became second in command to Elijah Mohammed, the religion's leader.
Both Martin and Malcolm spent their time working to improve the quality of black lives. Martin took on institutional power through civil rights legislation, and Malcolm worked in the urban ghettos, attempting to galvanize blacks to reject Christianity and move towards strengthening their lives through non-integration. Although Martin and Malcolm differed in their visions, they were more alike than not.
"Martin & Malcolm & America" is a great read. Highly recommended.

Excellent comparison of two giants
By A Customer
Martin and Malcolm and America presents an extraordinary comparison of the two most influential figures of the Civil Rights movement. It is especially enlightening because it presents the sides of each man which the world has forgotten, that is, the militant nature of the later teachings of Dr. King and the more conciliatory nature of the later teachings of Brother Malcolm. James Cone also focuses heavily on the religious aspects of each man's teaching, arguing that neither man's philosophy can be separated from the religious doctrines he espoused.
If I had one critique of this book, it is that Cone relies too heavily on the Autobiography of Malcolm X for his Malcolm information. Almost all of his Malcolm info is quoted directly from that book, and like most autobiographies, Malcolm wrote/dictated with a bit of license. Having read the autobiography twice, it got a bit annoying at times to reread Malcolm's own words about himself. Malcolm was a far more complex (and more interesting) character than he portrayed himself to be, and that part was left out. (For more info, I'd recommend "Malcolm : The Life of the Man Who Changed Black America.")
All in all, though, this is a book that should be on your bookshelf. Highly recommended.

"When they say everything's bigger in Texas, they mean nice things: hair, smiles, steaks, sky. Crime is too depressing to make the cut, but like it or not, our crime is not just big but bigger than anyone else's, so we may as well brag about it... Since its inception, Texas Monthly has made hay of true crime, in the great tradition of our literary forebears... [The] twelve gems [in this book] have in common what you'd want from any good read: memorable characters, a compelling plot, and rich scenes. And, of course, great writing. The authors are some of the finest not just in Texas but anywhere." Evan Smith, from the foreword

Interesting!
By MoodyBlue
I read this book, filled with short (true) stories after watching an episode of "American Justice", about a cheerleader who gets murdered by three teenaged friends. Why no one ever wrote a book about that story is odd because it is very interesting. The book offers a number of stories, one being the hit and run murder of the cheating dentist by his wife. If you like true crime, I recommend this book.

Some of The Best Crime Reporting Ever!
By SETH WALTON
My favorite story in this book is Skip Hollandsworth's SUBURBAN MADNESS. Clara Harris, if she had not lost her mind, could have won big time in a divorce suit against David. She could have won that big house, gotten sole custody of their kids, opened up that huge dental clinic in the Galleria area that they had been planning to do for years. She could have made Jerry Reed's "SHE GOT THE GOLDMINE AND I GOT THE SHAFT" song come to life for real!

Very useful but needs to be supplemented with others
By Jacob
If one is used to reading Evangelical systematic theologies, then one will find McGrath's approach to be strange. McGrath does not follow the format of normal systematicians. While he does address the various loci of systematic theology, that is not the point of the book. McGrath's underlying point is in showing the various loci, how were they developed in the history of the Church? He maintains (indirectly, to the degree that he follows George Lindbeck's analysis) that some doctrines can only be formed in terms of the prevailing philosophy.

With that understanding, McGrath's first 160 pages take the reader on a tour of historical theology. He introduces her to the various approaches to theology and common philosophical movements that have determined theology. On page 159 he actually begins where most Evangelical theologians begin: prolegomena. He discusses how tradition and revelation have been employed in theology. As to the conclusion, let the reader decide. The other loci of the theology (God, Trinity, Christ, Salvation, Church, Ecclesiology) are discussed in a neutral manner. He doesn't come to conclusions, but is only making the reader think through her convictions: If I believe x about philosophy and epistemology, how can I still maintain y in soteriology?

For example, on pp. 38-39 he discusses how the pre- and early Reformers were philosophical nominalists. Accordingly, he *hints* that our understanding of justification by faith alone (which McGrath maintains) could only have arisen in a nominalist context. Is he right? Probably, but he doesn't develop the point.

