Light sleuthing

Orphaned Lizzie is taken in as a companion to her godfather's widow, and is intrigued with the mystery of what really happened to the prior companion, Miss Hexham, who ostensibly eloped without taking any of her belongings or providing information about her husband or new home. The concept of the story might be charming to the reader looking for a light mystery, but be warned that Lizzie is not much of sleuth. The unraveling of the puzzle depends on coincidence after coincidence, as Lizzie repeatedly happens to find the clue she needs by overhearing a bit of information or chancing to meet the right person. New to London, Lizzie is acquainted with only about a dozen people, yet they are all connected to the secret of Miss Hexham's disappearance. At one point, Lizzie is hopelessly lost in unfamiliar streets and nearly blinded by a pea soup fog, yet she encounters several of these acquaintances. I had trouble warming to Lizzie as a heroine. She lacks respect for her employer, who despite her faults is charitable toward Lizzie and requires little work. In return, Lizzie openly criticizes the lady and her friends and shares household secrets with outsiders. To me, this does not seem like the behavior of a young woman of Lizzie's era but an opportunity for social commentary on the ills of Victorian society from a modern perspective, but some readers might not find it objectionable. Part light romance, part light mystery, The Companion might be the right book for a person who does not want an intense reading experience.

Such a good Read! Sherlock Homes meets a Victorian Nacy Drew

I love the voice of this book! Set in London in the 1864, this book not only depicts the area of the time in a no nonsense way, but also keeps in consideration the way of communication and the allowances given to a woman of Lizzie Martins status (both in being single and of the more aristocratic status of living.) A good read that kept my interest the whole time, definitely one I would read again. This coming from an avid Sherlock Holmes fan, should mean something! Looking forward to the rest of the series.