Pros of the book:
1. Despite the philosophical jargon, it was a very easy read.
2. McGrath recognizes who (or what) will be the key players in the coming decades: postliberal theology and narrative theology. Put simply, post-liberal theology denies that there is some universal unmediated human experience from which one may draw. Post-liberal theology says that the heart of religion lies in the language and rites of a community (119-120).

Narrative theology offers us a powerful philosophical construct--and a surprisingly biblical and missional one as well. It highlights stories in relation to Christian theology. The advantages are: narrative is the main genre and focus of Scripture; it avoids the dulling result of "abstractionism;" narrative affirms that God meets us in history and speaks to us in history; it neatly expresses the tension between the limited knowledge of characters in the biblical story and the omniscient knowledge of God (167-170).

3. By using the insights of narrative and post-liberalism, McGrath utterly destroys Enlightenment theology and liberalism. If George Lindbeck is correct--and he is--then there is no universal culture or experience in which to appeal. If so, the last 2 centuries of critical theology are trash.

Cons of the book:
1. He repeats himself with a vengeance. I lost count of how many times he said, "but if George Lindbeck is correct...."

2. His book represents a problem that all Western theologies face and yet none can answer: why is it necessary that the reader wade through 250 pages of prolegomena before we get to theology? Eastern Orthodox theologies do not have this problem. While some would argue that McGrath is laying groundwork, I argue that it is unnecessary. If he accepts Lindbeck's analysis, then we shouldn't worry about what liberals and Enlightenment folk have said about theology. They are intellectual whores and are outside our community.

3. He said in this edition that he would deal more Russian Orthodox scholars. Wonderful. He didn't deal with them, though. He wasted too much time pondering Bultmann and Tillich. He could have better served the church by discussing gems like Lossky, Soloviev, and Bulgakov. They actually believe in the supernatural stuff. They have a point of contact with the West. German Liberals and French Philosophes do not.

Does this hybrid succeed?
By Doug Erlandson
Books on Christian Theology typically fall into one of three categories: Systematic, Historical, or Biblical. Alister McGrath's "Christian Theology: An Introduction" appears to be a hybrid of the first two of these. It possesses many of the features one would expect of a systematic theology, in that it covers prolegomena (in Part II, "Sources and Methods," particularly Chs. 6-7) as well as the doctrines of God, the Trinity, Christ, Salvation, Human Nature, the Church, the Sacraments, and Last things (all in Part III). Part I, on the other hand, gives a fairly brief overview of the different periods of Christian theology, beginning with the Patristic Period and ending with the Modern Period (which McGrath considers to be from 1750 to the present). The history of doctrine is not confined to Part I, however. Rather, the third part, which is ostensibly devoted to systematics, also contains considerable discussion of the historical development of certain doctrines.

Melding the historical development of doctrine with its systematic exposition is not bad. In fact, it is necessary if one is not to think that Christian doctrines somehow arrived full-blown, as if by magic. Problems arise only when this attempt results in a superficial discussion of the doctrines themselves. In reading through "Christian Theology" I found myself amazed at how little space was devoted to a variety of important and in many cases controversial doctrines. For example, the sections on the sacraments and "last things" are far too brief to do any justice to the variety of views considered.

McGrath's book also contains discussions not typically found in either historical or systematic theologies. For example, Chapter 9 is on the relationship between philosophy and theology (its subtitle is "Introducing a Dialogue"), Chapter 11, entitled "Faith and History: The Christological Agenda of Modernity," contains a discussion of the quest for the historical Jesus, and Chapter 17 discusses the relationship between Christianity and world religions. These chapters certainly add to the variety of matters McGrath discusses. Whether they help keep the book focused is another issue.

Just what you need to get yourself started
By Guerrero
This was a great recommendation from my Seminary Professor. I didn't know too much about Church history so I was underlining every other paragraph! This book gives you the essential building blocks to start you off on this subject. The author does a great job writing in such a way that this is the Christian view so that outsiders of the faith would find it an intellectual read.

So Many Major errors
By A Customer
I must confess that after several attempts to read this book, I finally gave up. I could not get past the MAJOR storyline errors. For example in the first chapter, they describe Tika as having short dark hair. Hair color may have been a minor point on everyone else EXCEPT Tika (What color is Flint's hair? or Tanis'?). It is stated again and again how she had RED hair. It is part of her personality and it is not a small throw away detail. Then Tanis and Flint have a conversation where they discuss how worried they are about Caramon and Raistlin and how Raistlin is too young to be going off to take The Test!! Nobody knew they were off to take The Test, and it was clearly stated that it was a secret, but even more, the friends were suprised at Raistlin when they first saw him in Autumn Twilight. Did no one involved in writing this book actually read Chronicles? If not the author, and there is no excuse for her not having read the source, but at least an editor, proofreader...someone. I tried to read past these points, but was blasted with small things like typos, or sentences being spoken by Tas referred to as "said the dwarf." I give up....maybe if I finally finish everything DL ever written, I might come back and try this one again.

inconsistency galore
By Larris M.
This was the first Dragonlance novel I read not authored by series initiators Weis&Hickman. At the time I was in the middle of adolescense, and should as such be smack in the middle of the target audience for this title.
But even if Kendermore featured Tasslehoff Burrfoot, up until then one of my favorite characters from the other books in the Dragonlance line, I balked at the plot of this prequel to Chronicles laying it upon his shoulders to save the world of Krynn from a menace which should be entirely new to him at the beginning of Chronicles, the first published and founding trilogy in the Dragonlance Saga.
Sadly, the book was just as ripe with other inconsistencies. Tika's wrong hair color has been mentioned, but in my eyes the Half-Orc assassin was probably the worst offense. There. Are. No. Orcs. On. Krynn. Double period.
The first Preludes trilogy (it was only later, after the addition of a second Preludes trilogy, aptly named Preludes II, that it was relabeled a "series") marked a time when old TSR, Inc. unfathomably kept a very firm grip on its intellectual properties (to the point of denying Weis&Hickman the use of the Dragonlance trademark without TSR's consent) and at the same time the company did next to nothing in order to keep up the consistency and quality of new products under said properties' brand names. Kendermore is a prime, if not-so-shining example of this period in real-world Dragonlance history.
(bit of a rant there, sorry)
Oddly, author Mary Kirchoff, who was book editor at TSR at the time, did a splendid job of capturing the Dragonlance feel in her short story "Finding the Faith", found in the Dragonlance short story anthology "Kender, Gully Dwarves, and Gnomes". I can only assume that she did so because she had concrete information to build upon, since the main events of that short story were already told at least twice elsewhere.
Expecting a demanding read from books of a series such as Dragonlance would perhaps be more than a little ridiculous, but even so there are few titles of the series which display the expected immaturity and disrespect to the reader's intelligence more blatantly than this one.
Oh, Kendermore does have its moments. But now, almost a decade and a half later, few of them are memorable. The original characters of the book are its consoling elements, Gisella the dwarf inhabiting the dominant position among these. She was and is unforgettable, and Kirchoff does deserve credit for her.
If you want to read more about kender, I would instead of Kendermore strongly recommend the opening novel of the Bridges of Time series, "Spirit of the Wind" by Chris Pierson.

Tas deserves better
By Vilbs
"Kendermore" has the dubious distinction of being the best novel in the Dragonlance Preludes trilogy.... I say dubious because that's more of a slam to the other two novels than a complement to this one. It's still not all that great a book, but is marginally saved by the overall quality of the character Tasslehoff Burrfoot. As has already been pointed out, the author clearly contradicts facts and character qualities already established in Chronicles, but nitpicking aside the plot just isn't all that hot.
It starts off decently enough, with Tas being nabbed by a bounty hunter and dragged back home to Kendermore, but it degenerates from there into a gnome ridden goofy mess. It's an immature and almost insultingly childish story that doesn't really give new insight or development to everybody's favorite kender. Tasslehoff is one of the most recognizable and consistently entertaining characters in the Dragonlance world, and to have this be "his" tale prior to the War of the Lance is doing him a great disservice.
